A Wizard's Touch #2

Kevin's Alpha

Rate this book
When the heart is involved, bravery can have more power than the strongest magic.

When James Sparks, the alpha of the local werewolf pack, declares Kevin Santhill as his mate, the free-wheeling wizard panics. He didn't plan on settling down—not now, not ever. It doesn’t matter that James is the sexiest thing he’d ever seen or that his heart flips whenever he sees the sexy wolf shifter, he plans to stick by his guns and stay independent.

However, when his best friend Jaynell goes missing, he has to partner with James to help find his friend. And if Kevin can't find the confidence to dredge up his magic and control his avatar, Jay could be lost forever.

Amber Kell has made a career out of daydreaming. It has been a lifelong habit she practices diligently as shown by her complete lack of focus on anything not related to her fantasy world building.

When she told her husband what she wanted to do with her life he told her to go have fun.

During those seconds she isn't writing she remembers she has children who humor her with games of 'what if' and let her drag them to foreign lands to gather inspiration. Her youngest confided in her that he wants to write because he longs for a website and an author name—two things apparently necessary to be a proper writer.

Despite her husband's insistence she doesn't drink enough to be a true literary genius she continues to spin stories of people falling happily in love and staying that way.

She is thwarted during the day by a traffic jam of cats on the stairway and a puppy who insists on walks, but she bravely perseveres..

She also writes under the name Mikela Q. Chase

I didn’t enjoy this as much as the first book.

We got another wizard/werewolf pairing, this time between insecure wizard Kevin and the pack’s Alpha James.
The story picks up right where the first book left off, so this cannot be read as a stand-alone.

This story was just too action packed. The romance was almost non-existent and I enjoyed it less because of that. Even though I really did like Kevin and James. I just wanted them to spend a more time making goo goo eyes at each other, instead of running around saving the day.

But we did get the cutest little baby gargoyle.

I have been looking forward to this second instalment in the Wizard’s Touch series since the MC were introduced in the previous book. However, there were a few things that didn’t allow me to enjoy it very much or give it a 3 star read.

My first objection was that I found it hard to believe that at one point, sweet, shy, insecure Kevin suddenly pulled out a bottle of lube and let it know he was topping. Considering it was an alpha wolf he was taking to and it was only their second time having sex it made absolutely no sense. Especially since it turned out to be his first time topping, which meant it wasn’t a common occurrence and therefore something he expected in a relationship.

It was also rather unbelievable how quickly Kevin went from thinking of running like mad from his potential mate to being practically more possessive than James.

I found myself rolling my eyes at the mystery a lot too. It begins when Lisa, a friend of Kevin's is murdered and it seemed like we were being forced to like her because she was Kevin’s friend and had dated Dean for all of a day. She kept getting described as a sweet, wonderful girl, full of life (...) and since we had met her only once it seemed pretty inconceivable to feel a great deal about her death, so rather than feel sorry she got killed I was rather indifferent to the matter. The person responsible acted like a petulant child when the mystery was solved rather than the powerful persona he was meant to be and I found it was rather weak characterization on the author's part.

I also couldn’t reconcile James being a mated wolf and allowing Thomas to treat Kevin the way he did because he was so torn up about Jay’s disappearance, from choking him to throwing him to the floor to being pretty rude to him.

Since I felt no connection to the characters and I was pretty apathetic towards the resolution of the mystery, I can’t rate this with more than 2 stars.

**Grammar**

In this second book, we started understanding something more about the story and the mystery behind it. The MCs of this book were Thomas' big brother and alpha,James, and Jay's friend, Kevin.
I liked them together, how could a big, growling and jealous wolf not be hot?
With Kevin trying being a top for the first time and James giving up a bit of his control and experiencing the pleasure of being a bottom, well guys.....the sex scenes were good.

Sadly this book was not only about love and pleasure, but there was also some angst and I really was sorry for Dean losing his girlfriend. When they found the girl's body...damn...
The thing that I dind't like about this book was the fact that the author didn't give the right importance to the killing. A poor young woman was murdered and her boyfriend with his friends found her body, and yes they are sad in the first minutes after the finding, but then it seems as if they forget about it and her boyfriend is left alone with his pain.....They could have been better friends to that guy...

Said this, I wanna add that Thomas was more alpha than James, and that for all his talk about his fear of commitment, Kevin really gave up his freedom way too fast. I'm not complaying about the fact that there wasn't anyone else, bcs I hate cheating, but they needed to talk more before mating.

Very good follow-up to the first book. Kevin brought out more protective instincts because of his lack of self-confidence, and I didn't like James as much as I had Thomas. But, I still liked this book, and I'm interested in seeing where it goes.

There's certainly a lot of corruption hovering around this school of magic. In some ways it made me think of Hogwarts. *grins*

I think this will be a comfort series. Easy to read. Not much angst. Sexy times but not overrun with sex. There's a good action plot. Wish these were longer. :-)

Enjoyable

Good addition to the series. I like that it continues on from the last book and we get to see what happened with the gnomes.
I liked seeing Kevin get his confidence with both James and his friends helping him.

Book two of 'A Wizard's Touch' was just as much fun to read as the first volume, and added some wonderful detail to the world and the characters encountered in the initial installment. While the focus in this story is on Kevin and his mate James, Jaynell and Thomas from book one are back, as are the triplets and, of course, the gnomes. This book is action-packed, full of magic and possessive werewolves, and has an interesting villain.

Kevin is the son of an elf and a wizard and, as such, has some very special magic of his own. None of which was ever recognized by his father, so Kevin ends up not believing in himself. He also doesn’t want to mate with James, since his idea of commitment is the stronger partner holding the weaker one prisoner (something he learned watching his parents). His lack of self-confidence makes his mate growl and the other wizards wonder, since they don’t see him as weak at all. Luckily, Kevin has ample opportunity to prove to himself how strong he really is as he turns into the leader of the search for Jay. Oh, and when he finally manages to call his avatar? Too cute!

James may be the alpha, but on many occasions he doesn’t feel very much in control. He may have gotten used to his strong brother, Thomas, being rather more independent than a normal pack member, but he can live with that. His mate not being ready to fall into his arms is more of a problem. Intellectually he can understand, but his wolf has a different point of view. I liked that he was in control of his shifter urges and gave Kevin the time he needed to figure things out. In the end, it made them a much stronger couple.

With love soon popping out of the woodwork, a totally unexpected villain, fast-paced action once the guys pool their resources (and that includes the gnomes), and some more wonderful "magical" details, this is another fun story that had me entertained from beginning to end. If you like stories about wizards who are less than self-confident but grow before your eyes, if you enjoy reading about men who need to figure out how not to smother their mates in possessive jealousy, and if you're looking for a light, entertaining read, then you will probably like this novella.

After a life under his father’s thumb, Kevin has no intentions of putting himself under anyone’s authority ever again. He is going to go to school, learn how to heal using his magic, and ignore every one of his father’s attempts to make him some type of fancy, power-hungry politician. All that is going great till one of his friends pulls him into the path of Alpha James Sparks. A man who is commanding, and hot, and annoyingly insistent that Kevin is his mate. And once Kevin figures out how to stop falling in bed with the man, he is going to totally set him straight on how not-mated they are going to be. Because he really has no desire–-nope, none at all–-to be bound to the tricky, undeniably sexy, Alpha wolf.

Then a friend goes missing, and it turns out that someone has been using the local magic population at their own little bundle of energizer batteries. With several people already dead, and another missing, no one is sure who is doing the abducting, but everyone is pointing fingers. Kevin is not an all-powerful, super-special wizard like his friend Jaynell, but he is going to do everything in his power to help stop the killings. He just has to figure out how to control his avatar, who is going after the local wizarding population, and why he can’t seem to leave the security and love offered by one highly annoying wolf.

Kevin’s Alpha is the second book in the Wizard’s Touch series, and while it may be possible to read it as a stand-alone, I really would recommend picking up the first book in the series before you do. A lot of the stuff that Jaynell went through in book one, is going to have repercussions in book two, so it will make more sense, and probably be more enjoyable is you go back and read Jaynell's Wolf before starting this one.

There are some points in this book that I really enjoyed more than in book one. Mainly the fact that Kevin isn’t a super-powerful wizard like Jaynell. While I like the idea of all that power, I find I enjoy stories more with characters that are just ordinary–-who then have to fight and stretch themselves to do what seems impossible. With Jaynell you never really feared anyone was going to be able to take him out, he was just too powerful, but Kevin doesn’t have all that power at his disposal. He’s not going to be able to pull a rabbit out of his hat (although, I guess he might be able to actually do that, though not sure it would do him any good unless it was to feed Gideon) so he is going to have to rely on his friends, his mate, and his tenuous grasp on his avatar.

I also liked how James was willing to let Kevin make up his mind about whether or not he wanted to be his mate. Not that James wasn’t totally sure he could bring Kevin around to agreeing. But he seemed to know that commanding him to be his mate would only lead to Kevin taking the first magical carpet out of Dodge. Even not knowing all that much about his past, James was smart enough to know just what buttons to avoid. And for all his Alpha-ness outside the bedroom, he also knows how to bend to his mate’s desires, which was nice for a change. Not saying he wasn’t totally Topping from the Bottom, but he also knew how to let go of control, sometimes, and actually enjoy it.

I did have some major issues with the whole kidnapping plot, though. The evil guy was just too damn obvious, and when the final confrontation happened he was throwing clichés around left and right. He even cackled maniacally. That is not scary, at all. It is just a bit annoying and a tad hilarious (and not in a good way). If the whole point was to make us fear for everyone’s lives, and thereby raise the tension to its peak…yeah, not so much. Plus it really felt like he took a 180 degree personality turn from book one. I don’t remember him acting like this, even a little, and it seemed really out of left field.

I liked the romance, and the bit of mystery, but some parts of this book just didn’t gel with me. Some of the twists seemed a tad bit contrived, and it made the overall plot seem a little thin. There were some things I really liked though, and I did enjoy reading about Kevin and James. Wouldn’t mind learning more about the triplets either. This story was short and mostly entertaining, so I don’t regret reading it, but I do wish it didn’t seem so fake in some aspects. Will probably end up reading any future books, though, because I did like these last two stories.

These books are short reads but I'm finding they don't lack in interesting characters or plot.
This contains shifter-half elf-gargoyle and other fantastical elements, so readers who like this sort of thing should have some fun.
Please don't read these books thinking you're going to find Trollope or Hemingway in the pages, these are for entertainment, light fantasy and romance enjoyment.

The good:
It's better written than the first one, although the climax is not at all.
I love the world she's built. It's a lot like the Reclamation series which is one of my favorites, but the meat of it just isn't there. I think Kell has a lot of talent but she churns so many out so fast that the quality slips.

The bad:
In justifying why he's keeping his mate safe, one character says, "Because if anything happened to , my life wouldn't be worth anything." That's kind of a selfish way of looking at it.
Climax at the end is very weak. (major spoiler)
Villain does some major info dumping at the end ala comic books complete with "mad laughter."

The ugly:
The flecks of gold in a character's eyes change depending on mood. This does NOT happen.
POV changes mid-scene.

I think Amber Kells showed some imagination when she created this interesting series and I can't wait to read her other books. Unlike the first book it took me longer to get hook into it, but again I am not really into same sex actions but I like the story line. I had a hard time not picturing Crag the Avatar as puppy and I really wish dragons like Gideon were really cause I would have to get me one as it would have to be way better protect the a dog. If I had any thing to complain about it would thing I complain about the most when I get into a really good book or tv show "IT'S NOT LONG ENOUGH". ;)

Compared to book one there was a bit more excitement, however, there seemed to be some differences in how mates were addressed between the books. Also, unless you've read the first book you'd be pretty lost. There is a lot that does not get explained well if you were just jumping into the series.

I enjoyed this book in the series just as much as I enjoyed the previous one. Half elf and human wizard, Kevin, finds his mate, James, the alpha werewolf, and they go through a few disastrous issues together before they even mate. I really like it so much better when main characters mate in the beginning of the book instead of the end. I loved Kevin's avatar, little Crag (the gargoyle), as much as I was fascinated with Gideon, Jay's (his roommate) avatar, the three headed dragon who can spit fire and acid. Such fun! :D Some reviewers stated that the story was predictable, but to me, it was not. Besides, it doesn't matter if I know who the villain is or not, it just has to be done well, and in this case, I wasn't sure who the villain was at all. I like the author's style of writing and the characters are so enchanting.

A quick, fun and easy read with interesting world building. The romance is cute, pretty insta and obviously mating which was enjoyable.

I adore the fantasy aspect with the magic, university and variety of species. Especially love the avatars Crag the gargoyle is adorable and Gideon the dragon is amazing! I really liked Lisa too, along with the triplets who are always entertaining.

Despite being short does well in developing characters and getting to know more about them, although would like to explore the werekins history a little more.

Still the series books all seem to link, with characters reappearing throughout as get their own stories so look forward to reading the rest.

Of course theres a happy ending for James & Kevin 💕

Kevin's Alpha
By Amber Kell

This was the 2nd book in the A Wizard's Touch series. I really enjoyed it and liked the main characters, but a little less than the first one. For some reason I felt a tad less connected to Kevin and James and it felt like a little less happened in the book compared to the first one too. It's definitely worth a reread as is the series so far for me.

The book is in both Kevin and Thomas's POV.

Felt like giving this series a 2nd chance, not too impressed. Can't really feel any chemistry going on, romance in this book just doesn't speak to me. Plot is overly over the top. Just Meh...
Might read more due to the masochist inside me, can't promise myself anything though.

I like the fun of this series. Though there were a few sad times, it is generally angst free. Wizards, werewolves, dragons, and gargoyles all add to the magic.

This series was given to me by the publisher for an honest review.

Kevin’s Alpha: Kevin is a wizard and James Sparks is the Alpha of the local werewolf pack. There is instant chemistry, but Kevin is afraid of commitment. Danger enters by the kidnapping of his friend Jay, and Kevin and cast go to help battle the enemy.

Kevin and James: Kevin has always felt second best because of his family. His powers never seemed that strong compared to them and he never wants to compromise like his mother did. James has always been the powerful Alpha, can he convince Kevin to risk his freedom for love?

Summary:

The first two books, Jaynell’s Wolf and Kevin’s Alpha are almost like one book, following the danger around Jay. The strength of the series is the world building that we get throughout each of the novels. Because they build on each other, we get strong secondary characters that eventually become main characters in the next book. My only negative point on this series is that there is not much depth in the characters, so don’t expect any profound inner thoughts of our characters. While they do build on each other, you can get the gist of the other books without spoiling the endings. Although, I would recommend reading them in order.

I recommend this series if you want a fast read that you can read on a Sunday afternoon. I plan on keeping an eye out for the next installment and see what other adventures in the Wizard Academy.

This volume, too, is not exactly gushing with warm fuzzies. Then again I don’t believe that was the intention. It’s a stylistic thing. And still makes for a fun story.

Maybe the coolest thing about these books is that sense of youthful adventure. It's light and serious at the same time, and people spontaneously band together to catch the bad guys. Even better, they don’t go into overt badass mode but remain down-to-earth about it.

The only thing that briefly irritated me is that mismatch in timeline with the events of the previous book. Unless you suppose some temporal padding that is never indicated in the text.

As such not only has Kevin not had time to get to know Jay that well and to have done together all he re-members, but Kevin actually went off with the alpha the night before the duel and if he is still in bed with him then he pretty much can't know how it ended. Or at the very least can’t have seen Jay since. And it’s fairly unbelievable he would have just stayed in bed the day of his friend’s life-and-death duel.
So maybe James took several days to talk Kevin into sex. It’s not impossible, but, as I mentioned, every implication points towards a direct continuation instead.

This is book 2 in the Wizard's Touch series staring Jaynell's roommate Kevin and pack alpha James. Although they've been to bed, Kevin is freaked out by commitment due in part to the fact his father was an elf and they don't do monogamy and he feels he's not much of a wizard, therefore not a good mate for an alpha. So while Kevin is waffling over whether he wants to mate and the significance of that, James spends his time trying not to freak Kevin out by being too possessive. However when a female friend who started dating one of the triplets is killed and her magic sucked out, things go haywire, in combination with a supposed investigation into Jaynell killing the Senate member who tried to kill him. When Jaynell is kidnapped by mysterious wizards, they have to find him, even if it means confronting the wizard Senate and dealing with a nasty cult on campus. This was an okay story, but Kevin was kind of wishy washy and I wasn't enamoured with the cult story-line and why they were doing it, but I liked his avatar Crag, a gargoyle. I'm wondering what's going to happen with the triplets, 3 stories or less? *wiggles eyebrows*

Hilarious

I wanted to rip the headmaster's arrogant, power-hungry head off. The council needs to get off their butts and fix that or Jay is going to end up doing it for them. I love that the gnomes revolted and that's what brings down the council members. Poor Lisa and Dean. Edward was a pain in the neck and I'm glad he got the crap scared out of him by Thomas after he kept spouting off at the mouth about Jay. Kevin's dad needs a swift kick somewhere uncomfortable too. While Kevin might not be the strongest wizard out there, his abilities match perfectly with James's needs as an alpha mate. His loyalty, compassion and healing nature is a perfect balance for his alpha's aggression and protectiveness. I love James view of his mates abilities: "Healers...didn't have killer avatars that might eat him at any moment". Hilarious. I also think Jay's inventions are the best, I would love to have some of those. *snickers*

Would you recommend this book? Absolutely. I love Amber Kell's books. She is one of my favorite authors, especially her shifter books. I would suggest first reading Jaynell's Wolf to understand some of the situations in Kevin's Alpha.
