Dramatic juxtaposition of old and new photographs reveals architectural richness of Boston. 59 side-by-side views document city's growth between 1850 and 1980. Here are narrow streets surrounded by skyscrapers and building facades that range from early Federal styles to the latest examples of the Modern Movement.
I love the Then and Now books of cities I keep visiting. The 'modernization' of Boston seems to have develloped with big big shocks. One can almost feel the frustration of the citizens when the next ugly highrise suddenly blocks the view towards the harbor. As this books was published in the early 80's it's about time the next Then and Now Boston edition is made. Or maybe I'll try to match the photographs myself on my next visit! : - )
Reviewing yet another book that compares historical and "current" pictures of Boston. This one is from 1982! So even the modern photos are about 40 years old. Interesting, as always.
