I've Got You, Babe

Vanessa Tower has never done anything reckless in her life -- then again, she's never met anyone like Christopher "Crash" Dunmoor. The man spends his days jumping out of airplanes, canoeing down raging rivers, doing anything for a thrill -- and prim, proper, studious Vanessa doesn't need that sort of excitement. But the sexy adventurer can ignite sparks in her with just a smile, something Vanessa finds most troubling ... and impossible to ignore. A confirmed loner with no ties and painful secrets, Crash knows wild is the only way to live. Yet this straightlaced lady he's gotten involved with is turning out to be a bigger turn-on than adrenaline! It's crazy to think he could ever have anything in common with this gorgeous bookworm. So why is his heart telling him that holding her, touching her, and tasting her would be the most tantalizing adventure of all?

Karen Kendall is the author of many disasters and nine romantic comedies. She grew up in Austin, Texas, and credits her early interest in writing to several teachers and her mother, a professor of comparative literature.

A graduate of Smith College, Karen studied the mysteries of modern and contemporary art before enrolling in a masters program in Museum Education, with the aim of teaching children about art. She worked for several museums and galleries before following her lifelong dream and completing a novel.

Karen is still a big fan of children's art, but she now writes full time and lives in Florida with her husband, Don, and attack-cat Boo, who turns up her nose at chicken and fish but adores asparagus and mint-chocolate-chip ice cream.

I picked up this book at the library prior to my trip west and just finished it in the car today. What a find! It’s an older book by Karen Kendall, but a goodie if I do say so myself.

Vanessa Tower is a Art History professor at an all-girls college in Massachusetts. Her specialty is the life and works of Thomas Dunmoor. So when she meets his son, she’s unpleasantly surprised to find out that he’s a piece of work. He’s reckless and completely uninterested in his grandfather’s legacy, but a dying grandmother has brought the two of them together. Forced to learn about his grandfather, Christopher “Crash” Dunmoor ends up as the student to Professor Tower, while having to fight off advances from drooling co-eds.

What a find! This book was written from a very familiar point of view–almost as if the author was confiding her little asides to you as you read along. I found myself laughing out loud through most of the book, which after finishing The Magicians was a nice change. I tend to gravitate toward the side stories in some of these books, and this one was no exception. If you find a copy of this book, and you need a laugh, I highly recommend you give it a try. I’m going to be checking out other books by Kendall in the future because she sounds like a hoot.

synopsis:
vanessa has been asked by crash's grandmother to bring him back to the family fold after a fight caused him to leave and never look back. vanessa is an art professor and does her best to be buttoned down, so that she won't be compared to her mother, who left when she was a baby. crash is wild and hasn't met an adventure he hasn't liked. his grandfather died, and his grandmother has cancer, and she would like to leave crash his grandfather's paintings, but crash doesn't want anything to do with them, nor does he want anyone else to have them, especially the college that vanessa works for. his grandmother makes it a condition that crash enroll in the course that vanessa is teaching on his grandfather.

what i liked: i liked the relationship between crash and his grandmother, even though she had hurt him years ago during the fallout. the passion that vanessa had for art was refreshing to see, as well. the attraction between the two main characters was interesting, as it seemed to go against both of their characters. vanessa never did anything wild, and crash never settled down.

what i didn't like: vanessa seemed to go out of her way to not be like her mother by repressing her personality, rather than just being herself.

4.5 stars.

Great story. Cute, fun, and funny. The pace was maintained throughout which is always a plus for me and so rare to find. I didn't really connect with the characters. They were just there. However, I don't look at that as a negative. They were fleshed out well enough, I understood them and could envision them. But I was so emerged in the story that I didn't really break things down and look at any one part individually. I didn't realize I did that until I was ready to figure my score sheet.

Anyway, the end felt rushed and was sort of cheesy. But, in a way, I'm okay with that. I was ready for the book to be done. My attention span was pretty maxed out even though I enjoyed the story. I kind of wish the secondary romance had gotten more play time. It kind of seemed pointless here. Overall, this book was still a great read. It's worth a reread as well, so onto my keeper shelf it goes.

This is the first book I have read by this author, and I thoroughly enjoyed it. Though half the book was spent talking about their hormones, I felt like the inner dialogue was pretty funny, as well as the dialogue between the characters. I liked the story line, and I liked the supporting characters just as much as the main characters. I felt that they really worked well together and accentuated each other nicely. Where I won't rush out and read everything this author has ever written, I would gladly read another one of hers if I ran across it.

Beach read....opposites attract...chick lit. Fun little brainless love story. But I liked the ending the best!
