The weekend just gone, my partner and I went to one of our favourite places, Conwy in North Wales. Earlier this year, the town saw the opening of The Little Ghost Shop, where you can buy your own little ghosts to take home. This trip saw us buying 5 little ghosts between us, bringing our growing collection to 7. The reason I am giving this information as the starting point of my review, is that it hopefully goes some way to show you just how much I love ghosts, and anything vaguely spooky. So perhaps it is no surprise that I was going to love this little book.
Reading this reminded me of "Ghoulia" by Barbara Cantini (I would definitely recommend this series - go check it out). Little Ghost has been haunting his house with his mother for 100 years. Over the years, they have seen many families come and go, but Little Ghost has never felt brave enough to make himself known. But when a new family moves in next door, and it is Halloween, he begins to feel a little braver. Maybe this will be the perfect time of the year to try and make a new friend.
This is a very cute book. The illustrations are very sweet; there is a lot of detail to them, and the colours have a lovely autumn palette. For younger ones, the story also has a sweet message, letting them know that if they struggle to feel confident making friends, others may be feeling just the same way. And true friends will accept you exactly as you are.
Because of its message, this book would be perfect for younger ones at any time of the year. But if, unlike me, you can hold off to reading it during spooky season, it would make a very good companion then too.

"Little Ghost loves every inch of his neighborhood, but most of the year, he stays home. He's afraid he'll scare his neighbors. At Halloween, though, Little Ghost blends right in."
It's daunting to try to make friends, especially if you’re a ghost. People might get frightened and run away. However, Little Ghost is determined this time, and with Halloween approaching, it seems like the perfect opportunity.
Little Ghost just wants to make a friend, and Halloween is its time to shine. This story is incredibly cute and is sure to melt your heart.

The illustrations are lovely. The story is wonderful. There is a nice balance of text to page. The illustrations are detailed while not being overwhelming. I loved the characters and they were dynamic while being simple enough for a picture book.
Absolutely would recommend as a fall read.

Little Ghost Makes a Friend was a delightful picture book following a ghost as he tries to become friends with his new neighbor.
Little Ghost and his mom have lived in their house for years with new neighbors coming and going. When a new girl moves in next door that Little Ghost has a lot in common with, he wants to introduce himself so they can be friends. But Little Ghost isn't sure how to make friends until he comes up with the idea to invite her over for a Halloween party!
The illustrations in Little Ghost Makes a Friend were wonderful and I really enjoyed the art style in the book. The color scheme is appealing and the ghost was particularly cute. I thought the premise, a ghost trying to figure out how to make a friend without scaring them away, was fun and I liked how the ghost went about it. The new girl accepts the ghost as a friend and even introduces him to some of her friends which was sweet.
Overall Little Ghost Makes a Friend was a cute book and I would highly recommend it for the Halloween season.

It's anything but revolutionary but it strikes the perfect tone for fall. Cozy, sweet, and a little bit spooky. It's basically a pumpkin spice latte with a ghost cookie on the side. Basic? Yes. But there's a place for that.
2 stars but ALMOST rounded up to 3. Let's say 2.4.

Little Ghost and his mother had haunted the same house for one hundred years. The little specter had always wanted to make friends, but was too shy and insecure to take the first step. Then Anya and her mother moved into the house next door, and Little Ghost decided the time had come. Gathering his courage, he invited his new neighbor to a party at his house on Halloween night. But would she come? And most importantly, would she like him...?
Little Ghost Makes a Friend is a the first book I have read from author/illustrator Maggie Edkins Willis, who appears to have also produced some graphic novels. It pairs a sweet and winsome tale of a shy ghost who finds a friend and a sense of belonging with cute cartoon-style illustrations. It is the second book in as many days that I have read with this theme—the first being Ben Clanton's Boo Who? —and ties with Jane Yolen's Beneath the Ghost Moon as my favorite Halloween book that I've read this year. I loved some of the little visual details—the ghostly versions of classic books in Little Ghost's living room, such as "Grave New World!"—and enjoyed the happy ending. Recommended to picture book readers looking for sweet rather than scary ghostly fare for Halloween.

Some ghosts aren't as spooky as a person might think, and instead, make the best neighbors ever. This ghost slides perfectly into that category.
Little Ghost lives in a friendly neighborhood and in the 'haunted' house between the normal ones. He enjoys living with his ghost mom and likes to watch the people do their thing every day. He especially enjoys Halloween but would like to, maybe, have a party of his own. When a little girl moves in next door, he sees his chance to finally make a friend, but obviously, this isn't going to be an easy thing to accomplish.
While this book starts with a tiny-little hint of haunted house vibes...the Little Ghost does live in a run-down house, after all... the ghost's wonderful personality shines through almost immediately. The ghost isn't bitter about being along with its mother, nor are there ever any negative vibes. Instead, this tale looks at the nervousness and hopes at something, which will be hard to achieve. And maybe not at all doable. The support of the ghost's mother is light but just enough to give a wholesome atmosphere, and the little girl adds a friendly touch. There's also a nice amount of humor built in during the party.
Most of all, this is a lovely tale of friendship and leaves with a smile. It's a fun read for the Halloween season and is sure to get the word 'again' more than once or twice.

Little Ghost Makes a Friend is a heartwarming story about the fears and hopes that come with trying to make a new friend—and how those worries can melt away when we embrace who we truly are. With whimsical illustrations and a quietly determined protagonist, this debut picture book captures the emotional complexity of shyness and the sweetness of connection.
What makes this story especially charming is the way Little Ghost plans his Halloween party down to the last detail, all in the hope of making a friend. His efforts are endearing, but it’s the moment when he realizes that being himself is the best costume of all that truly shines. The book sends a meaningful message in a delightfully subtle way: you don’t have to change who you are to be accepted.
Maggie Edkins Willis has created a cozy, gentle read that’s perfect for Halloween but works year-round as a reassuring story about social anxiety, courage, and self-acceptance. A lovely choice for classroom shelves and bedtime reading alike.

Dear Elena,
It’s almost fall, which means Halloween is just around the corner. I’ve already given you a few Halloween-themed books, but this one is by far the best. "Little Ghost Makes a Friend" is both cutesy and cozy.
The story is about a little ghost who, as the title suggests, is shy and finds it hard to make friends. I totally understand how he feels—making friends used to be challenging for me, too. But the book shows that with determination and faith in yourself, you can overcome these challenges. That’s exactly what Little Ghost does, and I hope that if you ever find yourself in a similar situation, you’ll remember this story and do the same.
Love,
Titi Laura

Little Ghost, our main character, and his mom have been "haunting their creaky old house, just the two of them, for a hundred years" and I love the single parent representation. I appreciate that Little Ghost's new friend, Anya, is a young woman of color who seems to have a single mother, too. The illustrations in the book are adorable, especially the cookies that Little Ghost decorates. However, the plot and storytelling are not my favorite. I would rent this title from the library, but I wouldn't buy it.

I recieved an ARC of this book for my honest opinion.
Little Ghost really wants a friend but is worried everyone won’t like him because he’s…a ghost. I thought this was a cute little book. I loved the bubbly illustrations which made me just feel ready for fall. Little Ghost and his friend are adorable and I love that she helps him find more friends as well. A great book about getting out there to make friends and accepting yourself for who you really are.

2024 Picture Book. American Author/Illustrator.
Little Ghost wants to be friends with the girl next door. How will he approach her without scaring her? Maybe Halloween is the perfect time for a ghost to make a friend.
What I liked: Cute illustrations, sweet message.
What I didn't like: Story was really simple, and missed some opportunities for humour.
Overall, worth adding to a library that needs a more substantial Halloween representation.

September 14, 2024LITTLE GHOST MAKES A FRIEND is a cute new story that has arrived just in time for Fall and Halloween. Little Ghost lives in a creaky old house with his mom. One day a girl moves into the house next door and Little Ghost is determined to make his first friend. Kids will relate to shy Little Ghost as he notices their common interests and tries to reach out a friend. I love all of the sweet details in the illustrations. An adorable, non-scary Halloween story.
