All it took was the encouragement of a student teacher in a ninth grade writing class and Kristy K. James was off and running. She has been writing for more years than she’ll ever admit to, and loves every aspect of it. From creating characters who are so real that they sometimes take over the writing when they don’t like where she’s taking a story, to adding as many twists and mysteries to her plots as she can get away with.

She is the author of Reluctant Guardian, A Fine Mess, and The Stranger in my Head.

Kristy currently lives in Michigan with her family, too many pets and the occasional spider. She spends her time living in her make-believe worlds, cooking and baking up a storm, and doing her best to learn to say ‘no’ when stray animals wander into her large country yard.

Reading is one of her favorite pastimes, as is traveling around the state, especially to coastal beaches to enjoy the sound of the waves crashing on the shore and gulls screeching overhead.

I wasn't really sure what to expect from this book when I put my name in to be on the Blog Tour but I can say that I was pretty impressed with it! I thought that I was going to be a bit bored with the plot but I actually really enjoyed it! The plot went at a pace that kept me interested and held my attention! I felt at times that I could guess what was going to happen though but there were also some unexpected twists and turns in this book to make you want to read on and find out more! The plot had romance in it and a bit of suspense! It was a lot better than I was hoping! The characters were written brilliantly! Laura was such an amazing character! She had been through a lot and was trying to move on with her life and Cameron definitely helps her do that! Laura was a character that I found it easy to connect with! She was someone who had been through it all but she was still standing! I also loved her relationship with her son! Cameron was the love interest of Laura and I wasn't expecting his secret at all! Once I found it out I thought that I was going to find it a bit farfetched but I actually didn't! I thought that it was an amazing twist to the story and it continued to be a major part of the story! Sam was the son of Laura and Brendan was the son of Cameron and they were both funny characters! Sam was funny as he was just completely honest and Brendan was funny as he was trying so hard to be a pain in the backside but he really wanted to contribute and have fun with the rest of the characters! There were quite a few other characters that had quite big parts in this book and they were all amazing and added so much to the story! I thought that the big scene at the end could have had more suspense in it if I'm honest! I had sort of been waiting for that scene because I knew that it was going to happen but it was different to what I was expecting! It went quite fast and it should probably have been the most important scene of the book! I can definitely see why this book is a standalone but I think that a novella or another book could lead on from the end of this one! I like the cover! It suits the book but I'm not sure if it would be the sort of cover that would personally draw me in! I am so happy that I took a chance on it though! Big thank you to Kristy for an ARC of Laying Low in Paradise and to Allison for having me on the Blog Tour!

I didn’t really know what to expect from this book, but the description seemed interesting, so I was glad to be a part of the blog tour. The book had a lot of unexpected twists and turns that kept my attention the entire time; I read this book in one sitting. The plot of this book had romance and suspense; I loved every minute of it.

I am surprised this book isn’t more popular, because it really is a well written and engaging piece of writing. The main character Laura was very relatable; I love the connection she has with her son (especially in the beginning of the book). Love interest Cameron helped Laura move on from the trials and tribulations of her life. Cameron has a secret though, that I was in no way expecting.

Sam (the son of Laura) and Brendan (the son of Cameron) really kept the laugh factor in this book. I think all of the characters were well developed, and they all added something unique to the story. I do recommend this book, and am very glad I got the chance to read and review it.

I love Kristy's work. I have to say her stories are not what I usually read, no explicit sex scenes, no foul language even in this story with a fair bit of violence it's not in your face gruesome but you still get the point. I love her characters and I especially love the humor. I've called it "snarky" in other reviews but that's not quite right. Her characters laugh at themselves, they use humor to diffuse tense situations, it's not mean they way she does it but it reminds me so much of the humor in our family, that it cracks me up every time.

Especially loved the interaction between the boys having raised 5 kids myself.

So yes there's suspense and a love story but so much more, characters you'll like, humor and people not afraid to laugh at themselves and people who have faced some really tough times but have picked themselves up and kept going until they found true love and happiness again.

Laying Low in Paradise was a mix of heart-warming romance and terrifying suspense.

Laura Keane and her son Sam are vacationing at Bois Blanc Island, as they do every summer. An accident leads Laura right into her neighbor Cameron’s arms. Once she lands there, neither of them look back. They both know they have found something special. At the same time, Cameron is at a loss with how to reach his son Brendan, who lost a leg in a car accident. To say Brendan isn’t doing well would be a major understatement. To top this, Cameron has a BIG secret. This secret is so big that it involves everyone on the island with the exception of Laura and her son.

The story opens with a prologue that will keep you baffled for a couple chapters. Then you get so wrapped up in what’s going on that you forget about it by the time it would actually aid in putting some of the puzzle pieces together to solve the mystery. I recommend rereading the prologue at the end.

After the prologue, the story jumps right on in with Laura and her twelve year old son, Sam. Laura and Sam have a great relationship, and I am especially fond of Sam. He reminds me so much of my oldest son. They are both the same age and have the whole mother-hen thing down to an art. Kristy James really nailed his character! You really feel the love and closeness shared between Laura and Sam.

Insert Cameron here. I loved Cameron’s personality as it related to Laura. I was especially pleased that he was adament about sharing his secret with her. He had no desire to build a relationship on secrets and lies. The only thing I didn’t like concerning Cameron was the lack of bond shown between him and his son. You got the sense he deeply loved his son, but it wasn’t shown as it had been between Laura and Sam. I think more bonding was shown between Laura and Brendan than between Cameron and Brendan. It almost appeared as if Brendan was second to Laura sometimes. Overall, the characters were well-developed and relatable. You care about them, laugh with them, and worry with them. There was some rarely used strong language and a few steamy scenes, but no sex for those of you that like a clean romance.

The plot was very intriguing and kept you on your toes trying to figure it out. It was definitely a shocker for me when Cameron’s secret came out! It wasn’t anything I had thought of, and it really wrapped up the fairytale romance nicely. The only thing I didn’t like was that it seemed to wrap up a little too quickly for me. I was almost finished, and I was thinking I was about to have a cliffhanger on my hands. But, no, it just ended rather abruptly.

Overall this was a very enjoyable read. There were times I laughed out loud and others I literally had goose bumps. It was a nice, clean fairytale mixed with mystery and suspense. I give it a strong 4 stars!! I will definitely be reading more from Kristy James!! I recommend this book to all of you who like a good romance!!

A sweet Cinderella story with a jealous family member that caused havoc among the royal family. Leaving a mother to believe she has lost every one dear to her heart. Fist killing a beloved wife and maiming the thirteen year old son to get to the throne. The building plot line keeping you in suspense in who this wicked person could be and will it work out at the end.
Widow Laura and her son Sam visited the island Bois Blanc for their annual summer holiday meeting widower Cameron and his son Brendan by accident. Literally. When she sprained her ankle Cameron came to the rescue for both mother and son and over the course of six weeks they became good friends.
Cameron had several friends close by fulfilling every desire and need they could have. Always feeling safe with the men around they set out to enjoy the holiday and the warm weather as much as possible.
The underlining tension build up as you learn more and more that Cameron and his friends are not who they say they are, hiding away from some demented person who want both him and his son dead. Security measures was taken to keep them safe and when Sam got badly hurt this team stepped up with another notch.
Laura's interaction with both boys were especially well written and I loved the way that she took time to connect and really love Brendan, accepting him as her own.
Sam, a beautiful young boy with a character that says he would make it far, understanding more than a thirteen year old should.
When feelings started to grow between the two of them things becomes serious. Cameron knew that Laura would be his wife no matter what any one said and revealed to her their secret. A secret that shocked her, chasing him away to get to terms with all the secrets but a specially getting used to her new title if she decide to say yes to his proposal.
There were a few comical situations that lifted the seriousness of the story line making it more believable, the characters were interesting and well developed and the plot line giving a edge of suspense that keeps you wondering.
A very good romance story that you could read in a day leaving you relaxed and entertained till the last page. In my opinion the money spend to buy the book worth it.

I ABSOLUTELY loved this book!
I fell in love with every well written character and each ones charm.
I finished the book in a day and would of finished in hours if I wasn't so busy with my family.

I, like most readers, love a little mystery thrown in with my love story. A little something to leave in the back of your mind to wonder about and drive you to finish the book quickly just to find out what that mystery is. And trust me this one you’ll never guess. Like I never saw it coming. I was thinking along the lines of Cameron being an FBI agent or in the CIA and someone in the agency was trying to kill him to keep him quite. yeah,… no. But when you learn the secret it will make it all the better. So I won’t spoil it here.

With that said, Cameron is amazing. He has it all going for him, all except the lying thing.
◾sweet
◾funny
◾ romantic
◾ a wonderful father
◾ someone who loves Laura’s son as much as his own

His is the picture perfect man any single mom wants in her life. Laura lost her husband in the war. He’s been gone for 4 years and Cameron is the first man to make her ‘hot’ she wants him, but at the same time the fear of losing him holds her back. Can they pull together and be a family? Or will they let their fears keep them apart?

When you start this book you see immediately that there will be some drama, and I couldn’t wait for the drama to happen. And when it did? DISAPPOINTING. I thought there would be more. A kidnapping maybe? Or at least us seeing more of the action. I felt let down, here we were built up for that BIG moment of fighting and gun fire and hey! what a let down! I wanted to LOVE this book and I did up til then. Ah. Once we hit that point it was down hill for me. Cameron takes Laura and Sam home with him to meet his parents, his mom and sister are pissed that he faked his death and didn’t tell them, AND THEN TO COME HOME WITH A WOMAN? I wanted to reach out and slap all of them.

ALL in all though this is a really good book. The characters are very likable my favorite being Sam, Laura’s son. Still I can’t wait to read book 2!

Laying low in paradise
By Kristy K. James

Laura Keane and her son are close.
Peas and carrots would be a good way to describe them. Devoted to one another. I loved the relationship of mother and son immediately. I have to say though the sadness behind their lives is heartbreaking,
The loss of a husband and father, the loss of them to war. Heartbreaking!
Laura and Sam cope and it's time for Summer on the island. Laura is a writer. Her son Sam is a sweet caring little man.
Surrounded by a beautiful lake on Bois Blanc Island. Summers, memories and peace- each summer it awaited them. What and why this trip would be different well this year it all will change.

Cameron and his son Brendan are staying in a rental. They are not alone. Colin and Fin- friends and family. They wanted quiet, they wanted to blend in, they needed to hide out. Although fate had other plans. They have sadness and loss in their lives too. That is one common bond between the two main characters.
This story is full of mystery, intrigue and suspense. I started this thinking it was going to be a sweet love story, which it was.. Ended up being so much more. We have secrets, plots and assassination attempts. Things are not what they seem and lies are told. The problem is in the middle of all of this. People heal and find a way to let their broken hearts mend.
It's a wonderful read with a good message. Love can be found and second chances do happen. Your heart can repair and you might just actually get your Prince Charming after all. Do you believe in fairy tales? Read it.. Have your piece of paradise. Beautifully written and interesting storyline/characters.
Take a chance and see if Ms. James can make your heart melt?

PS.. Ms. James I wanted to talk to you about Nolan... I need a doctor. Do you think you could arrange a house call?

Inhaltsangabe:

Mein Fazit:
5 von 5 Sternen - ein wahres Schmankerl!!!

I absolutely loved “Laying Low in Paradise”. I could relate so easily with the main character Laura. She was so driven, caring, and a great mom. From the book description I didn’t expect to like this book as much as I did. I am also a sucker for a good cover that just jumps out at me and yells “read me”—personally this book cover didn’t do much for me. The only thing I may suggest to the author to make this book more popular would be to maybe re-write the blurb, and get a new cover.

Truly, this was a great book and I hate to see it so unrecognized. Don’t be fooled by its cover or blurb because this book has some amazing writing that you don’t want to miss out on. The character development is inspiring to me as a writer. I feel like the author must have had crystal clear images mapped out of each character and stuck by them.

There are twists and turns in this book that you won’t see coming. There is romance, a laugh factor brought to you by two of my favorite characters, Sam who is Laura’s son, and Brendan who is the son of Laura’s love interest, Cameron. I do highly recommend this very well written book!

This book started out a little slow, but eventually picked up and turned out to be great! Laura had lost her husband, Jake, to the war and all she had left was her son, Sam. And every summer they visited the Chalet. She refused to sell it after Jake's death. This summer would change everything. There she would meet Cameron.

Cameron was just trying to lay low. He wasn't looking for a relationship, but it seems that him and Laura have a lot more in common than they thought! He wasn't suppose to interact with the other guests on the island, but circumstances have brought them together and now he can't stop thinking of her! There's not point in fighting it so he spends as much time as he can with her.

I kept trying to think of what could possibly have Cameron hiding out on an island that he had to keep it secret. So many scenarios played out in my head. And boy was this one a doozie! I did not think of this one at all. It threw me for a loop! There are not any hot sex scenes in this book, but there is a blooming romance. And it was wonderful to read through this and see it all unfold. I give this book 4 stars!

Laying Low in Paradise kept me wondering what the big secret was. When it was finally revealed, I was SO not expecting it.

Written and set beautifully, Kristy is very descriptive with her scenes and has excellent dialogue between the characters.

My only complaint is the copy I received had duplicated sentences at page breaks a couple of times. This error did not take away from the story what-so-ever.

Thinking the worst case scenario for Laura and her son Sam by getting involved with the neighbors, I really felt for them. Not knowing what the big hush hush was all about and the mention of being a fugitive at one point made me instantly think "mafia". But I couldn't have been further from the truth.

I really enjoyed reading Laying Low in Paradise and recommend it to those who like light romance and chick lit.

Sweet, clean romance with an unexpected twist. Cameron and his friends are hiding on the island for reasons you are never going to guess. Seriously, I never suspected that would be the plot twist. The only negative I would say about Laying Low in Paradise is that it could have been a little more developed in the middle. However, that didn't detract from my enjoyment of this book. I think it is refreshing that, although both Laura and Cameron already have children, there is no sex in this book, as both of them believe in waiting until marriage.

You will enjoy this book if you like clean romance and if you appreciate a good read that gives you a little something more than the usual plot line.

Kristy pens "Laying Low in Paradise" in a well written romantic suspense plot filled with twists, turns, and a touch of humor that kept my interest through out the book. Her characters were strong, relate-able and had great chemistry between them. A totally enjoyable read that should be on all romance fans TBR list.

The story was fine

It started out very good, but then the author just seemed to lose interest. Love at first sight, in a widower crown Prince is a big stretch as it is. The fact that she was stuck on becoming a princess, not on moving to a country she had never heard of, as also weird. But what I really didn't like was the huge build up to the attack, and then 2 pages of "quiet gunfire" and the threat is over, let's get married.

Nice clean romance

Very nicely done. Intrigue and romance with a chance for happily ever after. Laura and her son travel to their island vacation home for the summer. They have some wonderful neighbors but they have secrets, Cameron most of all. Can she and Cameron overcome the obstacles in order to find each other? I liked it !

Low 3

The story has plenty of plot. However, it is lacking in character arc for both the main characters. The only character that has any real internal struggle is Brendan. The others are just perfect and their relationship is smooth sailing really. So overall I feel totally boah about the book and don't care about any of them. Except Brendan. Maybe he should have been the MC.

Well written story about Laura Keane and her son, Sam. They decided to vacation at Boinc Island and as they did every summer before her husband was killed. There is an accident that leads Laura right to her neighbor Cameron and his son Brendan, who lost a leg from a car accident. There are a lot of dynamic and suspenseful events among this sweet romance.

Loved it

I felt a little foolish when I didn't remember the name of the novel with the word prince. I thought the guys were FBI or under cover police.
So when I found out he was a Prince, it became a totally different story.
I loved the characters. And the love of the couple and their sons.

Good Read

Not just another commoner meets incognito royal and falls in love before his true identity becomes known to her. Suspense, danger, and a mysterious assassin spice up the story. Add a teenage son from each side and you have a clean enjoyable tale

I enjoyed this book but...

This is the first book I've read by this author. While the prologue was cryptic, I surmised the story from it...royals go into hiding after an attack. The author developed the characters and scenes well, but the story line fell through in several areas.

Sam falls on a sharp rock near the lighthouse, gashes his leg, needs a tourniquet applied by a 13 yo, and loses a lot of blood so that he needs nearly 3 pints transfusion. He would have needed to hit an artery for this kind of blood lose and would have been unlikely to survive it. Brenden had to get back to the chalets limping on his prosthetic, two miles away, and bring help back, which happened to include a universal blood donor and a doctor qualified to perform field surgery in the sand of the beach. Sam is then up and running around in nearly no time at all. Author's time line is off. Really too much over the top.

75% into the book and Laura and Sam have been on the island for 3 months. Sam would have needed to have been back home and started school four weeks prior to that. The author's time line is off, again.

The cover shows a man, presumably the prince, wearing dog tags. Very odd, since there wasn't any mention of any military service.

I enjoyed the story when viewed as fantasy, it was mostly grammatically correct with few proofreading errors. I have the second book in the series in my free library, but I didn't warm to Nolan in this first book, so I won't be reading it. I read this one as I do enjoy books with royal characters.
