The Tragedy of Vietnam is a brief and accessible text that provides comprehensive coverage of the causes and consequences of the Vietnam War. The book provides extensive background on the Vietnam War, the relevant history of Southeast Asia and the consequences of the Vietnam conflict on the region. Author Patrick Hearden examines the key decisions and questions surroudning the tragic American entanglement in Vietnam, providing readers with a fascinating discussion of why the United States became involved in this war and why this involvement persisted for nearly a quarter of a century. This book covers the social, economic, ideological, diplomatic and military aspects of the Vietnam War.
The Tragedy of Vietnam provides a brief history of Vietnam with "history repeats itself" information and focuses on post-WWII to present day Vietnam. Tightly written, the book is filled with facts about America's involvement. My 2 frustrations with the book were that I would have liked more maps showing places mentioned in each chapter and a list of acronyms.
let me explain why I only gave this 1 star. I am a freshman in high school, but I am also taking college classes at a community college near me. In my college class I was instructed to read this and write an argumentative essay. So coming from a high schoolers perspective this book was a) indeed very informative b) also very boring in my opinion c) I'm going to go and cry now so I'll see you all after my final.
This book definitely lives up to its name. I was incredibly disturbed at many points and it only bolstered my resolve to advocate a better way because as usual there was nothing redemptive about this war.
Read this for school. So much more outrageous than I ever knew. In fact, I found it hard to believe. I have the fourth edition and it includes sources documents after each chapter, really makes it hard to argue.
