A Charming Hex by Tonya Kappes
Magical Cures mystery series #9. Paranormal cozy mystery. Best read in series order.
June and Oscar finally have time to go on an island honeymoon. But a new charm and a bad dream worry June enough to want to bring her cat and crystal ball on the trip but she’s promised no magic. The couple hoped for Hawaii or Jamaica but the magical town counsel believes a small, secluded island is a better option. Until the groom turns up dead and June is in the middle of another investigation.

🎧 I prefer audiobooks for this author. I listened to an audiobook version narrated by Karen Savage who has done the full series. Specific voices and emotional stress is easily heard including the cat 😂. I listened at a speed of 1.6 for this to better match regional conversation speed.

Entertaining. Closed door.

I have to say that this book was my favorite of the series so far! June's latest adventure takes her and Oscar away from the charming village of Whispering Falls to tropical Tulip Island for their honeymoon - and June has promised "no magic" while they are gone. Although much of the book takes place on Tulip Island, I just have to say that I love the charming village of Whispering Falls - the small whimsical details that really contribute to the story such as June's charm/protection bracelet, the beautiful doors to the unique shops in town, June's potions that pick the proper bottle themselves for each different one, the singing Nettles - love this stuff and so clever of the author - she has a great imagination! I also really enjoy the quirky characters of the town as well as June's familiars Mr. Prince Charming and Madame Torres - they are hilarious! Now, the adventure - Tulip Island is chosen by the Council for June and Oscar's honeymoon which should tell you something. The author's descriptive writing gives you a great visual of this idyllic paradise - sounds like the pictures I have seen of the Maldives (loved their villa!) - I felt like I was on vacation too! But it doesn't take long for June to become involved in trouble - all is not as it seems in paradise as one of the other guests on the island is murdered and both June and Oscar get involved, creating some conflict between them. The story was suspenseful and the killer not readily apparent - and the conclusion contained a few twists of magic that I didn't see coming!

Although I did receive a complimentary copy of this book from the author, that did not in any way influence my review.

I received a copy of this book from the author in exchange for an honest review.

I love the Tonya Kappes Charming Mysteries Series, and A Charming Hex is the latest, and best, in the series.

June Heal and Oscar Park finally get their honeymoon, and Oscar is desperate for June & Oscar time, sans magic. But magic - and murder - seem to be everywhere! Will they solve the mystery in time to enjoy their honeymoon?

Another outstanding 5-star from the wonderful Tonya Kappes!

This was another good read in the series. In this one June and Oscar are going on their honeymoon. Of course there ends up being a murder. Even though it's their honeymoon they get involved in finding out who did it. Of course they solve it and everything is good for now.

This was my first Tonya Kappes series, so I think it will always be my sentimental favorite. In this book, the 9th in the series, Oscar and June are ready to head for their honeymoon. They are headed to a secluded island, so everything should be restful and romantic, right? No such luck....another guest is murdered, and June manages to find herself in the middle of the investigation. Will she be able to keep her "no magic" promise to Oscar, or will she have to disappoint him once again?

Tonya comes through once again, with a very well-written, fast-paced story of murder, magic, romance and humor. The people of Whispering Falls are like old friends at this point, and I always look forward to spending time with them. Tonya pays great attention to detail, both in settings and in personalities, so that readers can feel they are right there in the story.

Confusing

I wish I had better things to say, but this book seemed a little rushed, especially near the end. Spoiler alert: There were not nearly enough clues given during the short action on the island and the appearance of certain characters from the village was just as confusing as they are. They neither added anything material to the story nor the comic relief that I think the author was hoping for. In addition, the relationship between the heroine and her husband is just plain strange. They have only been married a short time and I couldn't say for sure if Oscar really even likes her. The on/off quality of their relationship would spell doom in real life, and I'm not sure why I would find it mixed into escape reading.

Absolutely Awesome! June and Oscar went on their honeymoon to Tulip Island. Prior to the trip June had a nightmare which typically means someone is going to die. What was supposed to be a honeymoon without magic, finds a little magic indeed being used. This story was so good I had to read it in one sitting! You can't help but fall in love with June, Oscar, Mr. Prince Charming and the rest of the folks in Whispering Falls, KY.

I didn't like Oscar in this book. He was condescending bossy toward June. I didn't get that impression in previous books. I hope he cleans up his act in the next book.

A Charming Hex by Tonya Kappes made me feel bad for June and Oscar. They can't even go on a honeymoon without finding a dead body.
Will Oscar and June have a relaxing honeymoon on the beach or be sucked into another mystery?
June Heal Park
June Heal Park and Oscar Park are finally going on their honeymoon. It just took them another few months to be able to do this, but it's finally here. They are both super excited to be able to go off somewhere else to be alone and have some fun. Well, they are off to a rocky start when June has a nightmare and is having a hard time with actually leaving the area that they have called home for the past two years. Anyways, June tries her hardest to stay out of the investigation once it gets started, but she just can't. It seems that being a sleuth is now part of who she is. I still like June as a character and that she is getting used to the idea that she is a spiritualist. She seems to grow into the person she was always meant to be.
A Charming Hex CRThe Mystery
June and Oscar end up getting involved in the investigation. I had no clue about who did it and why. My mind couldn't figure out why anyone would kill the guy. June had the help of Oscar and her familiars to solve the case. Well, really, Oscar is the one investigating, not June. I didn't see who did and why they did it until it was all laid out for me. Leave it to the council to send June to do their bidding even on their honeymoon.
Five Stars
A Charming Hex by Tonya Kappes is an excellent book that will keep you guessing. Honestly, I feel so bad that June couldn't have at least her honeymoon with no dead bodies. However, Ms. Kppes does a fantastic job of setting the scene for June to have to figure out why they died.

I am giving A Charming Hex by Tonya Kappes five stars and recommending it to anyone that wants to read a great summertime cozy paranormal mystery book.

A Charming Hex by Tonya Kappes is a must read. I love that June and Oscar finally get to go on their Honeymoon. They both need a little break from their daily lives and to spend time together without any "magic". When June has her nightmares and receives her protection charm from Mr. Prince Charming she just knows she won't be able to go without some of her magical items. Once on the island it seems her nightmares come true and she and Oscar have to figure out what happened so they can get back home where they belong. I love that Patience Karima is opening up and being a little more adventurous and not doing everything that her sister Constance does in this book. Such a wonderful book in the series and really enjoyed it.

June and Oscar are finally getting their honeymoon. They are going to Tulip Island and it will be perfect. Right? June has never been anywhere like that before and is a little apprehensive. There is to be a destination wedding while they are there, but then the groom ends up dead before the wedding. June isn't blamed this time, but she sure isn't going to sit around on beach. She is going to help solve this murder. Things aren't always what they seem.

Not my favorite of the series. The first half of the book was very slow. There wasn't much that connected to the mystery. It really seemed as if the majority of the first half could have been left out of the book without it affecting the ultimate storyline. The second half of the book was wonderful. It was fast paced. It read well and had a lot going on. As a stepping stone in the overall series, it was a mere pebble.

June and Oscar are finally going on a honeymoon. June promised no magic. RIGHT!!!!Her and Oscar get involved in a murder investigation with the local police to find the killer. The island was suppose to be safe. Just a few people at a time on island. Wasn't so safe for the dead man on the beach. Love this series. I normally don't read this type of genre but it has wonderful characters and story.

This is such a nice series to read, if you can get passed all the mistakes. If the author had an editor who caught her incomplete sentences, and inconsistencies in where the characters are, this would be a 5 star review. I feel the main character should have grown up from the first book. Sadly, she's still the same "new to her intuition, doesn't listen to anyone, and breaks promises" like she has been from A Charming Crime.

Honeymoon at last!

June and Oscar go on their honeymoon, the place chosen by the three Mary's.
Although Oscar and June agreed to go as mortals neither one adhered to the agreement. The lovely island they went to was beautifully tropical. Unfortunately, they weren't alone-even tho it was a tiny island.

June and Oscar's attempt at a honeymoon is anything but romantic and relaxing. Fun to see them out of Whispering Falls and fun to see how comes to help them solve the murder. I enjoyed reading about June and some special abilities, although temporary. Love visiting Whispering Falls and its charming residents and looking forward to reading about their newest ones.

When the husband to be of one the other guests is murdered June instincts teller to find the murder. Can she do it before more bodies drop

Basically, June and Oscar finally get to go on their honeymoon. Unfortunately, even on her honeymoon June can't escape from a murder. Trouble just seems to follow her no matter where she goes. In this one, we meet some interesting new characters as well as revisit with some of our originals. It was an enjoyable read.

June and Oscar finally get their honeymoon! The destination was picked by the counsel and they chose Tulip Island. It is an island that only allows 10 tourists at a time. June and Oscar should have a nice relaxing time. Unfortunately, June is having nightmares which doesn’t lend itself to a relaxing time. Only June could find a murder on such a small island!

Loved the twist and turns of this story. I did wish June was a bit more open with Oscar in this book, but she I feel like she wants to help others and protect those she loves so much that she doesn't always think clearly.

I figured out the who-done-it pretty early in the book, but didn't feel like it took anything away from the story. Excited for the next book in the series.

Yes my review stars are falling. The storyline is good.

June can't even go on her honeymoon without getting embroiled in another murder.
Although I enjoy the stories centered around Whispering Falls, the Author continues to have grammatical errors and continuity issues.

A charming hex:

I started reading Tonya Kappes books a few years ago. I love her take on the human emotions and psyche. She’s also great at little surprises in her books. Highly recommend for a good feel mystery any time.
