This is a boxed set of 5 very different books. They need to be reviewed individually.
Duplicity by Vicki Hinze: 3 stars
Suspense aplenty. I give the author top marks for that. The romance between the accused soldier and his JAG lawyer, however, came across to me as a bit contrived. Based on the facts revealed about their interactions together and the way they were supposedly thinking about each other, I couldn't see them together, realistically, in the short time frame given and the circumstances under which they were thrown together. That said, they did have some good moments, such as those when the word "fluff" was tossed into the mix. They redeemed the book for me and kept me reading when I might have given up on the plot.
Safe With Him by Rita Herron: 2 stars
Just a tad bit too trite --the damsel in distress fleeing for her life with her adorable daughter just happens to shelter under the protection of an ex-Texas Ranger. The plot hardly develops, the author just keeps offering up more and more predictable scenes and some down-right hard to believe ones like the former lawman/ ranch owner actually letting the woman play happy homemaker after breaking and entering his house. Despite the way the author really dropped the ball when she penned that part of the character she named, Mitch, she did get other facets of the man exactly right such as the reader's first glimpses of him and his companion, "Jack" aka "Daniels." I finished reading this book for Mitch's sake alone. The book would have been better if it was about him and not about the damsel in distress.
Taming Maggie by Peggy Webb: 1 star
Gag me or what; this is the kind of rubbish that gives romance novels a bad rep. About the only thing that kept me reading was the fact that this book was tucked into the middle of a boxed set treated as a single volume on my Kindle. Some of the verbal sparring matches between the leading man and woman were worthy of better romance writing. It was entirely disappointing to have them contaminated by all the drivel being passed off as a story.
Shadows to Light by Regan Black: 3 stars
Good sci-fi. I'd almost give it 4 stars but there was background information the author appeared to assume that the reader either knew or could easily infer, and I neither knew nor could easily infer. It wasn't until reading notes at the end of the book that I discovered this was actually the second book in a series and that a novella was also a prequel to this book. I'm quite annoyed that I wasn't warned about this book being second in a series.
Angel Be Good by Kathy Carmichael: 2 stars
Bland "B-grade" rewrite of the classic tale, "A Christmas Carol." Mostly only rates a single star but I gave it a second because the character, Daphne, is interesting.
A Christmas to remember. This definitely a five stars book. Had me laughing And crying another
Book would love a sequel. Don't want to do a spoiler. I would love for Vicki Hiinz to do more books similar to this one. You won't be disappointed make sure you have a box of tissues handy.
I picked up this set on a whim. It was on sale and I love Christmas stories. Wow. Impressed. Most of the stories were fabulous. One was a bit trite, and I won't say which one, because my tastes likely differ from yours. I would recommend this set to anyone. Nothing better than a holiday romance.
Every story was different. You have suspense, action, romance and Love. I enjoyed all five of them and I would recommend them to anyone. I will be looking for more books by these talented ladies.
Each story is amazing and different. With suspense, action and of course romance.... how can you go wrong? I want to read more from all these awesome authors.
