In this suspenseful, romantic sequel to Apparition, Amelia Mackenzie, reluctant teenage clairvoyant, is caught up in a series of paranormal mysteries that threaten to unravel everything she believes in. After Amelia's best friend and secret crush Matthew dies in an apparent suicide, Amelia is heartbroken. Adding to her upheaval is the realization that she is firmly in the clutches of Matthew's ghost. Even after the barn in which Matthew had died is burnt to the ground, Matthew's spirit continues to stalk the ruins and Amelia must try to take care of his increasingly restless and reckless ghostly acts. It's not easy for Amelia to keep Matthew's presence a secret from her two brothers and her grandmother, Joyce. Amelia even tries to keep Matthew's 'survival' from her ghost tracking mentor Morris and his son Kip. But she is harbouring an even bigger secret these her deepening feelings for Kip. Unable to reconcile her longing for the flesh-and-blood Kip with her commitment to Matthew's ghost, she's pushed Kip away. Now, he's gone back to school in Chicago, and she can't get him off her mind. By the time Amelia and Morris are given a new ghost-tracking challenge, Kip has returned to Grey County for spring break, and long buried sparks are beginning to fly. As the trio set out to uncover the mysterious story behind a local inn that seems to harbour a ghost with a guilty conscience, desperate for forgiveness the mystery only deepens. Before long, a stretch of country road nearby reveals a strange history of its own--a series of fatal car accidents involving deer. Is there a connection between the haunted inn and the deadly stretch of road that it's on? With the rivalry intensifying between Matthew and Kip, Amelia's heart is in more conflict than ever. The ghost Matthew gets ever more comfortable in his phantom skin, which means Kip's headed for trouble, and only Amelia can protect him.
I have written a memoir called THE CHANGELING (2019) about being haunted all my life by the death of my sister the year before I was born. My mother believed I was her lost daughter, returned from the dead by God, and so I believed it too. Until I began to question it, and her, and God and myself.
I've also written two paranormal thrillers about Amelia Mackenzie, a supernatural sleuth in training. Like a crime detective, solving ghost crimes. But she's also a teenage girl with boy issues, big time. APPARITION came out in September of 2013, and its sequel ABSOLUTION is coming out in Fall of 2014. I blog about things related to my books and ghosts in general at http://gailgallant.com and my Facebook page is www.Facebook.com/GailGallantBooks
I've worked in factual television for many years, current affairs and documentaries, as a producer, director, story editor and writer. I live in Grey County, Ontario, in a very old stone farmhouse.
All I could say is read this book. It isn't as amazing as the first book but it's really good. My review is gone for some reason and I am really tired...
Amelia has a gift. She can see ghosts. She and Morris, a paranormal investigator, assist those plagued with hauntings, and in Absolution, Amelia investigates a haunted hotel with a tortured ghost who harbors a dark past.
This book was great! It completely reached above and beyond my expectations and pulled me into the story from the start! There aren't enough, good quality mystery YA novels out there, but this is one of the few that have blown my mind!
Amelia was an incredibly likeable character, and I was able to connect to her and her thoughts, emotions, and experiences with ease. She felt like a real person at times, not just a fictional character.
The author was able to creep me out at the appropriate instances, for example, when Amelia was trying to communicate with the ghost and when the ghost appeared. However, this is one of the YA books that does not override the characters' personal issues with paranormal ones, so I was able to keep track of and remember the relevance of both the "real-world" and the paranormal events in the story.
I recommend this novel to fans of ghost stories and to YA readers looking for something that deviates from intense love triangles and balances romance with mysterious events and happenings.
I received this book in a first reads goodreads giveaway.
Was pretty good , yet for it having nearly 50 chapters it took nearly the whole book( near the end mostly) to for Amelia and kip to get through their issues... For some reason thats the beat part of this series, the relationship they have:) will dread the wait for the next book as i really wanna know whats happening next:) too excited
I really enjoyed this sequel--lots of fun and very intriguing. Amelia is still very charming and feels very real, and there is a definite sense of her growing up a bit as she learns to deal with her abilities (both psychic and sleuthing), and with her relationship (non-relationship?) with Kip. I like the balance the author has struck between the paranormal mystery/ghost story feel of the novel, and the romantic subplot.
On the mystery/ghost story plot side of things, I found the scary parts a little scarier than in the first book (which is a good thing!), and the overall plot and twists worked really well for me. At one point, about 2/3rds in, I thought I had it all sussed out and was patting myself on the back (rather smugly, I must say), only to be totally surprised by the next bunch of revelations. (Well done, Gail!)
As far as the romantic subplot goes, the evolution of Amelia and Kip's relationship is as adorable as it is frustrating, which actually makes it VERY believable--almost painfully so at times. (Have I mentioned how much I love that there's no insta-love in this series??)
Overall, I feel like the writing style has matured along with the protagonist, and my only quibble was that there seemed to be a lot of recapping about what happened in the first book (though I understand it was arguably necessary for readers who might have come straight to ABSOLUTION without having read APPARITION first). I'm definitely curious to see where Amelia's adventures will take her next!
Absolution is the sequel of the Apparition series by the talented author Gail Gallant. It’s more mysterious, suspenseful then the first one. Although I already read the second one back in 2014, I forgot some major events in the book so it felt as if I read it like the first time!
The story begins five days after the events in Apparition. Even after the haunted barn in which Matthew had died got burned to the ground, Matthew’s ghost stays behind instead of moving on. He becomes more restless and becomes more reckless as a ghost and Amelia must try to figure how to help him. Amelia keeps Matthew’s presence as a secret from her family, Morris and Kip. Amelia is facing a dilemma: she is falling for Kip, a flesh and blood person but she also cares about Matthew who is now a ghost. She is stuck in between. She pushes Kip away first so she can focus on helping Matthew. Kip leaves to go back to school in Chicago because he feels that he and Amelia should just remain friends even he does really care for her. Then, Detective Grierson gives Morris and Amelia what seems to be a paranormal case: a local inn where a tortured ghost with a dark past is living with a guilty conscience and is desperate for forgiveness after all these years. Morris and Amelia accept to solve it. Kip returns to Grey County for spring break and helps his father and Amelia to uncover the haunted inn. Also, nearby the inn, along the road, there has been a series of fatal car accidents involving a deer. Amelia seems to question if there is a connection between the two places.
This sequel is still narrated by Amelia. I still loved all the characters from this book! Amelia is growing more and is learning to develop her ghost seeing abilities. I also love the love triangle is in this novel Amelia was torn between two persons. There is no insta-love in the series. The love triangle was well handled and well written. Her thoughts and feelings were complex but they felt real as any teenage girl that is dealing with loss and grief and also feeling love. Sometimes, you have to let go of the past in order to move on in the future. The plot was full of twists and turns that I couldn’t guess everything but it all made sense in the end and I was blown away! It was really harder to predict than the first novel!
I’m curious to know and to read where Amelia’s ghost adventure will take her next. If there is a third book of this series coming out (wish I really hope there would be one), I will be the first one to buy it and read it!
I liked this one more than the first one! I found the plot line more intriguing and harder to predict. The characters and writing style have really grown on me as well, especially Kip and Amelia. ^_^ I can't wait to read the next book in the series! <33333
