Dying Words

Can it be true that God demands a terrible price of those He has gifted with great creativity? Giacomo Cassano, little known mentor of Dante, thought so. He held other beliefs too - beliefs that the Church found so abhorrent they had Cassano blinded and his tongue cut out to silence him forever.

Bestselling biographer Megan Hunter's new book about Cassano looks set to be as successful as her previous biographies of Caravaggio and Dante. As she embarks on a publicity tour, Megan finds her book attracting attention for the wrong reasons when her editor is found horrifically murdered. It is a classic locked-room mystery. The only pieces of evidence are the destroyed remains of Megan Hunter's Cassano biography and the latest blockbuster by horror writer John Paxton. But there is nothing to link the two authors. Nothing but another murder. And another.

And a secret beyond the belief of even Cassano himself ...

With a plot synopsis that sounds like Hutson is trying to cash in on the whole 'Da Vinci Code' and 'The Holy Blood And The Holy Grail' success, I must admit that I was very apprehensive when I first picked up his latest novel. As I soon found out, 'Dying Words' is actually far from this genre of novel.

The tale follows the main character Detective Inspector David Birch who comes across as a reincarnation of the ever-popular Sean Doyle. As the murders begin to mount up within the novel, the reader is kept guessing as to who the murderer is and how the victims are being killed in such horrific ways without the killer being caught.

With the tale approaching the end, all becomes clear as a corny grand finale is played out to provide the novel with its dramatic ending.

The novel as a whole lacks the passion for action-packed violence and the usual splatterpunk blood and guts gore that we expect from a Hutson novel. Instead 'Dying Words' seems to be a watered down supernatural thriller that has been rushed out from a very weak story idea. Not since reading Hutson's 1992 novel 'Heathen' have I been so disappointed with one of his novels.

The novel's twist ending is predictable from very early on and the final conclusion is weak and disappointing. The storyline is fast-paced and reasonably gripping for the first 200 pages, but from there on it seems to lose its momentum. All in all I would say that this is one of Hutson's poorest novels to date.

The book lasts for 357 pages and was published through Orbit.

For the best part of this crime novel, Hutson provides readers with a repetitive tease chapter after chapter. It's a sloppy approach at delaying any real content and the sequence of grisly murders appear just often enough to keep the pages turning. The finale however takes a leap from Graham Masterton's work and is an interesting and surprising turn. The novel certainly lacks the mystique or tension of Masterton's approach, however previous readers of Hutson's novels will know what to expect. So, persistent teasing aside, there's a quality ending and some interesting enough characters to make Dying Words a quick and easy horror yarn, worthy of a few hours of your time.

You'd think Shaun Hutson would have run of ideas by now but this one was pretty good - same 1 dimensional characters which could easily be interchanged with any of his other protagonists from other books without you even noticing - but you don't read Shaun Hutson for characterisation - it's his ability to make you turn the page that is the draw here and this one certainly does that!

Malo. Terrible.

I am reviewing the thriller novel Dying Words by Shaun Hutson which is a very good book which I bought from kindle. Hutson tends to wrire very violent almost sick novels but they are always well written. This book starts off with the police chasing a sadistic paedophile and he takes a hostage who he almost kills and when he brags he will get off with insanity one of the policemen loses his temper and pushes him onto the live rail of the underground railway. Someone then has a badly deformed baby which does eventually die but she is a successful author and the theme to this book is when you have an exceptional talent something is taken in return ie Beethoven going deaf. Apparently a philosopher came up with the theory. The key character is a policeman who is on the trail of a serial killer who kills people gruesomely and has deformed fingers which at one stage lead the police to think they are chasing 2 people. The murderer is killing people because she thinks that is the price to pay for her talent. There is a happy ending and although this isn't one of Hutson's better books is pretty good.

When horrific crimes link two very different authors, it's up to the police to investigate.

Pretty good book even if the plot is quite predictable. The descriptions of the crimes are very graphic but not too horrific.
