It had been almost a year since Cari had escaped and promised to come back and save Jess from the Relians who held her captive and brutalized her since she was a child. Now as her usefulness to the Relians was at an end and rescue nowhere in sight, she only hoped to face her impending death with courage. Walking onto the field where she was to die, she never expected the giant warrior who tried to save her.
Amun had been obsessed with the tortured woman since the moment Cari had told him about her and showed him her gift. He’d spent the last year desperate to find her as their ship tracked the Relian camp in the hopes of rescuing her, never giving up hope that one day he could hold her, heal her. He never expected the impact that her shattered body and soul would have on him.
With a traitor on the loose and the Relian leader threatening to kill all of the hybrid women and children, Jess and Amun are thrust into the middle of danger, only this time he is determined to protect her and keep her safe.
Read through Kindle unlimited, currently listed $2.99. Second in the First Wave series. Takes up a year after the first novel. Once again I enjoyed the characters, and a lot were added this time through, but nothing that you couldn't keep up with... more a chance to find future mate hopefuls you can root for later in the series. You so got brief glances of those characters we met from the first novel and a continuation of the overall story and the fight against the Relians... Despite all of these positive things, I still felt like it was a bit long and dragged in some areas and there were some editing errors throughout. Still, overall, a great second book for this series and I still look forward to what happens next. -zittern
I was really looking forward to this book after finding out a bit about Jess's story and how it was left unresolved at the end of Cari's story. Despite a rocky and very exciting beginning, I was left a bit unsatisfied after the second half. Everything was so slow and wasn't really centered on Jess and Amun anymore. And I was kind of expecting more details about Valendra, the world, its culture, history, about other alien species or even some difference between them and human. They were not original enough in my opinion and it felt like normal human to me.
Finally, a read that is more about the emotional connection than the physical. This book is a seq dual and is better when read in order. I appreciated the MINIMAL use of crude, vulgar language.
Slow and not a lot of action. I want to love this series but it's driving me crazy that none of the original characters are in this as much as I want. I'm waiting to actually read about the planet and the way the women react to it. A little dull.
I'm so sad to this book didn't have the same magic as the first. It had a barrage of New characters. I don't like how the main characters were barely apart of the story. I don't think I will be buying the 3rd . Bummer.
This book was alright. Not one I would recommend and I doubt I will continue the series. It has wild jumps in logic such as Jess feeling like she is being told she isn’t worthy because she was a “whore” (she is not... she was brutalized, raped, and held captive for YEARS), but the conversation that led her there was about what was required or needed from her. He was telling her that yes normally women care for the home but on this MILITARY SPACE SHIP it isn’t needed. How she got to being a “whore” and unworthy was beyond my ability to understand. I do like the premise but I am not impressed with the writing.

I'm hooked on this series and excited the next book is already out. I was worried about Jess after finishing book 1. Goodness she's a tough woman. Amun and Jess are perfect for one another. He's exactly the kind of man she needs and deserves after the years of abuse and neglect.
Although not as poignant as book one, this is still a romantic, action filled story. We are introduced to many more characters all of whom have their own strengths. A really good series!
I wish I had half the imagination that Ms. Lane does, the stories she has written make me stop and wonder....what if? I hope she writes many many more!
Solid Romance and the sci fi world building expands
I enjoyed this book much more than book one of the First Wave Series, as the emotional connection between Jess and Amun is the heart of this book.
Both characters were introduced in book one. Jess was a fellow Relian captive along with Cari, the heroine from book one. She suffered horrid physical, sexual and emotional abuse from a small child, remarkable she suffered hardly any psychologically as a result. I do think the author failed to explore what should have been some lasting issues. Repeated rapes from an adolescent until the age of twenty one or twenty five, leaves more than physical scars. Also her relationship with Julou does not ring true to the events of book one. In fact the entire Julou storyline seemed inserted and then forgotten.
Several times events or plot lines were started then dropped, as there are a lot of loose ends in this book. Some of the sentences inserted into the text did not make sense, as they responded to questions a character had not asked. Both grammar and punctuation needs fixed, as I am not the grammar police I over looked it. I always believe grammar can be fixed, it is the story that matters and Lane has a nice story in this book and series. I do believe the author would benefit from a good editor and some honest constructive content edits, as the author has potential to write a five star books. In this book she had a good romance and a wonderful emotional connection between the two main characters.
A little predictable at times. Good story line. Each book in this series advances the characters and the over all plot. Do wonder what's going on between the opposing forces around Mars. That element of the story just vanished after the opposing battleship arrived and made threats, then nothing else was heard from them. Overall a fun read.
In honorable aliens who found love in human women. Hybrids targeted by world destroyers. Peace and love are snatched from the honorable warriors and evil is pushing to destroy all that is good on earth for a million years.
This was Amun and Jess's book and if you (like me) are into your alien love story every once in a while then this is a MUST read !! You will not be disappointed !!
Good addition to the series. Edited better... After everything Jess went through she deserved and got her HEA. I can't wait until May to read Dare's story.
love among earth bound aliens and their mixed species mates...if at enemies both foreign and domestic, intrigue, danger...love triumphs. Re-read in April, 2027. Still liked it.
I love this series. Though the author needs to do some more editing, the story line and character development is good. I can see this a a tv show. Love it!
