This is my 12 year old non-English speaking stepson's English reader for this year so I picked it up to see how difficult it will be and how I can help him.

I think it's an interesting story and that he will like it. It's kind of a Carmen Sandiego crossed with Agatha Christie's Man in The Brown Suit. However there is a lot of death and murder in here, including our main character murdering a criminal by throwing him overboard - a crime which is completely glossed over. I'm not sure that it is very suitable for his age group in this respect.

I wasn't going to add this to my GoodReads, but came here to see if it was an abridged version that I could pick up (last year it was White Fang the year above are reading an abridged version of Frankenstein), which it unfortunately isn't.

I'll write back later to see how we got on with reading it together.

Not bad for an elementary reader book written over 40 years ago. While this was for elementary readers, this was no children's book. The plot and vocabulary were straightforward and interesting, but the writing was simple. The attitude toward death was a bit cavalier, which is why I think the book was geared toward adults. I doubt I read this as a kid.

What a nice little read!
It had the mystery tune that I love, the characters were easy to understand and imagine. The illustrations made it easier as well. And also I want to own the black cat even if it was wooden 😂

Read this book in like 15 minutes. Still kind of surprised how the main character just threw Peterson off that boat 😭. Very interesting though, I would've never guessed that I'd come across a book like this one.

Read the Burmese edition. The story was entertaining enough to get me through it, though I would have stopped if it weren't for language study tbh.

Discussion questions:
This book is a detective story. Do you like reading a detective story?
-Yes, I like reading it very much. When I was an elementary school student, I liked reading it. My favorite one was "Yumemizu Kiyoshirou" series.

My impression:
I thought this story was interesting but it was a little difficult for me to read it because it's a little long. In addition it took many times to understand. However, it was very good for my reading ability to improve and I liked this story.

This book is clear and easy to understand. It includes about 7000+ words. I spent about 2 days to finish it even though started at 12th, November and ended at 22nd November. My main goal is to gather words and new usages of old words from each piece I have read. Thus ... I got a lot. I'm satisfied and also it's an interesting story.

This was fun. I didn't expect/remember how violent the plot would become - lots of people die - because it's written in very simple English, at an elementary school level.

I'll be giving my copy of this book away because the language is too easy for my adult self, but I really hope whoever reads it next will have a good time with it, because I sure did.
