Shameful Regret #2

Make My Heart Beat

Rate this book
Before Lynae, my heart was just sitting lifeless in my chest. I wasn't living. I've hidden away the shame and the regret for so long, that I never thought anyone could break through. She did that, and so much more.

I need Lynae more than I need air to breathe. She is everything to me. The night Lynae walked into my life, I knew that I would never be the same. My heart started to feel again.

Now that I've pushed her away, the walls that I had built stand to destroy us. I have to get her back. I can't live without her.

She is the one thing in this world that can make my heart beat.

In a heartbeat, everything can change, and nobody realizes that more than Connor Reeves. In a drunken outburst, he learns that words have power, and that they can’t be taken back no matter how much he wants them to be. Accidents happen, but it’s the hurt caused before the incident that leaves Lynae broken, and Connor wondering if he’ll ever get his heart back.

Make My Heart Beat continues Connor and Lynae’s story from In A Heartbeat. As Book 2 begins, the fallout from Connor’s wrathful words threatens everything good in his life. Lynae doesn’t know if she can forgive him, which causes a strain as well as an adjustment in her relationships with the other members of Shameful Regret. Connor’s lost the woman he loves…the woman he always thought was too good for him, and he doesn’t know how to win her back. He’s always felt so undeserving when it comes to love, and his demons threaten to consume him even more now that the person who grounded him is no longer there to keep them at bay. Connor allowed his anger and torment to control his actions, so he has no one to blame but himself for no longer having Lynae in his life, but as a reader, I can’t help but feel sorry for him. He has a tragic past that he’s never dealt with, and the guilt and shame he feels cannot be easily overcome because he closes himself off and refuses to move past the accident. Connor needs Lynae to breathe…to live…to let go, but it’s not an easy journey to get his heart back. But in order to fix his relationship, he needs to fix himself first, and that’s as big of a challenge as getting Lynae’s forgiveness.

Lynae finally gives her heart to someone after so many years of isolation, and he turns around and breaks it after promising he wouldn’t. I can’t blame her for being cautious. She can’t truly understand the demons Connor fights on a daily basis because he won’t share his past with her…he won’t open up. She can’t be in a relationship where she’s the only one who gives herself 100% and gets nothing in return. While she’s working through her own tragic experience, Connor’s not; the only way Connor will make any headway with Lynae is if he truly lets her see every part of him – the real him underneath the anger and darkness.

At the end of In A Heartbeat, I wanted Connor’s voice desperately. I needed to understand where he was coming from; what he feared in sharing his past; why he ran from his problems with the help of alcohol. When I saw that Make My Heart Beat was written in both Lynae and Connor’s perspective, I knew I would get my answers. Being inside Connor’s head is a heartbreaking experience. To witness his torment and anguish over what he did to Lynae is difficult but necessary. Not one time does Connor try to place the blame on someone else, which showed me early on that even though he thinks he’s no good and undeserving of love, it’s definitely not the case. I have to admit, even though I understood Lynae’s reluctance in letting Connor back in, her actions irritated me a bit. I don’t think she really saw how much he needed her in order to let go of a past that consumed him.

Connor and Lynae’s story is one of healing, forgiveness, and redemption. It’s a testament to what happens when people stop running from their problems and allow people to help open them up and destroy the demons that control them. Liz King does a fantastic job of illustrating Connor and Lynae’s growth as individuals as well as a couple with strong character development. The supporting characters also play a key role in reuniting the couple as well as keeping them apart, and each and every one of them is realistically portrayed. Make My Heart Beat is an emotional read that will tear down readers’ hearts and emotions but then slowly build them back up as the characters begin to heal. It’s the kind of read that will allow readers to experience and understand everything the characters go through because the storyline is well paced and developed. I hope to get more insights into Connor and Lynae’s life together in future books, and I can’t wait to see what happens with the other members of Shameful Regret as well as Lynae’s friends.

Oh what to say about this book?
Lets start with a little something I need to get of my chest about the author!! She is mean! I mean seriously making my Connor go through the stuff that he did...only a mean author type person would do that!
Ok now the story that I read...damn it was good! I was kinda left open mouthed at the end of book one, book hangover galore! So I needed this book and I wasnt very patient about it. Luckily I got a copy from the author a little early, yes I could have kissed her face!
This book was so filled with emotion I wasn't sure if I would get through it. The relationship between Connor and Lynae was just...ugh! I know thats not very descriptive but without using lots of swear words its the best I can do. I spent the whole story screaming at Connor to open up and screaming at Lynae to forgive him and take him back! But the moments the did come together just made me weep, to see Connor breaking from the inside was heartbreaking. Aaaaannnndddddd then the whole thing with...a friend just left me wanting to throw my kindle at a wall! Nope..not telling you what friend and what the thing was...you will just have to read it.
The characters were more developed in this book and you could feel the progression in the writing this time. It was a more rounded story and the feelings a lot more intense. I loved the first book but this time it was just better! So if you liked the first book you will adore this book!
I will close this review by saying...I still think the author is mean...but she writes a damn good book!

Glenna's five crying a river stars for Make My Heart Beat.
This book takes place after that make ya growl cliffhanger from In A Heartbeat. So many emotions are experienced while reading this, I hope you have tissues ready, because in this book you get inside of Connor's head and get to see and feel how much he struggles with his past and the secret that haunts him. We also get back inside Lynae's head and see her become stronger and able to come to terms with life's best laid plans for her.
I can't go into too much detail without giving the book away but , friendships and loyalties are tested leaving you shaking your kindle wondering how things will come out on the other side. I love the dynamic between all the characters and would love to be a fly on the wall in the garage during their shenanigans. I love John, every girl needs a dad like him! Friendship, life and love all wrapped up in a great book, as sad as I am to see Connor and Lynae's story end, I can't wait to see what the future holds for the rest of the boys from Shameful Regret and hope we see more of Connor, Lynae and jellybean!

This is a new adult contemporary romance. Book two in the Shameful Regret series. I recommend everyone to read, In A Heartbeat, the first book to get the full story. This is about Lynae and Conner, Liz divides them into chapters so you get the point of view from each character. I really enjoyed this book, it has so many twists and turns and took me through so many emotions. I wanted to finish the book but hated myself when I was done, yes I want more. I appreciated that Lynae wanted to stand her ground, and is a daddy's girl. I also understood Connors pain.

This book is about Connor and Lynae, chapter one starts right where In a Heartbeat leaves off. Both have personal issues, that they need to deal with. Conner blames himself for a tragic personal experience. Connor has a hard time with relationships, well he did until Lynae stole his heart. Now he has to learn to trust her, open up to her as she has him. Lynae has to understand when to stop running away from her problems. They also need to learn to lean on each other. Can Connor learn to open up before he loses her.... completely? Can Lynae accept whatever Connor throws her way? Can they survive? Only time will tell, their future depends on their actions now.

Favorite passages:

"I miss you everyday more and more." <3

"Sure, blondie is hot, but she pales in comparison to the woman that I need to get closer to like I need my next breath."
"Swoosh, swoosh, swoosh, swoosh."
"She's gonna need you, even if she doesn't know it right now."
"I don't care if I have to walk through Hell and back again, I will get my family back."
"He smells like my Daddy."
"She could take any situation and tell you exactly what to do or say."
"I wanted to find out what kind of man was stealing the heart of my world."
"It's the same look I had while I was holding Sara's hand when she was dying."
"I told him he needs to learn to dance like Channing if he plans on keeping me satisfied."
"The emptiness inside was once filled by your heart."
"Jellybean? What in the hell is he talking about?"
"I know you do Nae-Nae, I'm damn lovable."
"I didn't know it was possible to have so much love in my heart before that moment."
"I didn't get a chance to say goodbye to her."
"She just has to let her mind catch up to her heart."
"She is my angel in the darkness."

Make my heart beat is the second book in Liz King’s Shameful Regret series; it picks up right where the first book left off. This book still has the same narrative style as the first with you being able to get in heads of both Connor and Lynae but this is more Connors’s story than anything. Connor is a tattooed, pierced rocker by night and a mechanic by day but boy oh boy does this man love hard. He is fighting some deep seeded demons regarding his sister, the first book touches upon this but this time we get the full heartbreaking, gut wrenching story.
Trying to keep the demons at bay with alcohol has costed him everything he had with Lynae including the future family that they are now starting. He has to walk through hell while trying to win Lynae’s heart back. The journey had me bawling my eyes out and screaming at my kindle while at the same time laughing along with all the gang from Shameful Regret.
Liz King has done a brilliant job once again at making me fall even more in love with every single character, while having me want to kick them in the a$$ at the same time. This series is a true love story that isn’t all sunshine and rainbows but shows the love and drive that has to go into a relationship, while coming out the other side better people for it. I’m pretty sure that Miss.King should take out stock in Kleenex or at least offer a free box with each book..lol
I loved every minute of this journey with Connor, Lynae and the rest of the crew. I hope that she continues to share their lives with us because I have a feeling there is so much more to learn about them all!

Wow- at the end of book one I was in tears and jaw was on the floor. This book picks up a few moments before book 1 ends- but now we have Connor’s POV. I love dual POV and having his thoughts rounds out their story.

Even after apologizing-NUMEROUS times- Connor has a lot of work to do. He’s got as much baggage as Lynae, and he’s been using one bad coping mechanism after another to forget,or at least to keep most of the pain at bay. If he wants to stay with Lynae, really be there and be the man she deserves he’s going to have to put in some serious work. Letting her in, to the deep dark recesses of his mind and heart may prove to be too much.

Fortunately they both have incredible support systems, having created a family with their close friends. Friends that are truly rooting for both of them, and have their best interests at heart- even if they act like a$$es- looking at you Sly and Seth!

Even with all of the angst, of which there is in buckets and buckets, there are so many incredibly sweet and tender moments. Moments that take your breath away and moments that have you laughing out loud.

With a tie that will never break Connor and Lynae have to take that last step to be together, work it out together and love. But will that decision be enough? A phenomenal followup!

I can’t say enough about this book!

I LOVED IT! It was just a perfect continuation to Lynae and Connor´s story. Once again‚ their story grabbed my attention from the beginning. No surprise there ´cause the first book finished with the major cliffhanger and I could not escape being hooked to see what will happen. I just had to devour it in one sitting.

Liz did tremendous job with this novel. She made me feel the same emotions that the characters were going through. It was all very well-balanced: the character development‚ the storytelling‚ romance‚ heat‚ angst and all of this novel a captivating read.

A really good rock star story that did not left me disappointed.

I look forward to reading more by her.

I cant tell you how much this book ripped my heart out!!! I swear I went through EVERY emotion possible while reading this. I loved Liz and hated her guts at the same time lol.

I won't do a review with spoilers, I despise them.

Thank god for redeeming qualities in characters...eh hem, Sly....that is all on that.

I cant get enough of the snarky boys of Shameful Regret. The banter between these boys makes me laugh every time I read it. I love the sexy, smartass, snark. :)

Connor and Lynae- DEEP BREATH FOLKS!!!!

Needless to say, Ive read this book 3 times already.....

Book 3 yet????

Make sure you read In A Heartbeat before you read this one. This is another great book by this author. I ended up reading this in one sitting as I was glued to it.

After the cliffhanger of book one I was super excited to read this book. I wasn't disappointed. As much as I loved book one I enjoyed this even more. Connor is fantastic. He loves Lynae so much. Secrets need to be told. Trust needs to be gained.

So glad I could breath after finishing this book. So happy to see that the author hasn't finished with this series. Great praise to the author for these two great books. I'll certainly be recommending them!!

Make My Heart Beat is the second book in the Shameful Regret Series and I am so so happy to finally get the conclusion of Lynae and Connor’s story. I liked this story even better than the first book in this series, In A Heartbeat. I don’t know if it was the anticipation or just the culmination of so much drama that came to a head at the end of the last book, but I really enjoyed all of the angst in this one and how it all played out. Another reason that I might have loved it just a bit more than the first is that this book had dual point of view and I am a really big fan of that. It certainly made a difference hearing and seeing things from Connor’s point of view.

Lynae and Connor were left with some serious problems and obstacles at the end of In A Heartbeat. The biggest being that Lynae does not feel she can trust Connor because he won’t open up to her about whatever problems he is having. I really felt for these two troubled people. Honestly, I was pulling hard for Connor this entire book, even though I know he made some pretty terrible mistakes where Lynae is concerned. These two are both just a hot mess, and I absolutely loved it. No one loves drama more than me and Connor and Lynae are just one dramatic event after the next.

OK, a few things here that I need to say. In A Heartbeat was really great but Make My Heart Beat was even better. I think that it flowed better and the story kept my attention the entire time. I literally read it in one sitting. I feel like Liz’s writing and presentation of her stories is improving with each book. Also, I really just love ALL of her characters. I am most certainly excited for Sly’s book. He is such a macho hot head that I just know he is going to deliver the drama and the steamy sex! Whew, I know what is coming Sly. and I am definitely looking forward to it! But, I really feel like I need to talk about Seth for a minute. He really stood out in this book and I am head over heels for this man. I am DYING for his book. I really very much need his happily-ever-after right this moment. I do not know why but he just stole my heart, and I need to know more about him right now! This series is coming together so nicely. My love and attachment to the characters is growing every book and I think that Liz may need to quit her full time job so that she can write and feed my Shameful Regret addiction.

This is book two in the Shameful Regret Series.
Yes book one needs to be read first.
This is the continuing story of Lynae and Connor.
I gave this book 5 stars.

If you didn't love Connor in the last book. You're going to love him in this one! This story is just what I needed after reading the first book! I was left with a wow at the end of book one and luckily book 2 is already out and I just had to switch over.

Connor is damaged .. we see this in book one but the focus is more on Lynae then it is on him. But in this book you get to see why he is hurting the way he does. And he doesn't take his own advice and share how he feels he keeps it all bottled up inside. Like a time bomb waiting to explode!!! Boy does he explode! The casualties are one beautiful healing woman that he loves with his whole heart. He does something so stupid and in this book he gets to try and fix it. But Lynae is a stubborn girl and she is not easy to forgive. She remembers everything that he said to her. And though she is in pain, and although she is in love. She is not sure that she will ever be able to forgive him. What will happen if she can't ? Can Connor live without her? Can he finally come clean with his past and let her in so she doesn't walk away?

LOVED this story!! I was so mad at what Connor did and what he said! But you understand why he did it! All the same I understood why Lynae does what she does. It is hard to forgive someone that you have put all your trust in and hope only to be let down by words spoken right from their mouth. I felt so bad for him, I wanted to scream for him and tell her just forgive him!! But I think the things that happened made them stronger, made their love stronger. They have overcome so many things to be together and that will make them appreciate the little things that life is going to give them. Appreciate each other and their love. Thank you for this beautiful story! <3 I can't wait to read about Sly!!! <3

WOW! There seems to be a lot going on in this book. In a very good way. It’s got an amazing build up where the characters build and you try to figure out how it’s all going to intertwine. It’s sooooo good!

Tilly is really just a now beautiful dork at heart. She was a nerdy dork during high school and although she came into her own and is now a beautiful woman….she still feels like that same nerdy dork. Tilly owns her own photography business, which was a given since she’s always had a camera in front of her face. She has one favorite high school memory….John kissing her at a party. She had to leave that school right after that and never saw him again. Until now.

Oz (John) is installing some security at a home where he vaguely recognizes the name but can’t place it. He’s dealing with a guy that’s friends with another guy…etc. Word of mouth is great advertising. Then he see’s her. His Tilly. He’s thought of her many many times over the past ten years and she’s seriously still very beautiful. He waits no more than about 10 minutes before asking her out.

The problem is that Tilly doesn’t do relationships and she knows that John will definately be a relationship. Will she go out with him? Can she finally lower the walls around her heart just a little to see if something can become more for her?

The reason for the security is that she’s had someone break into her home. Her brother, Jeff, is overseeing the installation wanting the best. Someone is desperate to make sure her pictures are destroyed. To what ends will they make this happen? Can she be protected fully? Is anything a guarantee?

I loved this book! It’s a mystery and romance all rolled into one. With HOT guys too boot!! Tilly’s innocence and John’s Alpha Male Sweet Protectiveness…..well they are perfect for each other.

I didn’t realize that there was a book 1, so I would consider this a standalone. I can normally tell within the first 10%! It’s a pet peeve of mine to not read books in order. I can tell you that I'll be reading that book too!!! This one is so good!! Thank you Harper Bentley for such a wonderful series!!

Make My Heart Beat is the sequel to In a Heartbeat and picks up where Ms. King left us dangling over the edge of the cliff. This time around, we get more of the story from Connor’s point of view as he has to learn to reconcile his guilt from his past to move forward in his future with Lynae, assuming she will let him after his egregious missteps.

Connor is definitely fighting an uphill battle as he attempts to put right what he set ablaze so spectacularly in book one. Not only does have to fix his relationship with Lynae, he also has to fix his relationship with his bandmates (who feel bad that they believed him and contributed to the fall-out), Lynae’s friends (who want to castrate and kill him, in that order), and Lynae’s father (who Connor assumes knows how to kill him and get away with it as he’s a cop). Even though his friends, Lynae’s father, and Gabbi (one of Lynae’s friends) tell him that he needs to come clean to Lynae about why he behaved the way he did and let her know his secret, he does his to avoid doing so and spends a good part of the book unable to figure out why she won’t forgive him when she says she still loves him. At times, I found myself shaking my head as he continued to shut her out, doing to her the very thing she did to him and then being surprised when she wouldn’t take him back. Fortunately, Connor finally got his act together and he and Lynae must figure out how to move forward as a family. Of course, this presents a whole of new problems that must be dealt with.

I enjoyed Make My Heart Beat as much as I enjoyed In a Heartbeat. Ms. King has created a great cast of characters and I loved getting to know Connor’s bandmates even better. I appreciated getting Connor’s POV during flashback scenes and felt it enriched the experience of the two books. I am looking forward to the next book in the series.

I received a complimentary copy of the book in exchange for an honest review.

I feel like I've been waiting forever for this book, but I guess that's what it's like when you are left on a cliff of a really good book. When we last were with Lynae & Conner she had just fallen down the stair and we found out she was pregnant....argh how can that be the end. What I loved is how this book just picked right up. It was like we never even ended. I always worry when we are left on cliffs, because it can either start right away or time can elapse, both has it's ups and downs but this one, was a fantastic start. Connor is fighting his own demons and at this point we still don't know what they are. This book was just packed with drama. The characters were so argh, it was killing me. I loved them together and I wanted their HEA so bad it was hard to see that not happening. It's not like oh, second book all is well again, no they both had to fight to come back together and what a struggle that was. It was a great book and the secondary characters are fantastic as usual. This series has been great, I can't wait to see what is to come next. I hope we continue with keeping the secondaries really involved. Especially since I love Lynae & Connor I want to see more of them. This was a really good ending considering how we were left last time :)
Enjoy!

I continue to be impressed by Liz King's work in this second book in the Shameful Regret series. I love the cast of characters she creates, the secondary characters holding their own and being just as entertaining and integral to the story as the main characters. Her success with doing this reminds me so much of what Abbi Glines achieves in her series. It's truly an amazing accomplishment that makes for entertaining reading and opens the door for future books around the secondary characters, which I understand is something the author is already working on. I look forward to reading more from Liz King.

Make My Heart Beat is a great continuation to the Shameful Regret series. This one gives us even more Connor (which I love) and continues to be an emotional read. It's NOT to be read as a standalone. You need to read In A Heart Beat first to get a true understanding and appreciation of what's going on.
Lynae learns what Connor has been hiding, plus a couple of other well kept secrets from him and their friends. Healing is done, a lot of it and many more new relationships lead into beautiful things.
A great HEA for these two! I'm happy to have gotten to experience such an emotional journey and look forward to this authors future works.

A 3.5 rounded to 4 rating.

I read this one because it was in the Fever anthology. I will say it is probably best if you read the first book first. Since I'm assuming it picks up at the cliffhanger of the last, at least that was what it felt like. That being said it contained your usual relationship drama that had a lot of back story I was missing (as I didn't read the first one). I still liked the characters and overall storyline. Basically, make sure you read book one before this book, and I'm sure it will be a much more enjoyable experience.

Liz King was nice enough to send me an ARC copy of this book for my long flight this past weekend. I am so glad she allowed me the privilege to read this because my five hour flight went by so fast. I felt like I was in Connor and Lynae's world. I love that this book has both Lynae and Connor's point of view. It allows us to get inside into both sides. I don't want to give too much away on this book but just know that its a must read and Connor is just amazing!

Perfect ending to Lynae & Connor's story. Loved it even though l was so frustrated with both Lynae & Connor. I wanted her to forgive him & him to let her in. Thank God that finally happened. I really love all the characters in this book. Another very emotional book with laughter, tears, some steam & lots of times l wanted to chuck my iPad. Well done Liz, you have another winner with this book. Can't wait to read two hearts beating. What a great series.......

Awesome series! Simply Amazing! Family is not about the blood you share but the love and support you share. I can't believe how cruel Connor's family is to him. Thank God for Lynae's father, John and the guys in the band, Shameful Regret or Connor would have had to face all that guilt all by himself. So glad that Connor and Lynae realize that their love is worth fighting for! Nicely Done.
