Rate this book

Haruki Murakami (村上春樹) is a Japanese writer. His novels, essays, and short stories have been best-sellers in Japan and internationally, with his work translated into 50 languages and having sold millions of copies outside Japan. He has received numerous awards for his work, including the Gunzo Prize for New Writers, the World Fantasy Award, the Tanizaki Prize, Yomiuri Prize for Literature, the Frank O'Connor International Short Story Award, the Noma Literary Prize, the Franz Kafka Prize, the Kiriyama Prize for Fiction, the Goodreads Choice Awards for Best Fiction, the Jerusalem Prize, and the Princess of Asturias Awards.
Growing up in Ashiya, near Kobe before moving to Tokyo to attend Waseda University, he published his first novel Hear the Wind Sing (1979) after working as the owner of a small jazz bar for seven years. His notable works include the novels Norwegian Wood (1987), The Wind-Up Bird Chronicle (1994–95), Kafka on the Shore (2002) and 1Q84 (2009–10); the last was ranked as the best work of Japan's Heisei era (1989–2019) by the national newspaper Asahi Shimbun's survey of literary experts. His work spans genres including science fiction, fantasy, and crime fiction, and has become known for his use of magical realist elements. His official website cites Raymond Chandler, Kurt Vonnegut and Richard Brautigan as key inspirations to his work, while Murakami himself has named Kazuo Ishiguro, Cormac McCarthy and Dag Solstad as his favourite currently active writers. Murakami has also published five short story collections, including First Person Singular (2020), and non-fiction works including Underground (1997), an oral history of the Tokyo subway sarin attack, and What I Talk About When I Talk About Running (2007), a memoir about his experience as a long distance runner.
His fiction has polarized literary critics and the reading public. He has sometimes been criticised by Japan's literary establishment as un-Japanese, leading to Murakami's recalling that he was a "black sheep in the Japanese literary world". Meanwhile, Murakami has been described by Gary Fisketjon, the editor of Murakami's collection The Elephant Vanishes (1993), as a "truly extraordinary writer", while Steven Poole of The Guardian praised Murakami as "among the world's greatest living novelists" for his oeuvre.

Fantastic--

I think I understood it better than the first time, but then by the end, I totally lost the thread of my interpretation. Murakami recommends us to read this more than once to "understand" it, so it really was good reading it again, this time in the original Japanese. I've realized I missed so much the first time around, specifically the world of "metaphors" Murakami creates and brings to life in his fictional world.

The story includes so many intellectual references that are not just frills but are relevant to the story: philosophy (Hegel, maybe a bit of Nietzsche), western literature (Sophocles, Shakespeare, Kafka), Japanese literature (The Tale of Genji, Tales of Moonlight and the Rain, Souseki Natsume), and others that seem to point toward "correct" solutions of the story.

Definitely an awesome read and my favorite Murakami work.

English title: Kafka on the Shore

I liked that the tone of this novel was surreal. In terms of art, it was a combination of Renoir and Chagal. This was my First Murakami novel, and I'm glad I read this after Absolutely on Music. Absolutely on Music has given me some insights of him as a writer and it was a plus when reading this novel. All in all, I'm willing to read more his works. Now 1Q84...

It’s my second time reading this book. It is truly like having a dream while reading: confused and a bit tiresome after half way through. The story refers some Greek mythologies, however, As far as I am concerned, those are quite remote to East Asians’ mentality: the destructive tendency to father( paternal authorities ) is very rare in East Asian cultures.
While concurrently reading Mr. Murakami ‘s travel essay book, which includes his stay in Greece(He’s stayed in Greece for one month in 1987),I just cannot help assuming he must be very interested in Greek civilization. And probably he had the idea of writing this book back then.

I still don't like sex scenes in the book; I don't think Hoshino's sex with a prostitute and Tamura's incest are necessary in the story. Yet, Tamura's journey in pursuit of his self involves the imaginative, magnificent world that nobody could expect, that no other writer can create.
Honestly, I don't like young male characters, especially Tamura and Hoshino, who seem to me narcissistic in a way, more centered on self and own desires. But I enjoyed the story anyway.

大部分沒有看懂, but the last quote always stops my heart for a second.

I've read two Murakami novels and both of them simply blew me away. He's just about my favorite author at this time. If you know of anyone writing stuff like this, I'd love to know about it.

The eponymous Tamura Kafka may be only 15 years old, but he's actually the same disaffected thirtysomething protagonist we see in much of Murakami's fiction. He navigates the same absurd world, struggles with the same insecurities, and pursues the same process of self realization. The more this pattern repeats, the less intriguingly bizarre Murakami's world becomes.

Nonetheless, Murakami had a lot of interesting material in this novel, including a recasting of the Oedipus drama and a prolonged flirtation with the idea of the metaphor. But neither of these amounted to much more than quasi-intellectual pastiche. That is to say, where's the beef?

My decision to continue reading this 1,000 page whopper rested mainly on the substory concerning the adventures of Hoshino and Nakata -- the former a young, rough-talking truck driver; the latter a heartbreakingly polite old man who can't read or write, but can converse with cats and make leeches fall from the sky. It's the sort of writing that makes Murakami worthy of his reputation, not simply a drab rehashing of his previous themes.

The amazing fantastic story is like watching a dream intertwined with the reality world.

I loved the description of the tiny daily things, nothing special but interesting, you can image and feel every details just happened, very Murakami style.
The journey part of Nakata with Hoshino was lovely.

Incredible murders, cats talking, sex, across and disappeared. Also the character Johnny Walker and Harland David Sanders.
Special characteristics of every character are charming to me. Very unique.
You could find some parts of each characters they are so close to you. I felt really understanding the feelings and similar to them. Alone and tough.

There’re so many mysteries you kept reading and waiting for the results, but eventually you couldn’t find out the answers at all, just like almost Murakami novels. I think even I read it again and again,I’ll never understand the story. I really enjoyed this book a lot.

I'm not sure what my overall opinion is-- perhaps I'm still processing; maybe I need to read someone else's review... But it was definitely an inspired page-turner, and I was reveling in the story. I usually don't take myself to dinner or drinks alone, armed only with a book, and with this one I was... and then when it came time to wrap things up.. it got really freaking weird.. and then... anti-climactic. Maybe in retrospect I won't feel that way about it but for now I've got that definite feeling that I was being promised SOMETHING and it didn't entirely deliver. Murakami though, is still an amazing writer.

An old man that can talk to cats and a young boy with the maturity of an adult. The first one runs away from a shocking murder, the second from a disturbing prophecy. I don't know yet where it goes... but it enraptured my attention completely. Murakami is definitely one of the most interesting modern authors.

the american version of this book has a far better rating than the japanese version...i've never read murakami in english before, but i doubt his work improves upon translation...

reading "kafka," i realize that i find his books irresistable, but not really likable. i definitely do not like his characters.

it started off so well. curious and strange and funny. and then it spiraled down into this dense philosophical reflection that was much too dense and abstract for my liking. worth the read simply because it's so different, but hard.

Pretty fantastic book. But if you're looking to get your socks knocked off by an ending to make the hours and hours of this long novel worth it, you'll be disappointed. Savor each page alone for what it is and you'll love it.

a very abstract storyline, quite some words of wisdom, abundant sex scenes as usual. And with some rather persuasive language, it tells u "it's ok to quit ur life and die" -- so better not read it when u'r too down.

I don't understand the hype about this book, but if you read this at least you could say you stepped into Murakami-world. The plotline was everywhere, I had no idea where or how one plotline is connected to another, but maybe that's the charm about his books...
