Do You Have What It Takes To Lead Your Team To Victory ?
Your school baseball team has made it to the finals of the national tournament. Just before the big game, your coach collapses and is rushed to the hospital. It's up to you to step in and manage the team. In the top of the fourth inning, you see an opportunity to try a blind pickoff play. But the play is risky, and even the smallest error could give the other team the opening they need. The pressure is on. Should you try it?
If you signal for the blind pick-off play, turn to page 28. if you decide to play it safe, turn to page 86. But think about your decision carefully. If the other team takes a big lead at this point, it could be disastrous. However if the pickoff play is successful, you'll be well on your way to clinching the championship.
What happens next in the story? It all depends on the choices you make. How does the story end? Only you can find out! And the best part is that you can keep reading and rereading until you've had not one but many incredibly daring experiences!
Author Felix Von Moschzisker makes his one and only contribution to the Choose Your Own Adventure series with this book. He clearly possesses a detailed managerial baseball mind, creating a plot that doesn't involve baseball peripherally (as with some Choose Your Own Adventure books that feature a sports theme), but delves deeply into the unique pace and style of our national pastime to deliver a game-realistic narrative.
For the most part, the reader's baseball strategy choices lead to believable consequences. Bad decisions result in unnecessarily tight games and even losses when your team makes it onto the biggest stage, but sound decision-making generally puts your team on the path of victory.
The subtleties of baseball strategy aren't perfect in this book, but the author makes a good attempt at turning an exciting sport into an appealing Choose Your Own Adventure episode. At its best, Playoff Champion delivers that, and I'm sure I will be taking this one off the shelf to read again when spring thaw arrives and the thoughts of a nation turn to the boys of summer.
