The Azantian Trilogy #3

Crown of Salt and Bone

Rate this book
A lost king. A deadly bargain. And the ultimate sacrifice.

After losing the love of her life on an island of horrors, Margrete Wood opens a portal to the Underworld. She’s claimed her full powers, becoming a powerful goddess, and she’ll use her new magic to steal Bash’s soul back from the realm of the dead.

Darius, the God of the Sea, has waited centuries for Margrete to return. She’s the reincarnation of the woman he once loved, and he’s hellbent on wiping away Bash’s memory. But the Underworld is filled with ruthless gods and corrupt bargains, and when Margrete makes a deal with the God of Death himself to get her king back, Darius agrees to help—for a steep price.

With monsters of the deep to slay and a death god to appease, Margrete is forced to work with her enemy before time runs out and everything she loves is destroyed. For good, this time.

The third book of this exciting fantasy trilogy is perfect for readers who love high-seas adventures, swashbuckling heroes, and forbidden, steamy romance. Fans of Danielle L. Jensen’s The Bridge Kingdom, and Sarah J. Maas’s A Court of Thorns and Roses will be enthralled.

“Maybe that’s why heroes belonged solely in his stories, because real life was messy and gray, and he no longer assumed choosing the wrong path made him evil.”

Crown of Salt and Bones is the epic conclusion of The Azantian Trilogy and I’m feeling satisfied with how everything got wrapped up.

This story started right after the ending of the 2nd book, to be honest it’s been a while since I read the 2nd book so I forgot some things but thankfully as I read on there’s a little bit of info along the way that manage to jog my memory about what happen in the previous book.

The world building is expanding as Margrete explore the realm where the Gods rules. It was exciting seeing new places and also meeting all the different rulers of each realms.
I absolutely love the show of power from Margrete, that last battle was epic!

Darius's redemption arc is one of my favorite parts of the story and also the scene with Bash’s mother. While she didn’t appear long but her actions spread warmth in my heart.
Such an emotional read with unexpected twists along the way makes this book so hard to put down!

Overall, this is a great ending to the series. While I’m sad to see this series comes to an end, I feel satisfied knowing the characters in this story has a happy ending.
I’m looking forward to read more books from this author in the future, maybe a story abour Margrete’s sister – Birdie would be great!

I received an advanced review copy for free from the author, and I am leaving this review voluntarily. Huge thank you to the author and publisher!

This was one hell of a rollercoaster!!! Darius is still and definitely my favourite character EVER!! I NEED A BOOK JUST ABOUT HIM AND MILA PLEASE!! I’m so sad it’s over, honestly the last sentence made me tear up. Bash and Margrete will hold a very special place in heart alongside this series that needs more hype.

I was given a free copy of this book in exchange for an honest review. What an incredible series! The love story between Bash and Margrete was simply beautiful. This book is truly the perfect “romantasy” combination, never leaning too far to either side. The magic system could have been further explained or defined, though it wasn’t difficult to understand what was happening. I loved the morally grey aspects of the characters and the difficult choices they made throughout. I especially appreciated having a strong, independent main character who did not give up her power to save the world. This book really made you believe in the magic, love, and relationships it created. Amazing!

“I see his darkness, just as he sees mine.”

First I would like to thank Owl City Press and NetGalley for allowing me to read an arc of this wonderful book! I am honored to have been given the chance to read it and leave an honest review.

This was a wonderful ending to a truly amazing trilogy! The Azantian trilogy has been a favorite of mine since I picked up the first book, each book hooked me instantly. As usual Katherine Quinn’s books are filled with adventures and swoon-worthy romance, as well as charming pirates, sea gods and various different sea creatures lurking beneath the depths--this is the perfect book for anyone looking for an engaging fantasy with a bit of romance!

Crown of Salt and Bone was such an emotional and beautiful conclusion, unveiling different sides to various different beloved characters and really putting them up against it all. I adored seeing all the characters grow and become the people they were meant to be, the character development in this series is beyond excellent! I especially enjoyed seeing how Margrete and Bash grew together not only as people but as a couple in this story, it really showed you the strength of their bond.

Katherine Quinn also has such a way with detail; her descriptions effortlessly pull you into the depths of the story. You can almost smell the brine and hear the crashing waves, I absolutely adore her way with words! There is nothing better than feeling as if you’re experiencing the extraordinary adventures yourself as you’re reading along.

I can’t wait to read more from this author, and I do hope we can have more Darius content in the future! Reading these books were an utter delight, and if you’re looking for a swoon worthy pirate romance filled with daring adventures then this is a book I would highly recommend!

Crown of Salt and Bone - 1.75⭐️ 3🌶️

Romantic Fantasy
Magic
Gods
🏳️‍🌈 side characters
Mythical creatures
Secret history
Self discovery

I wish that there had been a mini recap to kick this finale.

The premise was good, but there was so much going on, all while not moving the plot forward in a way that was exciting or unique. I found myself bored and unconcerned throughout due to inconsistent pacing.

The magic system remained vague throughout all three books. I was hoping that with the setting for a lot of this book we would get some great opportunities for magic and world building… but the potential for clarification and really honing in was a big miss. The world building only expanded because the MC’s went to a different world…

The characters were consistently lacking depth. And while the redemption arc of Darius was nice, it was annoying to have to sift through him as a distraction from the main couple… and the main couple suffered for it. Their chemistry turned stale.

Thank you NetGalley and City Owl Press for and Advance eReader Copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

A heartfelt Thank You to the publisher, City Owl Press, and LibraryThing for this advance copy! I am a happy bunny having to complete this awesome journey of Margrete and Bash!

This is a continuation from where we left off with Margrete becoming a god and ploughing through the Underworld to retrieve Bash's soul. Margrete is coming to terms with her newfound power and still being optimistic to find Bash's soul to reunite with his body which Minthe, Bash's mother, has hidden. She meets Halio, the god of death, who was kind to guide her through the Underworld and meeting the rest of the gods. In her pursue to rescue Bash's soul, she has made a pact with Halio. In order for the pact to succeed, she has to make another pact with Darius, the sea god, who has a hand in killing Bash. Another adventure begins to reunite Bash's soul with his body that involves selfishness, empathy, true love and forgiveness.

It sure was a rollercoaster ride that I find the pace to be inconsistent yet when it reaches the climax, it was well worth enduring it. A lot of details with the usual camaraderie that made this novel wholesome. When I thought it's reaching the end, another twist plot hinders the couple from HEA. It may not be as perfect, but it was good enough.

Even though there were many characters in this trilogy, Katherine has a knack to weave the plots together seamlessly. It was a while back when I last read the second book, but I didn't get lost reading this third one! I do have a short memory span so to not get lost is somewhat surprising! I liked how it ends, expected and yet with a little drama that is so engagingly warm and rosy.

If you are looking for an adventure - romance - fantasy with pirates and sea monsters, this trilogy should fit the bill.

Series Info/Source: This is the third book in The Azantian Trilogy. I got a book for this on ebook from NetGalley for review.

Thoughts: I got about 20% of the way into this one and was really struggling so I ended up setting this aside. I just couldn't remember any of the side characters. There isn't much recapping in the book, so I was perplexed about what was happening. Would have been nice to have some little tidbits to jog my memory or a list of characters at the front of the book.

This book starts with Margrete and a bunch of other characters confronting the other gods in Death's realm. Margrete is trying to bring Bash back from the dead.

I remember Bash and Margrete and remember I found them to be a bit too lovingly annoying in the second book. This book throws a whole bunch of gods at the reader right at the beginning. I couldn't place them in my mind and couldn't really figure out why we cared. All the side characters were similar for me, I could kind of vaguely remember them but didn't understand why they were taking certain actions.

I don't have time to go back and re-read the second book and honestly I didn't like the second book in this series enough to ever want to re-read it. So this is one I ended up setting aside and just giving three stars. I was going to try to push through, but I just don't have the patience for it right now and want to read something I will enjoy.

Actually the more I think about it, I think that it was the writing that made this hard to get back into. I just read the 2nd Poppy War book from R.F. Kuang which has loads more characters than this book and I didn't struggle with that one at all despite the fact I read the first book a long time ago. It literally took Kuang a couple of paragraphs to re-introduce us to the key characters and that was page space well spent.

My Summary (3/5): Overall I didn't enjoy this and struggled to get back into the story and remember any of the side characters. I would only recommend picking this up if you remember the 2nd book really well or if you have the time to go back and re-read the second book in the series. To be fair I didn't absolutely love the 2nd book in this series either, so keep that in mind when reading my thoughts on this one.

A Spellbinding Conclusion to The Azantian Trilogy!
Katherine Quinn has done it again! Crown of Salt and Bone is the perfect ending to a series that has been a wild, emotional, and utterly magical ride. This book has EVERYTHING—dragons, deadly bargains with gods, a love triangle to die for, and enough high-seas adventure to satisfy even the most daring pirates-at-heart.

Margrete Wood is a heroine for the ages. Her transformation from a determined mortal to a powerful goddess is both inspiring and heart-wrenching. Her journey to the Underworld to save Bash’s soul kept me on the edge of my seat, and Darius, the brooding and enigmatic Sea God, added an entirely new level of tension to the story. The push-and-pull of Margrete’s fated love and her bonded mate is so well done—it’s impossible not to feel torn alongside her.

Quinn’s writing is lush and immersive. The world-building is stunning, and the plot twists? Oh, they are brutal in the best way possible. You’ll gasp, cry, and cheer as you follow Margrete through this final adventure. The pacing is spot-on, with no dull moments, just an unrelenting tide of action, romance, and surprises.

Whether you’re a fan of Sarah J. Maas or Danielle L. Jensen, Crown of Salt and Bone will captivate you. A breathtaking, emotionally charged conclusion to a series that has become one of my all-time favorites. Five stars aren’t enough for this masterpiece! Highly recommend to anyone who loves romantasy with heart-pounding action and vivid storytelling. 💙

I decided to read the entire trilogy as soon as I noticed this book was available based only on the description! Thank goodness I discovered this series at that time. Compared to the recommended fantasy books I've seen recently, it's very different. Having saying that, this trilogy deserves greater publicity! The final novel in the Azantian trilogy is Crown of Salt and Bone. The book includes Romantic Fantasy, Magic, Gods, 🏳️‍🌈 side characters, Mythical creatures, Secret history, and Self discovery.

It begins exactly where the second book left off. I was here to watch Margrete travel to the underworld to retrieve her boyfriend! After going through the ordeal and losing Bash, she descends into the abyss and tries all in her power to save his soul and bring him back. But in order to accomplish it, she must bargain with the god of death. To exacerbate matters by returning above and eliminating the aquatic creatures Darius fashioned? She must collaborate with Darius. the one who started this whole problem in the first place. A lot of things happen! I was sceptical, I cried, and I thought the author did a fantastic job leading this series to an amazing conclusion. I heartily thank NetGalley and City owl press for providing me the Arc of this one. It was really an awesome experience.

Thank you to City Owl Press and Katherine Quinn for letting me ARC review Crown of Salt and Bones, the final book in the Azantian trilogy.

The Azantian trilogy is one of the best romantasy series out there! I’ve devoured every book in a matter of hours since discovery book one. It’s a rollercoaster read of epic portions, full of beautiful writing and intense scenes to make your knees weak and heart flutter.

I’ve been on the journey a captivating journey with all the characters within these pages of the three books. Margete and Bash are old friends through all the twists and turns I have read across the 3 books. Their love story is enchanting – the power of love and the strength it endures is breath-taking.

If you love morally grey characters, all the goodies within these pages. I love characters who are put on cliff edges with choices for the good all or what is right for them. Difficult choices made with evocative pulls on the emotions of the read so you feel every degree of pain and strife of the characters.

No spoilers, but if you are looking for series with an ending that can hold its head up high with and still surprise you this is the one you will want to read.

What a finale!

I am going to really, really miss this series and characters. I have loved it from the beginning and this book was just an AMAZING finish to the series.

In the previous book, Bash was killed, but Margrete is NOT going to allow him to be dead. She tears a hole into the underworld with her new godly powers and goes after her man. But Helio, the god of Death, only will allow her to get him back if she works with Darius to kill off all the sea monsters he and his brother created. Bash is allowed to go with them but he is in a ghostly form and only solid at midnight, and Darius does his best to try to win her affection… although there seems to be some interest in another female on board!

This book was so fantastic with so much action, drama with the other gods trying to kill them off, fighting with the sea monsters, and love… so much love. The ending was just perfect.

I really want to say more about this book, but I do not want to spoil it for anyone. I will say that this book and the series is a DEFINITE MUST READ!!! I wholeheartedly recommend it!

4.75⭐
I picked up this trilogy because of how much I enjoyed To Kill A Shadow, and while it is still my favorite out of the 4 books of this author 's - this is a close second. The female protagonist only gets stronger in each book, and we even get a redemption arc for Darius (which I loved; the guy lived over a millennium and doesn't show emotional growth until he spends two weeks with our FMC. Talk about girl power...). This was also my first pirate fantasy, and I'm genuinely wondering why I waited so long. Katherine Quinn will get my $$ with every future book release if she keeps knocking them out of the park. My only negative feedback is that I wish we'd gotten more of Birdie/Bridget. Protecting her sister is what motivated Margaret into marrying a stranger, into enduring the box, and so much more but we rarely see her little sister after they're finally reunited. Then the time jump, and she's a woman. Maybe it's the big sister in me who knows even love, pirates, and gods wouldn't get in my way when it comes to my relationship with my sister, but I would have liked a bit more words allotted to the sisters.

I was provided an arc from Netgalley for a honest review.

I saw this book available and by the description alone I knew I wanted to read the whole trilogy and that’s just what I did! I’m so glad I found this series when I did. It’s so much more different than the current fantasy reads I’ve seen recommended. With that being said this trilogy needs more hype! Crown of Salt and Bone is the last book in the Azantian
trilogy. It starts right off from when the second book ended. Margrete is on her way to the underworld to get her man back and I was here for it! After facing the trials and losing Bash she goes the underworld to do whatever she can to retrieve his soul and bring him back. But to do that she has to make a deal with the god of death. To go back above and kill the sea monsters Darius created and to make it worse? She has to work with Darius. The very one who caused all of this mess in the first place. So much happens! I laughed, I cried, I was suspicious and the author did such a great job bring this series to an end. Everyone add to your TBR! You won’t regret it. 😜

I wanted to make sure I read the first two of this trilogy before I started this one and I absolutely DEVOURED them.

I immediately fell in love with Margrete and her strong nature, and her perseverance and determination to protect those she loves. Bash is the dashing pirate and King of Azantian, and easily became one of my favorite book boyfriends.

The third book was the perfect addition to their story, and seeing Margrete’s role going from forcibly submissive daughter to strong and powerful goddess was SO fulfilling. She is willing to do whatever it takes to save her loved ones and bargaining with the God of Death to save Bash’s soul proves how far she’s willing to go.

If you’re a fan of pirates, fantasy, enemies-to-lovers, or anything in between, you NEED to read this trilogy.

A fitting end to the trilogy.

I enjoyed this a lot. Darius had a wonderful redemption arc, and I was really glad to see that he didn’t remain a villain. And until about halfway through the book, I still wasn’t sure who the love interest was, which I think is great for trilogy with a love triangle. It kept me guessing on that front!

The only reason it’s 4 stars and not 5 is because sometimes the pacing felt off. And I would have liked more of an epilogue, to see what happened with Darius and Mila. Darius became one of my favorites in the end, so I wanted a HEA for him.

Overall I really enjoyed this trilogy! If you’re looking for a pirate romance with a really interesting magic system, I urge you to give this one a shot!

Yeah no.. this didn't work for me..
I don't like the level of obsession they have of each other. It's quite cringey and unhealthy.
And she's not really the smartest cookie in the jar, is she.. i mean.. any self respecting leader would have made better decisions.
And being a leader comes with responsibilities. Bash acknowledged his responsibilities and priorities in book 1 - all of which fled from his mind because of his cringey obsession with her in book 2 - and in book 3, she's ignoring hers too.
I understand loving your partner more than life itself. But I do not understand ignoring your responsibilities and the lives of so many other people.

Im a sucker for love stories, but this was quite cringey. Nope nope.

This series wasn't for me. I was disappointed, because I've been waiting for it for a while now.

The perfect ending to the The Azantian Trilogy. A rollercoaster ride of emotions but the pay-off is worth it. Although I am a bit sad that the journey with Margrete and Bash is over. Maybe a spin-off could happen? Like, without spoiling too much, the adventures of certain people who love to hate each other? 😉

I wrote this in my review for the first book: “Did it have some cliche elements? Sure. But you really don’t care because it’s a fun and addictive read.” And this is also true for this one. Well, for the complete trilogy actually. So if you haven’t read these books, definitely give it a try! You won’t regret it. Highly recommend!

Thank you so much @katherinequinnfor sending me an ARC of Crown of Salt and Bone!
I loved this conclusion to The Azantian Trilogy! The plot is intense and it wraps up nicely, keeping you invested at all times!
Margrete had a huge character development, especially as she begins to accept her powers and to fight without Bash! While I love their scenes together, seeing her grow as she tries to save him is also quite interesting!
Bash suffered a lot in this book, but I'm glad everything turned out alright in the end! Him and Margrete are such a cute couple and now they're stronger than ever!
I really believe fans of this trilogy will live this exciting finale!

Well this final book in the series did not disappoint.
Margrete came into her own throughout this book while not compromising who she really was deep inside. She fought tooth and Nail to get her beloved back after death took him away.
Bas lost himself before he died and found himself as he made his way back to Margrete. Their love for each other was the catalyst to change the gods themselves.
We saw hearts break and sacrifices made and the world was forever changed.
While I was glad to see how everything worked out part of it was bittersweet.
I want to thank NetGalley, Victory Editing, and Katherine Quinn for the review copy and these thoughts and opinions are my own

Crown of Salt and Bones is the epic conclusion of The Azantian Trilogy. This story was so intense, and went in so many directions. Margrete’s journey to bring Bash’s soul back from the underworld to reunite with his body was a wild trip. Meeting the Gods and their home, seeing Margrete’s small group who would follow her anywhere, and watching Darius slowly change, it was all intense. The sacrifices made really surprised me, but were wonderful. There was nonstop action leading to a satisfying ending. I love the epilogues.

This trio had been such a journey, my emotions roller-coasting through three beautifully spun tales. This last installment I don't think could have been done any better. It's rare that a series keeps the same momentum through all the books and I think that that is a real testament to how talented of a writer that Quinn is. This book was an adventure that never let up, there were so many ups and downs, so much growth with characters I loved and new characters that I loved to hate. The world building was done well and I really enjoyed the underworld and the homes of the gods that were visited. I love the love that Margret has for Bash, literally going to hell in back with out any thought. True to her nature. I agree with the ending and I think that it was written In such a great way for there to be closure and a sense of peace when finishing. Not only allowing me to thoughtfully think of feelings but also to not cause a book hangover or sense of in completion.

A huge thank you to Netgalley and the publishers for granting me an arc.

I was thrilled to receive the arc for the third and final book in the azantian trilogy.

When we left off Bash had been killed by Bay and Margrete turned into an immortal Goddess. In her rage she opens a portal to the Underworld and races in to save the soul of her beloved pirate.

I was not let down at all. Margrete and Bash's love is the kind we all dream of. Passionate and fiery. Even with Darius trying his hardest to make Margrete love him, she is loyal to the end. Nothing and no one will come in the way of the love she feels for Bash.

this book, but I was sooo wrong. I was completely
blown away not only by the unexpected twists & turns,
but by the constant amount of surprises along the way.
It kept me more intrigued than the first two books,
and that's saying something, because they were
fantatic reads, but this was FANFUCKENTASTIC!!!!
This was one of my most highly anticipated reads,
with a very satisfying conclusion.

A satisfying ending to this series.

Margrete finds herself on a quest to save Bash, while also deflecting the unwanted attention of the god Darius. Lots of adventure and action as they battle monsters and overcome hurdles to save the ones that they love.

If you enjoy pirates, gods, Magic, and romance - read this series. HEAs are the end goal, but sometimes it’s the work we put into achieving what we really want that makes us realize the fight is worth it.

I'm going to be discontinuing this series. I really wanted to like it, but I slogged through the 2nd book after just kind of liking the first one. I saw a lot of potential here, but it just got super boring and I found myself skimming then skipping larger and larger sections of text. It's not really anything special or unique, not that that's a bad thing, but it needed it since it isn't all that great.

I really enjoyed this fantasy book and it was the conclusion I was hoping for from The Azantian Trilogy.

The world building was brilliant, all the loose ends were tired up and explained and that last battle was breathtaking! I was sad for the series to be over but glad that it was a really good last book!

A huge thank you to the author for this great trilogy! I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.

I received this as an ARC and was excited to see the ending of a trilogy that will draw in the reader. I love a good anti-hero who is morally grey but redeemed. And I love a strong lead female character.

Hope to see more from this author - spin offs would be good.
