Sajo & the Beaver People

Rate this book
The 'beaver people' are represented in this book by Chilawee and Chikanee, two beaver kittens, whose names mean 'Big Small' and 'Little Small'. Rescued by an Indian hunter after their home dam had been broken by an invading otter, they are taken home to his daughter Sajo and his son Shapian and become the beloved pets of the whole Indian village. Their adventures with the children and their final reunion with the parent beaver make a story that is truly irresistible.

About the author

Grey Owl

58 books26 followers
Grey Owl (or Wa-sha-quon-asin, from the Ojibwe wenjiganoozhiinh, meaning "great horned owl" or "great grey owl") was the name Archibald Belaney adopted when he took on a First Nations identity as an adult. A British native, he was most notable as an author and one of the "most effective apostles of the wilderness". While his writings showed his deep knowledge and concern about the environment, Belaney's account of his origins as "Grey Owl" was mostly fictional. The consequences of the revelation were dramatic. Publishers immediately ceased producing his books under the name Grey Owl. In some cases his books were withdrawn from publication.

We loved this — chose to read it aloud rather than assign it for an independent read. It’s a heart-warming story.

A sweet story about a little indigenous girl and the two baby beavers she and her older brother care for over one summer. It is quite an exciting story because one of the beavers is taken from them and they have to pass through a forest fire and other dangers and even a trip to a city to get it back. My 8-year-old boy loved it.

I felt the sudden urge to look up one of my favourite childhood books and I was not dissappointed. Still as heartwarming as ever, I guess it kind of showed me again where my love for animals and, later on, vegan and AR tendencies sprouted from.

Very charming book for children and adults. I any my kids also enjoyed the drawings by the author -- he was no great artist but the drawings are lovingly done with authentic details.

It has everything you could want in a children's novel: cute little animals, adventure, excitement, living in nature, and two kids trying to make their way in the world against all odds.

Lovely story, a lot of run on sentences and chapters that feel like they should wrap up sooner

This book being based on a true story, I felt connected with it in ways I cant explain. The connection with animals they explain to the reader, I love it because I love animals so much. And the story is very visual too, I imagined every single thing explained in this book. Definitely will remember this story forever.
