“Look into the camera, Ripley.
Tell us what happened in Harrowdean Manor.”

Serving a three-year sentence after a violent manic episode, I own this psychiatric institute and every last patient in it.

Dealing contraband to the desperate and disturbed has earned me this kingdom. To survive, I simply sacrificed my soul.

They all fear me.
Worship me.
Hate me.

But no more than the demons I barely escaped last year. They thought they’d broken me with their greed and depravity. Instead, they made me ruthless.

Now, my enemies are back.
And they’re out for blood.

Lennox wants to kill me.
Xander wants to break me.
Raine just wants to feel alive.

But in here, it’s kill or be killed. As the horrifying reality behind Harrowdean’s lies starts to surface, a bloody battle for survival begins.

Their social experiment is set to burn.
And I’m the one holding the matches.

╰┈➤KITTY KATS CRAZY ABOUT BOOKS

'𝐒I𝐍 𝐋I𝐊E T𝐇E D𝐄V𝐈L' Is the first full length enemies to lovers book within the series (Harrowdean Manor) by author J. Rose.

When I saw the sign up making the rounds, without a thought I signed up, the cover, to the blurb, throw in the author and life pretty much went on hold whilst I read inhaled this!!

✔️ Why choose
✔️ Antihero FMC
✔️ Enemies to lovers
✔️ A corrupt psych ward
✔️ Revenge trope
✔️ Mental health rep
✔️ Forced proximity

This took no time at all to get into, harder to put down. I was pulled into this roller coaster of a web this author weaved as I raced through the pages hoping these characters would come out relatively unscathed at the end of it, because some just don't out of this place at all, there's one place in this institution you never want to go, the patients whisper about it, but none never come back. We get front row seats into what exactly goes down and Ripley is here to finally tell the tale.

This starts off with Ripley sitting in front of the camera and she bares her soul and spills the beans on what went down at Harrowdean Manor. A place to the naked eye is above board, but delve deeper and it will send chills down your spin. Ripley was top dog, until three men came along and wanted to uproot her from her throne, two of these men know her well, which dates back to Priory Lane whre they were all incarcerated, the other had never met her but knew of the vengeance running through his friends veins.

Each playing their own games in order to survive the life they have been thrust into, all in the name of protecting non blood bonds. 65451226-2019570151487824-6157464638251335680-n

Sin Like The Devil by J. Rose

5/5 stars

Sin Like The Devil is my first book by J. Rose and good heavens she completely stole my heart. This book isn't for the faint of heart. It's dark, the characters go to extreme extremes all in the name of love and it has so much heart. The combination is just intoxicating and I love how true the characters felt.

I must admit I am getting sick of reverse harem books. Because a bunch out there are just written for shock effect or because it's a hype nowadays. There is no depth, it's purely written for the sex scenes and that's that.
And I am so grateful that Sin Like The Devil isn't written for the sex scenes alone. It's a heartbreaking tale about pain, traumatic pasts, it's about survival and fighting for those you love. I am definitely gonna read all the other books in this universe.

The book starts with 36-year old Ripley getting interviewed about her experiences at Harrowdean Manor. We instantly feel how much it is costing her. But it'll also be a cathartic experience. She needs to tell her story in order to expel the pain she still carries with her.

She starts her story with the words that Harrowdean Hall was her kingdom to rule. And man that got me hooked straightaway.
We find out her uncle admitted her to Harrowdean Hall, a psychiatric institution after she had a psychotic episode due to a extreme low in her bipolar disorder. Her uncle is rich and when his name and the name of his company got tainted he shipped her off. Ripley lost her parents at a young age so that is why she is in her uncle's care.

Ripley has a powerful position at Harrowdean Hall. She rules all the patients. If they need anything - cigarettes, drugs, blades or any other contraband - she supplies it. She has an understanding with one of the guards and he supplies her. Some people try to taunt her or even overthrow her. But Ripley is fierce, strong and she doesn't shy away from a fight to confirm her superiority.

Things change when rumors enter the facility that other psychiatric hospitals are under investigation and overthrown by Sabre Security. Harrowdean Hall is part of Incendia Corporation that has 6 psychiatric hospitals in total. Patients of the fallen Priory lane get transferred to the other facilities.

Ripley was previously incarcerated in Priory Lane. And she starts to dream about Holly. Her best friend who she met in Priory Lane.
The following day she meets Raine. A blind and talented violin player. They instantly feel at ease in each other's presence. I love how intuitive those two are together.
But things change quickly when she sees Lennox and later Xander. The bastards of Priory Lane she left behind. Those three guys are one unit. She hates their guts with every fibre of her being.

And that is what this book is about. This is the story of how Lennox, Xander and Ripley met before. What went wrong and where all that hatred stems from.

It's about the gruesome reality of Incendia Corporation. And what goes on in special wards of the hospitals.

This isn't just a book about hatred or shared pasts. It's about people who are, some would say, rotten to their core. They don't shy away from anything to protect those they love.
This isn't a reverse harem book without any bones. It's a book filled with agonizing pain. It's about unleashing your anger, not shying away from conventional thoughts. Just do what your anger tells you to do.

I love how different the guys are. How gentle Raine's soul is. How he cares, how he truly sees with all his other senses. And Lennox isn't just one huge bulk of anger and rage. He has the biggest heart of them all. And Xander, how closed off he is, how he eliminated his feelings. How he still has one tether to men he loves.
I love how Ripley changes them. Not in one pile of lust. She changes their inner core. She sees. She sees like Raine does.

This book is not for the faint of heart. And I loved that. I love every single sentence written down. This book has my heart and I devoured it from start to finish.

5 humongous stars from me for this stunning book! I am more than ready for the second one!!!

AMAZING AMAZING AMAZING! All I gotta say about this book. Makes me want to also re-read the Blackwood Institute Series all over again too. I absolutely loved this book and I am so thankful I got a ARC copy for review early. I could not put it down. I loved Ripley. Loved how strong of a female characters she was. Of course I loved Raine, Xander and Lennox. All of them were amazing even if we sometimes hated a certain character for what he did but eventually you will love him by the ending. I didn't to wait on writing a review now before It left my mind. You will get sucked into this story from page one, I promise you.

If you love Dark Romance, Reverse Harem (which I havent read in awhile), chaos, somewhat enemies to lovers in a way, then you will love this book. But be sure to check for trigger warnings in this one as well.

And with that ending I cant wait for Book 2 in the Harrowdean Manor Series. I am excited to see what is to come!

As always I was immediately drawn in by j rose and her stories! I loved how this one is set up! it starts off with Ripley being in an interview so basically she is telling us her story! In the Blackwood Institute trilogy you learn about the other corrupt asylums, Harrowdean Manor is one of them. I loved the overlapping time lines! This is a TRUE enemies to lovers and I ate it up! J Rose is the queen of why choose! Ripley is your badass fmc who is the top dog at Harrowdean Manor but then 3 guys come in and her castle starts to crumble because of them; Raine, Xander, and Lennox! Raine is my favorite! He’s such an interesting character! But I truly love all the guys! This one ends on a cliffhanger and I just know things are about to get crazy! I’m starting part 2 asap!

I'm the monster they made me.

I loved this book! Full stop.

It packs an absolute powder keg of emotions in the pages. If you’ve read Blackwood Institute, you are already familiar with the depravity within these institutions' walls. Harrowden Manor is no better than sanctioned torture.

Sin Like the Devil is not an easy read. The characters are not lovable, and they do some awful things in the name of hate and survival - that is everyone but Raine, our sweet little golden retriever MMC stuck in a world full of villains. But I promise you it is worth it. While not a lovable lot, you will feel for them.

This is a mixed-burn why-choose romance with a heavy emphasis on the plot.

While not ending in a true cliffhanger, the characters don't get their HEA in this book.

thank you so much for the advance copy!

(i almost rated this 4/4.5, but i can't get it out of my mind, so it's definitely a 5-star read)

i didn't want to put this book down; i loved it and had a great time reading it despite the darker themes. i didn't want it to end, and i'm so sad i have to wait for the next book to find out what happens next.

it had two timelines which was fun: the present with ripley at the interview and the past of all the events that went down at harrowdean manor (and there were a lot!). there were also a lot of complicated but loveable characters.

i haven't met many anti-hero fmcs, but i loved ripley. she's someone who had to harden herself against the world but also has a bit of a soft side, especially for raine and rae.

raine became my favourite right away. like the other characters, he has been dealt a bad hand, but he's a ray of sunshine you can't help but love (and they all do!).

xander was a very stoic character, and i wasn't sure about him for a while. he presents himself as emotionless and slightly psychotic but we get to see another side of him towards the end. i can't wait to learn more about him in the next book.

lennox took a little time to warm up to because he was very focused on getting revenge, even when the others weren't. he's determined to protect his family at all costs, and it causes a lot of issues. when his backstory is revealed, it's clear he's very similar to ripley, and i'm excited to see more of their dynamic in the next book.

i highly recommend this book and this author!

i'll be here impatiently waiting for the next book in this duet, so i'll need to fill my time with her other books. i'm both excited and scared for the next book because i need them all to get their happy ending.

- dark romance
- why choose
- enemies to lovers
-forced proximity
- anti-hero fmc & morally grey mmcs

I received an ARC for an honest review.

THIS WAS...OH MY GOOOOOD...WAUW...JUST WAUW.

This was ah-mazing. I love J Rose's writing so much. It's no secret Blackwood Institute is one of my favorite series. In fact I must admit the only reason it's not number is me having a sense of loyalty to one of the first book I've read.

I was excited to see how J Rose was gonna add another series to the BI world. This wasn't what I imagined it was gonna be. It was so much better. I'm very excited to see how it plays out as the story runs parallel with everything that happened in the original series.

J Rose always writes the most amazing characters. Raine. Raine oh my gosh I love that man. I think I loved him from his very first scene. I loved how in this we got so much Ripley and Raine and not a lot of Xander and Lennox. It made me fall for Raine while keeping me really intrigued about the other two. And then of course we finally got more from them there at the end so now I can't wait to see more.

This was simply flawless. The plot. The characters. The writing. Don't get me started on the writing, J Rose is such a talented author. Everything Ripley went through with who she was, who she was willing to become and whether or not she could live with her actions. I was there for it. I felt every emotion and I absolutely cannot wait to see what happens next.

That was a big cliffhanger so I really hope it won't be too long before the next book.

ARC kindly provided for the author in exchange for an honest review

Sin Like the Devil was NOTHING what I expected because I made the mistake of thinking that, due to the theme of the story and the place in which it takes place (another of the Incendia institutes ), this series would be the same as Blackwood Institute: The Complete Trilogy, BUT NO! J. Rose took us in a completely unexpected direction by showing us another of the resources that Incendia uses to control the institutes, giving us some of her most complicated characters to date and also the best cameos and easter eggs to enjoy.

First of all, I really liked the way the author decided to tell this story: I LOVED those little trips to the present with Ripley, how those chapters made me create my own theories about the plot and how they were the common thread to know the story behind Harrowdean Manor. Furthermore, the idea of presenting us with an anti-heroine and the wonderful execution that J. Rose's did with this part of the story made Sin Like The Devil infinitely better.

Ripley is THE main character of this story, a girl who lost her parents at an early age, who had to settle for a life without love and who has been rejected by her only family because to his mental condition. Rip ends up in the hands of Incendia Corporation after an episode that her uncle wants to hide, so as not to damage his reputation, Ripley is a quite complex character: a vulnerable and sensitive girl who has to create a tough, strong and distant facade to survive in Harrowdean Manor and avoid having her heart broken again, her situation is not easy at all because of the internal conflict that she experiences with her actions within the institute It's obvious at every turn, but so are her desires to get revenge on those who hurt her, and to stay alive. Ripley has a personality that captivated me from the beginning, I loved reading what's on her mind, how she finds refuge in her art and I really enjoyed reading the growth of her character, especially towards the end of the book with those moments she shared with Lennox and then with Rick.

Raine was the first of the boys who stole my heart, he's the youngest in this story and the newest member of the family that Lennox & Xander formed. Raine had a complicated childhood, he's a violin prodigy, a boy who has lived part of his life as an addict and has faced the consequences, he's also the one with the simplest personality of the main characters: He's not afraid to show himself vulnerable, he flirts shamelessly with Ripley from the beginning, is sweet, tender and always says what he thinks and feels, and I think that is why he was able to cross so easily the barriers that Lennox, Xander & Ripley have around them.

Lennox & Xander are a very peculiar duo who have a past in common with Ripley and seek revenge: Xander is the mastermind, a mysterious, antisocial guy who loves mathematics and carefully monitoring his prey, he's the character we know the least about in this book, BUT what we know is enough to ensure that Xander hasn't had a simple childhood either, he isolated himself from the world and learned to hide his feelings to avoid more pain. Xander is a character who breaks down throughout the story, who discovers things about himself and I loved starting to see a little bit of his true personality towards the end of the book. Lennox is the muscle, a violent guy, willing to do ANYTHING to protect those he loves and to make Ripley pay. He's a complicated character, with a painful past and who lives full of guilt, his personal story broke my heart a lot, and I loved reading him showing his love for Xander & Raine in the way he cares and take care of them. And although at first I didn't like this character at all, I have to say that I ended up loving him as much as the others, especially after reading him along with Ripley in the last chapters.

Lastly, I really enjoyed returning to this world, reading to and about some of my favorite characters, reading the new characters in Harrowdean Manor and returning to how twisted this universe that I love can be. I can't wait for the next book and I hope with all my heart that Langley joins the other boys in Rip's heart!

Like The Devil fuera infinitamente mejor.

I have no words if J Rose writes it I’m going to read it.

After reading Blackwood I knew I wanted stories for the rest of the institutes and I. Fact remember messaging her to ask if any of the other ones were books. So when this duet was announced I squealed. And let me tell you holy moly it was WORTH IT. this story was absolutely fantastic. I LOVED that ALL of the MMC’s and FMC are morally BLACK, full of trauma and just doing anything they can to survive in this absolute hell hole.

I absolutely LOVE the truly enemies to lovers aspect of this story. Ripley’s banter, no holds bar attitude and her I don’t give a fuck attitude are just chefs kiss. Her complicated relationship with each MMC Raine, Lennox, and Xander is so well done! Each relationship is completely unique, different and complex in its own right. The way J weaves the complicated and complex feelings into love/hate is perfection. I absolutely love EVERYTHING about this book. J has such a way with words. The way she writes this incredible story MAKES YOU FEEL. YOU HAVE NO CHOICE but to FEEL. I absolutely love and SQUEALED at the guest appearances from other characters.

I cannot wait for book 2 I need it now. J you are a master of your craft and I’m absolutely blown away by this book and all your books. Well done Queen.

Physically, I finished the book a few days ago. Emotionally, I'm still there, in Harrowdean, along with Ripley, Raine, Xander and Lennox. I experience their horrors with them, I worry about them, I'm scared all the time from what can happen. I don't stop thinking about them. And this only convinces me more and more that "Sin Like The Devil" is perfection - a rare diamond that I couldn't be more happy to have fallen into my hands. A book as heavy and strong as it is beautiful, making you feel the huge palette of emotions of the characters.

✨"Maybe we feel empty because we leave pieces of ourselves in everything we used to love."✨

But let me try to start from the beginning so that you understand where my excitement comes from.

From the very first page, while reading the epigraph itself, I knew that this book would be something different. "Sin Like The Devil" doesn't start like any other book. It starts as a documentary that gives you goosebumps with just its first 5 sentences. I am extremely impressed and pleased that finally this kind of atmosphere, this feeling that they evoke, I can experience in a book.

I'm amazed at how quickly the writing style captivated me and how it immediately managed to get me into the story, making me sink completely into it and forget everything else that happens around me, because it's hard for me to be so emotionally and mentally invested in a book. The constant keeping under pressure helps a lot for this, because of the horrors that happen to the characters, because the author is not afraid to hurt them and does not feel sorry for them too much. The extremely ugly, harsh and shockingly terrible things made me not stop thinking about them.

And the characters... They are so complex, so multi-layered and well-built that you can't help but want to know everything about them, you can't help but want to immerse yourself in their mind and get to know them as much as possible. What surprised me a lot, is that each of the men grabbed my interest in a different way and with different qualities, which happens to me for the first time. Usually one of them stands out from the others and I like him the most, but here I just can't choose only one.

Raine, with his sarcasm, self-confidence, vulnerability and desire to fight the situation he is in, is tearing down walls.

✨For someone who struggles to perceive the world and numbs himself to escape it, he burns so goddamn bright.✨

Lennox is brute force and deals with his anger issues in very disturbing ways, but at the same time, he makes me admire him for refusing to hide how much he cares about the people he loves and how he tries to do everything in his power for them to be okay.

✨The man who tried his damndest to kill me is breathing life into my lungs, one kiss at a time. I'm trapped in hell with an enemy, and disaster has never felt so fucking good.✨

And Xander, who is an absolute psychopath, sadist, cold, isolated and seemingly does not care about anyone or anything, but in fact, after getting to know him, I saw that he is a person who cares very much and who hides behind the mask of coldness because of what happened to him in the past.

✨I'm where I belong. Sleeping with the devil.✨

And Ripley...

✨Survival is a personal thing. Sometimes, it looks a whole lot like self-destruction.✨

Ripley is strength, struggle, sacrifice and at the same time selfishness in equal amounts at different times. She is fire, storm, emotion, vulnerability, fear, loneliness. And somehow these three manage to love the different qualities in her, bringing out different versions of her, but falling in love with each of them.

✨We all survive the aftermath of total self-destruction in our own ways.✨

I adore the scenes between each of them with her, but the ones with Raine have a special place in my heart, as he is the first person who manages to get her walls to fall and makes her show her true self. Then the others make sure that all her walls completely collapse. The relationship between them is so special and full of feelings and emotions that my head spins when I think about it.

✨That's what love is, right? A mutual agreement to destroy each other.✨

The climax is extremely tense and exceptionally strong. Enough to keep me on my feet, ready to jump at any moment to an unknown threat or simply because I can't find a place to stay.
The ending is open and given what happens in it, I can't wait for the next book! I hope it comes out faster!
~~~
Rating: 5/5⭐
✨~~~This book was provided to me by Valentine PR and J Rose for my honest opinion.~~~✨
WOW! What an insane, dark, full of all the triggers read/listen! You like enemies to lovers? Because this is the epitome of that. And mix it up with Why Choose and J. Rose has you covered in the most twisted and dark ways.
Sin Like the Devil is my first book by this author, and I'm foaming at the mouth for more. I love when an author gives us a nontraditional FMC and makes her into the antihero. Or shall I say AntiHeroine? Give me the dark and the rage and going up against authority.
Harrowdean Manor is a psychiatric institute that is filled with younger patients that seem to be pitted against each other. It's a world of angst, drugs, lies, pain and secrets. We begin the story in the present and Ripley is being interviewed about the uprising of Harrowdean Manor and what went on there 10 years prior. Then J Rose takes us back and drops us right into the days of when Ripley ruled her kingdom of the Manor. And it is DARK and filled with some intense moments.
Ripley is our heroine and she appears to run certain aspects of Harrowdean. But there are other people she has to worry about including Lennox, Xander and Raine. There is a thin line between love and hate with those men and Ripley, but she can use them for her own gain, right? We really see the electric hate that pushes boundaries between her and Lennox and Xander, but it's Raine that had me intrigued. I loved his character and how different he was. He wasn't necessarily out to get Ripley, but to feel alive. And those two together are fire. I loved their interactions and the way they were there for each other. They had an ease to their relationship, even if they lied about it. Chapter 15?! Frickin insane and dang bloody. Almost to the point that I had to look away and maybe was even holding my breath and just hoping for the best.
If you listen to the audio, it is even more intense. Sophie Hunter Scott captured Ripley and her strength and control, but also told a dang good story. And John Hartley? Bravo! 3 characters that were all very different and had some sort of hold over Ripley? He rocked it! The hate. The pain. And even the softness that Raine brought to the story amidst his own emotional pain. It was a great performance by both narrators that brought the story to bloody life.
Sin Like the Devil is an 'edge of your seat' sort of read that brings you in from the first sentence to the bitter end of the story which ends in a cliffhanger. It is an intense read with fleshed out characters and an insane plot that will have you shaking your head and rooting especially for Ripley and Raine, but also perhaps Lennox and Xander even when you think you shouldn't. This is one for all you dark romance lovers. Check those trigger warnings, because it ain't pretty. I cannot wait to continue on with this next Harrowdean book and perhaps check out Rose's backlist.
You girl have outdone yourself with this one. It’s real, raw, emotional, Ripley’s internal thoughts are so on point with her diagnosis, and I’ve never related to a character more that shares the same diagnosis. The highest of highs and the bone deep lowest of lows.
Just trying to survive that dreadful three year sentence that was really all just a cover up like Blackwood. Although we get a little insight into the other asylums owned by Incendia, Harrowdean gives Blackwood a run for its money. Except it’s worse. The little Blackwood Easter eggs and my god my favorite man popping back in for some fun.
Xander, Raine, and Lennox are all just as broken and tormented as Ripley, even if she caused majority of their damage. They have that undeniable pull to each other even when they want to strangle the other.
Chapter 13. I want to relive it over and over again. Raine is just so different from other MMCs. The darkness hasn’t completely taken him over yet but his heightened senses just make him all around a big teddy bear that’s just trying to survive one day to the next like the rest of them.
Ripley easily has become one of my favorite fmcs. She’s lost, abandoned, broken, and just trying to survive even if she has to become the devil to do so. She doesn’t give her love freely but once she does it doesn’t matter how much she may have hated you at one point, she’ll fight for your survival until the end.
That dreaded Z wing, knowing what Brooklyn and Jude went through. I still wasn’t ready for it again.
I could literally read from this interconnected world you’ve created for the rest of my life and be satisfied. No one can write mental health like J Rose and keep it so realistic yet add the writers touch to still take you out of reality and into a different world. Then again, no one can write a slow burn like her either. The tension, hatred, and angst make it all that much better when they finally relent and give in to what they really want.
And yes Ripley girl, Bipolar is a motherf*ck!ng c!nt!
Now to impatiently wait for what I already know will be an epic conclusion for Harrowdean Manor, Ripley, Raine, Xander, and Lennox. And that little surprise at the end, I had a feeling he was someone else but wasn’t completely sure.
J Rose books are my crack.
Let me start there.
This one was slower for me at first because I really wasn’t feeling all of the characters (and I’m also in a major book slump), but then I got 70% through and could. not. put. it. down. I was reading in the car waiting for the gas to pump. I was reading while cooking dinner. You know, normal shit.
J’s books will do that to a girl.
The FMC is not my favorite of the ones the author has created but I LOVE how every single one of her villainous women are all different and strong un their own way. I could tell each of her FMC’s apart, and this book is no different.
It took me a minute to understand the dynamic for the 3 MMC’s but I thiiiink I’m getting it now.
Hate to love, love to hate. Beautiful. Picasso.
I'm so so so glad to be back in the amazing universe that J Rose created. Sin Like The Devil sucked me in, just as the Blackwood Institute trilogy did. I devoured it in a day and I'm obsessed. After that ending, I can't wait until book 2 is in my grabby hands.
J Rose does dark romance like no other and I'm grateful I get to be here for it 🫶🏻
The vibes 💌:
- Reverse Harem / Why Choose
- Corruption
- Shared Universe
- Mental health rep
Thank you to J. Rose & ValentinePR to allow me to read this as an arc 🎀💐✨️
Following Riply, finally telling her story about the evil lurking in Harrowdean Manor. If you've read the blackwood Institute trilogy, you need to read this! Riply, Xander and Lennox were enemies at Park Lane, but that soon changed at Harrowdean. Xander and Lennox, along with their new friend Raine, want to knock Riply from her throne. But what happens when Harrowdeans secrets start to come to light? You'll just have to read it to find out.
The story isn't over yet, and I can't wait for book 2 to find out what happened next.
J Rose did it again 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻 well done my love, you successfully wrench my heart and bring it back together again with SLTD, like she's always done with her books. And i looooove it every second of it. Idk what to say, it's like every feeling jumbled all over, but one thing is for sure, i can't wait for next book to destroy and heal me again. I am forever grateful for J Rose for giving me the opportunity to be her ARC team. I love you heaps!!!!!!!!!!!!!
P.s i can't help but imagine Raine as Matt Murdock (Daredevil) all the time, and i love him so much!!!🫠🖤
What an absolute thrill to be back in the Blackwood universe again!!!! Ripley is no Brooklyn, but she has her own set of issues and is just as entertaining and badass, continuously keeping me on the edge of my seat! Then there are the men. Raine… Wow! I fell in love with him right away! What a unique, inspiring character! Even more fascinating are his two friends who are complete a$$holes (in the best possible way, of course). I can’t wait to learn even more about them!
If you loved the Blackwood Institute books, you are going to be OBSESSED with Harrowdean Manor!! I read over 250 books a year and have a $hitty memory, yet Blackwood has always stuck with me, saying a lot about the series! It was SOOOO much fun when several characters from Blackwood made appearances in this book! Seriously, I don’t have eloquent words to sufficiently describe how phenomenal this book was!!!
(3.5★, rounded down)
✨️all opinions are my own✨️
Xander was the only character I somewhat liked. "She'll own the world. And I'll own her." Hmm. Alright, I'll bite.
The characters feel very static and artificial. You aren't supposed to like the characters. They are all cruel, deplorable humans, but I don't even hate them for the reasons that I'm supposed to. I hate them because they whine about EVERYTHING. It's as if they can do nothing but feel bad for themselves, and it's hard for me to invest in characters like that. Don't get me wrong, the characters have been through a lot, hell even. Things that no human should ever have to go through. And I'm not saying they can't mourn for the people they have lost or the lives they used to have or were never able to have, but MY GOD.
If it's an enemies to lovers, why was Ripley submitting to a full-on makeout session with the man she supposedly hates more than anyone in the world? And only 40% into the book might I add. And his reasoning for kissing her to "punish her" or "hurt her" was the dumbest thing. Anyone in my vicinity probably audibly heard me roll my eyes. 40%!? STAND STRONG WOMAN, COME ON!!!
"They thought they'd broken me with their greed and depravity. Instead, they made me ruthless."
J. Rose has a remarkable talent for storytelling, and she’s quickly becoming one of my top authors. If you enjoyed Blackwood Institution, you’ll definitely love this book—it drew me in from the start. I was thrilled to see a continuation after the ending of Blackwood Institution, and I appreciated the glimpses of other characters like Hudson and Alyssa, especially since I was saddened by Alyssa's fate in the earlier series. This book exceeded my expectations, and I can’t wait to dive into the second one!
I also listened to the audio and was thrilled by the fantastic performances of Sophie Hunter Scoot and John Hartley! While I would love to have heard a full cast, John truly excelled at narrating the three male characters.
Ripely is now in charge of Harrowdean Hall, a position she landed after her uncle made a generous donation. She is known as the go-to person for all contraband. However, she is constantly finding herself in hot water. Trouble escalates with the arrival of new patients. These patients are not just any newcomers; they are the very individuals responsible for her best friend Holly's death at Priory Lane. She thought she had dealt with them for good, but now they seem to be very much alive and seeking revenge. As the tension mounts, Ripley must confront her past and navigate the perilous situation unfolding around her.
Raine lost his sight due to drug use in his youth and was once a famous musician until addiction took over his life. Despite his struggles, he can't help but fall for Ripely, regardless of what his best friends think.
Xander, the quiet stalker who enjoys observing others, arrives in Harrowdean with the intention of ending Ripley's life for past grievances. However, as he watches her, he comes to the unsettling realization that he has missed his favorite play toy and wants her back.
Lennox finds himself in a desperate struggle, driven by the intense need to safeguard his family at all costs. With the haunting memory of being unable to save his sister lingering, he is resolute in his determination to protect those he still holds dear. Faced with the threat of Ripley's attempts to fracture his family's unity, he stands ready to take drastic measures, even if that means resorting to killing her.
So, First of all, I am so excited that I got an arc for this amazing book and To be honest, I loved every second of this book. Sin Like The Devil is a dark Why Choose romance, set up in a mental institute Harrowdean Manor. Our Female lead, Ripley is a a Bipolar-diagnosed inmate who is serving her sentence there but she rules the Manor. Everyone is terrified of her. She is our female morally grey character, who is strong smart, and intelligent and has a little bit of heart too.
Xander, Lennox, and Raine are our male leads, who get transferred to Ripley's institute. While Raine is a new inmate, Xander and Lennox are someone Riley knew when she was in her previous Institute. Both Sides holds some serious grudge against each other. Since this is a Dark Romance, there are many trigger warnings, do check it before getting into the book. Now, Each of them are diagnosed and are fighting their own Demons internally, and when they are thrown together in the same institute, Hotness and the need for revenge rise.
The book contains Heavy topics like Drug addiction, Self-Harming, etc and none of the characters are perfect, the book is dark and all the characters have their own darkness. Keep that in mind before getting into it.
I enjoyed every second of this book, I felt so many emotions like Sadness, Anger, and Pain on how humans are treated as animals by powerful people in the world. Ripley does questionable stuff in prison, and so do our other characters because deep down they all are scared and are surviving in Harrowdean Manor. Xander, the mysterious man is one of the most intriguing grey characters ever, He doesn't have a tinge of empathy in him. He is cold-calculative, like he is made of stone and I loved his character, Lennox is a character who is full of rage and shows his emotion clearly but Xander? No.
The book is out today and is available on KU. Go check it out and Enjoy.
Ahhhhhh it feels good to be back in the deprevity of the Incindia Corporation and the horrors in which they administer.
The events at Priory Lane broke Ripley, but her transfer to Harrowdean Manor sealed the deal. After making the choice to become the villain to save her own life, Ripley has done everything in the name of the game to survive. She made Harrowdean Manor her own kingdom, with the patient lives in her hands controlling their fate. To never find herself in the whispers of the z wing. She never once second guessed her actions, but there’s always a price to pay when the past catches up with the present.
Unexpectedly faced with those she sentenced to a fate worse than death has Ripley on edge. Knowing what she did and the new peculiar situation of her kingdom with these arrivals starts to eat away at her choices. On a thin edge between the warden and her revenge, Ripley loses herself when the final straw is snapped and she can no longer control herself.
Staring into the eyes of death has an interesting way of putting things into perspective. Ending up in the z wing with her most hated enemy isn’t what she expected, nor the amount of pain, suffering and pure torture. Is the revenge and her kingdom she worked to obtain worth losing her life? Or can Ripley gain acceptance and forgiveness for her deepest regret and form an unlikely truce to overcome the evils that is Incindia Corp and make it out alive?
I guess we will have to stay tuned for the next installment of Harrowdean Manor because only the author knows what comes next.
Sin Like the Devil by J. Rose is a gripping and intensely dark RH romance that delves deep into complex psychological themes within the confines of a mental institution. Make sure you check the trigger warnings for this book before diving in, because some of the dark stuff happening here really is something else.
The setup of this one is truly unique, opening with Ripley being interviewed, sharing her harrowing journey. This duet takes place in the same universe as the author’s Blackwood Institute trilogy, another great story set in a different asylum that is as corrupt as this one, and the timelines somewhat overlap. Because of that I highly recommend to dive into that trilogy first for the full experience, even though this duet is a standalone.
Ripley stands out as an FMC, with her toughness and take no prisoners attitude, unafraid to voice her thoughts, the epitome of resilience in a truly bad situation. The male characters, Raine, Xander, and Lennox, are just as complex; their actions will stir a whole mix of emotions, from frustration to empathy, and everything in between.
As the first part of a duet, the story concludes on a cliffhanger. While it took me a moment to fully engage with this book, I found it immensely rewarding. The narrators of the audio, Sophie Hunter Scott and John Hartley, bring the characters to life with remarkable skill, infusing them with distinct personalities and emotions and making listening to the audio version a whole experience.
This duet can be read as a standalone, I would HIGHLY HIGHLY recommend reading Blackwood Institute as well.
Ripley is the FMC, a girl who lost her parents at an early age, who had to settle for a life without love and who has been rejected by her only family because to his mental condition and she ends up in the hands of Incendia Corporation.
Now, my enemies are back.
And they’re out for blood.
Lennox wants to kill me.
Xander wants to break me.
Raine just wants to feel alive.
Xander, Lennox, and Raine are our MMCs who get transferred to Ripley's institute. While Raine is a new inmate, Xander and Lennox are someone Riley knew when she was in her previous Institute.
I love Raine, the youngest and the newest one. Xander is having a mysterious aura and antisocial kind of man. Lennox whereas thinks from the muscles and is violent kind of man.
I really like the book. TBH this is far beyond my imagination. It was twisted and dark but you won't be able to put it down. That's guaranteed. 🖤🖤
I loved every bit of it. It will keep you on your toes or may be you will have toe curling experiences.
I loved how Ripley (Morally grey FMC) was written. She was like a puff with multiple layers and each layer unfurl something unique about her.
The author has represented mental health so beautifully. It was really amazing.
Ripleys had a tough life and unfortunately dealt a crappy hand. She thought she could escape her past and rewrite a new life at Harrowdean Manor with her on top, but she’ll quickly learn that her demons have followed her.
After reading the Blackwood Institute, I am obsessed with J. Rose and her writing. This story is a dual timeline where it’ll take place around the same time as Blackwood did, but just at another institution and then present day. First off, I just wanna say Ripley is freaken badass. The quiet awkward girl who first arrived at Priory Lane is nowhere to be found when she arrives at Harrowdean. As for the guys, I absolutely loved Raine from the start. The way he connected with Rip and knew what she needed from him … ugh 🥹 it was the best. I have to admit Xander and Lennox had me questioning them for like 75% of this book, but it’s safe to say by the end they grew on me too. Everyone has their own story to tell and scars to deal with, but they’ll just have to fight through it all if they want to make it out of Harrowdean Manor alive.
Sin Like The Devil is the first book in the Harrowdean Manor Duet. It is a multi POV, dark, why choose, enemies to lovers romance that takes place in a “psychiatric hospital” and has TW’s that should be heeded. This book does end in a cliffhanger, you have been warned.
This story is unputdownable. It’s dark, intriguing, emotional, and will have you enthralled from the start. I loved Ripley, she is a strong and feisty FMC, she is the Queen of Harrowdean Manor and Lennox, Xander, and Raine want her crown.
These men will stop at nothing to get what they want, and I loved them for it. But be forewarned, these are not good men hi. They are scarred and broken. They hurt, so they hurt others, including, and maybe most of all, those they care about.
The writing, pace, and flow of this story are fantastic, as are the characters, plot, storytelling, character development, relationship development, and world building. If you love ‘em dark and disturbing, then I’d highly recommend this book.
