The very beautiful heroine has made a promise to her dying mother, that she will travel to England and ask for assistance from their relative the Duke.
Her mother had been estranged from her family ever since she ran away with her husband, a gambler. So the heroine is very apprehensive about her reception by the Duke.
Surprisingly, the Duke is very kind and accommodating. However he is having a party, and though he asks the heroine to join him and his friends, she realizes, that the party is a bit disreputable. Unfortunately it cant be helped since she did arrive unannounced.
Since the heroine is very beautiful she even incurs the jealousy of the Duke’s married lover. Nevertheless the heroine is enjoying her time exploring her mother’s old home when one evening as she walks in the garden at night, she spies some suspicious men trying to enter the house.
As she goes and tries to warn the Duke, she realizes that he mistress is in bed with him, and that the man trying to enter the house is her jealous husband who wants to catch the Duke. The mistress hides under the bed and the heroine pretends that it was her in the Duke’s bed. The husband apologizes and leaves.
The next day, the Duke hurriedly drives the heroine to London, where he tells her that, to save her reputation, he needs to marry her. The heroine is so distressed as she feels he is being forced to marry her. So she goes to a nearby chapel to pray over it.
Then she decides to go to the graveyard nearby, where an old man, an artist sees her. Since she is very beautiful, he convinces her to be his model for a portrait and promises to pay her. The heroine sees this as her way out and goes with him.
The old man manages to paint her and exhibits the picture in the academy. This is how the Duke finds her. He confesses that he fell in love w her, but didn’t tell her since he thought she would not believe him. He also tells her he never touched his mistress after he met the heroine, and it was in fact the mistress who came into his room to remonstrate with him when the heroine entered and warned them.
They both confess their love and have a happy ever after! ❤️
I like her stories and I read them over and over. I just finished rereading one of her romances and I loved it. I wish I could be young again with my old head so I could really enjoy being in love.
