War on Christmas

Rate this book
A witchy loner . . .

Freya Nilsen knows exactly how she wants to spend her winter solstice: alone on her couch with a mug of mulled wine watching her favorite spooky TV show. Instead, she’s returning home to Northview, Wisconsin, where she’s always been the moody black sheep of the sunshiny Nilsen family. And is Mercury in retrograde? Because her childhood-best-friend-turned-high-school-enemy, Jeremy Kelly, is back in town for the first time in seventeen years. And he’s as handsome (and annoying) as ever.

A people-pleasing charmer . . .

Since striking out on his own at eighteen, Jeremy Kelly has single-mindedly pursued safety and security. Practical degree? Check. Practical job? Check. Practical life? Check. But lately, it’s all started to feel . . . empty. So, when Jeremy’s mom invites him home to Northview, it’s the opportunity he’s been waiting for to rediscover the parts of himself he left behind: his love of high fantasy, his talent for art . . . and his infatuation with his darkly compelling neighbor, Freya Nilsen.

Who will win the battle of wills?

Sparks—and banter—fly when Jeremy and Freya reunite, and in true rival fashion, they agree to a challenge. Freya’s goal? Seduce Jeremy into a holiday fling that ends at Christmas. No exceptions. Jeremy’s? Convince Freya that the deep connection they’ve always shared is what they’ve both been missing. Is it all just a sexy game to the longtime opponents? Or can they take the risks necessary to create a future that’s big and terrifying and intense . . . and everything they’ve ever dreamed of?

What presents will you unwrap in War on Christmas?

✎𓂃“When have I asked you to be anything–anythingother what what you are? I love you, Freya. You. I loved you then, when we were still practically kids, and I love you now. Exactly as you are.”

Did it disappoint? Meh, yes and no.

☆Quick Summ:
Witchy, nonconformist Freya Nilsen comes home to celebrate Christmas in Wisconsin with her fam, and ends up making a bet with her childhood crush/best friend/brother’s best friend/idk it’s all muddy Jeremy Kelly. The bet? That in the two weeks she’s home, she’ll be able to seduce him, and then after they part ways. Satisfy the itch they’ve been scratching since they were kids. His? That he’ll turn her into a relationship-type of woman.

☆Writing, Setting, and POVs:
This Christmas baddie is written in dual, first person from both Freya and Jeremy’s POVs, which I loved and gave us first-hand insight into both of their minds.

I love me a Midwestern romance, especially when the author is very clearly knowledgeable of the area! The Tom & Jerry references (my FAV xmas drink fr I need one RN), and the “Ope!” thrown in, completely had me lol’ing.

The writing is…okay. Not bad, but not great. It feels very matter-of-fact and repetitive, I’d like a lil more pizazz to these characters’ thoughts especially since they both love their punchy, hit-em-where-they’re-weak lines. It felt like the story dragged a bit at times, especially when being told the same things over and over again. There is a good amount of smut and it wasn’t cringey, tbh it feels fairly earned since they both worked so hard at their bet.

☆My Thoughts:
There was so much more potential for this to be a killer 5 star holiday read. Freya and Jeremy had some pretty solid banter throughout! Freya is a hilarious character, and I LOVE how dark and witchy the author portrayed her. From her devious black cat Hecate, to her mentions of spell and hex-casting, to her tarot card readings, I enjoyed everything about this aspect of her!

The rest of her…namely her stubbornness and her unwillingness to let someone love her (I mean, yes, semi understandable but STILL…GIRL…JEREMY) was annoying af. You’re a 35 year old woman, grow up.

JEREMY though. Ooooooh this MAN. He is the literal embodiment of the fire emoji. Freya often describes him as a Viking and oooooh how I LOVE a sexy Viking man lol. For all he’s been through in life, abused by his stepfather and emotionally abandoned by his mom, he’s surprisingly very mature, much more so than Freya. But his awareness of Freya is everything–he pays attention to every little thing about her. The way he WORSHIPS at her feet is *chef’s kiss* 🤌

✎𓂃“I don’t want Freya as just a friend. I want all of her. I want her earnest, penetrating looks that see into the darkest depths of me. I want her sassy red lips that continuously taunt me. I want her authenticity, bold and unapologetic, that refuses to bend to societal expectations. I want her passion. I just want…her.”

The way she gets under his skin like NO ONE can I just 🤭 There’s a super cute and hilarious Santa scene and just might be my fav in the book. Side note: the Santa hired wasn’t your typical old, jolly St. Nick…it was a HOT silver fox Santa and now I NEED that to be a thing for real LMAO.

A little naive thinking that annoying a girl to death would get her to like him (news flash it DOESN’T lol). I normally also don’t like the woman having to make amends and grovel, but for how idiotic Freya was denying herself and her emotions, it was PERFECT here.

And of course. A 3rd act breakup. Smh.

An overall cute holiday romance, but semi frustrating, and likely forgettable.

☆Quotes:
✎𓂃“But, Jeremy, that’s the best thing about having me as a friend. I’m always dressed for a funeral.”

✎𓂃“Freya was never ordinary to me.”

✎𓂃“Nothing–and I mean nothing–makes me feel alive like driving Freya Nilsen out of herr goddamn mind.”

✎𓂃“If my broomstick was working, why would I need a ride from you?”

✎𓂃“I want to unwrap her like the world’s sexiest Christmas present and run my tongue along every line of ink on her perfect, glowy skin.”

I didn't know I needed a witchy Christmas rom-com in my life until I read this book. Funny, real, sweet AND spicy.

Freya and Jeremy used to be the best of friends... until they kissed when they were 14. Then, they became rivals, only to not speak after high school even though they live in the same city. But when they both have to come home around Christmas, 17 years later, they realize that spark is still there. Freya just wants to keep it a casual fling until Christmas and then go their separate ways, but Jeremy wants to show Freya that they can be more than just casual. Team friendship and team seduction was then created and both of them are determined to win this little competition.

This book was absolutely wonderful. The way Freya was 100% herself, even to the extreme, was such a breath of fresh air. I especially loved that she is a fellow Scorpio and felt her feelings so deeply. Jeremy was absolutely a golden retriever, everywhere but in private. *wink wink* He had his own things at home to get through, and I was so proud of both of these characters by the end of the book. Their character growth was great.

I bow down to you, Elle

You have put me through the wringer with this book. I cried, I laughed, I felt embarrassed. I smiled and bit my lip and covered my mouth with shocked delight.

This book is amazing. I felt so connected to Freya and Jeremy. They both had elements of who I am. Freya especially, as a fellow Scorpio… The shit she pulled with hiding her feelings and burying everything she feels deep down? Been there, done that. Jeremy and his “everything is fine … nothing is wrong … I’ll do everything I can to fit in”. OMG did I feel that to my core.

And the sex!! Chapter 30 y’all!! Read it!

I literally have nothing bad to say about this book. Well done-I can’t wait to read more from you down the road!

War On Christmas (ARC)

3⭐️

Pub date: 11/7/2023

Freya just wants to spend her Christmas alone in Chicago. But instead, she has to return to her hometown where she's always been the black sheep. What's worse is that she has to hitch a ride with her best friend- turned- enemy Jeremy. This sparky reunion turned into a bet: Freya's goal is to seduce Jeremy for a fun filled holiday and nothing more. Jeremy wants more than that though. 17 years of pride and distance seems so hard to breech. Who will win and what will they risk for it?

Read if you like: friends to enemies to lovers, slow burn, bets, family reunions, role playing.

The bitterness for Christmas is already so prominent in the prologue. I mean, I should've expected it from the title but the writing definitely conveyed the emotion well at the start. This book is such a slow burn. They're both obviously playing games. There's plenty of teasing and spice in this but it got repetitive and old after the 3rd time. It's not a straight up enemies to lovers. It's more so friends to semilovers to enemies to one night stand to enemies to lovers. 🤣 It's interesting enough to keep reading for sure but I found myself skimming a lot. The plot really has good potential but it became so discouraging after the FMC goes back and forth with her feelings so much. The pledging of love at the end is a summary of their whole love story. It's cute probably in real life but in a book, not so much. I really don't want a summary of what I just read and what I already know.

Overall, I'm very neutral about this book.

Thank you author Elle Campbell and The BookFunnel for this free e-copy in exchange for an honest review.

Fabulous

What a great book! The writing is superb - funny, tender, sweet, sexy - just a joy to read. I’ve read a few good books lately, but this went above and beyond “good”. And the spicy parts were perfect in all the ways. Can’t wait to read the bonus material, and more from this author. Highly recommended.

A wonderful story full of Christmas and spice! Freya and Jeremy are both adorable and infuriating and their chemistry is off the charts. They made me want to flip page after page to find out what happens next. The secondary characters are also interesting and with depth. I hope we get a few spin-off books.
I only gave it 4⭐ because I wish it was longer.

This was an enjoyable enemies to lovers/ second chance romance. I always love when 1 of the MC don't even realize that they're an "enemy". Both main characters are delightful, with sh!t to work through, but not obnoxiously. The plot is well written and so is the SPICE. The side characters are also worth noting and do add to the story. I love how they bond and I'm always for a HEA. Definitely worth the read and I very much look forward to reading more from this author. I don't give 5 stars lightly. I've read some absolute trash, this is fantastic.

this book exceeded all my expectations. if you want a not so typical christmas book with actual laugh out loud moments, witchy vibes, family bonding, and smutty true love, this is the book for you.

i found myself not being able to put this book down (& i mean it honestly) there was such clear communication in the book, the author’s writing was mature and captivating from the first page, and the characters were just so fun and humorous. i have no bad things to say about this book. it’s a definite must read for the holidays.

coming to you november 7th!! 💚

4.5 ⭐️ rounded up. Okay, I devoured this book like I’ve never devoured a romance before.

This book follows Jeremy and Freya. They were childhood best friends and neighbors. In high school, they grew apart and became rivals so when they moved on to college and adult life, the became estranged. Present day, a death is bringing Jeremy home for the first time in 17 years; Freya is also going home for the first time in 4 years due to her family’s insistence. The return home is rough for them both and they end up leaning on each other as friends with benefits…or maybe more?

I am not someone who loves tons of spicy scenes in my books, but the spicy scenes in this book were done tastefully and they made sense. They weren’t just sprinkled in at random like some books do just so they can say they’re spicy

I fell in love with Freya’s smart mouth and bluntness and witchy vibes. I couldn’t tell if I wanted to be her, or be with her.😅 Jeremy is so sweet and charming and just the perfect man, so obviously I fell in love with him too. I related with both of these characters as a fellow black sheep and someone with a not so good family life.

I loved the little game they were playing and I commend Jeremy for trying so hard for so long to develop a friendship with Freya again while Freya tries all her tricks and skills to seduce him. I love that there was no awkwardness with them through the whole thing because of how good of a relationship they used to have.

Now don’t be fooled. This isn’t just a romance book. This book will also break your heart. There was a couple times where I was crying my eyes out with Jeremy and Freya as they faced their demons.

The ending of the book was so unbelievably cute and dorky I was blushing the whole time like it was happening to me!

Never before has a romance book made me so excited, so happy, and so dang sad in the span of 350 pages.

Buckle up, it’s going to be a bumpy ride.

First thought: A really fun, banter filled second chance romance that takes place in the two weeks leading up to Christmas. With dual POV and engaging characters this book takes you on an epic friends to enemies to lovers romance full of spice that is years in the making. Must add to your TBR!

Freya is a fierce, doesn’t stand down, takes what she wants, crystal and tarot card loving witchy gal. She has always been the black sheep of her family and has learned to just embrace who she is. She loves the life she has built in Chicago and hasn’t looked back since she left for college.

Jeremy is a practical guy, he pursued architecture and has built a life that is safe and stable. He was kicked out of his home after high school and hasn’t been in touch with his mom since. He had a rough upbringing thanks to his verbally abusive step dad. His only escape was his best friend next store and his twin sister. But things went wrong with Freya before hs as friendship turned into feelings and after sharing a night of making out they became enemies/rivals for the next four years. After hs they parted ways never to speak again.

Now 17 years later these two collide again as they head home for Christmas. Will this forced proximity end in war, friendship or cross the line into something else. With only 2 weeks till Christmas they will have to figure it out.

Tropes you’ll find:

* Friends to Enemies to Lovers
* Reverse Grumpy / Sunshine
* Soul Mates
* Forced Proximity
* Second Chance
* Witchy FMC
* Spice 🔥

What a delightful read "War on Christmas" by Elle Campbell turned out to be!

I absolutely adored the dynamic between Freya and Jeremy. Their banter and back-and-forth had me hooked from the very beginning, and I found myself rooting for them throughout the story.

The little dashes of tarot and witchiness that were sprinkled into the narrative added a touch of enchantment to the story.

What truly set this book apart was that it wasn't just a romance; it dove deep into the complexities of family relationships and the process of healing and reconciliation. The focus on family members working through their issues was both heartwarming and thought-provoking.

Watching Freya's personal growth and transformation throughout the story was incredibly satisfying. Her journey added depth and authenticity to the narrative.

And that 3rd act breakup-ish.I loved how Elle Campbell put a unique spin on it and it wasn’t your typical misunderstanding. She skillfully navigated the story's conclusion, leaving readers like me thoroughly satisfied. Plus, the bonus epilogue was great! I was wondering what Jeremy’s reaction would be.

Overall, "War on Christmas" is a beautifully balanced book that weaves together romance, family, and personal growth. Highly recommended!

4.5/5

my second christmas book this year and they’re getting better each time. This is not only an enemies to lovers trope, but also a grumpy x sunshine and SHE’S the grumpy one. As both of them fight their own demons when coming back home, they find comfort, peace and a different kind of home in each other.

Freya was such an interesting FMC. I feel like she’s one of the most unique FMCs I’ve met in a long time and with her confidence and always being unapologetically herself I fell head over heels for her. She likes Tarots, dark humor and is a professional hiding my feelings girl. Jeremy, cinnamon role that he is was, well, perfect for her. The light to her darkness, the angel to her demons and the one who loves her not despite her flaws but because of them. Together, they made such a perfect team, and I couldn’t help but root for them. I loved their banter, their insiders, their chemistry and their “It’s always been you.”

The christmas vibes were great and in combination with the many adorable side characters, created a cozy and cute atmosphere. I’m giving it a 4/5 on my RFC (ridiculously fluffy christmas) scale. Absolutely recommend.

I recently finished what might just be the cutest holiday rom-com I've had the pleasure of reading in quite some time. The characters' relationships were portrayed with such depth and nuance that it made the story feel exceptionally genuine and relatable.

Freya touched my heart with her deeply relatable emotional fears. The way she built walls to protect herself and the way she remained firm in herself made me want to cry. She felt familiar - a carefully placed facade to deflect from the fear of being hurt. She felt like a friend that I wanted to shake to help wake her up! Hahaha! And that last 10% of the book? It was nothing short of the sweetest ever!! It left me with a heartwarming feeling that made me feel so giddy 🥰

What I found especially captivating about this book was the way it tackled the complexity of familial relationships. It added a depth to the story and helped solidify (and repair) Freya’s insecurities. But, of course, the icing on the cake was Jeremy’s fierce commitment and unwavering pursuit, which was utterly swoon-worthy!! He is the epitome of what you hope to find in a man - sure, steadfast and strong. His kind heart and unfortunate past were such great points that lent to the building of his character. I felt for him, cried for him and laughed with him. I wanted to hug him and protect him for all he went through.

This book was a fantastic read in every sense, and I would wholeheartedly recommend it to anyone in search of a heartwarming, spicy, and beautifully written rom-com. It was a delightful experience from start to finish!

Perfect grumpy/sunshine, friends to enemies to lovers, second chance holiday romance.

Jeremy (MMC): sunshiney people pleaser, pursued practically, charming and kind-hearted

Freya (FMC): black cat energy, strong and sassy independent, witchy tarot card vibes, secret burlesque dancer, "sunshine"

Rating: 🐈‍⬛🐈‍⬛🐈‍⬛🐈‍⬛(3.75⭐️rounded to 4)
Spice: 🌶️🌶️ (dirty talk, spanking, 👅)
T/W: death of a parent (referenced), parent verbal abuse (referenced in past), bullying (referenced in past)

A delightful holiday read filled with swoon, spice and heart. I struggled to understand Freya but by the end I just wanted to be her best friend. Jeremy was the perfect book boyfriend. He was swoon worthy and stead fast in his pursuit of Freya. He must be protected at all costs.

“You were never going to settle for a nice, quiet love story, now were you?”

I’m going to start this review by saying 2 things.First, this was my first christmasy book I ever read (I know, let’s very quietly move on 👀).

Second, how beautiful was this story? And the cover?Just look at it 😍

Now the review ☺️

This is a friends to enemies to lovers. Freya and Jeremy use to be best friends until they were 14 years old,and a certain event makes them into rivals.Up until they meet again and sparks start to sparkle between them 😏

Freya is such an authentic character. She is strong minded, she feels her emotions fiercely and she is purely herself, which Jeremy simply loves about her. Even though he was going through some hard stuff, when it came to Freya,Jeremy was an absolute darling.

This book has everything! And I mean EVERYTHING 😏 This will definitely be a re-read for me.

Well done @authorellecampbell ♥️ I look forward to more of your books 🤗

Freya and Jeremy

I'm not typically comfortable reading a story with a sort-of [?] witch as a character, let alone a main character. With that being said, I fell in love with Freya. I felt a strong connection with her different-ness and feeling far to the left in many situations. I especially love how Jeremy lives her for who she is, so much so that he doesn't want her to pretend to be someone she's not; he wants her to be fully herself. That's precious and well worth holding onto. The mended family wounds add a depth to Jeremy and Freya's story that made this reader weep with joy.

A huge congratulations for a wonderful debut!

I absolutely LOVED Freya and Jeremey. I cracked up more times than I can count! They had so much energy between them and I was rooting for them from the get-go. The banter was so fun and it got STEAMY! Not only was the relationship arc wonderful, but I also I felt that both characters underwent a deeply moving character arc. I even got teary toward the end! It was very "in the spirit" to watch their families unite after so many years, and I just loved all the family members and how they interacted.

I HIGHLY recommend this Christmas novel for anyone who loves strong women, a dash of magic, real talk, family fun and a hot, steamy couple!

Such a fun read! I loved that the characters weren’t constantly self-deprecating. They both knew what they wanted and where they stood and weren’t afraid to tell the other.

This is much lighter than my normal reads, but I loved that it wasn’t the typical whiny, dramatic romance. It felt much more raw and real than anything I’ve read.

And it had just the right, realistic balance of dorky/nerdy. Without trying to spoil anything, I’ll say that the nerdy finally was perfectly balanced for those that swing into fantasy worlds and those (like myself) that do not. It wasn’t over the top but it was so perfect for Jeremy and Freya.

I highly recommend this one and enjoyed getting an ARC of this book!

Honest ARC Review.

I absolutely adored this book. I can't count how many times I died laughing, and my husband kept asking me what Freya said now. Her character was depicted perfectly. I fell in love with both Jeremy and Freya, as well as their families, which is rare in these books.

As a fellow nerd, I do appreciate the nerdiness of it. I have a tendency to fall head over heels for geeks, so a freaky witch FMC and a sexy nerd MMC really struck home.

I love everything about this book. Of course, there were a few typos, but you can expect that with an ARC. Elle Campell definitely has a way with storytelling. For the first time, I'm giving an ARC 5 stars.

10/10 recommend.

This was sooo enjoyable. The banter made me blush and gave me countless giggles. Freyas character reminded me of myself, which was comforting. Also getting called out along side her was funny. I loved how the family came together for the holiday like they never left. It reminded me of my own. Children running around, sibling arguments and everything in between lol. The internal dialogue in the beginning of the story was really hard for me to focus on, but past a certain point, I didn’t notice it anymore.

Truthfully, this was such a fun read. Jeremy and Freya were such a joy to read about. This was so much more than ex-friends to friends to lovers. This was about them also realizing that people can change, second chances are possible and past beliefs aren't always going to be true forever. I truly just wanted to give both of them the biggest hugs, especially their younger high school selves. I'm so happy with ending and this definitely won't be my last book from Elle Campbell.

Freya and Jeremy started out as good friends. That grew into best friends and then confidantes. Then, after their kiss, they became arch nemesis. After high school, they went no contact until Jeremy's step-dad passed away, and she needed a ride back home for Christmas. Freya thought that they hated each other, and it's always been her for Jeremy. Can they regain their friendship or maybe something more?
This is such a great Christmas, second chance romance. Full of laughs and tears.
