Eva Kershaw thought she would never marry, and is happy living a quiet life with her dear friend Alice. But Alice is ill, and her nephew has thrust himself into their household. Alice's dearest wish is that Eva should not make the same mistakes she did, a

A wonderful read alone story that is a part of the Kershaw sisters family saga. Eva is looking after her terminally ill friend Alice who she loves as a mother but things take a dramatic turn when Alice's nephew Gus turns up and Alice dies leaving a startling provision in the will. Eva will inherit everything if she marries within one year of Alice's death so the natural choice to benefit both of them (at Alice's prompting and matchmaking before her death) is the wily Gus. Things proceed until the wedding day when yet again fate deals a dramatic blow in the shape of a Mrs. Blake who is very much alive and apparently wedded to the sneaky Gus. This puts a whole new spin on events but Gus is being awkward and though everything is his fault he refuses to move and makes life a misery for Eva until she finally in desperation along with her friend and servant Jenny leave the house altogether. Frantic she stays with the Brierly family and looks after Aaron's dying wife Lil who confesses to her that Aaron never really loved her as a wife and married her just because she was expecting one of their daughters and pleads with Eva after her death to marry Aaron and be a wife and mother to her grieving daughters. This will solve both Eva's and Aaron's problems as he is struggling financially after being injured during the war and work is hard to find and MAYBE just maybe Eva can inherit and get rid of the cuckoo in the nest Gus but Gus has other ideas and his own reasons for being so stubborn and awkward... A wonderful book I finished in two days as I couldn't put it down. Well worth reading and is a rich historical novel.
The 3rd Kershaw book and just as exciting as the other two Eva was a single girl a former school teacher . She had been looking after Alice a good friend who was dying and when she died caused a lot of problems but Eva is a Kershaw and doesn't give up read this for a fabulous read now to read book four . 5 STARS for Anna Jacobs .
`Our Eva' is a wonderful well-written tale. It's a must for anyone with a desire to experience the community spirit, `simple' pleasures and relentless hardship for people, especially women, who lived in Britain between the wars.
Another enthralling read about the Kershaw family. I like that each book follows on from the previous one. Now, I’m off to grab the next and final book of this series as I desperately want to know who Mary Ann is......(it’s called Our Mary Ann in case you hadn’t guessed🤪😁😊)
This rating is not enough it should be more this book was brilliant all the sisters had such an appalling start to their lives but get through everything that is thrown at them ,I'm glad Eva got to marry Arron and the children and Lil for being so brave to suggest Eva marry her husband so he wouldn't be alone to bring up the children.
Anna Jacobs can always be relied on to provide an enjoyable tale; I hadn't realised that this was the 3rd in a series, I shall have to look out for the earlier two books.
Eva almost makes a huge mistake with the marriage but gets out of it, although still has a hell of a life with Gus around. Lil has a great idea for her and Aaron which ends up in happy family.
Book 3 of the Kershaw Sisters and my favourite. Eva Kershaw is happy living with her dear friend Alice, who has been like a mother to her since she went to live with her after the death of her father. But now, three years after the end of the Great War, Alice is dying. Eva is further upset by the unexpected arrival of Gus Blake, Alice's nephew. Alice's main regret is that she never had children, and she's determined Eva shall not make the same mistake. She sees in Gus - young, handsome, and confident - the answer to her prayers. Eva is torn between her desire to make her friend happy and her instinctive mistrust of Gus. Then Alice's will presents Eva with a difficult - and dangerous - decision. It is also the story of the Brierley family suffering deprivations, and their father injured in the war and how they and Eva all find hope despite the difficult circumstances of their lives.
This so far is my favourite series by Anna Jacobs.
