How to Get Caught Under the Mistletoe: A Lady's Guide

Rate this book

When plotting mistletoe mischief, always check for lurking gentlemen—especially the tall, dark, and brooding kind.

It was supposed to be a simple holiday mission: whisk away heartbroken Jane and ailing Charlotte to London's glittering festivities for some much-needed Christmas cheer. But as I, Elizabeth Bennet, quickly learned, nothing's ever simple when a certain gentleman is involved.

For starters, there is Mr. Darcy, always appearing at the most inopportune moments—like under the very mistletoe branch I had my sights on! Between plum pudding, party mishaps, and an uncanny ability to be exactly where I don't want him, Mr. Darcy might just be the biggest holiday hurdle. It is just my luck that he happens to be a dazzling kisser.

Will we find joy, love, and a few stolen kisses amidst the yuletide chaos? Or will I have to pen another guide titled, 'How to Keep Stubborn Gentlemen From Stealing Your Heart'?

Delightful story where friendship and romance receive equal attention.

In the aftermath of the Netherfield ball, Jane is thrown into despair when she receives Miss Bingley's note announcing the group's departure and hinting at Mr. Bingley's serious interest in Georgiana Darcy. Meanwhile, when she isn't bemoaning Mr. Bingley's abandonment of Jane, Mrs. Bennet badgers Elizabeth for refusing Mr. Collins's marriage proposal.

Not long after, Elizabeth notices that Charlotte just doesn't look well and tires easily. When pressed, Charlotte admits she IS quite ill and has seen Mr. Jones, the local apothecary, who believes she has a wasting disease. Her own family is unaware of her condition. With the Christmas season approaching, she wishes that just once a gentleman would notice her and that she would be kissed under the mistletoe.

Mr. Gardiner has acquired a new business partner, a wealthy young bachelor with connections among high society. Recognizing the excellent opportunity for his eldest nieces, Mr. Gardiner invites Jane and Elizabeth to visit and join them at Yuletide events they will be attending thanks to Mr. Van der Meer.

Along with getting away from her melodramatic mother, Elizabeth sees dual potential in the invitation: Jane might be lifted from her doldrums over Mr. Bingley, and their ailing friend might have her wish fulfilled. At her request, the Gardiners amend their invitation to include Charlotte, and the three young ladies head off to London, where the rest of the book takes place.

The various dinner parties, dances, and balls all have seasonal decorations, and Elizabeth loyally spends most of her time trying to steer likely-looking gentlemen toward Charlotte and into the correct position under the mistletoe. Mr. Van der Meer is a genial, outgoing man very much in the mold of Mr. Bingley; it's not so surprising that the two are good friends or that Mr. Darcy attends many of the same social gatherings.

The entire story is told from Elizabeth's point of view. It's filled with spirited banter between her and Mr. Darcy, slowly turning up the heat between the pair until it positively sizzles. The sweet relationship that Lizzy, Charlotte, and Jane share is heartwarming.

As with all of Alix James's novels, this is beautifully written and thoroughly engages the reader. Content is clean.

I received a free copy of this book from the author and am voluntarily leaving a review. Opinions are my own.

A charming Christmas romp

After disappointments and sad news in Meryton, Elizabeth, Jane and Charlotte make their way to London for the season.
Determined to bring cheer to themselves and maybe even future happiness, Elizabeth is on a mission.

Thrown into the company of new and former gentlemen acquaintances, the young ladies ride the emotional waves of both highs and lows.

It was for the most part a fun read, with some poignant scenes peppered along the way.

Aside from a lot of burning, black eyes from Darcy towards Elizabeth, we don't get more than a small amount of clear flirting and intentions from him.

I would have appreciated far more real interaction between the lovable couple. Instead there was a lot of Elizabeth's musings about her confused feelings and physical sensations. For me, that got old and boring.

Do you know the difference between friendship and love? Friendship is the photograph. Love the oil painting. ~ Frank Delaney

What an enjoyable book about friendship and love!

The story begins when the Netherfield party has deserted Meryton and returned to London.

Elizabeth Bennet visits her closest friend, Charlotte Lucas, and discovers her still in bed, suffering. Charlotte has consulted the local apothecary and learned she has a wasting disease and not long to live. Charlotte grieves for the experiences she will never have in life, including a romantic kiss under the mistletoe. Elizabeth is determined to aid Charlotte in her quest.

The oldest Bennet sisters have been invited to visit their Gardiner Aunt and Uncle. Elizabeth petitions for an additional invitation for Charlotte. The three women will spend the Christmas season in London.

While Elizabeth scouts for mistletoe locations for Charlotte, she is being scouted in her turn.

“I did wish for a bit of romance, though. Just a taste.” (quote from the book)

After the Netherfield ball, nothing goes right. Jane is heartbroken, Mr. Collins proposes and proposes and proposes, and Charlotte is wasting away! What’s a girl to do but accept the invitation from her aunt and uncle in Cheapside and try to bring some final cheer to Charlotte and distract Jane from her heartache.

“Because having Mr. Darcy under foot made the rest of my designs downright ticklish.” (quote from the book)

This was a delightful Christmas tale that has Elizabeth on a mission to ensure Charlotte experiences a kiss under the mistletoe while attending events in London with the Gardiners. But despite all her attempts, not all goes as planned. Mr. Darcy has the uncanny ability to show up when least expected causing all sorts of feelings to arise within Elizabeth.

So, join the festivities with Elizabeth, Jane, Charlotte, the Gardiners, and some very endearing men. You won’t be disappointed!

I was fortunate to receive this book as a gift, and I am voluntarily leaving my review.

“Lizzy! Such cynicism.” Quote from the book [Jane to Elizabeth]

This was not my favorite by this author. I was having a hard time connecting with the characterization of Elizabeth. Perhaps it was my mood. Or, it was Elizabeth’s concern for her best friend that changed her character and perspective during the Holiday Season. While she and Mr. Darcy did a merry side-step in avoiding the mistletoe, Elizabeth was trying to position suitors for Charlotte to no avail. That was funny in a macabre sort of way. Poor Charlotte. The Masque Ball at the end was my favorite part. This ended at 89% on my reading device and was followed by author information and an excerpt from Mr. Darcy and the Governess. That was a fun book.

After the Netherfield ball it is decided that Jane and Elizabeth are to spend a season in town, staying by uncle and aunt Gardiener. They are accompanied by Elizabeth's friend Charlotte. Charlotte struggles with health issues and Elizabeth hopes that a season in town will help her friend and bring her some romantic moments like kisses under the mistletoe. And there is also still the romance between Jane and Bingley to consider. Elizabeth is arranging everything when a brooding gentleman from Derbyshire also shows up at all events that Elizabeth attends. And he does not only disturb her plans, he also leaves her in total confusion about the state of her own heart.
Will Elizabeth be able to arrange some romantic moments for her sister and her friend without missing her own opportunity for happiness? And what about Darcy? Is he willing to admit his growing feelings for the scheming Miss Elizabeth from Hertfordshire?

Alix James' first Christmas story is a delight and left me with a warm feeling and much Christmas cheer.

The story is written from Elizabeth's point of view and contains many witty remarks from the impertinent Miss from Hertfordshire. There are many laugh out loud moments in it. This way of narrating gives us also the opportunity to partake in Elizabeth feelings and thoughts about the different situations she experiences. Especially when it comes to the encounters with Darcy we as readers are able to experience with her the feelings of falling in love and we also discover with her the true character of the gentleman.

I really like that the story takes place very soon after the Netherfield ball the places where all things happen is London. Bingley's party and the Bennet girls are not very long separated. Misunderstandings and resentments have not much time to develop. And the Bennet sisters going to London means that there are no interruptions or mortifications from the family (they are still at Longbourn) , which makes it easier, especially for Elizabeth.

There are some misunderstandings between Darcy and Elizabeth. But to encounter each other so often in company they are quick to resolve them and shyly begin something like friendship which soon becomes more. I like that Elizabeth is able to discover other sides of Darcy, that he is kind and generous and cares for his friends and relatives. I especially like that she is able to observe him with his sister and discover the loving brother.

I also like the relationship between Darcy and Elizabeth. Darcy flirts with Elizabeth and Elizabeth admires him ever so much. The attraction between the two is palpable. This leads to lovely scenes between the two for example at the New year's celebrations.

The friendship between Elizabeth and Charlotte was al
so something I really liked in that book. Elizabeth would do nearly everything to see her friend happy. That is also something Elizabeth and Darcy have in common: they would do everything for their friends and their family.

If you like Darcy and Elizabeth getting to know each other better and discovering love around Christmas you should definitely read this lovely book.

I highly recommend it.

Wonderful

The story begins after the Netherfield ball, and after the Bingleys and Darcy abandon Netherfield for London, breaking Jane's heart. The Gardiners invite Jane and Elizabeth to visit them in London for the festive season, and Charlotte Lucas goes with them. Uncle Gardiner has a new business associate who is young, handsome, rich, and single, Mr Van Der Meer. They see him often at the numerous parties and balls that they attend, and they also see Darcy and Bingley at these functions. Elizabeth meets Georgiana Darcy at a bookshop, and they hit it off immediately. Elizabeth still dislikes Darcy, and Darcy is unable to fight his attraction to Elizabeth any longer. Elizabeth goes through a period of discovery about Darcy's character during their many encounters.

This is a sweet, light, and fluffy romantic story. This is a swoon worthy Darcy, and a charming Georgiana. The humor is nice, and the witty banter is superb. Charlotte is given quite an important role, as she's been told that she doesn't have long to live, and her trip with her best friends is a kind of last fling before her illness takes her. Because this is a romantic story, something will happen to improve that situation.

I deducted a star because I felt that Elizabeth's character was too cheeky, overbearing, and obstinate. Her refusal to acknowledge that Darcy might possibly be a good person became annoying after the first several times that he clearly proved that he was kind and caring. It was a relief when she finally came around. The book is very well written and well edited. I recommend it highly for an amusing way to pass some time.

An adorable Christmas story full of humor and the sadness of a possible imminent loss.

The story revolves around an invitation for Lizzy and Jane to spend the Christmas holidays with the Gardeners. Their new business associate is a handsome wealthy young man who would be perfect for one of their nieces!

Especially since Mrs Bennet is furious with Elizabeth for refusing Mr Collins proposal.

So Lizzy and Jane accept thrilled to be able to get away and spend an exciting time in town !

The only problem for Elizabeth is that her best friend Charlotte seems to be not herself. Pale and breathless when Elizabeth finds her in bed after not seeing her for many days.

She confesses to Lizzy that Mr Jones told her she has a wasting disease that will soon take her life!
Her family do not know and she swears Elizabeth to silence!

Charlotte regrets many of the experiences that she will never know, love, marriage, children but her biggest regret is never having had her first kiss!

So Elizabeth decides to invite her to go with them to town
where possibly she might experience a kiss under the mistletoe!

At every ball and outing Lizzy does her best to lead Charlotte under the romantic berries but most of her efforts fail.

In the meantime there are lots of sightings of a handsome Mr Darcy who tries and flirts adorably to get Elizabeth’s attention!

All’s well that ends well except the ending is missing the night after the 12th Night ball. The ending seemed rushed:(. But the story is enjoyable!”

This has truly been a giving season in the world of new holiday themed Austenesque stories! One of the pre-orders I had been really looking forward to is Alix James's mistletoe filled novella, How to Get Caught Under the Mistletoe. James brings all of our favorite Pride and Prejudice characters to life in a totally new seasonal story along with a few new personalities that help round out this very entertaining tale.

Shortly after the disastrous Netherfield ball, Elizabeth and Jane find themselves invited to London to spend the holiday season with the Gardiners. Noting that her close friend Charlotte Lucas seems out of sorts, Elizabeth soon learns some shocking news that makes her determined to help Charlotte have a holiday filled with joy, mischief and a little romance. Surely the balls and parties of London promise many a secret corner where a young lady can steal a Christmas kiss under a bough of mistletoe!

While out enjoying the the sites and shopping of the London markets, Elizabeth meets a shy woman whose literary tastes she appreciates. Much to her surprise, Elizabeth soon learns this lady is none other than Miss Georgiana Darcy as she comes face to face with the young lady's brooding, prideful and handsome brother himself.

As Elizabeth, Jane and Charlotte make the rounds in London, Elizabeth is almost singularly focused on helping Charlotte find a gentleman who who is mistletoe worthy. In the interim, Bingley has become aware of Jane's being in London and is determined not to pass up the opportunity to capture the heart of the eldest Bennet sister. However, Elizabeth's not so subtle mission becomes apparent to one, Mr. Darcy, who slowly works to uncover the truth behind Elizabeth's actions while working to dispel her poor opinion of him.

As the season continues, Elizabeth finds herself worrying not only that this trip to London was the last thing that Charlotte needed but that she will fail her friend in finding a chance to enjoy a taste of romance. Of course, while Elizabeth is so focused on everyone else's romantic lives, she fails to notice how Darcy is slowly working his way into her heart. I loved how James chose to demonstrate Darcy's honorable and giving nature through the selfless support he provides to Charlotte. It just melted my heart as only Darcy can.

James has a wonderful way of bringing humor and sweetness to all of her Pride and Prejudice variations and her latest holiday novella is no exception. This is definitely a unique story that while quite different than the original classic, still feels true to the core of who each of these characters is. James does a wonderful job of showcasing the beautiful bonds of friendship between Jane, Elizabeth and Charlotte. This novella leaves you with all of the warm and hopeful feelings that you want headed into the holiday season. Definitely go give it a read!

I loved it!

It was so enticing that I couldn’t put it down, this book grabbed my interest from the very first page. I couldn’t put it down, I had to know what happened next. The story is well written with a very good storyline. You will see the most beloved characters in a whole new way. This is a Jane Austen's Pride and Prejudice variation. This story is a festive frolic where hearts, hopes, and mistletoe hang in the balance. The Centerpiece or An Emotionally Laid Table
I got a copy in advance – thank you, Alix - and soon a picture popped up in my head and only grew in rich complexity. And as I would like to publish a review, you will have to share it with me:
A centerpiece is for the senses, usually for the eyes and they grace a table for special occasions like Christmas. They are in the center of a beautifully laid table with delicious food to come.
In this novel Charlotte Lucas is the centerpiece and – of course – Elizabeth and Darcy are sitting around the table and with each serving of the excellent food their relationship is deepening, essentially also because of the centerpiece. But even centerpieces can move to the diners around the table and enjoy the company.
You probably think my picture rather odd and so I encourage you to read the book and see what picture will pop up in your head.

What a fun story! It's set after Bingley decamped from Netherfield.
Charlotte Lucas is ailing and joins Elizabeth and Jane in London for what could possibly be the last holiday season of her life. She wants to experience a hint of a romance and get caught under the mistletoe with a gentleman for once in her life. They come across Darcy et al in London, and Elizabeth has to revise some of her opinions about a certain gentleman of her acquaintance.

It's written in Elizabeth's first person perspective.

Steam level: Thinking about kissing, more than actual kissing.

Caught by the Mistletoe

What a lovely novella about mistletoe and our dear couples. This story changes the circumstances of Jane, Elizabeth, and Charlotte. There is a new character who is swoonworthy.

One couple will need a tad bit of help to be caught by and under the mistletoe. How do our ladies find their happily ever after? You will need to read to find out.

This can be read in an afternoon with a cup of tea.

A lovely Christmas romp

Alix James has the gift. She creates a world full of believable characters, who speak both wit and foolishness with humour. Yet there is also depth of feeling, and some real fears for one character that remind us how fortunate most of us are to live in a world with modern medicine. And there’s an abundance of HEAs.

Got a bit repetitive for such a short book, but I still liked it. Pretty much anything that is a different spin on pride and prejudice I will love. This isn't any different. I wish there had been more of Darcy and Elizabeth's romance, not just her confused musings, but still loved the story

4.5 rounded up to 5 stars

I have to say that my favorite thread of this story is Elizabeth's efforts to ensure that her dear friend, Charlotte Lucas, is kissed before she dies. Yes, Charlotte is deathly sick and the apothecary in Hertfordshire gives her no hope. So, to London they go.

Things do change. Darcy brings his physician to see Charlotte. However, trying to maneuver a man under the mistletoe at the same time Charlotte happens there is a difficult task. (Caroline Bingley makes sure to take down all the mistletoe in the Bingley house...except that outside the front door. Not that that is when Charlotte is kissed.)

We have shopping both at Hatchard's Book Store and with a modiste recommended by Aunt Gardiner.

We have a new male character, a Henry Van der Meer.

This story is one of three. The other two being: The Scotsman's Ghost: or How to Wreck a Yule Party: A Pride & Prejudice Christmas VariationMr. Darcy's Christmas Kiss: A Pride & Prejudice Christmas Variation. This is an author whose books I borrow as soon as I read that she has published another. She writes under two names.

I recommend this story as well as her other stories.

I loved this funny and charming story <3

Lizzie is playing matchmaker for Jane and Charlotte in London, and Darcy keeps get in the way. He is almost everywhere they go, luckily most often in company with Mr Bingley and the original character Mr Van der Meer. The latter a very wealthy also very handsome merchant and he is an acquaintance of both Mr Gardiner, Mr Bingley and Mr Darcy. There are shopping for new silk dresses, ice skating, Christmas shopping, sleigh rides, dinners, balls culminating in the 12th night masquerade ball.
This is a mostly lighthearted and funny story without much angst and more than one happy ending.
Lizzy is stubborn refusing to see what is right under her nose, and I found this Mr Darcy especially swoon worthy.
An extra epilogue is available for free.

I made the mistake starting this story on a weekday evening. So I stayed up way too late to finish the story in one sitting. This could very well be a story, that I will read again next Christmas. Hopefully by then it would be an audiobook as well.
