Mr. Newman, who was born in Manhattan, began his career as a writer for radio shows. In 1944, he was in charge of the radio portion of President Franklin D. Roosevelt's re-election campaign. He also wrote ''Search for Tomorrow'' and ''Peyton Place'' episodes for television.
From 1973 to 1988, he wrote books for young people, including ''The Case of the Baker Street Irregular,'' published by Atheneum in 1978, and many novels.
What a terrific middle-grade. The adventures get darker and more complicated, the stakes get higher, and I love how Sara's grit and Wyatt's loneliness and bravery shine through. This is my favorite of the series so far in the read-through.
I ordered this book completely by accident! I generally prefer cozy mysteries that take place in more modern times. However, since I had it, I decided that I may as well read it. What a wonderful surprise! The writing is outstanding. The characters are engaging and the puzzle is fun and solveable. I will definitely enjoy more from this series.
Such a fine imagination, Mr. Newman! The fine line Inspector Wyatt, Sarah and Andrew trace to the culprits leads to drama and more mystery. A very good read
As the third book in the series revolving around boy and girl detectives Andrew Tillett and Sara Wiggins, it's understandable that Newman would have wanted to spice things up.
Constable Wyatt is now Inspector Wyatt of the Yard, Scotland Yard that is, and a firm friend of the family, taking Andrew and Sara to cricket matches and coming to Sunday tea. However, coming back home from school one day Sara is kidnapped, and it is up to Wyatt and Andrew to find her and her friend Maria, the daughter of the Serbian ambassador.
Andrew and Sara don't share many scenes in this book and the story does get quite draggy and tedious as a result. There is still a lot of activity, as Andrew assists in the investigations and Sara tries to find out from her prison. However it's very much Wyatt and Andrew's show with Sara and Verna relegated to supporting roles.
A secondary plot has Wyatt's sister-in-law Hannah running away in an effort to get the General to reconcile with his son. This would have made a far better storyline for the book in all honesty.
