This is how I wanted this series to end. With just solid relationships, our tried-and-true familiar characters mixed in with some new and interesting ones, deep relationships, HOTNESS, and all around good times.
I think I read that this is the end of the series and it's been a good run with Jack & Riley. I didn't love each book, but I did love the series as a whole and these guys feel like family. It was a great way to finish it all and tie up all the ends.
The Liam/Marcus storyline, originally introduced in Texas Family, continues on in this book and it's a heartbreaking and then uplifting doozy. I really enjoyed this couple's friendship, courtship, healing, and growth. Getting to know Liam and his past was sad, scary, and I found myself rooting for him to be...ok...and happy in the end.
Add in some more Robbie & Eli parts (yay!), and a lot of Jack & Riley parts (double yay!), bits and pieces of the Campbell-Hayes family (awww...Max!) and only 2-3 "het boy" references, and I was really really enjoying myself!
Good times.
Note: I struggled with some of the editing - my pet peeve is when editors don't catch when the author mistakenly mixes up character names...and that happened on more than one occasion in this book. Please, please, be more alert and careful with this kind of stuff. Spelling errors, fine. Grammatical errors, ok. But mixing up characters' names makes the story confusing and throws the reader off BIG TIME. :(
Even though this was titled as a Christmas tale, most of the story took place before, so it can be enjoyed any time. It was really nice to revisit the ever growing Campbell-Hayes family. Watching the established couples' relationships evolve and a new one form, whose participants want their own to like what they see daily with the married men. This is a hard story to tell because of the painful and often undiscussed topic of male sexual assault. The feelings and behaviors of the victim as well as those who want to help but have to tread lightly. How can you start a relationship, even accept a date invite if you've never dealt with a past that keeps you from getting on with your future? Very patient friends and a special man. There are several interwoven stories: why is there a need to get a nanny? Will the courts ever allow them to adopt a young autistic child? What the completion of the renovations mean for everyone. How do you let go of or get around someone's very stubborn pride? There are some very common themes throughout all of the story friendship, love, trust, honesty, learning to accept help from others, barn is an important place for everyone, and the importance of co parenting for two wonderful gay dads.
Texas Christmas sees us back on the Double D horse ranch where things are going well for the Campbell-Hayes’ and their dearest friends and family.
Riley and Jack finally have the little family unit they’ve dreamed of having for years, which is only made more perfect when the adoption of little Max is finally approved.
Robbie and Eli are also going strong, eagerly anticipating the completion of their new house, which is being built for them on Double D land thanks to Jack and Riley’s generosity and best wishes.
Meanwhile, the Double D has a new official member in the form of twenty year old Liam, who was introduced in the last book as a young abuse survivor hired on at the ranch by Jack to work with Robbie and the horses.
Liam has had a harrowing past few years, first being kicked out of home at age sixteen for being gay, and then suffering mentally scarring physical and sexual abuse at the hands of a former ranch employer. He’s determined to put the past in the past and move on with his life, but he finds it difficult to move forward when very real threats from his past still linger.
Thankfully, Liam finds comfort and endless support from the other men at the Double D, but also in the form of Marcus – the surrogate facilitator from book four – who shows no shame in expressing his keen interest in getting to know Liam better.
This addition to the Texas series was a special one for me. My heart broke for dear Liam, whose story proved to be my favourite aspect of this particular book. I also can’t get enough of gorgeous little Max. This kid is simply one of the best book kids I’ve ever had the pleasure of reading about. Much like Riley and Jack, I’ve found myself with a Max-shaped hole in my heart. To top it all off, my love for Riley and Jack continues to grow as the series progresses; they've definitely cemented themselves as one of my top M/M couples out there.
Ultimately, this was another great installment in an enjoyable series about a group of cowboys and the people who are precious to them.
Another great update into the ever growing family built by Jack and Riley. It seems like just yesterday when these two hated each other, but times have changed. I just love reading about their lives.
I really enjoyed reading about Marcus and Liam as well as Robbie and Eli. They are all one big loving family that has overcome challenges and they deserve all of the happiness in the world. I love how Robbie took Liam under his wing, it was really sweet.
But like I wrote in one of my updates, there just has to be more! Besides, we need to find out how Riley likes his Christmas present ;)
*** This is a pre Christmas tale, as it all happens before that day ! Several things are happening. Jack and Riley (on the cover) are expanding their family, they need a nanny, their adoption is still pending for the little boy, Max, plus there is 12 yr. old Haley, and the new twins. Jack's sister, Beth is going to have a baby, Eli and Robbie are in their new apartment, and troubled Liam needs help. Liam, 20, is the sweet man who was repeatedly raped and beaten by Hank at the Bar Five Ranch. He is caring for the horses at Jack and Riley's. Marcus, 29, the Surrogacy specialist wants to get closer to Liam. He sees the hurt man and wants to help him, maybe love him. Liam turns him down every time he asks Liam to dinner, but finally says yes.
After a training session, a Bar Five worker attacks Liam with a beating and a knife. Marcus steps up and cares for him when he's let out of the hospital, and their romance is on.
Charges are brought and Liam's whole story is finally believed by law enforcement. There is a lot happening, but this tale wraps up some loose ends, and brings our men comfort they have never had before. ENJOY ! ========
This was a sweet, sentimental Christmas visit with Jack, Riley and their huge extended family at the Double D. Now the fathers of four children, Jack and Riley have pretty much taken over as the heads of their families. The Double D is a thriving success and well manned doing business all over Texas. Riley's oil exploration business is pretty much running itself which gives Riley time to work out of his home office. This story gives a fond look back over the years to when Jack and Riley married back in book one and gave a promising look forward into the future of the Campbell-Hayes clan. Filled with happy times and some hard ones also, this wonderfully written story should find a prominent spot on your Christmas reading list.
RJ Scott has taken the Campbell-Hayes saga and wrapped it in a glorious red Christmas ribbon which, when it unfolds, gifts us with a wonderful finale for the many memorable characters whose lives have intertwined with Jack and Riley in this series.
Three couple’s stories intertwine throughout this book – the story of Jack and Riley and their quest to become a family of six – from adopting Max, to parenting their new twins, hiring a nanny, and finishing the addition on their home. Eli and Robbie have more of a supporting cast role in this story but we have a chance to watch them move into their new home and reinforce their love and commitment to one another. The main storyline is about Liam and Marcus and Liam’s personal growth from his previous trauma. Over time, with slow and patient love and support, Marcus wins Liam’s affections and ultimately the two become fully committed, both physically and emotionally.
As the story opens, Jack and Riley are putting the finishing touches on their house renovations and still working on Max’s adoption, while the series of delays and setbacks caused by minor issues was maddening for them. They persist because Max, a sweet little autistic five year old who always carries around his Thomas the Tank Engine, has their hearts completely engaged. One sentence, while shopping for their perfect Christmas tree, really struck me as so sweet and perfect for the Christmas memory bank: Riley noticed Max was singing a Christmas tune under his breath and Riley noted that, “Max had a cute little voice to go along with his cute little heart.”
Liam’s story is the main focus in this book as he is pursued with a single-minded focus by Marcus who continually presses him for a dinner date. When Jack receives a call from the owner telling him that he’s hired a thief, he confronts Liam about why he left that ranch so suddenly. The emotional overload of being a disappointment to a man he respects and of losing the only place he feels safe, has Liam breaking down and telling both Jack and Robbie what really happened. This emotional dump opens the door to his healing process. He finally gives in to Marcus’ persistence and decides to go out to dinner with Marcus. At the end of that date, after allowing a few minutes for kisses that he fears will never be his on a long term basis, he tells Marcus the truth about his past. He figures that if Marcus doesn’t want him, it’s best to find out now, but Marcus doesn’t react the way Liam fears he will. Instead, Marcus is supportive and loving and committed to starting a relationship with him. I love Liam’s bravery and the strength of character he shows by struggling through this very difficult confession. I’m happy that the author later shows us Liam’s decision to seek psychological counseling and to consider contacting the police about the incidents on the Bar Five.
There’s more drama for both Jack and Riley and for Liam himself later in the story but both incidents serve to stress the importance of love and commitment and family support. Ms. Scott has left me feeling very emotionally fulfilled and very positive about the future for each of these couples and their extended family. Thank you and Merry Christmas to you too, RJ Scott.
I highly recommend this book to all who have read the Texas series and if you haven’t started it yet, don’t delay. Make it your #1 New Year’s Resolution!

The saga of the very unconventional Texas family continues – and it was good to see what was next for these guys. As always, in best soap-opera tradition, I felt as if I were coming home or at the very least visiting with close family. One that is constantly growing, and with the much-awaited addition of little five-year-old Max it seems as if there have been enough additions for now. Of course, there is the matter of a nanny for tiny twins Connor and Lexie, the fact that Riley's daughter Haley is undeniably growing up, and the many other family members I was happy to see again. And while Jack and Riley remain front and center in the relationship department, there was enough of Eli and Robbie to keep me happy, not to mention the newest couple, Marcus and Liam.
Riley, the oil-magnate into "green oil", and his husband Jack, a cowboy and ranch owner, are as much in love, and as hot together, as always. The addition of four children to their existence as a couple may hamper their bedroom activities a little, but they more than make up for it in the intensity of their encounters. And the way they deal with all the issues that crop up, including a threat from Liam's past, just makes me sigh with happiness. If only more couples were able to figure out how to deal with life's crises this well! Both of them focus on making Max, the newest member of their family, feel at home, and seeing the little borderline-autistic boy prosper was very rewarding indeed.
Eli and Robbie are dealing with life admirably well, and I liked how Robbie turned mentor and supporter for new ranch-hand and horse-whisperer Liam. The young man is shy and clearly has a horrible past, but the way Robbie includes him in everything and makes him feel safe goes a long way to making Liam feel at home. The budding romance between Marcus (the owner of the surrogacy company that Jack and Riley worked with to have the twins) was beautiful to watch. I had no idea Marcus could be that persistent, but it becomes clear that when he sees someone worth going after, there is no stopping him.
I had no chance to be bored – not that I expected it with these guys or their friends. The time leading up to Christmas, then the holiday itself, was beautiful, and I enjoyed every moment of the passion, adventure, and all the emotions unfolding before my eyes. If you like the Campbell-Hayes men and their clan and want to find out what's going on in their lives, if you enjoy romantic soap operas and heart-stopping drama, and if you're looking for a fun and emotional read with lots of heat between loving husbands who live in the heart of Texas, give this book a go. I'm already looking forward to the next installment!
NOTE: This book was provided by the author for the purpose of a review on Rainbow Book Reviews.
I can't imagine getting tired of reading about Jack and Riley, especially since they now have a family of their own. Hayley, Max, and the twins have made their life complete and there's no better time to reflect and appreciate everything you've been given than around the Christmas tree.
It was great to see Liam and Marcus develop their relationship and watch Liam begin to put the past behind him. Really enjoyed the whole story.
First let me start of with saying this is perhaps one of my favorite series ever. The characters are so well formed, so familiar, so human, and so natural. It is so easy to love them, to get into their heads and to relate to them and to me that makes this a special series.
This 5th book in the series, a special christmas edition, needs to be read when you have read the other books. It will not make any sense if you don’t know the characters from the earlier books.
They all make an appearance one way or another in this christmas edition, and we as the reader go through this story looking into the lives of the characters who formed this series.
We follow Jack and Riley in their life with their newborn twins, Riley’s 12 year old, Haley and their little boy Max.
At the same time we get to connect with Eli and Robbie and the wonderful life they’ve made together.
And also a new romance is formed in this new part. Liam finds love in Marcus, who we’ve also known from previous parts.
Liam needs to work through some heavy things that have happened to him in his young life as he is only 20. Thankfully Marcus doesn’t want to hear no and sticks around waiting patiently.
Miss Scott did an amazing job in building the story of Liam and Marcus, pushing it gently and carefully andthat really suits the story perfectly considering Liam’s past.
Together with the updates on the complete family and the little snippets of parents, brothers and sisters, it makes this part is a fantastic lovable all consuming read.
The minute I started reading, I felt drawn in, not wanting to do anything more than finish reading it and feeling so sad when I reached the end. I felt a bit worried that perhaps this is the final one? Or is there more to come? What about a spin off with Darren or example ? :)
I also want to take a moment to applaud the author for continuing this series, as it is not a standalone part but one where you need to have read the whole series. It often it seems a gamble to take that risk and unfortunately (in my opinion) it makes authors shy away and choose to do a part in a series that is more stand alone rather than continuing to work with the characters of the former parts of the series.
So a big compliment *taps head* to miss Scott for going that way and making this a very complete series. Thank you !
Overall 4th Re-Read Review 2018: I seriously have no idea what more I can say about Texas that I haven't already. This is the series that brought me into the world of published M/M genre so Jack & Riley Campbell-Hayes and the Double D universe will always hold a special place in my heart. No matter how many times I read this series, I always smile, cry, laugh, and just completely escape into their world. I may never experience that first time adrenaline rush but it still gets my blood pumping and heart racing. Texas is not just Jack and Riley's journey, yes they are the primary leads but we also get to see their children, their family, their friends all navigate life on and off the ranch. The Double D has a way of bringing people together, giving them hope and purpose, a fresh start, a place to grow and become who they are meant to be, but at the heart of each story is just that: heart. When RJ Scott wrote The Heart of Texas, I doubt she had any idea what she started, how far it would go or how many people it would touch but I'm just glad she gave life to Jack and Riley and everything that came from their love. This is one series that isn't getting old any time soon for me.
Audiobook Review December 2017: Frankly, I'm not sure what I can say that I haven't already said about Texas Christmas(and the whole Texas series) in my many re-reads. I will say that as much as I enjoy audiobooks, I rarely review them as I find myself zoning out getting distracted by what I'm doing, even when its a book that I absolutely adore so I end up having to listen to a book 2 or 3 times before I get everything. Now that has nothing to do with the story or the narrator, that's just how I'm wired.
As for the story, well as I said above there's nothing I could add here that would express my love for Jack and Riley Campbell-Hayes and the whole Double D universe more than I've already said in my many re-reads of the series. So I'll just say this: getting to see the boys, their family and friends at Christmas is just beautiful add in the newest members to the Double D, Liam and Marcus(because of his pursuit of Liam), is both heartbreaking and heartwarming.
As for the narration, well Sean Crisden's voice is perfect for the Double D universe. This is actually the first Texas book I've listened to but I have heard other books read by Sean and his voice is lovely to listen to and I just want to reiterate that my tendency to zone out is not down to him. Truth is I can't imagine anyone doing a better job at bringing life to Jack and Riley's journey.
3rd Overall Series Re-Read Review 2017: I've never really been much of a re-reader especially more than once and definitely not 2 summers in a row, so that should tell you something about how much I love this Texas series and the whole Campbell-Hayes Double D Universe. I don't think I'll ever get enough of these boys and their ever growing family and circle of friends.
2nd Re-Read 2016: Yet another one that is superb beyond imagine. Every one just meshes together so well and the addition of Liam and his relationship with Marcus adds perfectly to the Double D. Even though Marcus seems a little out of place on the ranch his feelings for Liam really help him begin to settle in too.
Original Review 2014: Another great entry in the tales of the Campbell-Hayes family, and yes, everyone who seems to come to the Double D works their way into the family network, blood or not. In this installment we get to see Jack and Riley adjust to the addition of Max to their family. I loved the way Liam's story is brought to us intermingled with his new found relationship with Marcus. It's not overdone and yet you feel every emotion that he goes through, good and bad. With the support of those around him, Liam learns to accept what happened to him and that he's worth the respect, responsibilities, and the love that he's being shown.
If you follow my reviews, you will know I have a soft spot for RJ Scott's books and the Texas series is no exception.
I was slightly nervous about reading this book, worried the story might be too Christmassy-sweet, but nothing could be further from the truth. Texas Christmas was wonderful, blending story lines of the family kind, with the continuing love story of Jack and Riley, and introducing drama with Liam's story. It was all perfectly balanced and not overdone - perfect!
Liam is running from an abusive past, young and hurt and afraid. Marcus is older and may not think he is looking to settle down but is the perfect man to show Liam what real love is all about.
Riley and Jack's family continues to be a focus as they celebrate the birth of a nephew and look to expand their own growing family. There are cute and realistic scenes with the twins and touches of sadness as they wait eagerly for Max to be theirs.
Jack and Riley continue to delight and the scenes of them together are a fabulous combination of erotic and passionate while being romantic and full of love. I love the way RJ creates sizzling sex scenes that are hot and steamy while allowing her men to also show a soft and romantic side.
Oh, and I love that barn!
A copy of this book was provided by the author in return for an honest review.
I publish all my m/m reviews on my blog so if you want to see all my m/m reviews in one place come visit at Because Two Men Are Better Than One!
~~I received a free copy of this book to read and review for Wicked Reads ~~
This is the fifth book in the series, and you definitely need to read them in order. That will be no hardship I can assure you, these are lovely stories.
Following on directly from Texas Family - we get to see how Riley and Jack cope with their newborn twins, work and their wider family. Riley is reluctant to employ a nanny, as he was brought up by a succession of them. He wants to be involved in his children's care. It is lovely watching him and Jack doing everything for their family, and doing it together. They somehow manage not to lose the importance of being close with each other too. There are some moments which be very familiar to any parent! I also loved the care with which the sensory room is made for Max, as well as Hatty's clear need for him to be at the D.
There is some unwelcome drama which has followed Liam, their latest horse-hand, which gives Marcus a chance to step up. We also catch up with Robbie and Eli, as they move into their new home.
All in all, the build up to Christmas is full of family, love and hope for a better future.
I don't know if this is the end for this series, but if it is than it was a wonderful way to end a series, however, I sincerely hope it's not while the story was good and in many ways felt complete where Riley & Jack were concerned there are other things that I wanted to know, mostly about Liam and Marcus. I like this couple and once again I am surprised that the age difference doesn't really bother me. While 8 years might seem like a bit much right now while Liam is only 20 (21 by the end of the book)in another 5 years not so much and given what he went through I think Liam is in some ways a bit more mature than a lot of young men his age. I would love to see a bit more of their story and I think there is more to Eli & Robbie as well. I guess time will tell if Ms Scott has more in store for these lovable characters or not? I sincerely hope so, this group just leaves me feeling happy and optimistic about the world.
While this was not my favorite of the whole series, it was a good read and I am sad to see this series end. I loved this series from the beginning, Jack and Riley were great and I am glad that this one wrapped everything up nicely. Thank you Ms. Scott for giving us a great series with my favorite...cowboys.
I haven't read it because it's not out yet. BUT I know it's going to be brilliant. If I could give 6stars it still wouldn't be enough! As predicted This is an awesome book in an awesome series. Full of love, action adventure and family. What more could you need?
I confess, I had a Texas read-a-thon this week. I bought Texas Christmas as soon as I discovered it had been released. I am so glad I did, too. I couldn't stop reading, again. I just love that in a book. An excellent addition to the series.
Cosa posso dire? FINALMENTE ci siamo!
Per me è ❤ ❤ ❤ ❤ e 💋
This one's a shorter length but it still manages to pack in soap worthy plotting of the highest calibre.
The only difference this time is that it doesn't directly affect Jack and Riley but it does lead to new plans and proposals for developments on the ranch.
In this one the majority of the tensions surround ranch hand Liam and Magnus, who has become a family friend after the surrogacy.
Threats from Liam's past come back to haunt him and risk a showdown on the ranch of epic proportions and it was lovely to see the way everyone rallied around him.
There's more new characters introduced, including the delightful nanny Carol, and the old barn sees some intense sexual action as Riley and Jack take stock of their lives.
Onto book six and the further exploration of life at the Double D.
