Edward Packard attended and graduated from both Princeton University and Columbia Law School. He was one of the first authors to explore the idea of gamebooks, in which the reader is inserted as the main character and makes choices about the direction the story will go at designated places in the text.

The first such book that Edward Packard wrote in the Choose Your Own Adventure series was titled "Sugarcane Island", but it was not actually published as the first entry in the Choose Your Own Adventure Series. In 1979, the first book to be released in the series was "The Cave of Time", a fantasy time-travel story that remained in print for many years. Eventually, one hundred eighty-four Choose Your Own Adventure books would be published before production on new entries to the series ceased in 1998. Edward Packard was the author of many of these books, though a substantial number of other authors were included as well.

In 2005, Choose Your Own Adventure books once again began to be published, but none of Edward Packard's titles have yet been included among the newly-released books.

After winning a ball throw at a fair, you can choose one of two prizes - a lucky crystal or a book titled "How to Be Lucky." Regardless of which you choose, you will have some interesting adventures, if you choose wisely. Much like with "The Worst Day of Your Life," the title is hyperbole, but the book is rather tame. The book is rather straightforward, in that it essentially emphasizes kindness, honesty, and curiosity. If you strive for those virtues in the choices you make, you will have some interesting adventures, culminating in finding a buried treasure of gold coins. If you don't follow those virtues, you will have some less than ideal endings, including a death ending (remember kids, when you are lost in the wilderness, going to a high place to get your bearings is a good idea). If you pick the lucky crystal, you will have occurrences that might be coincidences, or might be luck. It is hard to tell, and the book never really makes it clear whether or not the crystal has some special properties. However, if you are too attached to the crystal, that will come back to bite you, as being willing to let go is the key to emerging relatively unscathed from one animal encounter, and avoiding another encounter. The book also implicitly emphasizes the value of critical thinking. In some ways, although this is strange, the book is interesting because it is so down-to-Earth.

If readers apply the advice from the How to Get Lucky prize book (be kind, be honest, investigate), they will have a long and prosperous adventure. :)
