Reading this book makes me sad, although written in 1982, it is still relevant until now. It seems that history always repeats himself, the same actor, the same conflict, the same decision that made. The key message that I read from this book is any Indonesia need to read more, study more. The political and economic instability during the 1950s and 1960s can be summarized that we did not use the proper theory to solve the problem. Let say there is not enough scientific proper measurable method in making the decision, everything seems like in hurry. It is a tragic story that Olle Törnquist mention three mistakes which are 1) Anti imperialism against the wrong kind of capitalism 2) Peasants struggle against the wrong monopoly of land 3) Mass struggle bypassed elite conflict and massacre

Five star for many reasons: 1) this book is free, can be read online 2) its written in 1982 for his thesis and still writing until now, I will continue read another book of him 3) clear and beautifully written 4) help many Indonesian to learn about their self and the history.

Poses a lot of good questions about the problematique of anti-imperialism (the viability of Comintern formulations on national liberation struggles, etc.). But much of its prognosis are dated or plain trash (ex., the fact of its stability and survival makes peripheral state domestic capitalist rather than foreign-backed comprador; divorcing of anti-fascist struggles from anti-imperialist and anti-feudal struggles; etc.).

Mengapa Aidit harus memberontak??

1. Kapitalisme Indonesia tidak bergerak seperti kapitalisme di tempat doktrin komunis dikembangkan.

2. Kemacetan upaya aksi massa sehingga revolusi harus digeser ke level elite.

3. Kegagalan Buruh dan Tani sebagai massa utama komunis untuk menjadi proletariat alat revolusi akibat gagalnya pengambilalihan perusahaan dan faktor struktur masyarakat feodal Indonesia yg terbentuk secara vertikal.

"PKI tidak terlibat dalam perjuangan senjata, melainkan berjuang dgn cara damai dan demokratis."

Tapi sayangnya, strategi dan analisis PKI begitu lemah. Apalagi ada campur tangan aksi dan fitnah-fitnah yg dibuat Suharto org si paling Baper.
