From hiding in potato chip bags to eating everything in sight, this family is having a very strange day, in a collection of poetic tales enhanced with bright illustrations. By the creators of School A Book of Poems.

This collection of poetry ventures off into the kitchen, visualizing and imagining the most delicious meals throughout the day! There is poems about breakfast, lunch, snacks, dinner, and my favorite...desserts! Readers can tap into their senses, as they read about "the smells of bacon.." to eating a "sandwich cookie fast - 1 bite, 2 bite - End of cookie." There are short poems, long poems, ones that rhyme, and those that are descriptive. The collections of poems will make you crave for a good meal and some more poetry! Most of the poems are unique, but as a reader who does not enjoy poetry, there are some that don't make as much sense or ones that are difficult to make connections with.
This would be a unique text to read to preschoolers, as we learn about healthy habits and teach ways to tap into our senses. This can also help enhance a unit on poetry for the lower elementary school grades.
I included this book because it is a very simple book to introduce rhyming to students. It also allows students to see how the different senses are used. I read this book after one of my classmates had told me about it and I liked it. It was a cute book that I think younger elementary kids would enjoy and I can see how it would be used in a classroom.
This was my son's first non-nursery rhyme poetry book. He loved it at age 2, and still loves it 7 years later--in fact he recently told me he wants to keep this book forever. YUMMY! is great at introducing cadence and rhythm to kids -- and since it's about food, they completely understand all the imagery, such as the "sugar moon" of an Oreo-like sandwich cookie or the crisp tongue of a potato chip. The illustrations are very surreal and colorful, in keeping with the playful nature of the text.
Yummy is a collection of poems about different kinds of food. The poems are very descriptive and allows you to imagine about the food using your senses. Students can use this book as a guide for them to do an activity where can write a poem about their favorite food and they can describe the food by using their five senses. Students will be able to explore with different adjectives to describe their item of food and explore with their senses.
This book used fun filled experiences to tell children that eating healthy through out the day is good for them. Also it teaches about table manners and shows the kids that being respectful doesn't have to be boring. I may suggest this book to parents in a weekly news letter so they may read it with their children and enjoy that time together.
As a person who has a soft spot for food, especially sweet foods, I felt a strong need to read this book after reading the title. I thought that this was a very good and clever book! I liked how it talked about multiple food groups and went from foods you would eat in the morning throughout the day to foods that you would eat at night.
