For parents of children with Asperger Syndrome ordinary parenting just doesn't always do it - AS kids need a different approach. Brenda is mother to thirteen-year-old Kenneth, author of Asperger Syndrome, the Universe and Everything, and since his diagnosis at the age of eight she has gathered together the parenting ideas and tips that have had a positive effect on Kenneth's life. Brenda discusses parents' reaction to their child's AS and gives advice on how better to understand 'Planet Asperger'. This book helps parents to respond positively to the challenge of AS and find the 'treasure' in their child's way of being.
Skôr by som prijala rady an pre rodičov starších detí.
This is subtitled 200 tips and strategies, which it has but it is a stretch to call some of them separate tips (they are really just an extension of a previous tip), and some of them are so basic as not to be helpful, or thought provoking (which is part of what I look for in books like this). I want the new piece of advice or angle that I haven’t thought of yet.
Having said that it does have some useful reminders and parents new to the diagnosis would find it useful.
Those who have already done exhaustive reading aren’t likely to find much new here – however it is a quick read, and definitely not a waste of time as I think it is always valuable to be reminded of strategies and attitudes we occasionally forget to stick to, as well as reading some new analogies, which can be useful when explaining behaviours to family members or teachers.
A lot of common sense here but definitely great for a refresher and back to basics approach. Loved the way the tips were sectioned so you can pick up and put down as needed. Really helpful with school homework and daily routine advice.
I was expecting more from this book since it was so highly reviewed. However, many of the tips seemed common sense to me and I didn't really find anything new. It was really more of the same things I have been reading over and over. What I'm really looking for is a book focusing on AS in the preschool age child, with instruction on how to teach social interaction.
This was a quick read, unusual in these kinds of books. It had some good tips but none described in great detail, you kind of have to fill in the blanks. I didn't read all the appendices.
A very basic "tips" book aimed at raising younger children with Asperger's, but it still had a number of good things to remember for Aspies at any age.
This is the perfect book to start with for the parent with a newly diagnosed child. Full of tips. The book can save you the time it will take you to figure things out on your own.
