She can feel what’s in the hearts of both the living and the dead… But can she keep her own from breaking?
Seventeen-year-old Kali is hopelessly, madly in love with a guy who can’t remember ever meeting her. But Kali has never been one to give up easily -- or to break her word -- and she promised Zane that she would stop hiding her “gifts” from the people closest to her. When her heartfelt confession of seeing shadows of the past sends her friend Tara into a stony silence and her fighter-pilot dad into a tailspin, Kali wonders if she’s done the right thing. Thank goodness her friend Kylee seems to understand, because being in love is having more of an effect on Kali than just making her miserable. It’s making her “abilities” grow stronger than ever.
When at last she and Zane meet again on the beaches of Oahu’s North Shore, Kali is determined that, this time, everything will turn out right. But when a foreboding specter appears in the midst of Kali’s own family -- a presence that only Zane can see -- the two find themselves in a situation that is anything but normal. And if the effect that Zane’s touch has on Kali is any indication, the two may be flirting with a connection far more intense than either of them bargained for…

3.5 stars. I really liked the first book in this series. I gave it 5 stars. I read it back in 2012. I think it was a stand alone book then, but then the author got enough requests to do a sequel that she did. I don't know that I really realized there were more (there are four total now). I thought I'd follow up.
Even though it's been six years since I read the first book, I really remembered most of it. It made that much of an impact on me. I had the book in my Kindle Cloud and pulled it up to do a quick skim of the end as a refresher though ... and was immediately pulled back into the story. All the emotions came right back. Ahhh ... book 1 ;)
This one DID feel a little like the author just continuing on with the story at the request of fans. It was fine, I enjoyed it. It was a quick read. So much felt a little to "easy" though. It didn't really have the charm of the first one. Which is not to say I was sorry I spent the time on it ... and I plan on continuing on with the series to see where it goes. But I also would have been fine just to let the story end where it did in book 1 and leave the rest to my imagination.
When I first started the first book of this series I almost didn't get passed the opening page but I am so glad I continued to read .I have loved the series and I an now on to the third book . Awesome I just bought the forth book and I will say the books are very well written and interesting and full of fun. I am enjoying the fact that they are in Hawaii and in many places I have visited.
I loved this book so much! After the drama from book 1, I was dying to continue with the series. Just like book 1, it had heartbreak, laughter, and heartfelt moments.
These books technically could be read as a stand-alone but it’s 10000% recommend that they are read in order!!
I loved Wraith so much, I'm so happy Empath is out. If you have not read Wraith yet, I recommend reading it before reading this. It will help you understand many things. Empath starts where Wraith ended. Zane is alive and recovering from his horrible car accident, but does not really remember anything about Kali. He has vague memories but doesn't understand much. A good part of this book is about Kali learning more about her gift and how to block out the emotions she feels. Her friend Kylee is much more open and understanding, than her friend Tara, due to something that happened to her as a child and Kylee's grandmother is familiar with the type of gift that Kali has. Kali's father doesn't want to acknowledge what happens to her either. All the characters from Wraith are here, plus you learn things about Kali's father and grandmother bringing another character into the story. Kali tries not to have high hopes that she and Zane will just be the way they were, but she gives him the time and space that he needs for his injuries to heal and to adjust from being in a coma. Kali's emotions for saying goodbye to her Cheyenne friends and her excitement about being in Hawaii and reconnecting with Zane are real. Zane's uncertainty about things is real, as well. His approach to his relationship with Kali was slow and sweet. It wasn't totally obvious that he was trying to hold back because the connection with Kali was so strong, it scared him. He also has developed a gift to see ghosts, but it appears it is only Kali's grandmother that he sees. There is an interesting twist in this book that helps Kali's family come together. Matt is still sweet, likeable and understanding. I hope there is a third book in this series. The way this book ends certainly leaves the possibility for one because we want more of Kali and Zane, we want Matt and Lacey together, and we want Tara and Kylee to visit Hawaii. There are other things we want to know more about, as well. I don't want to give too many spoilers; you'll have to read it.
Great followup to Wraith! Sequels always make me nervous, especially following such a fantastic first book. My only complaint is that it was over much too soon. ;-) Hoping for more books in the series!
This book and book 1 are so intriguing. The plot is tight with no loose ends, and the story line is unique but appealing. The CHARACTERIZATION is superb. The only drawback is no #3 yet!
