I received this book for free in exchange for an honest review. This does not affect my opinion of the book or the content of my review.I purchased Warrior’s Bride as a freebie in 2012, but never got around to reading it until now. The purchase of this occurred because of the cover and my interest in the Native American culture. Thanks to Thrifty Thursday hosted by Anne @Books of My Heart, I finally had the chance to read Warrior’s Bride.
Warrior Bride, which features Colton Lonetree and Katarina Herelius, was an average read. I didn’t enjoy it as much as I thought I would. The characters frustrated me with their woe is me attitude. The story started on a good note, but by the middle my frustrations with the characters grew exponentially…. with the hero proving to be the most frustrating of the two.
There were a lot of misunderstandings in the story, most of which I found unnecessary. Frankly, communication would have solved most of these issues. Colton has abandonment issues and because of this, he treats the heroine like crap for most of the story. Now on learning his backstory, I couldn’t for the life of me understand his reasoning.
His mother gave him up for adoption and a white couple adopted him. They loved and treated him well and gave him all the best things in life they could afford. However, the one thing they could not give him was knowledge of his heritage. He despised his biological mother and showed no interest in learning her reasons for giving him up. So many times I wanted to, if it was as at all possible, to give him a good talking to. His actions made no sense and then he wonders at his inability to cultivate healthy relationships.
Katarina also had her share of issues. She’s the kind of person to run at what she perceives as being the first sign of trouble. This issue arose from her experience in a previous relationship.
I loved how they met, and the events which followed that meeting made for a great story. However, there were moments where I wanted to pull my hair out!!! The story had a good start, but the middle did not continue on the same path. Also, the pacing and flow were off and parts of the story could have been omitted. The best part of Warrior’s Bride was the start and the end. This review was originally posted on Totally Addicted to Reading

Very sweet love story. The plot is a little slow at times, but the vulnerable characters of Cole Lonetree and Rini are both endearing.
I've read several of Nina Bruhn/Nikita Black's books now, and it is funny that each is very different from the others. In fact, I would not guess that they were written by the same person.
Black's book, Slave to Love is one of my all time favorites (a scorching hot romance and suspense thriller).
This was my first and certainly not my last book by Nina Bruhns. I bought the book as I am interested in the native culture of America and this one was modern and not the normal historical. I absolutely loved it! I was caught from the very steamy beginning to the end. Rina and Cole had a bond that can't be denied. I loved the passion that Cole had from trying to find Rina after there encounter. The struggle these two had to over come in order to be together. Awesome job!
It needs a good edit and a rewrite, then it might be good. The plot was okay, and the writing wasn't bad, but I have problems with it. There are typo's like "ski" instead of "skin", "arts" instead of "arms". Bugged me when he's talking to his ex-wife and not telling his current wife about it, and then suddenly they're at a family gathering and his current wife knows, but we never heard him tell her. Then it causes problems, yet again, later. Also, this story is getting dragged out so long, it's losing the plot. It is about 100 pages too long. And although I get the tortured past bit, the author took it too far. I've checked 3 times now to see how close to the end I am, and I'm only 76% done reading the ebook. At this rate, I might give up before it ends. They had the HEA ending back at about 36%, now it's just going to pot, and I have to stick around to see if they can fix it. :(
The writing is good and not too many mistakes. However, the story goes on and on, like a repetitive coitus interruptus. After one hot night she is pregnant. Until the very end of the book they almost get back together until she thinks, he wouldn't love her unless he says so. Backing off. Soon closer again. He thinks: women always leave me so will she. Backing off. This repeats many times until at the very end of the book he finally says it. So boring this endless 'she thinks, he thinks'. Not for me
beautiful wtory of two hurting heroes. they had to overcome untrust, ancient and deep fear of abandonment for him and of betrayal and unlove for her. I loved the fact that this book handeled an important and sad issue for native american communities : adoption/ abusive adoption. I loved his struggle to discover his roots and the importance of doing that, but also of his love for his adopted parents. I loved also the humor of some parts of the dialogue and the love shared among his family.
Rini goes to a powwow to help her nephew with a project for his boy scout group and meets the warrior in all his regalia. She watches him perform a dance with hoops and later he finds her drawing his lodge and invites her inside.
Story of a native American man who had been adopted by a white family as a child, and how that affected him as an adult. A love story that was not easy, but worth it.
An explosive meeting at a POW WOW results in a surprise pregnancy. Neither one knows the name of the other, until a chance meeting at a lawyers office. Can a man who can't give love lose everything? I've read this one several times and it still grabs the heart.
This one was hard to rate for me. I felt like there were moments that were really great but also moments that were really confusing or frustrating.
I loved the opening! I'm not usually a fan of love at 1st site, but I thought in this case it was very sweet. The H/h bump into each other at a Native American festival. The H is a lawyer who is dressed as a tribal warrior becauses he teaches tribal dance on the Rez. The h is just recently out of a very emotionally abusive relationship and is at the fair enjoying the day and really savoring her freedom and her future. They spend the day catching site of one another but never really having a chance to talk, before finally the H stumbles on the h sketching his tee-pee. They share a few heated hours alone, and the H asks the h to wait for him, but a misunderstanding sends her fleeing. The story picks up 6 months later when the H spots her at a lawyers office.
Typically the "big misunderstanding" trope is annoying to me, but doesn't necessarily ruin a story. However this book had several "misunderstandings", which I found very frustrating. I could understand the h thinking/feeling the way she did, and even her initial flight made sense, but her later flight was annoying. I wanted her to be grown up enough to stay and talk instead of running away, again.
The H was probably my biggest issue with this book. I loved him in the opening, but his character seemed to deteriorate as the story progressed. I think the reason for this was his backstory It just didn't make sense to me. If you're going to make a man a huge jerk, who refuses to admit his feelings for the h and hurts her repeatedly out of fear... I need to buy the reason for the fear. Sexual abuse, neglect, a series of terrible experiences with hurtful women .. Sure. His back story? Nope.
Having said ALL that, I still ended up liking the story! (shocking, I know). So, I'd still recommend it, hang ups and all :)
WARRIOR'S BRIDE was a fantastic read! I don't know how to put my thoughts into words deserving of Nina Bruhns' impressive story. She starts off with her heroine, Rini, literally bumping into the hero, the very sexy Colton, all dressed up in his regalia at a pow wow. It is love at first sight as these two connect in the deepest of ways and later has Colton staking his claim on her believing he has finally found the woman of his dreams. The next day Rini sees something that is not what it seems and runs off without explanation. Both are heartbroken, angry and feeling betrayed over this misunderstanding and with no way of finding each other.
Later Rini discovers she is carrying Colt's child and is determined to keep her baby, but allows her sister to convince her to at least talk to an adoption lawyer about her options. While there Colton sees her, realizes her condition, and guesses her intentions. Yet another misunderstanding. Furious she would give away his child he confronts her, threatens taking the baby from her, and eventually offers her a marriage of convenience which she agrees to.
Right from the start I loved both Colton and Rini. Their attraction was intense and so sensual. Their first night together was smoldering hot and it was clear they were meant for each other. The misunderstanding the next day had me groaning over the loss. When they finally meet again in the lawyer's office it was just as frustrating. Despite the fact they both obviously still had strong feelings for one another pride, stubbornness, tempers, and insecurities get in the way. Both Colt and Rini already had trust issues which made their situation more complicated even though the true love they felt for each other was clear to everyone around them. Bruhns does a wonderful job of allowing the reader to see both sides' perspectives, gives us great secondary characters who both help and hinder our lovers as they try to make their relationship work, and a plot twist at the end I thought was superbly written. 4.5 stars!
The first half of this work was a page turner. The second half, I skipped around a lot. Cole had to be one of the most immature characters I have ever read and way too stubborn for any woman "not" to leave him behind in the dust. Sad part about him was he didn't have a clue these personality defects made women run away from him. Yes he had hang ups and yes he needed to deal with them but damn. There was way too much anger in this book. As for Katarina, she slept with Cole to get over a former relationship with her ex-David who she described as being as sensitive as a dish towel but whom her mother adored. She also runs away after seeing Cole with other ladies the morning after they had sex w/o waiting to find out who they were. Yes she had hang ups but she got into this with eyes wide open so why be so hurt? There were times I wanted to send both to counseling because they were wearing me down on their roller coaster romance. I found it difficult to believe Cole would marry someone he initially swore he never wanted to love. And then ask for all rights to the child as a condition for marriage. And she accepted marriage but not signing the child over to the father should something happen to her IF they weren't married. The last half of the book did me in to the point I almost stopped reading it. She left him, he stayed away, relatives butted in, Katarina's own sister urges Cole to go caveman and reclaim his wife, Cole's long, not so lost mother reveals herself to Katarina and suddenly its hugs all around. How poignant ...not! These character's needed reality background checks, bad.
I enjoyed reading this so much although I can't figure out why they call it a 'western contemporary romance' since it is nothing western but still it was such a good read. It was in a way kinda sad. Katarina and Cole meet at a powwow where Cole is dressed as a tribal leader. Its love at first sight and they spend an amazing night in his tee-pee. The next morning, Katarina see's Cole surrounded by women, kissing him and whispering in his ear. Katarina was in a loveless relationship and cheated on alot so understandingly, she leaves him without a word. When Cole realizes she's gone, all he knows is she left him with no explanation. Cole has had more than one women leave him before and always has distance himself so he won't be hurt again.
Months later, Katarina is pregnant and Cole finds her in an indian adoption agency. Neither can trust the other but the explosive feelings are still there. It's painful to read because they love each other so much but can't seem to get over the fear and pain of past relationships to reach for each other and discover true love.
The only thing that bugs me is the adoption agency situation. Katarina has no intention of giving up her baby no matter what but her sister is pushing her to consider giving the baby up for adoption. The way the author writes it you know she isn't going to give the baby up, even over her dead body, yet she still goes to check it out and talk to them which was just odd to me. The book is full of emotion and shopuld be labeled as a true love story!
I always gripe when there is a one time baby plot device in a story but I admit it is the best way to start off my favorite plot line; the married-then-falls-in-love story, so this is not a negative review. Complaints stop now. This is a story of Cole and Rini. They are damaged by their childhood and earlier relationship experiences. Although she was never physically abused by her ex-fiance, the verbal and emotional abuse is worse because of its insidious long term effects. I did like the native American aspects and issues that were added to fill out this story. It all comes down to taking a chance at love after being seriously disappointed. There is a fun love-at-first-sight start which leads to a hot and heavy lodge (tee-pee) episode. Yum! Then we cut to 7 months later and an accidental meeting which makes it clear that the couple only had that one experience and they didn't even get each other's names before separating. The scene that they both go to birthing classes was really heartfelt. It really gave me hope for a beautiful HEA. I wasn't disappointed. There is a mention of the Christmas holiday season that is coincidentally the timing when they find each other again, but this is in no may a christian romance because there are some spicy moments, this is not erotic level but soft and sweet. This was easy, full sized novel and fun to read. I recommend it, especially if you like mix race love stories (I'd like to read more of the those!). 2 and half stars
An interesting plot. Both are damaged characters who have issues to get over. They both unwittingly hit right on each others issues. I like damaged leads add to that having both of our leads damaged and I expect the story to get complex and emotional. The story went a little to slow for me to get very emotionally involved. Long periods of time with no progress of any kind between our leads. I don't know that I want to read about their settling into long ruts of putting up with each other even when they are not doing anything to stand up for themselves or make things right. Plus there are a few times that I felt like something important happens off script and I'm feeling a little left out. Why do the good moments in this book never get page time. The transition from POV to POV at times could have been smoother and the transition in large gaps of time could have been smoother. I was also disappointed that the only one who's problems seemed to be really addressed were Cole's. I would like to see them really work through their problems. While there were some emotional moments we didn't get that really involved feeling and our characters working things out didn't involve them talking about everything. I hate instant happy moments. I think it requires some work. I was glad with the talk at the end with Rini's "Babysitter" It was long over due.
I BELIEVE THAT every successful Fiction Romance book should include PERIL, at least 2 or 3 ACTION & ADVENTURE situations and some CONFLICT and of course L'AMOUR. Too much CONFLICT between 2 people causes too much whining. Thus this book.
Not 5 stars because of the overuse of the word Lord and the word God and overuse of CONFLICT leading to a whole lot of whining leading to a slow paced story. Great story line non the less.
A BETTER WAY TO HAVE WRITTEN THE BOOK: Everything up to the point after she has baby. She runs away with baby due to misunderstandings thus, CONFLICT. He angrily searches for her to get his baby back and uses every means possible (family, private eye, himself, friends, etc. She goes from one town or city to another and even across State lines to hide. She runs into some really BAD GUYS. They want to get rid of her and sale the baby on the black market. One of the guys in the group is attracted to her and tries to figure out how to help her escape with the baby. He helps to keep her safe from the other men. Eventually she and baby are rescued. All misunderstandings and conflicts are resolved. L'AMOUR. The End.
I loved the way this story started out, with the Native American Powwow, and the dancing warriors, and Cole's instant attraction to Katarina. His seduction of her was beautiful, and his love at first sight was sweet.
The first Big Misunderstanding was understandable, I guess, coming from her point of view, and anyway, the story pretty much had to go that way to continue with the premise.
In real life, Cole is a lawyer, and six months later he sees Katarina at an associate's office. This other lawyer specializes in adoptions of Native American children, and Katarina is six months pregnant. He finds out who she is, and serves her notice that he intends to block the adoption and sue for custody of his child.
And that's about the best part of the book. After that it goes kind of haywire, too much back and forth, too much misunderstandings.
Hated the thing with his mother. That didn't even really make sense. His family would have made him listen to them whether he wanted to or not.
I would give it 2.5 stars, because it was really just okay, but since I really really liked the first part, I rounded on up to 3 stars.
A good love story but with much sexual explicitness I was well-written but quite drawn out. It would have been better without the indulging sex scenes that added nothing to the story. "Rina had several issues from a dysfunctional childhood. After a miserable engagement for years with an ungrateful, displeased lover , she discovered his unfaithfulness and decided to create a new life for herself. In her attempt to become a new person she went to a "powwow' and discovered an intriguing warrior who immediately was attracted to her as well. She was mesmerized by him and followed him to his performance then to his teepee afterwards. from there is escalates. Although he seem confident an arrogant , he has serious abandonment issues which has kept him from the female population except for brief flirtations...untill "Rina" came along. Their relationship was powerful, then non-existent, then stormy. How would it end?
3.5 Stars. This is an interesting story about a woman who has recently broken up with an emotionally abusive fiance and meets a hot Amer-Indian warrior at a Pow-wow. In his costume and war-paint he is nothing like the lawyer she meets six months later in a power suit.
Rini fled from Cole when she saw the dancer surrounded by female fans and believed he was a cheat like her ex. Their reunion is complicated by the fact Rini was pressured into visiting a baby adoption lawyer by her sister who hoped to adopt Rini's unborn baby.
This rings all sorts of alarm bells for Cole who was adopted as a baby by a non-Amer-Indian family and struggled with his identity as a teen.
There are lots of secondary characters in this book but none that stand out much as spin off romances.
I enjoyed the story with a different kind of hero and a heroine who grew through her interaction with him.
The first half of this book was a page turner. The second half, I skipped around a lot. Cole had to be one of the most immature characers I have ever read and way too stubborn for any woman "not" to leave him behind in the dust. Sad part about him was he didn't have a clue his personality defects made women run away from him. Yes, he had hang ups and yes, he needed to deal with them but dang. There was way too much anger in this book. As for Katarina, she slept with Cole to get over a former relationship with her ex-David who she described as being as sensitive as a dish towel but whom her mother adored. Go figure. I felt sorry for these characters because of their inability to communicate with each other but that is part of the charm, no?
I liked parts of this book. But I really can't get emotionally invested in a book when the plot is so inane. These two just needed to sit down and have a heart to heart. He needed to tell her why he was so hesitant to love her (afraid she'd leave like his mother did) and she needed to tell him she didn't feel worthy of his love/affection because of her smarmy ex-fiancé. I ended up skimming to the end. Way to much teasing of "will they tell each other their feelings or run away?" and not enough content. I do like the author's style of writing and will try some of her other books. But this one drove me crazy.
it has everything I like in a romance novel. I liked how the story develops, how both male and female characters grow through the novel and overcome their fears and old demons. For me this is the message face your fears and overcome them... maybe is corny or cliche but that's the only way to grow, to be wiser and to be happy.
This book made me laugh, it got me one or two tears out (ok.. a few more).. and at some chapters, my heart went squishy.
So... if you are a hopeless romantic you'll love this novel. Besides is hot, sexy and funny.
Started out great! and then went South for me. My feelings for Cole went from Love to Hate. I like some conflict, and actually expect a story to have its share, however in this story it basically took over. From beginning to end. It was exhausting. Cole's strong opposition to admitting his feelings got very tiresome as well...and frankly just didn't make sense, but he did redeem himself in the end so I'm glad I stuck it out
Nina truely knows how to tell a story keeping you glued to the pages until late at night. Her characters always troubled, not able to trust, but good, nice, lovable. Throwing in some issues as adoption, Native Americans, unwanted pregnancy, lack of self-confidence she creates a painfull love story making the reader want to shake the two lovers and scream:"Wake up, open your eyes and start finally talking about your feelings and fears!"
Warrior's Bride by Nina Bruhns was the FIRST romance novel that I EVER read. It's a book I have read about 30 times now and I love it more every time. My taste has changed a lot since this book, it's one of the 'sweeter' books I've read. It's more on the emotional side of the spectrum but it a beautiful way. My paperback copy is beyond readable after all the times I've read it, pages falling out, tape on the cover, mended pages. It's just a superb read that I never get enough of.
I enjoyed the book very much, it contained vulnerable characters with realistic misunderstandings. Emotionally satisfying.
(I believe this was originally a Harlequin/Silhouette book that the author got her rights back to, updated and self pubbed. (I could be wrong.) But nicely updated and well worth reading.)
From the get-go, this book warmed my heart. The connection between the main characters was so real, so palpable, I felt myself pining for them when they left. After their initial one-night stand, and the subsequent meeting much later, the story wove a tale of lost and found love, and it is a book I would highly recommend for anyone to read!
