Rate this book
A sweet tale starring a gigantic cat who's summoned to a fantasy world by a lonely, elderly witch.

In her youth, Jeanne was a powerful witch who vanquished the evil Demon King and saved the world--but over time, the people she rescued have forgotten about her and her noble deeds. Now she is a short-spoken old woman, living by herself in a secluded forest...until she summons a cat from Earth to her home. The former city kitty is now the size of a giant, and must acclimate to this new world at Jeanne's side. Through eating the food Jeanne prepares, and offering a head for pats, can this furry feline soothe the loneliness of the forgotten witch?

(4.0) Yet another fun volume of this manga. The plot begins to thicken (even more) with more Mew hijinks and introductions of other characters.

This volume was just as good as the first. My grinch heart grew a couple of sizes. Also, someone please give that assassin a bath. PLEASE.

This volume was definitely more gory than the previous one. I still like this series but my enjoyment suffered due to that.

This second volume of A Cat from Our World and the Forgotten Witch delves more into the backstory of the witch and the fallout from the quest where they had to save the world and who was left in charge. And when assassins are sent after the witch, it's up to the cat to keep her safe.

I admittedly wasn't exactly in love with the first volume of this manga and honestly I'm still ambivalent enough that I probably won't continue from here. This volume is quite a bit darker and less cozy than the previous one, which solved some of my issues about it being too cozy. I think I'm just not enough of a cat person for stories like these, despite having a cat and loving him dearly. This obsession with him being super fluffy and cute just still reads very twee to me. What saved this from being lower rated though is that the bit with the assassin and the cat actually made me giggle so well done there.

If you're more of a cat lover and obsessed with all the things they do and especially if you like fantasy that's somewhere between cozy and dark, this might be more your cup of tea than it is mine.

This installment widened our cast of characters and got the plot set in motion. I really enjoyed it and found myself laughing out loud at some of the characters' actions. Next volume is set to publish in September and I can't wait to continue.

Awww! Their little family is growing! I wonder if Mew will like Flad now (despite his smell) that he saved him. And Rue has magic?!!

Plot? In my silly cat isekai manga? More likely than you'd think. Still plenty of cute giant cat shenanigans.

I'm curious to see where this one goes from here.

I'm enjoying the newly introduced characters and the plot is beginning to thicken. Still enjoying the giant cat silliness!

I like how this is not more of the same from volume one. it expands on the world and story, and we learn more about the culture of this world... with silly cat happenings.

I like this series a lot! I'm reading it with my mom and it is so cute! I love Rue and the assassin! This series is surprisingly feel-good despite having so many sad flashbacks. I want to learn more about their pasts!

6/24 So thanks to some ill-fitting strong violence, gore, and heavy story turns, this cozy fantasy is no longer. Still, intrigued enough to try the next volume.

I hadn't read any manga since I was a teenager and really wanted to get back into it. Inspired by BookTuber Steph Loves, I looked into 'cosy witchy' manga and found this series.

"Long ago, Jeanne was a legendary witch who defeated the Demon King and saved the world. But now, her heroics are forgotten, and she lives alone in a quiet forest, her powerful magic a distant memory. Seeking companionship, Jeanne summons a cat from Earth—only for the once-ordinary feline to arrive as a towering giant! As the oversized kitty adjusts to its strange new world, it bonds with Jeanne through shared meals, cozy moments, and a steady supply of head pats. Together, they begin to heal the solitude of a forgotten hero and rediscover the magic of companionship."

I already have volume 3 and have preordered volume 4—I’m absolutely in love with this series! The only challenge I’ve faced so far is figuring out how to review it without spoiling anything.

In volume 1, we’re introduced to the first six episodes, which set the stage, provide the background, and immerse us in this enchanting fantasy world. By volume 2, we start learning more about why we’re following these protagonists, and new fantasy characters are introduced to enrich the storyline.

What I didn’t expect were some of the more mature themes and emotions. Initially, I thought it would be a light, witchy, “save the world” kind of tale. However, a theme to note—especially as it may be triggering—is child abuse and child slavery. While I was surprised by such heavy content, I felt that it was handled carefully, considering the gravity of the subject.

When reading reviews of other manga series, I noticed many readers pointing out that some series can feel overcrowded with characters. However, I think this series strikes a really nice balance. Each character contributes meaningfully to the story, making it all the more engaging. Volume 1 I would rate 4.5 stars. Volume 2 I would rate 5 stars.

Typical isekai protagonist... got himself* a harem!

Granted, as a cat, Mew gets a "harem" of... folks who want to play with him, haha. Comes from being a literal softie, I guess!

I admit it's a little bit weird; imagine being in a world where no cats existed... then you found a GIANT one... and felt that its fur was SO SOFT.

...hmm, okay, maybe I'd want to touch it, but a polar bear could be the softest thing in the world, and I would still be wary of pursuing it just to touch it, haha.

I guess it's like, this story is mostly about the absurdity of 1. a CAT being resurrected in another world, when humans (especially Japanese teenage males) are the norm for that, and 2. wanting to PET THE CAT in between all the normal kind of high fantasy drama. I admit that I sort of ignored that aspect of it in the first book, but they make a big deal about the not only finding out who "the witch" really is but also revealing the reason for the assassination attempts. Huh, it's like finding out a tasty food is also healthy! I'm more interested in the rest of the series, now!

Recommended for cat lovers (though, read the books in order, maybe) and/or anyone looking for a new twist on the "resurrected in another world" stories!

*The first book completely avoided the topic of whether Mew is a boy or girl cat, but it really doesn't matter. I'm using he/him now, because Jeanne specifies that to Rue. How does Jeanne know when nobody in their world knows what a cat is? ...Male Default, I guess?

Someone has been sending assassins to eliminate the witch in the forest. But they did not reckon Mew's cuteness and the Witch's true identity. Jeanne and Mew rescued a young elf girl from slavers, and her owners are also intent on getting her back. But an even greater evil is brewing and the world may need Jeanne's skills again soon. If only she had her magic.

The complexities of this world and a more overarching plot are beginning to take shape in this volume. There's also the formation of a rag-tag group of unexpected allies. Mew doesn't seem like the magical protector beast they need for such a time as this, but over and over Jeanne and others are pleasantly surprised. Cuteness and kindness often win the day.

Notes on content:
Language: Maybe 1 minor swear. I can't remember clearly now.
Sexual content: One female character hints that she had to sell herself to make ends meet, but no details. Some jailers make some lewd comments and veiled threats of what they will do to a female prisoner, but someone intervenes before they can carry anything out. She does dress in a rather low-cut dress, and after one incident seems to barely be keeping her dress on.
Violence: There are several fights and battles with some injuries and a little blood shown (often Mew shows up and things stop). One person is tortured (not much on page). A giant creature stomps through town and it is suggested it crushes some people.
Ethnic diversity: Most characters appear to be light skinned. One character has pointy ears like an elf and had been a slave.
LGBTQ+ content: None specified
Other: Child slavery. Corrupt government leaders. Jeanne was a hero but her magic was taken and there are rumors she is now a witch; she faces unwarranted prejudice. A building magical evil in the background.

Jeanne and her new giant cat attract more strays: a disgraced former knight captain, who came to assassinate them but wound up living in their yard; and an escape half-elf slave girl. As the four get used to each other and play with a giant kitty, clues are laid relating the monster uprising Jeanne fought against, and the woman seeking her downfall.

I'll admit, I wasn't as into this book as the previous one, though it was still really good, and often delightful. That was largely inevitable, given the nature of the story being told. A lot of comedy-based manga seem to head in this direction, that the story starts to take precedence over the original wackiness. There's still plenty of visual fun here, with the mercenary meeting the cat for the first time, and a lot of games of fetch, but they're starting to take backseat to the plot. Further, as a second volume, that plot is mostly set up at this point. Again, probably necessary given the nature of the story, but it does mean that what's taking up more space here are ideas that aren't fully established in this specific volume. The new characters are all very endearing though, and while the assassin with the sword leg doesn't get as much focus as any of the other newbies, she's fairly intriguing as well. So yeah--I'm not quite as enthused as the first volume, but it's hooked me enough that I'm looking forward to what's to come.

Like a lot of cat manga, the cat - Mew - continues to be cute and do cute cat-things, like be picky about food, make judge-y faces at bad-smelling strangers, and mess around with kids. However, in the background, an evil queen sends assassins after Mew's master Jeanne, while demons appear to terrorize townsfolk. It's an interesting mash-up of cute cat antics + generic medieval fantasy.

Artistically, the highlight is the cat. Mew makes a lot of funny faces, and there are a few pages that showcase his fluffiness. When it comes to the human characters, the art is serviceable and neat, though not particularly memorable.

Overall, volume 2 delivers on more Mew and more plot, so I'll look forward to volume 3!

A lot of world building and adding of new characters already! It moved forward fast which I appreciate but wish we’d seen more of Jeanne & Mew’s bonding before other characters were added in. I feel like there was actually less of Mew the Cat in this volume, to be honest, he kind of took a backseat to the other happenings which is why it wasn’t quite a 4.5 or 5.

I also feel like Jeanne was really quick to take people in for a recluse hermit - in the first volume she wasn’t even taking to the cat and now she has a kid & knight essentially living with her.

I appreciate that a lot is happening in the story, though and am eager to see where it goes next. Clearly there is some magic in the former slave-child, Rue so I guess Jeanne will have an apprentice on her hands.

I found myself smiling so much more than with the first volume, largely thanks to the cat's charming antics and interactions. They truly stole the show!
What really blew me away, though, was the plot twist. It completely reshaped my understanding of the protagonist's past from the first volume, adding a fantastic layer of depth I wasn't expecting.
I also adored the introduction of new characters and the palpable sense of found family that emerged. Even with the unfolding intrigues and a bit more...blood... the overall feeling of the read remained incredibly cozy and comforting. It's a delightful blend!

Seems a few people can still recognize Jeanne, though others still write her off as "the witch" and can't see past their own prejudice. Interesting to learn more about where their orders came from and just how perhaps Jeanne may have survived this long. She seems to be acquiring an odd sort of misfit family in her little dwelling all of the sudden, probably even more unexpected for someone who has been shunned and/or alone for so much time. Between Jeanne's past and Mew's fluff, seems they've been better protected than they thought originally.

I don’t want to get into the plot and spoil anything, but this volume did not disappoint! Everything I loved about the first volume is even better here with the addition of new characters! While I still consider this series wholesome and cozy, danger tends to lurk around every corner, threatening our cast of characters. I am really rooting for everyone to come out unscathed, but the sinister nature of the antagonists leaves me feeling like their peaceful found family is a house of cards that could collapse at any moment. I can’t wait to read the next volume!

It was so cute!! But also partly sad, because the story of the witch is actually tragic. I loved how it has a bit of slice of life, a bit of action, a bit of fantasy. If it were a book, I could’ve called it a cozy fantasy (and maybe I still can, but it feels weird to categorize manga in such manner).

The funny thing was how everyone thought the cat was a beast and they couldn’t figure out what it is, because they don’t have such pets in their world

I love this series. Mew is adorable and I love that we get to hear some of their thoughts. Especially when poor Flad just wanted to pet them and he stinks. Wash up man, and you can get pets! And I love that he is protecting them. New character added of young Rue, that's going to be interesting (does she have magic?). However, the scenes with the Dowager Empress remind us that this is not just cute cat manga. Still… can't wait for the next volume.
