It's snowing, and that means no school! Arthur wants to join his friends at the hill for sledding and fun, but he has to wait with D.W. until the roads are ploughed. By the time Dad says they can go, all of Arthur's friends are back home sipping hot chocolate. Arthur is disappointed, until his Dad produces a brand new sled. Arthur, Dad, and D.W. have a blast on the hill and Arthur realizes some things are worth waiting for.
Marc Tolon Brown is perhaps best known for his series of children's books about Arthur the aardvark, which was turned into an animated television show on PBS. Brown is a three-time Emmy Award winner, for his role on the television show inspired by his books.
He lives on Martha's Vineyard and in New York City with his wife, Laurie Krasny Brown. He has three children, sons Tolon and Tucker, and daughter Eliza. The names of his two sons have been hidden in all of the Arthur books except for one: Arthur's Tooth.
Ahhh. The obstacles and compromises one must make that prove challenging to face when you are a child. Hey even for us oldsters. But here you read of having patience, and think of others instead of what you want to do. Disappointment can be short-lived. Some good may very well come your way. Arthur found that out, and was rewarded for his noble actions. He didn't miss out of experiencing the Big Snow after all. What pleasant memories.
The line Arthur's mom says in the end, "Good things are worth waiting for.", was an awesome way to end the book. The illustrations are awesome, as usual, and just a wonderful story in general.
This was a really good Arthur book.... it starts with a big snow came down and there is no school. Arthur's friends are all going to meet at the big hill to sled. But Arthur can't go without DW and she can't walk through the deep snow until the snow plow comes through. He's very disappointed but decides to make the best of it and go outside..DW wants to go with him so he helps her put her clothes on and they go outside. She decides she can't move so they go back in. She wants him to play a game with her, then read to her etc all pretty much against what he wants to do. But being the good brother he is he does those things with her. Then the plow comes through and about that time his friends call and tell him he missed a great time and they were all having chocolate now. He is depressed and says he missed out on all the fun...his dad has a new sled and they go out as a family (pre Baby Kate) and they have fun with getting the hill all to themselves! Arthur in the end realizes that he had in fact had a good day that day, wasn't what he started out wanting to do but spending time with his sister and family was great. A perfect book to help teach children that spending quality family time together is good.
As reviewed by 6 year old Mathea: "It's really good and I like the part when they go sledding." [anything else?] "It's funny when Arthur is in his pajamas!"
My kids are big Arthur fans. Simple stories that they can easily relate to. This is one of those stories. We love a good snow day with outside play, board games, and sledding!
