I grew up in London surrounded by books and with a cat named after Lawrence of Arabia. I studied English Literature at the University of East Anglia and live in Norwich with my husband David.

I'm a total book nerd and my TBR pile is out of control. I would quite like to be a ghost hunter, and I'm a huge fan of a fictional hero.

When I'm not writing, I spend my spare time reading, returning to London or exploring the beautiful Norfolk coastline.

I love hearing from readers, so please get in touch if you have a question or if you just want to say hello.

Jess and Ash have just met.

Oh my word. The Happy Hour is absolutely lovely. With an initial touch of mystery about where Ash has to be each Sunday, Cressida McLaughlin draws in the reader to this wonderfully romantic story from the very first page in a story that I found totally captivating.

I loved the market setting with its cast of quirky people who feel like a microcosm of society. There’s a real sense of community and Cressida McLaughlin’s descriptions of the stalls, the aromas, the items for sale, all make for a very vivid picture. My only complaint is that the descriptions of the muffins made me ravenous the whole time I was reading!

Those market characters are so warmly created. Even the ones like Roger who play relatively minor roles feel true to life and realistic. I adored Felicity as, through her own vulnerabilities and strengths, she illuminates the other characters, bringing them into sharp focus. She also exemplifies how appearances can be deceptive and that we never quite know what is happening in another person’s life or behind their front door. I’d love there to be future books following on from The Happy Hour, developing the stories of the people at the market.

It is, of course, Jess and Ash who steal the show, partly because they are both equally stubborn and misguided as well as equally vivacious, friendly, caring and attractive so that they are well rounded and convincing. I cared so much about them, feeling their emotions with them and I admit to shedding a tear or two over them as well as laughing with them. In Jess and Ash, Cressida McLaughlin has created something very special indeed because, as they work through their own demons, they are hugely relatable. They show how we are affected by our past and our upbringing, but that we cannot allow it to dominate our future. They also show how, whilst we might not be able to control what happens in our present life, we can decide how to respond. The Happy Hour is a wise and uplifting book as well as being entertaining and absorbing to read.

Indeed, whilst Cressida McLaughlin creates a gorgeous romance, The Happy Hour is steeped in psychological understanding. Grief and loneliness, self-preservation, identity and independence, are threads of the story that make it so wonderful as well as gloriously escapist.

I truly adored The Happy Hour. Not only is it emotional and beguiling, it’s warm and encouraging too. Reading The Happy Hour took me away from the cares of the real world and left me feeling uplifted and content – feelings we could all do with from time to time…

Oh my. So hard. To find words about this book.
And not because it was brilliant. I usually enjoy Cressida McLaughlin's books, although her latest offers bored me to tears, to be honest, but I thought that this one, with this really great synopsis and gorgeous, gorgeous cover, will be different.
It wasn't. I think I've got it now - and as much as I hate to use this words in my reviews, I have to say - it was a boring story. I kept reading, eventually finding myself skimming and skipping more and more, because I had a feeling nothing happens there. I had problems with Jess as a main character, she was simply not my kind of character, closed, wanting to do everything by herself, pushing people away, and sure, she was very consequent in being like this, but talking to people and clearing the air would simply help. Ash was also not so my cup of tea, they both felt so reserved and I didn't buy into their love story.
The subplot of the market, of Felicity, of Lola and her music, of helping, rescuing was so often used and re - used and it made the book so, so slow. The more I read, the less interested I was.

Sadly, it was not a book for me. This extra star is for the cover.

Never judge a book by its cover. This one you can the perfect cover for a perfect read. On to a winner set in Greenwich and using one of my favourite modes of transport so much the river boat. I love the story of Jess and Ash. It's full of passion and love, the ups and downs the downright depressing parts of life. They are far from perfect but that makes them all the more real. I love the meeting for sixty minutes a week thing going on at the start every Sunday until it becomes so many more hours and days. It could feel the romance is rushed however it's so beautiful written it's almost too perfect. It gets away with it with all the other wonderful characters at the market too. It's a book you can easily fall in love with.

I’ve spent the weekend with the gorgeous Jess and Ash in The Happy Hour. Their story is a perfect blend of happy, sad and romance. The pining and the challenging and the learning to find some give, was a joy. The market is a brilliant location, but my goodness this book is a love song to Greenwich too. AND I totally loved the Hester and Jake cameo, from The Staycation. If you’re looking for a gorgeous London romance, look no further.

This was such a lovely read from Cressida. I think it was her best yet. Set in and around Greenwich Park it had such lo Ely and interesting characters in it that I was sad to finish this one. My thanks to netgalley and the publishers for giving me the opportunity to read this book in return for an honest review.

A brand new book from Cressida McLaughlin. It also had a bit of a more grown up edgy feel to it. As the story of Jess and Ash and the small group of traders unfold some very deep issues are dealt with in such a wonderful way. It was eye opening to see the perceived impression you might have of someone to be the opposite. We all go to lengths to always try and portray our best selves and try to be seen as good enough and ‘normal’ (but what really is normal?), and it takes a lot of bravery to show that everything isn’t as it seems and some support is needed.

This group of traders are in the middle of London, a place that is perceived to be so huge that the people are faceless and strangers to each other as they are so busy going about their day. This just shows that a close knit friendship group can happen anywhere, with people from all walks of life and ages. It was really nice to read.

The love story between Jess and Ash, I have to admit was a bit hard to get my head around at first that an hour a day would be enough, when there was so much that they just weren’t sharing with each other, but gradually they extend the time they spend together and the contact they have with each other and it’s clear to see the positive impact they each have the other, drawing strength and helping ease anxiety. It was lovely to read. As they grew and changed their lives touched others that also grew and changed and in turn they touched others. Friendship, the gift that keeps in giving.

It was a brilliant read from the start, demonic rabbits included.

Jess is perfectly happy working in Greenwich market with her job in a cramped gift shop that sells trinkets to locals and tourists. She is happy with her small circle of friends and being single. In other words, she thinks she is doing just fine.

One Sunday, Jess is thrown together with handsome, funny Ash as they chase a pickpocket through the market. Sharing a coffee after their success, Ash and Jess soon start to enjoy one hour every Sunday. Is one hour a week really enough time to fall in love…?

I was absolutely thrilled to be able to read this book before publication. So far, I have enjoyed all of Cressida's books and always look forward to her next one.

I enjoyed the setting of Greenwich Market, and I think the author really brought the hustle and bustle atmosphere to life. At times, it felt like I was walking through the market, chatting with the traders, exploring the neighbourhood.

This story is filled with great characters that added a nice dimension to the story, and there was a good mix of funny and sad moments. I loved the market community and the sense of helping & supporting each other. Felicity's story really showed the positive impact of reaching out for help.

I had to message the author to check if I needed a large box of tissues. I did wonder why Ash only had an hour and where he was going.

Jess and Ash’s story is slow-burning and, at times, riddled with miss-communication. You will really root for them and hope that they will sort themselves out.

This is a standalone but would also work well as part of a series, exploring the other traders' lives and catching up if Jess and Ash are doing well. I am sure Cressida will receive a few requests for a sequel.

The Happy Hour is the perfect stay-cation book for the summer.

Ahhhh, grab yourself a coffee or hot chocolate and get snuggled down with this wonderful book. Cressida has done it again, she had me chuckling out loud and fighting back tears while reading this. There are a few emotional moments in this but the majority of the book is full of joy, friendship, community and of course romance.

Jess and Ash are both the best characters and their hours together are the epitome of romance, they’re both the kindest, most thoughtful people out there but neither of them are used to putting themselves first and it’ll be a big push to let someone else in completely. As Ash doesn’t tell Jess where he goes after their hour you know something is going to go wrong somewhere down the line but I wasn’t expecting how it actually unfolded.

There are a few life lessons mixed into this and it was great to witness Jess’ revelation, alongside her confidence boost for her prints - can I just say, Hester and Jake cameo!!! 🐊 iykyn! I really liked these prints and it’s given me a little bit of a boost for me to get my craft back on when I’ve got a few hours free so thanks for that as well Cress!

A lovely book that was a lovely boost and bought a smile (and a few tears) to my face. As always, Cress doesn’t disappoint and I can’t wait for whatever she writes next!

This really dragged for me a lot, and I'll admit I skimmed a lot of the first half. Then, I started to get more interested in the story. Both the hero and heroine have a lot of baggage, and they spend a chunk of the book split up, mainly as a result of their own issues. The end is quite lovely, but definitely not one of my favorites of the author.

Cressida McLaughlin is by far my favourite author and I'm so glad I found her!

Another fantastic story. I'm not ashamed to say I cried but I also laughed and smiled a lot. Everything is described beautifully, so you really get sucked into Jess and Ash's world. I loved all the characters (apart from Ash's Dad, boo hiss lol) but especially Wendy, Jess's boss.

A must read!!!

I’ve been a long time fan of Cressida for a long while and every new book release is a frenzy to read the book as soon as I physically can because they are such fantastic reads! She isn’t an author I sit on and new material is always greatly awaited. And this one!! Gah. Such a beautiful book from start to finish.

She’s my perfect auto buy auto enjoy author and when I read the premise for this one: massive yes please!

It was just. Aw. Adorable. Wholesome. Utterly cute and SO heartwarming. I lived for the weekly hour they spent together as much as they did and I couldn’t wait to see what they would do next. The slow development betweeen them two was *weep* so utterly lovely and as they began to open up to each other and draw together it was everything.

Getting to know them both (and the lovable market crew) was also something I lived for in these books. It super endearing and the author is expert at actually making you care for the characters. They become people you root for! It made the book incredibly satisfying and it’s another firm romance fav for my bookshelf.

Thank you to the author and publisher for this book on NetGalley in return for my honest thoughts and review.

A romance where our two characters only spend 1 hour each week with each other and how that shapes their relationship.
Jess works at Greenwich Market when she bumps into Ash who helps her run down a shoplifter. They decide to go for coffee and this is the beginning of a rather unique storyline.
I really liked Jess as a character, she thinks she's better on her own, but she doesn't see the community of the market that surrounds her. I didnt feel like I got to know Ash enough, I would have liked more from him, so that I could really route for them.
I loved the market and the community of side characters and I thought this was what shone through in the book.

I love Cressida's writing and The Happy Hour is another beautiful romance story, that had me captivated from the start.
I liked the storyline of the book and the unique dating style that Jess & Ash find themselves in. Only meeting for an hour a week is such a short space of time, but they really did make the most of it. I loved the suspense and excitement that they both shown leading up to the dates and the connection and chemistry between them both was evident to see. There was also a mystery element to the story surrounding Ash and to where he kept going to and this kept me wondering and turning the pages throughout.
The setting of the book in Camden market was just so perfect and I loved all of the elements involved. I could picture myself there between the varied stalls and the muffins definitely left my mouth watering.
The characters in the book were so varied, but I really liked how everyone came together. The market stall holders really held a sense of family and I liked how people who you wouldn't normally group together, being brought together and supporting each other. You could see the character development of these characters also, especially Felicity and this proves that appearances are not everything and you truly do not know what people are going through.
The writing style of the book was really good and all of the difficult topics such as grief, loneliness and adoption were written about so well. The ending was everything I was hoping for and was perfect for the story and the characters.

The Happy Hour by Cressida McLaughlin

Can they fall in love, sixty minutes at a time?

The deliciously captivating new standalone novel from the bestselling author of The Staycation and The Cornish Cream Tea series.

Jess is happy working in Greenwich market selling trinkets to well-heeled locals and excitable tourists.

Then one Sunday, Jess is thrown together with handsome, funny Ash, as they chase a pickpocket through the market, and before long they are making a habit of running into each other at the same time each week.

Jess starts to realize that their hour together is the brightest part of her life. But Ash isn’t telling her everything – can she discover the truth before it’s too late?

My Opinion

I have yet to find a Cressida McLaughlin book that I haven't enjoyed so I was delighted when I saw that there was a new release. I would recommend making sure you are comfy when you start reading this, it was difficult to put down - I started reading late one evening and before I knew it I was over half way through. The main focus of The Happy Hour is the market where Jess works but there is so much more going on.

Cressida has written a slow-burn romance with the characters getting to know each other an hour at a time. The Happy Hour should definitely be on your reading list for this summer.

I am a huge Cressida McLaughlin fan, her The Cornish Cream Tea series has been one of my favourite and I am always excited for her to bring out something new.

The Happy Hour is her latest book and is a standalone novel and I loved it. It had the lovable characters and absorbing storyline that you expect from Cressida.

Jess is an introverted person, living within her bubble and with a very small circle, and she has been happy with this. Then one Sunday whilst working in a trinket shop in Greenwich market she meets Ash when they both chase a pickpocket through the market. This random meeting leads to them meeting at the same time each week for an hour. Spending time with Ash in their weekly hour turns into the highlight of Jess’ week, but she knows Ash is holding something back from her.

Jess and Ash are such lovable characters. You can see that they are both good for each other, but both are facing their own personal battles which is putting a blocker in between them opening up to each other properly.

There are also the wonderful different characters from the market, all that come to feel like a family. I especially warmed to Felicity and felt she had an integral role in helping Jess and Ash overcome their struggles. I think the market was a great setting for this story and a brilliant way to bring such a diverse group of characters together.

There is lots that we can take away from this book, in dealing with things such as grief and loneliness. With these things being tackled it meant that not only was the book heart-warming and romantic but also emotional, there was definitely a few times when I welled up.

This was certainly another hit from Cressida.

Book 110 of 2024 finished 28/09/24 ⭐️⭐️

Every Sunday Ash spends an hour in Greenwich market before heading off to a dreaded appointment. Whilst at the market he meets market worker Jess and they begin meeting each week and spending a ‘happy hour’ together. The couple begin to develop feelings for one another, but Ash doesn’t want to tell Jess where he goes after their hour, and Jess doesn’t want to be kept in the dark. Is one hour long enough to build a relationship that can withstand the darkness.

My thoughts: Sorry but the best thing about this book is the beautiful cover. I could not wait for it to end. The story is predictable and boring. The characters aren’t very likeable either. Jess is unbelievably immature for a woman in her thirties. She has held a grudge against her parents for YEARS over an overheard conversation (and it was so obvious she had misunderstood that it was ridiculous). Ash is more likeable than Jess, but I wasn’t invested in his character either.

The mystery about where ash is going was what kept me reading and then by the time it was properly revealed I decided I may as well finish the book but I wish I had DNFd this one.

As a fan of the Cornish Cream Tea series by this author, I’m grateful to NetGalley and the publishers for allowing me to read this heartwarming story. Ash and Jess meet at Greenwich Market one Sunday after a pickpocket tries to steal from one of the stall holders. It becomes almost a ritual that they spend an hour together each Sunday, enjoying each others company as long as they can.

This has everything I want in a good read. It drew me in from the first chapter, I wanted to know all about Jess, Ash and all the other characters, like Enzo, Wendy and particularly Felicity. They all felt so real, just like people you really want to meet and spend time with. I even loved the stalls and shops they all ran. I really wanted to know what Ash was doing every Sunday after he’d left Jess and why he couldn’t explain to,her what was going on. As always with this type of book,- no spoiler - but you know things will always work out, you just never know quite how you’re going to get there. Another excellent read from this author.

Thank you Netgalley and Harper Collins UK for an advanced copy to review.

The story follows Jess and Ash who meet by accident one Sunday in Greenwich Market and go on to meet each Sunday for one hour. This allows then to build up a friendship and budding romance. Unfortunately Ash can only spend one hour with Jess as he has somewhere to be but won't let on where. This led to lots of guessing by me.

They are both very relatable characters and have issues with their past which makes for an interesting relationship between then.

As well as Jess and Ash's story there are numerous other side storylines featuring a wonderful range of characters. I especially loved Felicity and Spade.

A beautifully written book that had me invested from the beginning. The descriptions of the Market had me wishing I was there. There was fun, laughter and heartbreak which led me to go through a whole range of emotions and I must admit to shedding a tear or two.

This is a book I would definitely recommend.

My Thoughts
I have read all of the Cornish cream tea series and Staycation by Cressida, and I buddy read this book with @lous.littlelibrary and @abilovesbooks

I don't like to be negative about a book as I have really enjoyed 90% of Cressidas stories, but I'm afraid this one wasn't for me!

I didn't gel with the characters, and I felt the story just bobbed along with not a lot happening along the way.
I found I wasn't really bothered if Jess and Ash got together in the end.
I am sorry, but I guess we can't love them all! 😔

it was so good. it's fast paced and it keeps you hooked. every character feels well rounded and well established in the world with their own personalities and relationships. it is expertly written not feeling too slow like it takes forever to get to a polt point but not so fast that everything feels like it's done and dusted in a couple of days. it is written in a way that makes sure that there's enough time between events that makes it feel natural and real. the relationship between Jess and Ash is adorable and it builds up just perfectly feeling natural and not forced. the relationship with Jess and her parents feels authentic, I loved how her relationship with them grew and she changed her opinions on them with the help of Lola. the ending was written beautifully it was just the right amount of happy/sad that had me bawling my eyes out for the last few chapters. it really was an A class read. I didn't know what I was getting into as I hadn't read anything else by Cressida McLaughlin but it did not disappoint. I will definitely be reading some more of her books in the future.

If you're looking for a wholesome London romance, look no further!

Set at a market in Greenwich, we meet Jess and Ash, who meet by chance as they chase after a thief. Jess and Ash feel an instant connection, and after agreeing to go for a quick drink to cool off, they soon realise that they've spent an hour getting to know each other. They agree to meet again at the same time next week, for an hour, during Jess' lunch break - and they never look back.

However, the real reason Ash travels to Greenwich each week soon comes to light. Can Ash and Jess' budding romance survive?

I really enjoyed getting to know every character in this book, but I especially felt a connection to Jess. Not only has this book got a lovely romance at the heart of the story, it also includes some heavier topics which are dealt with very well. A definite recommendation to any fellow romance fans from me!

Based in London, this book follows Jess and Ash, who meet at Greenwich Market after a local kid tries to swipe something from a stall. Agreeing to meet up again, same time next weekend for only 60 minutes before Ash needs to attend his “appointment”. As the weeks continue… is 60 minutes long enough to fall in love?

I do believe 60 minutes is enough to fall in love! Throughout this storyline you could feel the main characters fall because you were falling with them! I really enjoyed how Cressida writing style was for this. I absolutely adored the community within the market and how they all looked out for each other. I’d love to come across a close-knit group like this here in London. I loved the pace of this book and waiting for the next meet up, it kept the feeling of wanting more. As sweet as the story was, it did have some hard but very difficult moments which I personally prefer, it makes the story feel so realistic! The ending was perfect and wholesome, bringing a real smile to my face.

This is my first book by Cressida and I’m excited to pick up more!

What an absolutely beautiful book, It was just so heartwarming and romantic.
It’s all about Jess and the lovely Ash and the most beautiful love story which unfolds between them.
I loved all the characters in this story and their individual journeys, especially Felicity and it shows how important friendship is.
I could not put this book down and was hooked from the first page. Once Jess opened up to her parents my tears started and they didn’t stop until the end of the book. I loved every minute of this book a solid five starts and I’m hoping for a sequel.

After Jess and Ash find themselves both chasing a thief on the market, they go for a drink and decide to spend an hour together each Sunday. Eventually they start to have feelings for each other, but Ash is hiding something from Jess that is difficult for him to share.

I went into this novel expecting weird and whacky ways of spending an hour with a stranger each week, instead they spent most of their time clearing out an elderly lady's cluttered house and the mysterious place that Ash goes to afterwards became a source of tension between them.

Unfortunately there were times when I felt a little bored and I finished the book thinking I should stick to reading the Cornish Cream Tea by Cressida McLaughlin only, as her standalone books never hit the same spot with me.

I thoroughly enjoyed this story set in Greenwich amongst the many Greenwich market traders.

And what a varied bunch they are, while being a totally fabulous community that Jess is part of.

I love how she is always happy to help others, even if she isn't willing to let people get too close to her.

And then Ash enters her life and for an hour a week while she is with him, she is really happy.

I also really loved Ash, and he slotted into life in and around the market almost seamlessly.

In a story that touches on tough issues, there are also plenty of the simple pleasures in life, such as flying a kite.

Really entertaining, I loved reading this story

Thank you to HarperCollins and Netgalley for this copy which I have reviewed honestly and voluntarily.
