February 1941. Can love survive in a time of war? Julie Harris is working in London’s East End as a midwife when a bombing raid destroys her family and the house she grew up in. All she has left is her motherless baby nephew William. Determined to uphold her promise to her sister to keep William safe until his father, Bill, returns from the war, she accepts a post as a midwife in Cliffehaven on the south-coast of England. Here they are taken under the wing of the Reilly family at the Beach View boarding house. But all too soon Julie learns that Bill is ‘missing in action’ and William falls dangerously ill. As she begins the long vigil by William’s beside, she fears she will lose the little boy she has grown to love as her own…
A fabulous, heart-warming Second World War novel in Ellie Dean's bestselling Cliffehaven series (previously called the Beach View Boarding House series).
This heartwarming series about a boarding house in Cliffhaven, draws me in. A wonderful mix of storylines. If you were to compare a book to a candy, I slowly sucked this book in. This was the first book where I browsed slowly through the chapters, trying to enjoy it for as long as possible. As opposed to what I normally do, chewing hard so that the tastiest flavor explodes all at once. I hope you now have a craving for this book, because it's worth it!
As with every book in this season, an easy read over a few days - this one concentrates on a Cockney district nurse who decides to make a fresh start in Cliffehaven with her estranged sister after an air raid destroys her house and kills her parents. So we do not meet the Beach View crew until a few chapters into the book. Another enjoyable read, although it does show the daily horror of the air raids as well. With coming from Sheffield, I was mildly amused by the author's attempts at writing in a Yorkshire dialect when it came to Bill's family!
never heard of this author before but so wish I had. fantastically written great characters and a wonderful story. will definitely be reading more. best book so far in 2018
Couldn't wait to finish this book. I have never been so emotional so many times while reading. This is exactly the type of book I have been looking for all my life. The way Ellie Dean describes the pain of war is so beautiful and painful at the same time. I cried so many times when there was an attack on London or Cliffehaven. My grandparents met during an alarm, so it is the only reason why I exist. And my forever cat died from being crushed, so no surprise that I was bawling my eyes out. This book has a powerful meaning for me and it will forever be in my top 20. I also have rarely seen a book with so many ratings get such a high score, except Harry Potter and the Philosopher Stone. I am curious about the other books in this series. I read it in Dutch and I am glad they all got translated.
The only things I didn't like about this book were the parts about Ron, Rosie and Eileen. I couldn't make any sense of it for some reason and skilled it all. Luckily it wasn't that many pages.
I just really like this series. I liked this one a lot because of the progression of some of the relationships between main characters, and because of the topic. Babies. I love babies. I'm a mom, and a wife, and so I love the happy endings despite the heartaches we/they (see, I'm becoming ONE with the characters) go through. I liked how this one ended too, but I won't spoil a thing for you! I just liked how it leads on and you really feel like, "Okay, next book, the NEXT chapter." The world is going to broaden, I can just feel it, but yet...we'll still have the main characters in there too! I have also enjoyed how this author fills in some details as she goes, when you read the next book. You were fine with the book you read, but when you read the NEXT book, you find out more side story, and maybe more details, et cetera.
I loved this book. Ellie Dean took me right into the settings with her wonderful descriptions and the variety of characters she developed throughout. I particularly loved every time Julie and Peggy interacted. Such kind people. The type you'd want as friends.I really imaged I was right there watching and being a part of the story. It really connected with me personally in the most satisfying way. I like happy endings, so I wish Julie could have had a better fate. If anyone deserved it, she did. (Also, we never found out what happened between Ellen Harris and Rose Brairhwaite)

This storyline follows Julie Harris, a midwife from London. After a tragedy with her family, she heads to Cliffehaven to seek out her estranged older sister.
The storyline focuses on babies being born during the war sometimes amid the bombings. I'm always amazed how resilient people were when everything was literally falling around them, they just got on with it. Both my parents were born during the war.
This is the fourth book, and every single one has been so different. I'm really enjoying them, and I can't wait to read the next in the series.
Really enjoying Ellie Dean's Beach View Boarding House/Cliffehaven series. This is the fourth one I have read now so really getting to know the main characters who have featured in all the books so far and also those who for whatever reason are just passing through. Looking forward to reading more in the series to see who else finds refuge with Peggy and her family.
The fourth book in the series. This was very much what I expected. Enjoyable reading. Lovely characters and an interesting story line. I think there are two more in the series and I intend to read them all.
Continuing the series of Cliffhaven All I can say is it gets better with each book and all the different visitors/ family they become friends While boarding with Peggy and her family During the war Great read great author
I love this series. Centred around Beach View House and the Reilly family - the stories are so lovely. After finishing one, I can’t wait to read the next!
