3.5 Runaway stars!

*Just an FYI- this novel includes the prequel novella, Seduction & Temptation, so it’s two for the price of one. It gives a lot of Lola and Layton’s background so it’s a must read before starting this*

Jessica Sorensen gives us a fast paced story full of secrets, lies, action and mystery. With some steam and romance, it ended up begin a well rounded read. After reading the prequel to this story, I was hoping I would have some of my questions answered. I did get a few answers, but I think I developed even more questions while reading this one.
It’s a life I can’t let anyone know about because, if I allow too many people to know… or draw too much attention to myself, then they’ll discover my real name. What’s more, if the wrong people found out my real one, I’d be dead.

Lola Anders isn’t Lola Anders anymore. She’s not sure if she can ever be her again. She’s been on the run for two years. The people she is running from are seriously dangerous.

Lola feels like she has to leave her entire life behind her. Even the one thing she wishes she didn’t have to let go of…. Layton Everett. Layton is someone she can’t think about. When she does, she is filled with want, despair, need. Lola must stay emotionless to survive. She’s left her entire past behind her, but what happens when someone from her past discovers her? Will she be able to survive him?

This isn’t Jessica Sorensen’s normal weepy read. It was low on emotion, yet high on action and mystery. As much as I enjoyed parts of this, I never felt a true connection to Lola. Still, it was an interesting read. I really liked Layton and the way it ended makes me want to give the next one a go to see what happens next!

I'm in between on the stars to give this book, so I will settle for three.

I found Lola VERY annoying. She was weak, she was rude, she wasn't very smart and considering what her family was, she should have been all of those things.

In fact. We are total several times, how she was raised to protect herself. She wasn't given a lot of information on what her family did, but she did know they were a mob family. With that said. When things happen to her, as a result of her father's actions I expected her to kick ass.

I almost found her weak. She freezes up at the worst possible moment and it all just snow balls from there.

I liked Layton, I liked how much he seemed to care for Lola, but I really just didn't care for her. So this book was hard for me.

There were some spelling errors, but I am not a error snob. I am sure it's hard to write a book so I don't nit pick, but they were there.

This book contains the 0.5 of the series, so if you buy this and you haven't read that (I hadn't most of the time you don't have to read those 0.5's to get book 1) you will want to read that.

Years ago, when New Adult books first came out - one of my favorite authors and must-buy was Jessica Sorensen. I just loved all her books and the NA edginess to them and the characters were easy to fall for and they were all damaged and flawed. The only downside to Jessica Sorensen though was that the majority of her series was left unfinished which is disappointing to readers especially when the books end in cliff-hangers like this book. In Sins and Secrets which is a series that is no longer published we meet Lola and Layton who have been best friends since they were 8 years old. They have been involved in a shooting of one of the other drug families and now on the run to survive, they both went their separate ways. Now two years later Layton is presumed dead and Lola is living a life under a pseudonym, however, her past is about to catch up on her as someone is sending notes to both her jobs mentioning her past and real name. If that wasn't bad enough, Layton has popped up and with him is a girl who looks like Lola. But Lola was an only child, right? Now the two have hit not just from one family but all of them. Can the pair work together with the newcomers to save themselves and bring down the empires once and for all? Find out in Sins and Secrets by Jessica Sorensen.

This version, available at all of the major booksellers, also includes the prequel novella, Seduction & Temptation, so if you haven’t read it, you’ll have the opportunity. You’ll definitely want to read it, for it provides a lot of background info, especially into the depth of the relationship between Layton and Lola.

Lola is the only daughter of a powerful Boston drug lord. At age fourteen she was witness to the suspicious death of her mother by means of a heart attack and has lived her life with the notion that her death was by no means “natural causes”. The only other family Lola has is her aunt Glady, her mother’s sister. Her best friend is another fourteen-year-old boy named Layton, the son of a rival drug lord.

Seven years after the death of her mother she is finally sorting through her belongings when she finds a letter to a mystery man in the pocket of one of her mother’s jackets. The letter states that her child (whom Lola assumes to be her, considering she has no siblings) is not actually the daughter of the man she married, but is the daughter of the man the letter is addressed to. Her mother is concerned that her daughter is she is following in the footsteps of the father that raised her, and will take over the family business, something she didn’t want for her children, especially considering she gave Lola her maiden name Anders, instead of her married name, Anelli.

Layton is the eldest son of the Everett family, who is aligned with the Catherlson family, direct enemies of the Anelli family. Layton goes to work for the Catherlson family and Lola takes this as a betrayal after a lifetime of friendship. When Layton is a part of kidnapping Lola under a ruse of helping her father pay up for a debt he owes, it seems that the relationship between Lola and Layton is over, unsalvageable. Layton once professed his love to Lola however she was unable to give her love in return. While Layton still loves Lola, will his duplicity and loyalty to Frankie Catherlson prove too great a challenge to recover from? Or will Layton prove to be the only person Lola can really trust?

I don’t read a whole lot of romantic suspense and I read even less mafia type storylines (though I love me some mob movies), however this one had me hooked from the beginning. While both Lola and Layton had certain aspects to their characters that I didn’t necessarily care for (I’m hoping that in subsequent volumes they’ll be more well-developed and get into a little more of where their motivations lie), I absolutely loved the certain quirks they had between them, such as Layton and his action with stroking Lola’s wrist, or certain looks or phrases shared between them. It is things like this that make the connection between the two of them feel very real, lending more credibility to the bond between the two of them.

The reason I pointed out that I had purchased the final version is because I was kind of surprised by the amount of errors within the book, most notably the change in the name of one of the major antagonist families. In the prologue, the family name is Defontelle, in the next it is Dellefonte. I don’t think I’m dyslexic, so I’m surprised that that error made it into the final cut.

Sins & Secrets is certainly a great start to a very intriguing series. It is fast paced and full of mystery and intrigue. I loved the history and passion between Lola and Layton and I am definitely looking forward to finding out what other secrets are out there between the families, and how they have affected their lives. The book is definitely riveting and will keep you on the edge of your seat. Thankfully there is not a major cliffhanger at the end that leaves everything up in the air; the book feels complete, yet leaves enough questions and speculation for follow up volumes. Sins & Secrets is a solid four star read. I am definitely looking forward to more of this series!

I read Seduction & Temptation and Sins & Secrets back to back and I was so glad I didn't skip Seduction & Temptation because you really miss a lot of important parts of the story.

Lola and Layton are childhood friends. They are very close and their friendship seems quite normal except that Lola's father is some huge drug lord and her mother mysteriously dies one day. After that everything in Lola's life changes. Still friends with Layton but now he's done to work for the enemy and she's so confused as to why.

Years later she's kidnapped by a rival of her father's and made to do something she definitely doesn't want to do. Layton is told to make sure she follows through. Lots of drama occurs and quick decisions are made however, in the end Lola's life as she knew it has been changed forever.
By this point I'm so involved in this story I dive right into Sins & Secrets and I wasn't disappointed.

Sins & Secrets picks up two years later. Lola's been on the run from some really bad people. Her only connection to her past life is one aunt but soon she cuts ties because by talking to her Lola is putting her in danger. Now completely on her own and is living a double life. Her nighttime persona gets her mixed up in some trouble and soon she finds out the cover she thought she had is gone.

She begins to get these strange messages and because of that becomes extremely paranoid. She knows she should leave but not knowing who is leaving her notes and following her is driving her crazy. Things pick up at this point and she learns a lot about her past and there are a ton of secrets that are revealed and more that she still needs to learn.

Since it's mentioned in the blurb, I'm not giving anything away to tell you Layton shows back up but is he friend or foe? Either way let me say the chemistry is HAWT. Lola's head is spinning with the information that is thrown at her (and boy are there some surprises). She's completely confused and scared. She doesn't know who to believe and trust, plus the information she learned is quite shocking. But there's really no time for contemplation when there are some crazy scary people after her.

Between the two books there are lots of twists and turns. I was addicted to these books and can't wait for the next to come out. I need to know if Lola will be safe and how her relationship with Layton will work itself out.

Jessica sets things up nicely for book 3, Lies & Betrayal. I know I need to read it now!

This is the first book I've read by this author. I will say that I like her writing style.

This book is about Lola and Layton. They both grew up in mob families, but had a falling out causing them to drift apart. When Lola's father is facing some difficult times Layton and Lola are forced to come face to face again. Their lives turn crazy and multiple events take place that test their relationship.

I liked the topic that was covered. It is hard because this topic has been done before, but others have failed at being cliché and cheesy. I thought this book was better than that. The characters were likable. I liked the situations they each faced and how it shaped who they would become.

One HUGE problem I have with this book is the errors. I am okay with a few spelling errors, but this was way worse. There were actual flaws within the story. For example, in one scene she was wearing a skirt then a paragraph later she is wearing shorts. That is only one of many that took place throughout the book. Those type of errors really throw me for a loop, I stop reading to go back and see if my mind is playing tricks on me.

Other than those flaws the story was pretty good. I will definitely be checking out the rest of the books in this series as well as more books by this author.

3.5 stars. A very different Jessica Sorensen book for me. I felt oddly disconnected from the characters and the story. I got my wish (see my review of Seduction & Temptation), but it just didn't hit me emotionally. These books are about grown children of Mafia families, two whom we know want to leave "the family" behind and two who were trained from a young age to do all the dirty work of their fathers and are trapped. But, I just couldn't connect with any of them, at least in these short books. I will give the next book a try to see if I connect to it more.

Love, love, love Jessica Sorensen but I was disappointed with this book.

It was an awesome story line but not very well written.. The reader is given almost too much detailed information about the mobster families that seemed unnecessary to the storyline. This made parts of the story boring. Lola did also seem kind of stupid.

Lola Anders is on the run but it isn’t from the law, no, it’s from the mafia. Three mafia families want her dead and if they found her that is exactly what she will be.
Sins and Secrets was an adventure I couldn’t put down.

I feel like I have been waiting for this one for so long, and it was definitely worth the wait. There was a little surprise once I started reading, it contained the novella, Seduction & Temptation and it was great introduction to Lola and Layton.

Both Lola and Layton grew in a life that they didn’t ask for. Now grown, one has become part of the world, the other didn’t seem to be sheltered from it, but soon finds herself in the one world she doesn’t want to be a part of. When things don’t go according to plan, Lola’s life becomes a great big mess, and with people now after her, she runs. Even though she has stayed hidden for a while, the past doesn’t stay where it should, and it Layton can find her, that means others can too.

Lola was a strong and resourceful girl for sure. To stay under the radar for so long, I guess you would have to be. I wasn’t sure about her at first, just because of how “sheltered” she was from what her father was into. I can understand not know everything, but to know nothing. But I digress. As the story went on, I saw her strength and learning what all she had been through, I felt for her. She has blocked of emotion. Enter Layton, this is the one person who can actually make her feel. I liked him from the start, and it was clear that these two had a connection, not just now but since they were kids. Layton might be this big bad mafia man, but he was loyal to Lola and their interactions both emotionally and sexual was freakin awesome. There were a few others characters that I would like to learn a little more about and maybe will as the story goes on.

I read this in a about two hours or so, it was engrossing, I didn’t want to put it down. The plot was full of suspense and what would a mafia story be without violence, there’s no shortage of it. Lola has discovered so many things about her family, and the many secrets they have kept from her, some of which were revealed and others that kept me trying to figure right along with her. I liked the shocking addition to the cast of characters at the end, and I wonder where that lead and what it means for Lola and I can’t wait to see what happens next.

Sins & Secrets is a fantastic ride, with lots of steaminess, suspense and betrayals, how could it not be?!

3.5 Secret STARS!

*You can find this review on http://lovewordsandbooks.com/2014/07/...

Where to start? As always I will jump on a Jessica Sorensen book, most times I know what to expect going into one of her stories. Most times than not they follow a certain pattern. Broken characters, intrigue, darkness, chaos, and the inevitable cliffhanger. Sins & Secrets follow that criteria.

There are a few things I didn’t expect (Again forgoing the synopsis) so I was pretty much surprised by Lolita’s career choice, however given the background which we pretty much get from the start is somewhat a given, if we view it that way. (Cryptic much?) Yet I still had a hard time entertaining the idea of her being an escort, yet I guess it was all plot wise and just part of Lola.

Moving on from that, I was very much intrigued from the mere beginning. There is a death and so many questions piling on starting from that moment. Lolita (Lola) is the daughter of a very well-known mobster. Mafia is something she knows well, or that is what she thinks. Little by little questions start arising ever since the day her mother mysteriously died. As Lola finds herself on the run trying to keep safe as trying to forget her past even though it is hard and eventually people from her past are closer to her then what she thought.

There are twists and turns and a few unseen surprises along the way, which intrigued me even further and opened up my curiosity even more.

There are a few characters I’m really curious about and I can’t wait to find out more about them and their quest!

Layton was my favourite character from the story. Not only is he a genuine guy with a heart but a semi-darken soul, he has his motives for what he’s done. He like Lola is from the mafia family. Layton and Lola have a long history of friendship as well-being from rival families makes for an interesting take on their relationship.

Although Lola wasn’t my favourite heroine nor character of this story, Jessica Sorensen still did a great job in making me intrigued in secondary characters and the plot and mystery ahead. I will definitely read the sequel as the ending of the book left us with a very much enticing and anticipating continuation to Sins & Secrets.

FIFIDAH'S REVIEW -

Sins & Secrets is the first in a new series by Jessica Sorensen. It follows Lola Anders who is the daughter of a powerful drug lord. Lola has been on the run for more than a year, trying to escape the dark life that she's accustomed to. This book follows her as she struggles to hide from her past.

First and foremost, Jessica Sorensen is a brilliant author. I have read quite a number of books by her. Most of her books are dark and emotional but each of them have a certain quality that makes them stand out from each other. Needless to say, I loved the writing as it pulled me in from the start to finish. The pacing was just right. It wasn't too fast or slow. There's also mystery and suspense woven into the story. In addition, the storyline was really well done. From the beginning to the climax to the ending, I throughly enjoyed it.

Although, I think reading the prequel made me enjoy the book so much more. It's not a must read but I think it'll be a better experience because you'll get an insight to what happened in the past as well as getting to know the characters better.

Secondly, the characters are really interesting and unique. Lola Anders had a lot of difficulties coping with her past and throughout the book, we get to see her deal with it. Despite that, she's actually a very strong girl and I respect her strength. As for the love interest, Layton is actually very caring and protective towards Lola even though he tries to appear cold and indifferent. But his actions throughout the book shows how important she is to him. I also liked how the two would argue but there was no unnecessary drama. As for side characters, my favourites are Solana and Nyjah.

Lastly, I can't help but feel satisfied with the end. The last chapter follows a different perspective and it was refreshing.

All in all, I loved this book. It's no surprise that Jessica Sorensen manages to write another novel that I absolutely adored. I recommend the book to anyone who has enjoyed Jessica's other works. Or if you're looking for a short yet great new adult novel.

Let me begin by noting that I am generally a fan of Jessica Sorensen's books. And that I am open to an author sort of moving between genres; sometimes we get some real winners when this happens. With all of this being said, though, I have to say that I did not find 'Sins and Secrets,' along with it's prequel 'Seduction and Temptation,'to be one of my favorite reads. While the concept of this book is a fresh one, there were several things that kept me from giving more stars. I will say that 'Seduction and Temptation' offered a good set-up to the story in 'Sins and Secrets,' and that it's always good to have back story to draw on.

I had a difficult time connecting with any of the characters here; they were fairly one-dimensional, and not particularly well-crafted, in my opinion. Even though Lola's personality was defined by her upbringing, you know, nurture versus nature, there was not really one thing that made her sympathetic for me. And Layton, although he is definitely a romantic 'hero,' and obviously did what he did out of love for Lola, never really inspired any real feelings. The one stand-out, who I hope will be more present in future installments of the 'Sins' series, is Solana. She is an interesting one, and I would love to see more of her background and evolution, because I think that she could quite possibly be the most uniquely developed character in this storyline. Since character development is a HUGE thing for me when reading, I hold out hope that Jessica will continue to flesh out everyone in the series.

I am interested to see where Jessica takes the plot with the rest of the series, and hope that we will see a more lushly developed and tightly written story in 'Lies and Betrayal.'

I just really like this series so far! It is gritty and sad, a little dirty, very dangerous, plus it has the kind of forbidden love connection that keeps things exciting! Lola is on the run after leaving her mobster family behind. She settles in a new town, storing away money from a few jobs, one on the up-and-up, the other as an escort & that fits Lola's needs since she just wants to numb herself to life. She hears that Layton has died & is quite sentimental for her childhood friend, the one who admitted he loves her & wants to protect her. But they are on opposing sides of the mob & now he's gone & Lola is secretly thrilled that she let Layton kiss her two years ago, the final time they were together. Poor Lola, she can run but she can't hide. All the mobsters are after her now & she must run again. Layton finds her & he is full of information about their past & it is clear he is on her side & will do anything to protect her. Lola drops her guard after being apart from Layton so long, thinking he was dead, and she allows him to get physical with her in every way without her normal rules - these two are so hot together! There are lots of dangerous surprises, both good and bad, and I ended up really feeling bad for Lola since she is a target for really no reason & it must hurt to be betrayed by her own family. But one of the surprises involves her family & adds a wonderful little wrinkle of mystery to the story. I'm dying (no pun intended) to find out more about Lola's new additional to her family tree! The new elements of intrigue to the story made me bump it up to 5 full stars for my review.

Really I am not even sure how Jessica still has it in her. A new series with amazing characters, a ridiculously intriguing story line and some seriously emotional scenes.

Yes, we all know by now I am a Jessica Sorensen groupie. I have said it time and time again, the minute Jessica acknowledges me in the blogger world, all the late nights reading and anxiety of reviews will have been worth it.

The new "Sins" series is something completely different! Lies, betrayal, danger and tragedy abound is this 200 page gem. Lola Anders aka Lolita is living a life of danger and on the run. For growing up in the mob lifestyle, she seems very naïve and innocent. Her best friend (and the man of my (her) dreams), Layton Everett, is one of a kind. Though he too is living a life surrounded by the mob, there is a genuineness about him that he never looses.

"Sins and Secrets" tell the story of Lola's need to escape and what happens when her past comes back to haunt her in the form of Layton who carries a heap of secrets with him. While full of suspense, "Sins and Secrets" isn't lacking in the steam either. Lola/Layton are everything we have come to expect from Jessica in a book couple.

There is a prequel to the story that is included when you purchase this one. It is a definite must read to really lay the foundation of the entire story. If you are a fan of Jessica's, "Sins and Secrets" is a sure bet. The ending will having you dying for more like only Jessica knows how to make you do.

I'm not sure how I feel about this book, so I'm giving it 3 stars. I love mob stories and expect killings, blood & guts, and sexy times. There's always a "good guy" in the mob. I loved Layton, but I couldn't relate to Lola. With her family being big mobsters, everything about her was a contradiction. No real passion for anything, unable to protect herself, not very street savvy considering the amt of "training" she says she got because of her dad's status. I get not trusting anyone and even being a cynic, but she tended to be emotionally detached and flip-flopped between emotions. I expected her character to develop and for her to have feelings, but it never really did. Her ending up a hooker really threw me for a loop. While many things were explained, it felt they were revealed in such a short and simple fashion, that the draw for the story - that addicted, I-can't-put-this-book-down, dinner-will-have-to-wait-excitement - fell flat.

The major drawback for me were the errors! Spelling, words left out, grammar, you name it. I got this book because I have always heard kick a$$ things about her stories. But I was really sad to see so many errors for such a popular author. Some of the errors were so bad I couldn't figure out what was going on. That's frustrating! This is the first book of hers I've read, so I'm really hoping this is not the norm.

I will continue with the series because Ms. Sorensen created enough of a spark in me through this story that I have to find out what happens.

Lola has been living her life on the run since she committed murder. She’s changed her appearance and identity in order to out run the demons chasing behind her. She’s holed up in a town working at the local car dealership by day and turning tricks at night with an escort service. It’s when she learns of Layton’s murder but she spirals into black nothingness. But as it is in the mafia world, everything thing is not what it seems. When an escort client date turns deadly, a ghost from her past comes to her rescue. Lola’s life is riddled with secrets and sins. Her family isn’t exactly what she thinks it once was and when a mafia secret is spilled, Lola must again go on the run. Can she escape her past or will it eventually kill her?

As if this series could get any better... IT DID. Sins and Secrets builds upon the world building foundation laid down by Sorensen in Sins and Temptations. Lola’s family life continues to disintegrate after every page. Just when you think you’ve figured out the sins of her family’s past, surprising twists and turns keep you on your toes. This book will leave you in shock and awe. You’ll want the next book in the series in your hand immediately because the Sins series is just getting started and it’s going to be a bumpy ride.
