Rate this book
This is the story of a sixteen-year-old American girl who is orphaned when her father dies and she is sent to live with her English uncle. Unfortunately he falls out of favor with the king and is killed. This is where she meets Adrien who saves her from a dire fate by taking her to Holland to live with her mother’s sisters. They sail to Java on the same ship, but Rommel and Adrien are fated to be torn apart again and again. She has only her courage and her beauty to keep her alive—and her impossible love for Adrien. The beautifully painted yet cheesy cover drew me in but the story was a lot of fun too. This isn't your slow simmering epic of a sheltered virgin and her love interest hate sexing around the world, complete with lush descriptions of elite palaces, locales and luxurious wardrobes. It's much more of a fast paced, frothy east asia tropics adventure story with a bit of romance thrown in.

The story takes off running right from the start as both the hero and heroine are forced to be rebels to the English empire because of a treason arrest gone wrong and after that misfortune are victim to one tragic set of circumstances after another. This leaves them separated about 80% of the time and very little of their relationship is allowed to develop outside of lingering memories, but on the upside their chemistry when they are together is positive and open. The hero isn't hateful and outside of a brief rapey moment, genuinely cares about the heroine and is a sensitive person so this is a good choice if you want a bodice ripper that doesn't have an over the top alpha nutcase.

Due to the separation from any cultural or environmental norms and constant danger testing the wits and survival of the female protagonist, you really come to respect her for her courageousness, inner strength and compassion for other victims of cirumstance. She isn't terribly developed in such a rushed story, but how she deals with relentless misfortune and stress is commendable and it makes it easy to care about what happens to her. It's also very easy to sympathize with the extreme cultural dissonance she is subjected to. There are few delicate balls, tea parties and the like in this ripper. It's more sweaty jungles, violent natives, lecherous old men, damp rag dresses, scarce food, sickness, natural disaster, irrational culture and massacre.

After all the exciting yet awful shit they have to endure, it's easy to cheer for their final moment of reuniting and comfort.
