Rate this book
A country miss from a modest estate may destroy Fitzwilliam Darcy’s closest friendship!

Darcy and his good friend Simon Lockhart are guests of Charles Bingley at Netherfield Park in Hertfordshire. When the otherwise sensible Lockhart becomes infatuated with Miss Elizabeth Bennet, who has neither wealth nor a renowned family name, Darcy attempts to make his friend see reason. But there is a complication—Darcy’s growing attraction for Miss Elizabeth.

Elizabeth has an instant liking for the amiable Mr. Lockhart, whilst she deems the arrogant Mr. Darcy to be an undesirable entity. In time, though, she is coaxed into judging Mr. Darcy anew. But when an unexpected predicament forces her to make an undesirable choice, it seems all hope of a happy outcome is lost.

In this Pride & Prejudice variation, Darcy faces a Will he heed the yearnings of his heart—even at the expense of his principles?

Hold on to your hats, the twists will give you whiplash!

Told from both Darcy and Elizabeth's perspective, the writing was a little lighter than previous books by this author, but it works for this story.

Darcy and Elizabeth reach a friendship after a slight hiccup, but they are both interested in more. Neither has this understanding of the other, so plenty of misunderstandings take place. (Some of which is Darcy's pride).

Lockhart -a new character included in the Netherfield party, adds to the bevy of wealthy eligible single men to wreak havoc on the Bennet girls.

There is something so likeable about this Darcy. He is vulnerable, and is into Elizabeth from his first meeting. His thoughts are at times so funny, especially in connection to Caroline!

I am not a fan of the Lydia and Wickham thread, and unfortunately those scenes are included, but it was necessary to make later decisions happen and make sense.

The sisterhood between a few of the sisters was sweet.

With no epilogue, we don't learn how some of the characters end up.

A fast paced read, with something new happening at every corner turn. Highly enjoyable and entertaining!

A compelling, beautifully written, page turner.

The addition of Mr Darcy’s good friend, Mr Simon Lockhart, brings an intriguing twist when the amiable Mr Lockhart has an accident. Elizabeth’s aid puts her reputation at risk and earn her an admirer.

Meanwhile, Mrs Bennet is driven to distraction with three new eligible gentlemen in the neighbourhood, and her manoeuvrings were hilariously off. Jane is called home from London, and a thrilling and funny game of; who loves me -- who loves me not, ensues.

Mrs Annesley's family emergency brings Miss Darcy into the fray, and I love her story arc in addition to Miss Mary's, who also has a prominent role in this delightful tale. One of the highlights is Mary's growth under Elizabeth’s gentle tutelage.

The story ends in satisfying happily ever afters for several couples.

I heartily recommend this book!

200 pages on my kindle.

Affections seem to have a way of switching in this tale. Or at least the people involved seen to change their minds as to who it is they are now enamored of.

We have the addition of a Mr. Lockhart to the mix of bachelors who arrive in Meryton. That man is drawn to Elizabeth and she finds herself attending to him when he is injured.

Of course, Elizabeth and Darcy have their many misunderstandings.

I enjoyed this story.

I have read this book by borrowing it through my Kindle Unlimited subscription and reading it using the Kindle app on my tablet

If you have already read any other works by this talented author, you know exactly what to expect when reading this book, and once again, you are not going to be disappointed. If this is the first Miller's book you've read, you'll encounter an outstanding variation of the masterpiece "Pride and Prejudice," with the same characters from the original book—the Bennet sisters, Darcy, Mr. Lockhart, and others—but with a different and very interesting approach to the story. This time, Mr. Lockhart falls for a poor Miss Elizabeth Bennet, and his friend Darcy will try to convince him against it since it goes against their predicaments of looking for a wealthy woman. To be honest, he also falls for her.

Do not miss this book if you loved the original story and want to revisit these original characters in a different plot while resembling the writing style of the original works.

When Netherfield Park is let at last, all Meryton is excited by the prospect of wealthy batchelors.

Charles Bingley, Simon Lockhart and Fitzwilliam Darcy are soon making themselves known to the neighbourhood.

Bingley and Lockhart are handsome and amiable, whilst Darcy projects haughtiness.

Simon meets Elizabeth Bennet when he gets a concussion, falling off his horse. She rescues him and earns his undying regard.
Unfortunately, the return of the beautiful Jane Bennet, turns his head and Bingley’s.

Elizabeth is quite happy to settle for friendship. However, Darcy is horrified at such inconstancy (whilst becoming increasingly smitten).

It takes quite a while for the twisting tendrils of attraction and love to be untangled.

Delightful additions include the presence of Georgiana Darcy at Netherfield, Mary Bennet’s growing confidence in her own appearance and the delightful Robbie, the Cocker spaniel.

Netherfield is let at last! By Mr. Bingley, but in addition to Mr. Darcy,he also brings Simon Lockhart, another eligible bachelor. 3 Bachelor‘s only 3 miles from Longbourn.
Okay to be honest, I didn‘t know what to think of Lockhart. Haven‘t really liked him. In real life I would avoid a guy like him. Don‘t get me wrong, he‘s a jovial guy, and friendly, and talkative but there were some things which irked me.

It‘s a typical love triangle story at first, Lockhart and Darcy both falling for Elizabeth. Though Darcy tried for Lockhart to see reason about this ‚union‘. Between Darcy and Elizabeth it‘s kind of a Love at first sight but with the usual misunderstandings and lack of communication.
Later in the story Georgiana comes to Netherfield and of course developes a friendship with Elizabeth. Seeing how that progressed was so good! I liked her.
We also have Wickham eloping with Lydia, but to be honest.. why including all scenes? I know it‘s for the plot and all,but a little boring. I don‘t really care if Lydia wants a dog, or which dog she wants or if Wickham will get her one.
If that isn‘t enough angst for you, a past decision hunts Elizabeth and may cost her her happiness.

Okay so.. I was frustated when ODC ever will end up. It just took so long. And some things were a bit messy. ODC attracted from the start, and are good friends. That‘s all fine and good. I like that. Then comes Wickham and Elizabeth suddenly changes her good opinion of Darcy bc a stranger talked to her. She knew Wickham 10 minutes before he defamed Darcy but she knew Darcy already 6 weeks and they are friends.
But Oh my! Darcy was a Gem in this! And looked forward to each Darcy POV.
The Story is written is Elizabeth and Darcy‘s POV if you‘re wondering.

- Clean Content (a kiss)
- a little angst
- Quick Read/ Novella length
- No Epilogue
- Star of the book: ROBBIE! (The dog!)

A light, sparkling Pride & Prejudice variation exploring the fun of multiple suitors, misunderstandings, and true love finding a way. Kelly Miller has provided stories over the years that run the gamut from light to deeply emotional occasionally dipping into paranormal or suspense to add a further layer. In the instance of The Trouble With Friends, the tone harks back to the classic Regency Romp and I was down for that.

Elizabeth Bennet and Fitzwilliam Darcy meet with less pride and less prejudice involved but Darcy’s sense of duty to family and class differences along with someone’s lies aren’t the only barriers for this couple. Darcy and Bingley both have competition for their love interests from a worthy man of class and wealth. Just as Elizabeth has more in common with her sister Lydia than she would like when rumors that affect her reputation cause her to be induced, not by love, but circumstances into matrimony.

I had a good time with these characters as they seemed to swap in and out of courtship pairings. It was humorous, but there was also an interesting path to love for all concerned. What was unique and I enjoyed a great deal was seeing Elizabeth make a stronger connection with her younger sister Mary and also Darcy’s sister, Georgiana. Mary is socially awkward and has heard from her own relations that she’s not pretty, but Elizabeth works to help Mary understand she’s not plain and she just needs to step out of her shell more. Georgie is shy, but she also calls Elizabeth on one of her fears and helps her as much as she helps Georgie. Elizabeth still misunderstands Mr. Darcy at times, but she also sees him better through his friends and his younger sisters’ eyes.

I enjoyed this light and quick read that had some fun romantic comedy entanglements and heartwarming characters all rolled into one.

I rec’d an eARC from the author to read in exchange for an honest review.

New character new challenge for Darcy.

This could be described as a comedy of errors, which in another author’s hand might have been more error and darker comedy. But this was certainly sweet, and no darkness. A who’s in love with who and who’s marrying who romp. I love Kelly Miller’s writing. I recommend any of her stories. This one is a new kind of story from her. The new character Simon Lockhart is almost more Bingley than Bingley at times except that he has more backbone and decisiveness. And he’s good friends with Darcy but doesn’t rely on him for direction in his life.

I listened to the audio book and the narrator did a lovely job. I’ll be listening to it again in the future.

A story to lighten your heart!

I loved this book! I have read three books by Kelly Miller and this one is definitely my favourite!

The Trouble With Friends pulled me in immediately. I love the attention Miller gives to Mary, exploring both her character more in depth, as well as her relationship with her elder sister, Elizabeth. This is an area Jane Austen leaves room for interpretation and Miller crafts a likeable character with insecurities and desires.

Before the end of chapter one, I was already laughing out loud at some of the witty banter Miller inserts into the tale. The character of Lockhart adds a dramatic flair to the story, as well as a contrast to Darcy in all his brooding glory. I enjoyed the dialogue between the male characters, which gave me a deeper glimpse into Darcy's motivations, anxieties, and emotions that I never came close to knowing in the original Pride and Prejudice. For this reason, The Trouble With Friends is a delightful variation that takes the traditional and blends it with some imaginative license that feels as if it could easily be part of the story we all know and love. Miller is that good at her craft that I forgot where Austen ends and Miller begins!

One of my favourite aspects of this story is the internal struggles, often repressed, that lead to numerous misunderstandings between characters. Nothing comes without effort and this makes the resolution all the sweeter in my opinion.

If you love Austen, Pride and Prejudice, witty banter, and true romance, I suggest you download your copy of The Trouble With Friends this instant! Darcy's happiness depends upon it...and I felt truly lighthearted after reading it. Win-win.

Nothing out of the ordinary, which is good when you’re craving the ordinary.

It’s a capably written, albeit predictable tale. I will remember the cocker spaniel. If you’re looking for a low-angst read, this will do the trick.

Who loves whom?
Told from both a Darcy and Elizabeth POV, Bingley’s usual Netherfield party includes a new character, and close friend to Mr. Darcy, Mr. Simon Lockhart. He is also wealthy and single. Jane is in London with the Gardiners when everyone’s first acquaintance is made. When Elizabeth helps Lockhart after falling from his horse, he takes an interest in her—until Jane returns and his attentions turn towards her, as do Bingley’s. Good thing Elizabeth isn’t really interested. She has an early attraction to Mr. Darcy, and he returns it, but does not yet declare it to her. They are friendly towards each other early on.

There are many twists in this story, mainly related to who loves whom, causing misunderstandings. It seems some can’t make up their minds. I struggled with Jane’s portrayal, but I can understand it in order to advance the plot. There are compromises too. The usual Wickham and Lydia elopement takes place which threatens the Bennets’ ruin, and word of Elizabeth’s helping Simon makes its way to London and threatens her reputation as well.

Robbie, Elizabeth’s Cocker Spaniel is sweet, and I kept expecting him to do something special or heroic as part of the plot, but it doesn’t happen, so I was left a tad unsatisfied there. The dialogue, which Kelly Miller always writes well, flows nicely throughout this story. There is a bit of side story for Mary and Elizabeth which I enjoyed also.

January 15, 2024 - Audiobook
Deborah Balm is a very good narrator and I like her very much, but as a matter of personal taste, I didn’t enjoy this particular voice interpretation of Jane, which I felt was too sombre and deep in tone for her. I read the book as I listened along with the audiobook.

I do recommend the book and audiobook, both of which I have purchased for my Kindle and Audible libraries.

Kisses only.

"The Trouble With Friends" by Kelly Miller

💙What a beautiful, elegant, bookish journey it was. If you like Jane Austen's Pride and Prejudice, you'll enjoy Kelly Miller's magnificent variation.

💙The Plot: We follow Mr. Darcy and his friend Simon Lockhart, who are guests of Charles Bingley in Hertfordshire. We also follow the Bennet sisters, Elizabeth, in particular. In the background of beautifully depicted expectations of women during the eighteenth century, we keep following Darcy and Elizabeth's stormy friendship that can flow into something more significant. The story that is told from the perspective of Mr. Darcy and Elizabeth preserves a cute and romantic intrigue from the first pages till the end. In this captivating variation, Mr. Darcy faces a dilemma. What kind of dilemma? You'll find out by reading this brilliant novel by Kelly Miller.

💙The Writing Style: I truly enjoyed reading "The Trouble With Friends!" I liked how the author managed to preserve this elegant, pure, and coquettish style of dialogue, description of sceneries, and portraying the inner world of the characters. It was well-paced, with cute tense and twists and adorable light sarcastic humor. The wordplay involving books is absolutely delightful and made me smile. It was a light, enjoyable, and cute read.

💙The Characters: Well, the characters glued my attention from the very beginning. I was curious how they would be portrayed in this variation, and the author made it awesome. All of them are well thought out, solid, deep, and memorable. And, surely, I fell in love with an animal companion in this book. If you're a dog lover, you'll also enjoy reading these scenes.

🌚Fave quote: "No family is perfect."

🥰Would I read other books by this author: Sure!

🌝My humble rating is: 5/5

🥰I hope you'll enjoy reading this glorious, brilliant, and cute novel by Kelly Miller as much as I did!

📚Stay safe, take care, and happy reading!

Great for fans of Pride & Prejudice

I’m a big fan of Pride and Prejudice, so I wasn’t sure what to expect and whether I would enjoy a variation on the story, but this was a great read. The familiar characters – the Bennets, Mr Darcy, Bingley, and Wickham – feature, but there are twists. Mary, for example, is much more developed, Darcy is less aloof, a new suitor, Lockhart, is introduced, and my favourite addition … Robbie, the Cocker Spaniel! Lots of the locations from the original are included, such as Netherfield Park and Longbourn.

I liked the alternating viewpoint between Darcy and Elizabeth. The slight tweaks with some of the personalities, makes it feel familiar, yet original. There are lots of twists and turns. I thought it captured the time period well too.

Overall, it is a delightful love story, that I’m sure other fans of the original will enjoy. I look forward to reading other books by this author.

I say it every time, but The Trouble with Friends is without question my new favourite of Miller's P & P variations. They get better and better! Again, Miller weaves this classic into her own, and I read it in one sitting. The Trouble with Friends is a joy to read, as are all of Miller's adaptations, where the characters are delightfully portrayed and the distinctive literary style is perfect. It's easy to see the amount of research Miller has done to get everything just right. This novel, however, had me laughing out loud, anxious, and desperately flicking the pages to find out what happens next. An enthralling and page-turning 5-star read.

“The Trouble with Friends” is a charming “Pride and Prejudice” variation by Kelly Miller. Like all author’s works, this story is a delightful combination of what Jane Austen and Regency romance fans love and a few twists and turns that make the read more exciting and fit for the modern readers’ taste.

Miss Elizabeth Bennet finds herself in an awkward situation with Mr Lockhart, a man who appears in the neighbourhood, together with other noble gentlemen – all eligible bachelors. It wouldn’t be the Lizzy we all know and admire if she had behaved like a faint-hearted miss under such circumstances. Of course, she chooses the right and not the appropriate thing to do. Little does she know then how her choice will complicate her life when the complications are the last things she needs.

Although minor, Mary Bennet and Robbie – Lizzy’s cocker spaniel – are my favourite characters in this novel. I have a confession to make. I have always felt sorry for the plain and bookish Bennet sister, for I could relate to her. In my teens, I was the one with the book rather than attending dance parties with my classmates. I even had a major argument with my best friend over my obsession with reading. All I wanted after returning from school was to dive back into the world of the book I was reading at the moment. But my friend wanted us to go for a walk and chat about boys. Anyway, it always bothered me that Mary hadn’t gotten to a suitor in the original “Pride and Prejudice”. And it felt highly gratifying to see how life turned out for her in “The Trouble with Friends”.

Another favourite of mine is Mrs Bennet. She might be seen as ill-mannered and too loud for the standards of that era’s high society, but she is sincere and not hiding behind the façade of a refined lady. It doesn’t make her daughters’ lives easier, though. In addition to their lack of wealth, boisterous Mrs Bennet is a serious obstacle on their way to getting a husband.

“The Trouble with Friends” was an utter joy to read. We get to see Mr Wickham demonstrating his wickedness – which Jane Austen couldn’t afford to portray, with rules of propriety being too strict also for literary works – and we get to see Lydia’s naivete bordering on stupidity. The author also has prepared a few unexpected plot twists swerving from what the readers expect in a “Pride and Prejudice” variation.

I am looking forward to reading more books by Kelly Miller. I would be ecstatic to read variations of other Austen novels, for the author’s writing style is exquisite and her attention to the period details makes her books stand out from the works in this popular literary niche.

Great variation on a classic!

This complicated but heartwarming love story sees the initial meeting of Mr Fitzwilliam D'Arcy by Elizabeth Bennett on a trip to Meryton, with her sister Mary. Introduced by Sir William, the initial meeting was not favourable, as she found him quite and unsociable but little did she know it was her sheer beauty that stunned him to silence.
His friend Lockhart was sweet on Miss Bennett and D'Arcy the was on a mission to dissuade him from perusing her. The pairing would bring financial stability but the spark just wasn't there for Lizzy and her attention soon landed elsewhere. Their feelings from a distance were mutual.

This is the 2nd variation book of Kelly Miller's I've read and thoroughly enjoyed. The old characters appear as in the Jane Austin version but some play more of a role with developing traits. Family names, reputation and standing within the adjorning estates and areas are paramount in these times and the story reflects this on many occasions.
The correct language is used for the book, and some of the thinking behind reasons for marriage would certainly shock the youth of today (the consequences of being alone with a man, although entirely innocent). Although the tangled webs of love eventually unfolded, the story has you hooked, swinging one way then the other but with the happy ending everyone wants. Highly recommended if this sort of story is your thing.

Sweet romance with plenty of misunderstandings thrown in
Fitzwilliam Darcy and his friend Lockhart both meet Elizabeth Bennet at the same time and Lockhart falls for Elizabeth, not realizing that the usually quiet Fitzwilliam has deep feelings for Elizabeth too.
Further Lockhart has an accident and Elizabeth helps the man, making Lockhart fall for her even more.
Elizabeth for her part finds Fitzwilliam too arrogant and not to her liking. She is unwilling to look at the man behind the mask that he presents to the world.
There are many misunderstandings between both Elizabeth and Darcy and the banter between the main couple was sweet to read about.
The sisters' relationship with each other was cute and well brought out.
Sweet story of yearning love and how things come together (or would they?), as Fitzwilliam decides to tell Elizabeth how he feels on what he thinks is her wedding day.
Lovely charming Victorian romance with all the feels of the Jane Austen novel. Enjoyable read.

This was another fun and heartwarming variation on Pride and Prejudice by Kelly Miller. Of all the stories I’ve read so far, this one stuck most closely to the original plot, but offered novel alternative plotlines which kept the reader interested and guessing what would happen next. Elizabeth Bennet has more than one suitor, one of whom transfers his affections to Jane Bennet, who then has to chose between him and Mr Bingley. It was nice to see the often-overlooked siter, Mary Bennet, being characterised in a new way in this story and being given a suitor of her own to impress. The up and downs of Elizabeth and Darcy’s courtship – beset by mishaps and misunderstandings – are playful and entertaining in this variation. This story sticks just close enough to the original to allow Austen fans to relive some of their favourite highlights (Wickham is his knavish self and Lydia is just as wayward) but introduces some interesting twists that readers won’t see coming.

Love is complicated

Another fantastic P &P variation. Love is not easy and often very hard to hide. In this one every main character - Jane, Lizzy, Darcy and Lockhart goes through a lot and things don’t end as you think they would.

With a few new characters, and an unpredictable plot the author makes this a highly entertaining read. I got to know a little bit more about Mary and this authors view Georgina is my fav. Not to mention the lovely Robbie… he is the cutest!

This is the perfect romantic light read.

A pure enjoyment from beginning to end.

Trouble With Friends is a breathtaking walk through the Regency Era of England.  From the very beginning, I was able to visualize myself into a setting of what the 1800's were like. Author Kelly Miller's detail of proper English, lifestyle and etiquette are perfectly detailed throughout this book.
A love story, detailing more twists and turns as the Bennet sisters rifle through their own feelings of what they want and what is expected of them.  I loved the dynamics of their sisterhood, a bond not all siblings carry.
The detail of ethics is described so elegantly, it's as if this was written by an author who had lived such a life.  From the curtsy bow, eligible bachelors and presentable ladies in proper attire.  This is a remarkable storytelling that engulfs the reader into a story of truth, love and happiness.  Along with the loyalty of a cocker spaniel named Robbie.  A well above 5 stars creation and a highly recommended must read.

When Simon Lockhart accompanied his friends Charles Bingley and Fitzwilliam Darcy to the Netherfield estate, he never guessed how Elizabeth Bennett would impact his future. Yet a few days later, she comes to his aid after a riding accident. The way Elizabeth cares for him—at the risk of her reputation—impresses him. Despite her lack of romantic inclinations, he fixates on her and insists on wooing her. Then he meets her sister Jane, and all thoughts of marrying Elizabeth take flight.

Pet ownership agrees with Elizabeth Bennett. After caring for her Cocker Spaniel Robbie, she takes a greater interest in her sister Mary and tempers her mother's outrageous schemes. Seeing Mr. Lockhart in distress, Elizabeth places his needs first and her safety second. Despite his wealth and pleasant manner, his features don’t call to her. While she finds Charles Bingley attractive, his disinterest in literature limits the scope of any possible relationship. Yet both potential suitors seem superior choices to their sullen friend Fitzwilliam Darcy. Why does she feel so drawn to Darcy?

Elizabeth’s looks and manners take Darcy’s breath away. He cannot stop thinking about her. Yet fate continually draws them together. After Lockhart declares his interest in Jane, Darcy misinterprets Elizabeth's actions as despair. While seeking to protect and befriend her, his sister arrives at Netherfield. Georgiana was bored at Pemberley and still pines for George Wickham. Darcy realizes she needs a friend and knows he can trust Elizabeth to look after his sister’s interests.

So begins The Trouble With Friends: A Pride And Prejudice Variation. Author Kelly Miller compresses Jane Austen’s original timeline and limits the settings to Hertfordshire and London. She sidelines some of Austen’s characters while adding new ones, allowing readers to glimpse her beloved protagonists in a new light. While channeling Austen’s voice, she concentrates less on outdated matters, such as entailed properties and arranged marriages, while giving readers what they most desire: more time spent in the delightful company of Elizabeth Bennett and Fitzwilliam Darcy.

In this altered timeline, some events remain fixed, and others change considerably. I missed some of Austen's longer set pieces, such as Elizabeth's visit with Charlotte and her tour of Derbyshire with her aunt and uncle. Yet amid this classic tale of love and family, Simon Lockhart's friendship, loyalty, and sacrifice make him an outstanding addition to Jane Austen's cast. The Trouble With Friends: A Pride And Prejudice Variation honors Austen’s classic tale and will keep readers involved until the end.

Deborah Balm's cultured voice adds authenticity to Kelly Miller's audiobook. Balm distinguishes characters well, and her narration immerses you in Elizabeth, Darcy, and Lockhart's world. As my first experience listening to a book on Audible, I found it hugely enjoyable. The next time I attend an assembly in Meryton or a ball at Netherfield, I shall recommend this novel to all my friends, no matter how amiable or troublesome they may be!

"Life is finite and fragile, and no part of our existence is more precious than love. If we are fortunate enough to experience that gift, we cannot forsake it." ('The Trouble with Friends', p. 188)

In this variation of Jane Austen's 'Pride and Prejudice', author Kelly Miller takes us back to early nineteenth century England, when middle class marriage was a matter of honour and duty, with love a distant possibility. Marriage was a means of gaining or sustaining -- or even losing -- social advantage, and a bad decision by one family member could spell ruin for the entire family. We might cheer for young Lydia, who follows her heart and marries for love, but we would do well to remember that without careful behind-the-scenes work, her family would have faced ruin. Those were not easy times. The author takes the social realities into account, but weaves around them a story of love finding its way. That makes the story especially enjoyable.

I really enjoyed Kelly Miller's exploration of the plot and characters of 'Pride and Prejudice' in "A Dutiful Son', with some characters taking, in the end, such positive turns. In 'The Trouble with Friends', some will disappoint us, while others will shine in new ways. The introduction of Lockhart brings a new dimension to the telling. I found both treatments marvelous! The abiding affection, loyalty, and understanding between Elizabeth and Jane, the emergence of Mary, and the impetuosity of Lydia -- these are captivating and well-developed. The tension between Lockhart and Darcy, the elitism that surfaces in Bingley, the infinite patience of the father (with engagements rising and falling and re-forming all around him) -- all add to the story.

It seems that our central characters are willing to sacrifice their own happiness for duty and honour, but most of all, they do it for love; more than anything else, they want to see their loved ones happy and secure. It takes more than a nudge for them to recognize that none of them will be happy unless all of them follow the path love presents.

Of course, Robbie is a special character, and his prominence sheds light on the character of all he encounters. Through him, I came to a definitive stance on Wickham. And his treatment by Darcy convinced me that Darcy was a indeed sensitive and compassionate man, who simply must find happiness.

A familiar story comes together in a new way. Is it a better way than the original or the variation I already read? When a story is well told, it captivates us by its telling. Once again, Kelly Miller has captured my attention and delivered a well-told story; I was enchanted by the development, the outcome, and the surprises, in this excellent variation.

Fellow Pride & Prejudice variation readers, here is the next one from Kelly Miller.

*The Trouble with Friends* by Kelly Miller is a delightful variation of Jane Austen's *Pride and Prejudice*. The novel centers on Fitzwilliam Darcy and his close friend, Simon Lockhart, who both find themselves entangled in romantic pursuits at Netherfield Park. Lockhart becomes infatuated with Elizabeth Bennet, a spirited young woman from a modest estate, much to Darcy's dismay. Darcy, already struggling with his own burgeoning feelings for Elizabeth, attempts to dissuade his friend from pursuing her, leading to a series of misunderstandings and emotional turmoil. As the story unfolds, Elizabeth initially finds Lockhart charming and amiable, while Darcy's aloof and arrogant demeanor leaves her unimpressed. However, as circumstances force them to interact more, Elizabeth begins to see a different side of Darcy. His genuine concern for his friend and his own internal conflict make him a more complex and sympathetic character. This gradual shift in Elizabeth's perception of Darcy is one of the novel's highlights, showcasing Miller's skill in character development.

The novel is rich with the social intricacies and witty dialogue that fans of Austen's work will appreciate. Miller introduces new dynamics and twists that keep the story fresh and engaging. The tension between Darcy and Lockhart adds an interesting layer to the narrative as both men navigate their feelings for Elizabeth while trying to maintain their friendship. This conflict drives much of the plot and provides a deeper exploration of loyalty, honor, and love. Overall, *The Trouble with Friends* is a charming and well-crafted addition to the world of Austen adaptations. Kelly Miller's inventive storytelling and ability to capture the essence of the original characters while introducing new elements make this novel a must-read for fans of Regency romance. The humor, emotional depth, and entertaining twists ensure that readers will be thoroughly entertained from start to finish.

Darcy and his friend Lockhart are Bingley's guests at Netherfield. When they encounter two ladies from a neighbouring estate, both gentlemen are immediately drawn to the beautiful Elizabeth. Elizabeth on her part is attracted to Darcy but when he is tongue-tied she classifies him as arrogant and haughty. She becomes fast friends with Lockhart who is more sociable than Darcy. Darcy now tries to convince his friend that the beautiful Elizabeth is not an appropriate match, but secretly his love for her grows more and more and it is not sure if he only tries to convince his friend.
Then a previous incident forces Elizabeth to take action and make a decision she is not happy with, preventing an eventual match with Darcy. Is there a chance for their love and mutual happiness? Will the secret yearning of the two be fulfilled?

The story of the author Kelly Miller is very well written and was an enjoyable read. The story is written from Darcy's and Elizabeth's point of view.

In this book Darcy and Elizabeth are attracted to each other from the first moment, it is love at first sight. But they don't talk to each other and are too cautious to show their feelings thus they do not discover that the other share their feelings. It is a bit frustrating because the lack of communication keeps them apart but on the other side their reaction is understandable. Even today one is cautious to reveal one's feelings when one is not sure what the feelings of the others are. I was so glad when Darcy and Elizabeth finally realized that their feelings were reciprocated.

I really loved the Colonel. As always he is Darcy's rescue, without him he would have given up. I like that the Colonel is the voice of reason and that Darcy is - in the end - able to acknowledge this and listen to the Colonel's advice.

There was one thing that bothered me while reading, that was Darcy's friend Lockhart. His behaviour towards others seems sometimes undecided. I will acknowledge that is sometimes forced to act the way he did but that all does not leave a favourable impression for me. If I would encounter him in real life I would certainly avoid him because he bothered me that much. But I think that must be credited to the author's writing abilities that I feel such a strong dislike for him.

If you like love at first sight and Darcy and Elizabeth yearning in secret for each other while (love)live around them forces their action and attention, you should definitely read this book.

I highly recommend this book.
