**'Certain writers write from being empathic and not from being experienced -- And those are the writers that most readers are drawn to..'

Delightful read!
Such a very nice and elating 1st book from Kristin Keppler -- which can also be a standalone read.
I always enjoy and love when an author includes diversity et al in their storylines -- makes them so much more enticing.
Highly recommended book!

“One Last Summer” by Kristin Keppler is a perfect book for vacations or a weekend at the beach. Sit down, enjoy a drink, and read the entertaining story about Emerson, who wants to enjoy one last carefree summer before the serious side of life begins. But as is so often the case, things turn out differently than planned.

Aspiring architect Emerson (24) is eagerly awaiting a hopefully positive response from her dream employer, the Bardot Design Studio in Paris, for a three-month internship in the fall. The long wait makes her nervous. To take her mind off things, she spends the summer with her aunt and uncle in North Carolina and works as a waitress at the Sandpiper Beach Bar, where she meets up with old friends. She also reunites with Peyton, her last summer fling. But when Alice, her co-worker, teaches her to surf, it is surprisingly not only the waves that throw her off balance but also the funny, warm, and charming Alice.

Emerson is faced with important decisions. On the one hand, the job - what if she doesn't get her dream job in Paris? She doesn’t have a backup plan. She has only had this one goal since she was twelve years old. Then there are the unexpected and strong feelings and attraction to Alice. Could this woman be the real deal? Or will she leave Emerson if she does go to Europe? Suddenly, everything is up in the air and confuses the hell out of young Emerson. She is torn between fear, joy, insecurity, and happiness. How will she decide?

Enjoying read, the flow of the story is good and easy, with the necessary hiccups to keep the story going but without overdoing it. The POV is from Emerson. Alice is a wonderful young woman who I would have liked to get a little more backstory.

Thanks to Bold Strokes Books and NetGalley for receiving an ARC for an honest review.

If you put a female surfer on the cover of your sapphic romance book, I’m going to read it (probably). I’ve never read a Kristin Keppler novel but that cover was something I couldn’t resist. And I’m glad I didn’t because I really enjoyed this.

Emerson has been spending her summers at her aunt and uncle’s beach house on the North Carolina coast for years, but this is likely her final summer living there, as she’s completing her master’s degree in architecture and the real world is on her doorstep. She just has one more internship to complete—hopefully her dream internship in Paris. And she’s not opposed to reigniting last summer’s fling with Peyton, a gorgeous local woman. But it’s not Peyton who Emerson can’t stop thinking about when she returns to North Carolina, but Alice. Alice her supervisor, a woman Emerson knew from her previous summer but never really noticed—until now.

I ate this up! The pseudo love triangle (it’s not actually a love triangle, but I don’t know what else to call it), the tension surrounding Emerson’s future, the newness of Emerson and Alice’s relationship… It was all great.

I do wish there was a little more romantic build up between Emerson and Alice, if I’m being honest. And they get very serious very quickly (but that’s the way it happens sometimes?). I think Keppler did well to try to build the romance, but I would have liked to know more about their interactions the previous year. But I did enjoy watching them become friends first. And I loved how Keppler handled the Peyton-ness of it all. Now I just need to wait impatiently for the library copy of Peyton’s story, Worth Waiting For , to arrive.

One Last Summer is the perfect summer read. And what I mean by that: it was hot, cute, heartwarming, and relatable! The setting with beaches, surfing, and summer vacations and the search for internships adds to the summery vibe.

The story pulls you almost instantly. All of the characters are so well written and you feel as though you know them. The book has a compelling love triangle - it doesn't feel fake for even a second - but it ends pretty quickly, so if you hate love triangles, you'll still love this.

The MC, Emerson is hilariously relatable and her fear of not getting an internship is so real.

This was really cute and I loved this summer, beach town romance! Personally, it took me a minute to get fully invested but once I got about 30% in, I couldn’t wait to see how the rest of the story unfolded.

I enjoyed getting to know our girl Emerson and the relationships she has found herself in. With Peyton, we get a no strings, casual fling but here comes Alice who Emerson finds herself wanting to get to know more and has this connection with. The overall dynamic is pretty realistic and I enjoyed how these characters were portrayed.

Overall, definitely check out this book if you are looking for a fun, low stakes rom-com, summery beachy read. I’m incredibly thankful for NetGalley and Bold Stroke Books inc. for gifting me this arc!!<3

would like to thank netgalley and the publisher for letting me read this book

emerson had a full on fling with payton last year after being on the rebound from her ex.... now shes back and hoping that maybe she can have a bit more of payton as the sex was amazing.... though they are exclusive they are not serious its just sex...

but theres something different this year for a start emerson is waiting to hear if she has got into the prestigious Bardot Design Studio architectural firm in Paris but as time goes by its not looking hopeful

so she takes up the offer of learning how to surf but with alice... and thats where things start to get interesting....because why does it matter that others are flirting with alice after all they are not a couple but it makes emerson feel all sorts of things and one of them is jealousy.....

interesting times ahead ... for emerson, alice and all that work around them...

a fun beach read that keeps you entertained....

Emerson is an architect student, who needs one more internship to graduate and complete her degree. She has her heart set on a firm in Paris, Bardot. She spends her summer working as a waitress at a beach front restaurant in North Carolina. Emerson had a sexual relationship with Peyton the previous summer and now is hooking up with her again while waiting for the acceptance letter. Alice is an Australian who works at the same restaurant and has been crushing on Emerson for the last year.

I liked both Alice and Emerson's characters. The angst comes form Emerson's stress over deciding which firm to choose and moving to France or staying in the US. Alice's family life is a mystery until the end of the story. And even then we don't get much info on her relationship with her father that seems to dominate many of her feelings.

Peyton was an important part of the story and she also is a bit of mystery. We don't get as much info on her life or thoughts.

I've enjoyed Keepler's other books and she did a good job on this new adult story.

This book was such a joy to read! Kristin has this incredible talent for crafting characters that feel so familiar, almost like we've met them before or know someone just like them. It really drew me into their story and I couldn't help but become completely invested. By the way, I'm curious if there will be a follow-up about Peyton? Overall, it's a perfect choice for a fun summer read!

Thank you to Bold Strokes Books, Inc for the ARC! I have been reading a good amount of beach rom-coms back to back but this one didn't stand out in a positive or negative way to me. The MC's motivation seemed very shallow and I didn't get anything besides "Kiss Girls and Go To Paris". While the world was well built, I didn't feel much depth from the characters and their background.

Adulting is hard. Especially when life is throwing you curveball after curveball. Spend the summer with Emerson at a quaint beach town and go along for the ride. A perfect summer read!

I received an advance copy from Netgalley and I am leaving this review voluntarily.

Emerson is back in Bird Neck, North Carolina, the small beach town where she spent a lot of her summers growing up and working odd jobs. It’s the last summer she’ll be waitressing at the Sandpiper. Come September Emerson will start her final internship to complete her architectural degree. Since she’s been twelve she’s been dreaming of interning at the prestigious Bardot firm in Paris. Although she hasn’t heard back from them about a fall position, Emerson keeps the dream alive. Another thing she hopes to get out of the summer is spending more time with Peyton, the extremely hot girl she spent last summer with smoking up the sheets. That fling turns out not to be hard to pick back up, but why does her attention gets dragged towards the Australian surfergirl behind the bar, Alice. And why does everyone seem to think Alice has a thing for her. While waiting on an acceptance or rejection email for her dream internship, Emerson’s life seems to run away from her in all directions but the expected one.

I literally dove into this story headfirst and only emerged after the final chapter. The story is told from Emerson’s POV and it’s intriguing to be submerged in her way of struggling through major life changes. I was immediately smitten with her. Emerson is smart and fun to be around, but also insecure in the most human of ways.

Emerson’s friendship with Candice is one to envy. They know each other like the back of their hand and support each other through thick and thin. I loved that Emerson has Candice to keep her grounded and steer her, sometimes not so subtly, in the right direction. Emerson’s relationship with her aunt and uncle and her parents is so loving and heartwarming. They love her exactly for who she is and give her all the space to figure out her own path, while cheering her on along the way.

The notion that Alice has been in love with Emerson for ages and was left standing on the sidelines while Emerson hooked up with Peyton last summer, is heartbreaking and endearing at the same time. Alice proves to be a wonderful human being and shows Emerson that in every way possible. I found myself wanting to thump Emerson over the head with a phonebook to get her to catch on sooner.

One Last Summer is a light and very entertaining read, perfect to read while lounging on your beach chair and hearing the crashing waves in the distance. Maybe you’ll even be inspired and try to catch a few waves yourself!

This was my first book by this author and I enjoyed the beach summer read.

Emerson Fields in back in Bird's Neck, North Carolina for the summer after failing to get her dream internship. She picks up the same waitressing job she had before and her casual relationship with Peyton. All is going pretty good minus her stressing about being accepted for the fall internship at Bardot in Paris. She has to get another internship in order to graduate. Her best friend insists she should learn how to surf and she goes to her coworker Alice to learn. Instead she find so much more.

I enjoyed the premise and the buildup from their friendship to more. It was written well with good detail and backstories. I wish it hadn't just been in Emerson's POV as knowing Alice's would have helped the story better in my opinion.

Overall, a good summer book. I received an ARC from Netgalley in exchange for an honest review.

I received this ARC in exchange for my honest review.

This was the first book I’ve read by this author and I thought it was a really cute story.

One last summer was a nice easy read but still very well written. Definitely a feel good summertime book.

I thought the characters were well developed and I enjoyed the plot line. The main protagonist and her journey were very relatable. The MC Emerson is basically going through a crisis of career and a crisis of the heart and honestly, who hasn’t been there?

A few typos and grammatical errors here and there but nothing that can’t be worked through.

I definitely recommend if you’re looking for a toes in the sand, beach type romance novel.

Title: One Last Summer

Author: Kristin Keppler

Genre: Contemporary Romance

Rating: ★★★★☆
Release Date: 9th July 2024

Kristin Keppler’s "One Last Summer" is a delightful, heartwarming novel that captures the magic of summer, the thrill of new love, and the uncertainty of facing life’s big decisions. Set against the beautiful backdrop of a North Carolina beach town, this story is perfect for anyone looking for a fun and engaging summer read.

Emerson Fields is gearing up for what she hopes will be her last carefree summer before starting her dream internship at Bardot Design Studio in Paris. The catch? Her application hasn’t been accepted yet. With no backup plan, Emerson heads to North Carolina to stay with her aunt and uncle and return to her seasonal waitressing job.
Here, she resumes her no-strings-attached fling with local heartthrob Peyton Reilly.

To distract herself from the stress of waiting for Bardot's response, Emerson decides to learn how to surf and enlists the help of her coworker, Alice Scott. Unexpectedly, she finds herself falling for the charming Aussie surfer. As her casual relationship with Peyton continues, Emerson's feelings for Alice deepen, and she finds herself at a crossroads. Will she pursue her architectural dreams in Paris, continue her fling with Peyton, or follow her heart with Alice?

What I Loved:

1. Compelling Love Triangle: The dynamic between Emerson, Peyton, and Alice is wonderfully complex and engaging. The contrast between her casual fling with Peyton and her deeper connection with Alice adds a delightful tension to the story.
2. Surfing and Summer Vibes: The vibrant beach setting and Emerson’s surfing lessons bring an irresistible summer vibe to the story. The descriptions of the ocean, the thrill of catching waves, and the laid-back beach town life make for an immersive and relaxing read.
3. Relatable Protagonist: Emerson’s journey is relatable for anyone who has faced uncertainty about their future. Her struggles with career aspirations, romantic relationships, and personal growth are portrayed with authenticity and heart.
4. LGBTQ+ Representation: The budding romance between Emerson and Alice is handled with sensitivity and care. Their relationship is sweet, genuine, and a refreshing take on love and self-discovery.

Alice’s Aussie charm and her role as a surf instructor bring a fun and unique twist to the story. Her laid-back attitude and infectious love for the ocean add a refreshing dynamic to Emerson’s summer.

"One Last Summer" is a fun, heartfelt, and captivating read that perfectly captures the essence of a transformative summer. Kristin Keppler’s engaging writing style and well-drawn characters make this novel a joy to read. While Emerson’s path is filled with challenges and choices, her journey of self-discovery, love, and career aspirations is both relatable and inspiring.

The novel’s blend of summer romance, personal growth, and the thrill of chasing dreams makes it an ideal beach read. So, grab your sunglasses, find a cozy spot by the water, and dive into Emerson’s unforgettable last summer. You’ll be rooting for her at every turn, and you might just fall in love with the charming beach town and its colourful inhabitants along the way.

Beware, some spoilers ahead!

The story is told from Emerson's point of view, in which she navigates spending the summer with her Aunt and Uncle in a small town away from her family. She is forced to juggle her job at the Sandpiper, her growing feelings for her coworker Alice, her complicated past with Peyton, and her decision about what to do with her future begins to way on her with each passing day.

I found Emerson to be an extremely relatable character, someone who wants to have a break from her regular life, have a little fun, yet is willing to work hard for what she wants and fight for the people that matter in her life. Her struggle was felt as she began to get closer to Alice but also didn’t want to give up her dream of going to Paris for her dream internship. Alice also grew on me too. You could tell she was definitely jealous of Peyton from the start, but was able to be patient and wait for her chance to be with the girl she was meant to be with. Cool, surfer, with an Australian accent, who knows how to cook and mix drinks, I mean, how could you not fall in love with her?!!!

Peyton was an interesting character, I would have loved to have learned more about her backstory and maybe even a future story about her and the girl from the Aquarium. The love triangle was well handled and I’m happy the outcome felt genuine and not forced or overdone with miscommunication. Emerson’s best friend Candice was super cute, hilarious, and supportive, and I just love that she calls her grandparents Me-Maw and Pop Pop. Becky was also an interesting character, didn’t really like her in the beginning, but once you know her story everything starts to make sense. Emerson’s parents and Aunt and Uncle seemed like fun and genuine people and especially accepting of Emerson and Alice.

I liked the ending but…. I wish there were a couple more chapters that went more into Emerson’s internship in Paris and Alice’s business in Australia and family dynamic. Maybe a couple of chapters from Alice’s point of view would have been helpful and would have added more depth to the story. The overall themes of personal growth, career-life balance, falling in love, friendship, and self-discovery/listening to your heart were well written which made this an absolute great summer read!

Thank you to NetGalley and publisher for an advance digital copy!

This rom-com, follows Emerson escaping her life, with a unknown future, she escapes by distracting herself with a old fling, but what happens when she tries to learn to suffer from the beautiful Alice?

I really liked how the love triangle was written and concluded. I am not a fan of love triangles, but this one was just good. The contrast of the relationships, as well as everyone respecting everyone. I felt like it was just young women understand and going through their emotions and feelings, in a very human and realistic manner, which I really appreciated.

The setting was perfect for the summer, on the beach, suffering, the vibe is just it, for a nice easy summer read. I wish there was more description of the beaches, or settings, but that might be because I miss the hot summers.

The characters were relatable, and likeable. Emerson’s journey is relatable for any young adult, uncertainty and the fear of the unknown. As well as her own fears and dilemmas, it felt seen. As well as how Alice and Peyton were written gave them depth and made me feel for them as well.
The representation, which is just there, it’s not in your face, it’s written as if it was a normal romance which is really nice as sapphic romances are normal romances.

I felt like the pacing wasn’t perfect, it was very fast pace, which is perfect for a quick easy summer read. I just wish the pacing was slightly slower, so we could digest the characters, the plot and in general learn more about other characters. I wish we got more of the post summer relationship but
I understand this is a summer romance. Maybe having multiple POVs, especially Peyton and Alice would of made me connected even more with them and I really would of enjoyed that, as both are so intriguing characters.

I liked the happy ending, the message is also really important for any young reader, who is still figuring out life.

I don’t know why, but this romance touched me a lot more than a usual romance. Maybe it’s how relatable Emerson is, with her struggles with love, and her future. I really enjoyed this read, I would recommend to any romance lover, or anyone looking for an easy by the beach read.

I really enjoyed this summer romance - it had great characters, a great setting and a bit of a more realistic spin on dating and relationships than a lot of books out there.

Emerson is spending what she hopes is her last summer in a North Carolina beach town. Not that she doesn't like it there, it's just that she is one internship away from graduating and starting her career as an architect. Her life-long dream has been to move to Paris and intern at the Bardot school but they rejected her summer application and she still hasn't heard back from them on a fall position either, which has made her a bit anxious. When she arrives back in town, she picks back up her casual relationship with Peyton, who she likes but feels like something is missing with and doesn't see a future with. Despite her fling with Peyton, she finds herself falling for Alice, her manager at the local restaurant she works at. Surfing lessons bring them closer together and she realizes what she was missing with Peyton as she falls for Alice. I loved Alice as a character - she was sweet, shy, funny and Australian!

I found the dynamic between the three women to be realistic but not trashy. There was mutual respect and genuine feelings all around, and like real life sometimes it just takes time to sort through those feelings. They do here, there is no cheating or scandal, and it makes for a bit of a fresh perspective on dating.

There is the underlying storyline of whether Emerson will get in to Bardot, would she even want to move to Paris if it means leaving Alice and the ever-present lack of communication - all of that comes to a head but the story still has it's happily ever after.

Definitely recommend this book - it was a fun and engaging read, and I recommend reading when you want a taste of the summer.

Emerson Field only needs to do a last internship before finishing her architecture degree. While waiting to hear where she may be accepted in the fall she is back living at her aunt’s beach house and working the same waitressing job she had last summer. Last year she was fresh off a break up and started a friends with benefits relationship with Peyton, a marine biologist, who works at the local aquarium. Peyton is still around but she finds herself also being drawn to Alice Scott, a bartender at her work.

I remember that feeling of the unknown when finishing university. Does Emerson want to start something new when her dream job would take her to Paris? I appreciate how the author creates a possible love triangle but makes it work with no heartbreak or cheating. I love Alice and wish I got a little more of her family relationship other than she doesn’t want to be part of the family business. She seems more mature and is looking for something more than a fling. I like the laid back atmosphere of beach and surf life.

At just under 250 pages this is a short novel, and some parts felt repetitive. I get that work is a place where Alice and Emerson can interact but there were a lot of scenes set there. And the check ins with the all wise best friend felt formulaic. I think that while I found the entire story very sweet, I didn’t love Emerson. She is a nice person but very self centered, and who isn’t when they are a new adult. So while I’m marking down a little because I didn’t connect to the MC, I’m still rounding up because of the epilogue and the genuine sweetness of the novel. Thank you to NetGalley and Bold Strokes Books for the ARC and I am leaving a voluntary review. (3.5 Stars)

This was a fun, summer-themed romance. I liked the setup with Emerson and Peyton, and how they kind of mutually realized their futures lay elsewhere. I liked coming to realize that Alice wasn’t just a bystander. Emerson’s constant struggle with the possible roads her future might take felt real. Candice was a highlight, and Emerson’s family had some great moments too. There were some fantastically quotable lines, especially later in the book. Basically a lot to like.

There were two reasons it wasn’t five stars for me: first the Emerson/Peyton/Alice thing went on long enough to make me a little uncomfortable. I thought it was a great angle, don’t get me wrong, but at some point it felt like it started causing a bit too much pain for my preference. Then at the end, something came up with Alice that felt kinda out of left field. She’d played down her family so much that when it turned out they had a significant impact on the story… I guess I just wanted it to have been better telegraphed to the reader, even if it was always going to come as a surprise to Emerson.

So my takeaway is that I love this as the first half of Peyton’s story; it was fun but not my one of my favorites as a standalone. Put it together with Worth Waiting For, though, and we have a winner.

This is a book that really personifies what I in my mind think American summers may look like in a small beach town based on all TV series and movies I have watched. It is all beach, surf, partying, friendship and most importantly a whole lot of romance and drama.

Emerson is spending one more summer in North Carolina with her aunt and uncle and a summer job at a beach bar. Last summer she had just been ditched by her girlfriend of 4 years so a rebound casual fling with the local hottie Peyton was just perfect. This summer she encounters Peyton again and perhaps picking up where they left is what Emerson wants when this summer just one big wait on finding out if she will get an internship at Bardot in Paris this fall, before she migrates into the real world.

Then there is sweet, comforting and helpful Alice. Alice helps her to learn how to surf and one day Emerson realizes that she has feelings for Alice. Perhaps the reason Alice doesn’t like Peyton is because Peyton is sleeping with Emerson? What if Alice has had feelings for Emerson this entire time, and she just never realized that?

Can they make it work, Emerson has so many plans for the future and Alice has obligation back home in Australia?

One Last Summer was such a fun, adorable summer read! I love a book set at a NC beach town!

We follow Emerson, who is at a crossroads in her life. She is spending the summer working at a restaurant in a NC beach town while waiting to hear from her dream internship for the fall, after she was passed up for the summer internship. At first she falls into the same situationship she had the summer before with Peyton, a local surfer. She starts to develop feelings for Alice, the bartender at the restaurant.

I loved the summer vibes of this book, and got very invested in all the characters. I also absolutely adore the amount of real, down-to-earth conversations had in this book. These conversations made the characters feel like real, adult women and honestly made this book for me.

Would recommend this book to anyone who is looking for a light fun summer read. This book had me giddy and excited to read on.

One last Summer by Kristen Keppler was my first book by this author and it had all the good summer vibes of a small town by the beach. I felt the characters were well written and believable and the romance was well-paced and chemistry between the two MC’s was definitely present.

When I started reading this book I was a little unsure how the dynamic between Emerson, Peyton, and Alice was going to work as I am admittedly not a fan of love triangles, polyamory etc. Without giving spoilers I’m happy to report that I liked the way it worked out and that there wasn’t any cheating or anything super cringey between the three.

My only complaint is this book is only from Emerson’s POV and I really prefer if it’s told from both. However that is a MINOR complaint. Overall I was very impressed with this author and will be looking up her work in the future.

I received an ARC of this ebook from NetGalley and the publisher and all opinions are my own.

This is a great beach read and I read it literally at the beach. I loved this story, but also how especially Emerson grows throughout the book.
Her whole life, Emerson had her mind set on one particular thing, not able to see the other things in her life. Throughout the book, she learns that she shouldn't focus on just one thing.
The character of Alice is lovable, but also a bit heart breaking, it makes it all the better as you're reading it, as you can just feel her sadness at some points, even though the book is written from Emerson's point of view.
There was a bit of drama that was not really necessary for me, but I didn't mind it either. Eventually, there's a happy ending where Emerson and Alice got what they wanted and each other.
I do hope that there's a possibility of another book, but this time telling the story of Payton.

One last Summer is a perfect summer read. 🌊

I enjoyed this book a lot, the characters and romance were so realistic.

Soon as I picked this book up I could not put down I’ve not read a book like this before and really enjoyed it. I finished one last summer in a couple of days because of how much I enjoyed it.

The characters were well written and believable, I enjoyed getting to know Emerson and Alice, and would've loved a POV from Alice too. It was still good to have some Aussie representation in the novel and it came across pretty good, not toooo stereotypical.

I actually found Payton to be a great side character as well, and I'm glad how all that played out wasn't cringeworthy.

Overall, a nice read that gives you warm feels. Would recommend.

I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.

This was a nice light read. Low angst, low spice, easy going. I liked all the characters, and I'm always happy when there is a dog 😁 I like that the 3rd act break up was more of a pause than an actual ending of relationship. They cause me too much stress so I'm glad I didn't have that with this book. I'm looking forward to reading the next book. It seems it runs along side this story so might still see Emerson and Alice a little which will be a nice bonus

This was really cute! It took a little while for me to get into it and the different parts of the story felt slightly disconnected at first, however, it settled down nicely and made for a really nice beach town romance. This book would make a great little rom-com, pretty low stakes but enough heart to keep the reader caring about our main characters.

This story is about Emerson and her journey to snatch her dream job in Paris. Will it be her last Summer with her aunt and uncle? What girl will she end up with romantically? Sorry this was not my kind of book.
