What do you do when you want a soft life, to be a kept woman, only to end up making a baby with a deadbeat that won’t get off his 🍑 to provide?! You do what needs to be done and make a way for you and your baby! We don’t all wanna be independent 😩 some of us wanna be a kept bish cooking, cleaning, taking care of the kids and riding him like a stallion after a hard days work.
Well until she can achieve such a life, Wren said let me get my own and that’s exactly what she did as one of the top and most sought after Real Estate agents in Brookwood North Carolina. Between managing her career, raising a 10 year old and co parenting if that’s what you even want to call it, Wren has her hand full. All it took was the right man to come along and empty them b*tches and that’s exactly what NFL player Dom came and did.
From their first meeting the chemistry was explosive and these two did not play about each other when it was all said and done. I love love love mature relationships! They just hit different! The communication, and understanding and no jumping to unnecessary conclusions!! Yes to all of this! I especially enjoyed how Dom came in and improved the quality of life for Wren and Jada so effortlessly. He was the bonus father any girl would want!
This was a really cute story and if this is how the series is starting out, I’m excited for the next book!
Wren and Dom’s attraction was immediate, without any drama or angst. Dom, a former NFL athlete transitioning into a more relaxed role, is relocating to Brookwood for a fresh start. Wren is a sweet mom, focused on raising her daughter, co-parenting with an immature BD, and her job as a realtor. These were her priorities until she met Dom, searching for the perfect home. He came into her life and disrupted it in the most beautiful, sexy way. He pursued her patiently and eventually made his way into her heart. Dom exuded all the BDE and charm while winning Wren and her daughter over.
I loved every page of this well-developed, feel-good, and sexy story. The narrators were 10/10.
I love Dom like omg. He had BDE and he was just that dude. He was a real man who took care of the woman he wanted even though they weren’t even married yet.
Wren was a super mom and a sweetheart. She hustled to get where she was besides the odds set against her and I loved that about her. She took care of her daughter and always put what she needed first. Cathy was everything she needed in a mother and I’m glad she had her as a mother figure.
I wish I could have seen their wedding or maybe them having kids so I could see Dom as a dad like yes he was a stepdad to Jada since the beginning but I wanted to see Wren pregnant and how he catered to her.
Such a sweet story! I’m just trying to figure out if I-40 can get you to Brookwood? It seems all the ballers are moving there LOL!
The narrator for Wren (FMC) sometimes threw me off due to the tone used. Wren sounded like a proper 40 year old divorcee on her parts. It volleyed between that and a southern lilt on occasion. I see that this is a newer narrator and will keep an eye out for other projects because she did well with accents and brought personality into the characters aside from the initial note.
The stories are cute as all get out. And I am loving the couples in the story too. Less drama and a lovely story about second chance romance is the ticket. I'm good.
Really enjoyed Wren and Dom’s story! Dom is definitely another book bae and I loved how despite his past traumas, he gave 100% trying to love Wren properly and OUT LOUD! Can’t wait to dive into books 2 and 3 of this series.
I really really loved this one! I loved the immediate attraction between Wren and Dom because sometimes that's just how it goes. I don't think their relationship was rushed and everything happened as a result of their maturity. Dom is another Black male character who knows what he wants and goes after it no matter the obstacles. We love a Black woman who learns that she does not have to be in control of everything and that it is okay to let a man take charge.
This was almost painfully boring, which is a real bummer. There was absolutely no conflict, no tension (the fun kind or otherwise), no humor, no flirting, no banter, nothing. If you want a romance about two individuals who are just extremely mature, secure, and communicate well with each other, this is the book for you! If you’re looking for a romance that has a little more depth and doesn’t read like a therapist’s guide to effective communication in a healthy relationship, then I’d pass on this one.
I loved that this wasn’t just about romance it was about trust, timing, and learning to open yourself up after the kind of heartbreak that makes you build walls. Wren had her guard up, and I got it. Because honestly, what woman hasn’t felt like loving again was a risk. But watching her slowly let someone new in on her terms was so satisfying.
She deserved peace, not pressure, and Dom came in with nothing but intention. The way he pursued Wren with patience, but still made it clear he wanted her, mWhew. That man understood the assignment. This was such a cute, grown, and feel-good story.
Give me all the romance! Here’s one of my recents - a short sports/single mom instalove romance that I thought was an ok read.
They met while Don came to meet Wren to discuss buying a home. They met again in the neighborhood, I blinked, and they were in love.
Don was very mature and made it known quickly, almost instantly, that he wanted a relationship and a future with Wren. No miscommunication here (+++), they both had no problems communicating their feelings and concerns.
I wishes there were some angsty or swoony moments, cutesy banter and romantic gestures that could’ve intensified the chemistry and packed more of a punch. My favorite part of the story was Dom’s family; they were so welcoming.
It reminded me a little of Beautiful Broken Love (another sports romance), but without the grief and sadness.
It’s a lighthearted story with great narration. I’m enjoying listening to more stories with talented new narrators!!
It touched on something that so many of us as women struggle with—the feeling that we’re not quite worthy of the love someone is trying to give us. That hesitation, the self-doubt, the quiet questioning of whether love can actually be safe or real… it was all there.
I appreciated how the story explored that internal tug-of-war and didn’t shy away from the emotional layers that come with it. It felt honest and relatable in a way that made me pause and reflect on how often we block love, not because it isn’t genuine, but because we haven’t fully believed in our own worth yet. This book was a reminder that sometimes the real work isn’t convincing someone else to love us—it’s learning to accept the love being offered. AND to love ourselves!
Such a cute, well rounded story. I loved Mr some Dom. He's a man that knew what he wanted and what he wanted was Wren Michelle. Jahquel's pen doesn't miss.
I loved that it were “older” main characters and how mature their relationship was, Dom’s like chef’s kiss 😘 But then it just all went too smooth, and too well communicated and everything just worked out too fast too good and that didn’t feel realistic nor needed, and it bugged me. I would have loved more story after this end, like an epilogue or some extra chapters.
Dom was forced to retire from the NFL due to an injury and moved to Brookwood for a new job opportunity as a Sports commentor. He was depressed for 2 years, so the move was much needed. Meeting Wren was the highlight for him. She was supposed to help him find a home, and he literally was like forget that I just want to get to know you lol. Wren has been on her grind with establishing a career and taking care of her daughter, due to an inconsistent baby father. She also had a rough childhood, so her guard is up rightfully so. Even though they fell for each other fast, Dom still had his work cut out for him in breaking down Wren's walls. Dom was the perfect definition of action speaks louder than words. He continuously showed up for his "Beauty" and her daughter Jade "mini-me". Jade loved her some "Dommi" too. This story has little to no drama, and I enjoyed just reading about two people falling in love. I am now invested in this small town of Brookwood. Jahquel J is a new to me author, but I am excited to read about Jru and Sade's stories next.
3.5⭐️ (Definitely better than 3 stars, but honestly not enough to round it up).
Wren Michelle is that girl. Top real estate agent in North Carolina, mama to the adorable and whip-smart Jada, and single by choice because the men in her life—past and present—have done nothing but disappoint. Her baby daddy? A gambling ghost who pops up just long enough to piss you off. So when Dom Pickens, a retired NFL player with that good-good energy, walks into her life searching for a house... he might just find a home in her heart instead.
And yeah, he falls fast. Like, blink-and-he’s-planning-the-wedding kind of fast. It’s the kind of insta-love that flirts with fantasy—a little bit ridiculous, a little bit swoony—and while I raised a brow more than once, I also couldn’t help but enjoy the ride.
Dom is the kind of man romance readers daydream about. He doesn’t just show up—he steps up. He sees Wren, sees her daughter, and doesn’t hesitate. Not to play dad, but to show up like a grown-ass man who knows what he wants and isn’t afraid to love out loud. That part? Chef’s kiss. There’s no dumb drama. The communication is solid. And the way he melts whenever Wren calls? Whew. It’s giving romantic reliability, and I am here for it.
The heat level? Less explicit than I expected—but it worked. It kept things sexy without overshadowing the heart. Wren and Dom are flirty-cute. Like blush-in-the-grocery-store cute.
But here’s where the book didn’t quite hit the full emotional touchdown for me.
First, the relationship? It moved so fast, it didn’t leave space for roots to grow. We’re told Wren has deep scars—and one flashback really does cut deep—but most of that trauma gets brushed aside. Dom is great, but their connection never really dives below the surface. I wanted more storm before the calm. More truth behind the trust. The harmony felt a little too easy, a little too light for characters with such heavy pasts.
And I gotta be honest—Wren’s narration (in the audiobook) occasionally pulled me out. Some of her enunciation choices just didn’t match the rhythm and rawness of the woman I was picturing. That’s a performance issue more than a writing one, but still—worth mentioning.
All that said? This was still a feel-good, flirty little snack. It's the kind of read you curl up with when you want romance that’s smooth, sexy, and mostly drama-free. Not every story needs to break your heart to feel good—and this one proves that.
Would I read more from Jahquel J? Absolutely. I just hope next time we dive a little deeper.
This was the cutest story. It’s the perfect book palette cleanser. From the moment Dom saw Wren, he knew she was going to be his. This man was suppose to be buying a house and his focus shifted to pursing and dating Wren. What I loved most is despite Wren being skeptical at 1st, she let him. Dom applied the best pressure without over doing it and let his actions speak louder than his words. After dealing with her ex/BD Wren was guarded but the fact that Dom showed up for Mini Me in the best way especially when her daddy was on his BS. Yessssss step daddy. Cause Mini Me definitely loved her some Domi🥰🥰 . Dom really stepped big behind Wren and showed her that her ex was a fool and he wasn’t making the same mistakes. Go check this out. Loved, loved, loved!
It was a nice change to read a black romance book with two black main characters and no struggle love; just a nice, warm and fuzzy, popcorn read. The exposition and all the talk of exes was a bit much for me, but the clarity of intention from Dom (from the very beginning) was everything. The first third of the book really had me giggling and kicking my feet in excitement. The ending was a bit underwhelming and a tad unbelievable (particularly the whole Jon thing) but it was an enjoyable read, if only for the lead up to their relationship and the warm and fuzzy feelings of a chill blackity black romance.
This was the sweetest love story. I found myself smiling through majority of the book. Even better that the MMC was rich af and spoiled the FMC. If you want a light, fluffy romance with all the feels - go read this!
