When Maureen Gould’s former client, Tony Paredes, known as “The Millionaire,” is accused of killing his abuser, she believes he’s innocent. But the authorities don’t care. They throw him into jail with violent criminals who almost beat him to death to extort money he doesn’t have.
As he recovers in the hospital, Maureen must find the evidence that will convince a jury to acquit him. If he goes back, the next beating will surely kill him. The Millionaire is the sequel to Ippy-award winning Implied Consent. If you like powerful and authentic woman heroes, you’ll love the Maureen Gould.
Lefty, Agatha, and Silver Falchion nominated author of DEADLY SOLUTION.
Keenan Powell's first publication included illustrations in Dungeons and Dragons, 1st edition, while in high school. Art seemed to be an impractical pursuit – she wasn’t an heiress, didn’t have the disposition to marry well, and hated teaching – so she went to law school instead. The day after graduation, she moved to Alaska. As a young pup, she provided criminal defense representation in a variety of cases spanning from the infamous federal walrus round-up case to murder. Her first book, Deadly Solution, was nominated for an Agatha, a Lefty and short-listed for a Silver Falchion award. It also won first place in the Alaska Professional Communicators Contest and third place in the National Federation of Press Women Communication Contest. Her second book, Hemlock Needle, won first place in the Alaska Professional Communicators Contest and second place in the National Federation of Press Women Communication Contest In addition to writing the Maeve Malloy series, she has published a number of short stories including The Banshee of Adams, Mass. which short-listed for the Al Blanchard award. She currently writes a legal column, Ipso Facto, for the Sisters in Crime Guppy section newsletter, First Draft. She is a member of Sisters in Crime, Mystery Writers of America, International Thriller Writers, and the Historical Novel Society. Currently, she is blogging with Miss Demeanors.
The author says it better than I do: The Millionaire bounces back and forth between two stories; that of Tony Paredes and also Rick Stevens, which are both centered on their relationship to the murder victim, Oscar Wenderholm. The judicial system previously went horribly wrong for Tony. He won a historically large verdict against his former teacher, Wenderholm, for sexual abuse. But when it was learned that the jurors had gone online during the deliberations (very much against the rules) and brought in the evidence they had found (very, very much against the rules), the verdict was set aside.
The character development was first-rate and even better than in the first book. I loved Maureen, as well as her brilliant daughter, Quinn, and her supportive husband, Jake. The "mama-bear," Yolanda, might have been my favorite, though. It's a wee bit difficult to review this book without spoilers, so I'll leave it at this: I was positive I knew how The Millionaire was going to end ... but I was wrong. I like it when that happens!
Big thanks to both #ThreeHooligansPressLLC and #NetGalley for the opportunity to read and review an early copy of #TheMillionaireAMaureenGouldLegalThriller." #KeenanPowell #IsTruthForSale
Book two in the Maureen Gould legal thriller series will keep you up into the wee smalls! The author, a lawyer herself, invests private attorney Gould, her prosecutor husband Jake, and daughter Quinn (an attorney wannabe) with such authenticity that I feel they are family. I even adore their kitty Germaine Greer.
The court scenes explode as Gould defends Tony Paredes, accused of murdering his former coach Oscar, who raped him at school. Oscar's wife contends Tony is guilty. Senior Prosecutor Vivian Thandie, who has never lost a case, agrees. Gould fights for justice, all the while contending with her own scars as an abuse victim.
I was so gripped as the taut story unspooled that I skipped meals and virtually ignored my husband (sorry, darling).
If you love legal thrillers that are smart, jet-paced, and ring with such truth that you can't put them down, THE MILLIONAIRE is for you. Highly recommended!
Thanks to Keenan Powell and Three Hooligans Press LLC for the ARC. Opinions are mine.
This book gave me life lessons about the importance of carefully considering our options. The truth about our wounds is that it may need to be disclosed to our significant other, even if we are concealing them for our own sake. Though we might not realize it, but sharing something could help us with our challenges. As for Maureen, I can see why she feels compelled to hide her wounds at first as they have been a burden on her life, but talking to and sharing with a close family member or friend is the only way for her to feel better.
I liked this book even though Dakota could have ended the book if he shared his part but where is fun in that yea? 😅 Anyway this book kept me on my toes until the very end. I always wanted to pursue Law and reading this makes me want to pursue it more. There were no lag moments and this has been BY FAR the best law related thriller book I've ever read. So excited for everybody to read this book on 𝗝𝗮𝗻𝘂𝗮𝗿𝘆 𝟮𝟲, 𝟮𝟬𝟮𝟰!
Kudos to @netgalley and the author @keenan.powell for letting me read this book in advance. 🥰❤

A brilliant, powerful courtroom thriller! No tricks or antics, just pure skill and dedication to finding the truth. Well written, thoughtful character development, both believable and relatable! A great late-night read! Thank you, Netgalley and author Keenan Powell, for the opportunity to read this ARC in exchange for an honest review. 5 Stars
I received an ARC and I am voluntarily leaving an honest review.
The story reflects the steps that Maureen takes in defending Tony who has been arrested for murder. The person that Tony is accused of murdering is Oscar, the individual that Tony sued for assault earlier and that Maureen handled. Oscar was a chess teacher for the chess club at a private school. As a result of the trial verdict, Oscar was fired and Tony was expelled. Several tears pass and Oscar is now working as a guard at a warehouse. Tony had been seen earlier at Oscar's house as well at Oscar place where he was employed. The statements have Tony telling at Oscar. The night of the murder, Oscar's wife stated that she saw Tony kill Oscar. In addition, the gun used was found wrapped up in a shirt in Tony's truck.
The time for the trial arrives and Maureen does not have any evidence that would contradict the prosecution's case. The trial is drawing near when Maureen along with Quinn, Maureen's daughter working along with Yolanda, make a trip to the prison where they learned a major piece of information and which provided hope for Tony being found not guilty.
Discover what Maureen learned, how an event that happened many years earlier, who Rick was and who the last person Maureen questioned prior to the jury being given to deliberate was so pivotal, then you need to read this book.
Gould is defending Tony Paredes accused of murdering the coach who raped him when Paredes was involved in the chess club of a private school. While those closely connected with the original lawsuit that Paredes eventually lost against Oscar Wenderholm believe he murdered Wenderholm, Gould believes her client is innocent.
It’s a multi-layered plot, one that involves Gould’s own secret experience. The author has packed authentic support characters around her. There is also a very intelligent kitty named Germaine Greer that at times I forgot was a cat.
As Gould picks away at what few leads she’s gotten, her client has been badly beaten in jail and is now in the hospital. If he’s sent back—he won’t make it out alive.
It’s a multi-layered plot using Gould’s own secret and Paredes’ backstory that includes a court case he lost to jury tampering. While some of the evidence of the murder appears contrived, there seems to be a credible witness in the victim’s wife. Good storyline, great characters, and I love it when I get surprised.
I received a complimentary review copy of this book from the author and publisher through @NetGalley that in no way influenced this review. These are my honest thoughts. I’ll be looking for the next in this series. 4.5 stars

Another absolute winner of a story from Keenan Powell. After reading "Implied Consent," I just couldn't wait for Maureen's next case. I'm more invested in her thought process than anything else. The way she pieces evidence and ideas together is amazing to watch. This case was no different. Maureen's character development as she's still dealing with her own trauma while being a badass attorney and learning to be a loving and supportive mother was top notch.
The switches in the story between Maureen's point of view and that of Rick Stevens are very smooth and create an easy to follow big picture. Speaking of Rick, his character was also very well developed! A car salesman with troubling habits turned politician who's putting on a brave face for the public while dealing with his own demons. He was likable and at times I did feel sorry for him.
Keenan Powell is just an excellent writer. Five stars.
Now, the only downside is that we gotta wait until January for "The Pied Piper"... Counting down days already!
Maureen Gould doesn’t do criminal law. So when she’s contacted by a former client to mount a murder defense she demurs. Maureen’s practice is geared toward abused men and women. Which is how her client got into this situation in the first place. She successfully represented Tony Paredes against a man who abused him as a teen-ager. Successfully to the tune of a multi-million-dollar settlement. A settlement that the court overturned when it was discovered a juror violated the rules and feed news stories to the rest of the jury. Now Tony’s abuser is dead. And he’s accused of the murder.
Powell weaves a masterful story of courtroom drama, human nature, and high-level chicanery that will have you turning pages deep into the night. It was an ending I never saw coming. I highly recommend this book, and this series. Looking forward to more.
Full disclosure. I received this book from NetGalley in return for a fair and honest review.
Many thanks to NetGalley and Three Hooligans Press for the free e-arc in exchange for my honest review.
I am new to the Maureen Gould series but definitely will be reading more from this collection. Maureen is an attorney that takes on a criminal defense case for one of her former clients. This is normally not her area of expertise but she is more than capable as she came from the DA's office.
Tony Paredes was abused by his chess coach when he was a boy in school. Years later he filed a civil lawsuit against the school and his abuser. He was awarded one million dollars, but the award was stopped due to jury tampering. The abuser is shot and killed. Tony is arrested for his murder.
This is a well written, thoughtful, legal thriller with great character development, both believable and relatable! Highly recommend.
Extremely happy to find this new author, new to me anyway. I guess I was subconsciously thinking of this as a dot to dot with one thing leading to another until you find the answer but I was wrong. Within the story are three separate story lines. There's the story involving the attorney. There's a story involving the defendant. And there's a story involving the politician.. There is the assumption that they will come together. The story is created In an incredible maze with many dead ends, mistaken turns and seemingly no correct path to the solution, until... This was a story that kept me up past my bedtime and brings the possibility of more to read from this talentedauthor
I really enjoyed this book! Maureen is such a freaking smart, strong, and relatable character—I love following her through these legal twists and turns. The writing is sharp, the courtroom drama is gripping, and the story kept me hooked from start to finish.
I understand that since this is the second book in the series, some details have to be repeated for new readers, but if you know it’s book two, I highly recommend reading the first book first. That way, you get the full backstory without feeling like parts are being re-explained.
Overall, it’s an excellent, well-written legal thriller, and I can’t wait to keep following Maureen’s journey in the next
The Millionaire is one of the best legal thrillers I've read. It has a great storyline, it's fast-paced and well-written. It has a lot of emotion as the story involves sex crimes and incredibly high people manipulation. The characters are credible and I could relate with Tony, the story's main victim. Although a work of fiction, I wonder if sometimes manipulations like this happen in the back stage of certain elections worldwide. This is the first book that I've read by Ms. Powell and I'll be certainly looking forward to reading her other titles. I thank the author, her publisher, and NetGalley for the copy of this book.
The Millionaire was my first book by Keenan Powell and I absolutely loved it! I will be picking up Implied Consent ASAP so I can have more Maureen Gould in my life. In recent years I have become a huge fan of legal thrillers and Keenan Powell writes with the best of them.
The characters were so interesting to read about and had so much depth in their stories. I love books with multiple POVs and they were so easy to follow in this book.
I cannot wait to go back and read Implied Consent and am already looking forward to the next!
I received an advanced copy of the book in exchange for my review. Thank you to NetGalley and Three Hooligans Press for the book!
I have been waiting impatiently for more books to come out in this new series! There are now two out with Book 3 up for preorder. I stayed up until 3 a.m. last night finishing The Millionaire, Book 2.
I love anything that Keenan Powell writes, but her stories are not for the faint-hearted. She addresses difficult topics in our society and does so with both sensitivity and clarity.
I enthusiastically recvommend this book, and I have preordered Book 3 (due out in January, 2025).
This is another good one and not a middle of the road dud. It leans heavily on #1 in that Maureen Gould is defending a former client on a murder charge. There's a sideline protagonist that plays into the drama and makes it continually intriguing. Suffice to say that it stays exciting and I like the legal thriller without too much legalese. Maureen makes some personal breakthroughs that are heartwarming to witness. I gotta go with 5 stars!
Tony Paredes was abused by his chess coach when he was in school. Years later he filed a civil lawsuit against the school and his abuser. He was awarded one million dollars, but the award was stopped due to jury tampering. The abuser is shot and killed. Tony is arrested for his murder. Maureen Gould represents Tony for his trial. A really good storyline that keeps your interest.
This is an amazing suspense story. It does need a trigger warning because there is abuse mentioned in it, but it isn't detailed graphically. There are quite a few suspects and it wasn't until the last twenty pages or so that I figured it out. If you like mysteries, I recommend this one for sure.
This was a great book. I loved every paragraph, every sentence and every word of this masterpiece! I read it in 12 hours, which is a lot for me to do! It had everything and more laid out in the novel! I sure hope There is more to come from this author! I am totally hooked!
Second book in the series, with a protagonist that is worth some more stories in her future. A well -crafted plot and a fast pace make for an enjoyable read. I received an advanced copy of this book from NetGalley and the people and voluntarily provided an honest review.
Thank you to Net Galley and the publisher for the ARC**
Maureen Gould believes her former client is innocent of murdering his rapist, a coach at his chess club. A courtroom drama with a twist at the end. Not very gory or descriptive with crime scene details.
I like the way the characters have problems but they don't dwell too much on them. I also like the interesting story line and the way it wraps up in the end.
I loved this book. It kept you in suspense almost to the end. It showed how things go in a trial that most people have no idea about unless they’re in the legal system. This was a well written book. I will try to find other books by this author.
Meh. It was okay. TW for SA (not greatly detailed). Lots of legal jargon. Multiple POVs. Relatively fast paced. Didn’t have the suspense and twists that I enjoy.
I just finished the 2nd book in the series. They were great page-turners. The plots held my interest so I could not put either book down, I cant wait for the next one in January '25.
