This title When the Sun Goes Down and other stories from Africa and Beyond is an anthology of sixteen short stories by Emilia Ilieva and Waveney Olembo. 16 stories by international writers.
One of my least favorite stories was the title story, I loved 'Mirror' the most, maybe because I never really got it. Was it a dream sequence or an illusion? When I reread this, that is the story I will read first to see if all these years will have changed my perspective. The collection was perfect for high school, the stories simple enough to wrap our heads around and mostly plot driven. I think the short story collections done before like, "Half a Day" were better that this one. Maybe because I read those for pleasure while I read this one with exams at the back of my mind. That usually takes all the fun out of reading for me.
Ah, high school was such a wonderful time. Finished this within a week of receiving it then had to spend 2yrs arguing with the literature teacher, dear Ms. Nichols, on what each story meant. Loved that story about the nomads who could get out of their marriage by running to the house of the man they actually wanted to be with. Two Stories of a House caused such a lengthy argument in class. The teacher was wrong but she didn't budge from her interpretation. And When The Sun Goes Down cost me an A in KCSE because I kept using the word 'inculcate' even though it didn't mean what I thought it meant.
A nice compilation of stories which introduce you to writers from almost everywhere in the world. Michael Anthony's Sandra Street was the best story for me. It made me really think about my observation and perception of different things around me.
An interesting collection of short stories from Africa and beyond; covering a wide range of today's challenges- corruption, gender issues, HIV/AIDS and a lot more
