Even as the two of them grow closer as a couple, insecurities surface when incoming freshmen at the school are interested in both Yoh and Haruna… Haruna wants to be a strong girlfriend, but a series of misunderstandings puts Yoh in a difficult spot! What sort of shocking solution will he come up with?

Kazune Kawahara made her manga debut at age 18 with Kare no Ichiban Sukina Hito (His Most Favorite Person). Also, while thinking of her manga, she often spaces out and brings grocery baskets home. Adores her nieces.
I really enjoy the growth that Haruna goes on. Though she is a bit awkward in the beginning, it's hard to not root for her to find her happiness. Yoh is really a good boy in a grumpy, attractive package, and we love to see it.
The cast of characters in this series are really enjoyable as well! Some favorites being Mami and Fumi! They all feed into what the main couple needs, and it works really well.
I wish I could have tweaked a couple of things, but other than that, I genuinely enjoyed the reading experience on this one!
This one was just as great as the other ones! I also enjoyed how it had people going after haruna as well since she’s always described as plain it was nice to see her getting more attention! I love her and Yoh so much and I can’t wait to read the next ones!
The nice part about reading in omnibus format is that when one volume's a bit of a dud, the others can really bring it back around. Volume 7 is an interesting one that made me appreciate Fumi even more...but Asa simply doesn't deserve him. Her own brother says as much, and he's right.
It's fairly realistic, I suppose, for actual high school relationships, where people jump in and out of crushes and romances with a fickleness born of youth and proximity. Even Haruna was "in love" with Fumi after speaking to him approximately three times, then moved on to her more substantial crush on Yoh as their friendship developed.
But if Asa's getting bored with Fumi, she should just...tell him that she wants more attention and physical affection from him, instead of cooking up a whole mean-spirited plot to cheat on him with richer guys. (Who were not hot, incidentally...were they supposed to be? They all looked like radishes, and had the personalities to match.) Then again, since Asa only started dating Fumi as a mean way to steal his attention away from Haruna, it kind of tracks. I was liking her a bit more in the previous volume, when she was protecting her brother and Haruna from Yoh's ex, but she's still pretty shallow and selfish.
Which is maybe part of what makes Haruna so fascinating to Yoh? We never see his parents - they're "traveling" during the scene where Haruna takes care of her feverish boyfriend - but they never seem to be home all the many, many times that Yoh's friends or Haruna are over there hanging out. Which also just made me realize...does Asa not have friends? She only seemed to hang out with her brother's buddies and now with Haruna and Haruna's friends. I guess maybe she's the kind of girl who doesn't befriend other girls. It tracks.
Anyway, if that's the kind of girl Yoh's used to being around - plus the ex-girlfriend who was cute and helpless and turned half his basketball team against him because she wasn't getting the level of attention/affection she wanted...Haruna really must've been an incredible breath of fresh air. She's blunt and honest and kind and wildly unselfish. It's really not hard at all to see why he fell for her.
I like that both of them are showing a lot of growth over the course of this series and their relationship. Haruna, of course, has been developing a new level of style and confidence that goes beyond sports, without letting go of her love for athleticism. She's maturing a lot, too, as she learns more about relationships - romantic and platonic - and how to express herself and understand other people.
And Yoh turns out to have actually been really shy. He was hot and popular, but also so inexperienced in romance that his coaching of Haruna hardly made sense. He struggles a lot with trying to be a good boyfriend - in the traditional sorts of manly ways, but also in the unique things that Haruna wants and expects from him. Which is that he doesn't always have to be so "manly" or in control of plans.
Her birthday was really cute; I do hope Yoh gets to try out some of those dates he'd been researching and agonizing over. But they ended up doing Haruna's suggestion, which of course was perfect for her: a baseball game, where Yoh could watch and love her in her element.
The school sports festival is a big plotline that looks like it'll be continuing into the next omnibus, but it's a little different from the usual sports tournaments - which I'd thought the whole basketball/softball thing from an earlier volume was. This is a more elaborate event that's more...festival games than traditional athletic competitions. Plus the whole "rooter" element that reminded me of SOTUS.
I have to say...Yoh looked amazing as the school captain. Again, this was a real area of growth for him, because he HATED being nominated and literally only chose the rooter side so he could spend time with his girlfriend. (Adorable.) Being the major focus of public attention is such a nightmare for him. But he worked so hard and he did such an amazing job. If their team doesn't win I'm going to get really mad.
He's also, unfortunately, engaged in another side competition, because Asaoka has finally admitted that he likes Haruna, too. This was pretty visible in earlier volumes, but he was keeping pretty quiet about it and passing it off as a joke. He's getting closer and closer to actually telling Haruna, which...I don't love, but everyone does have a right to their own feelings. And it doesn't seem spiteful between him and Yoh at the moment.
One of the things I really like about Yoh and Haruna is how respectful they are of each other. Even when Yoh strongly suspects that his friend is romantically interested in his girlfriend, he asks that friend to walk her home when it's late at night and he's concerned about her safety. She matters more to him than some silly pride, and he can hash out other things with Asaoka later.
Similarly, none of their jealousy has ever spilled into anything like distrust. They acknowledge that they don't love their significant other getting attention from other attractive people...but it's never accompanied by a concern about cheating. In particular, I really liked that when a new student kisses Haruna, Yoh's responses are:
- Are you okay? - It wasn't your fault. - It's fine, it doesn't bother me.
That seems...pretty obvious, but it's really not for a lot of romance stories, where someone who's kissed or touched against their will might be blamed for letting it happen. Even when Haruna tries to blame herself - I was talking to him alone; I smiled at him - Yoh says yeah, you did, and I warned you to be careful around these guys, but that doesn't make it your fault.
Just really basic good guy behavior that sadly isn't all that common.
The ultimate resolution to that whole thing was incredibly silly but also weirdly in character for their relationship: Yoh grabbing and kissing the guy so now they've both encountered his lips and it won't matter anymore that kissing Haruna would be some sort of an "indirect kiss" in the back of his mind.
(Also, honestly, I'd suspected that guy was way more into Yoh than he was into Haruna, and his reaction to the two different kisses proved it.)
This is getting a lot better. It’s so freaking cute! And I really warmed up to our main characters. Haruna felt a bit childish at first but she turned out really sweet and funny (and utterly naive and oblivious). Yoh is such a heartbreaker but Haruna brings the best out of him. I really like where the story is going! Also, schools in Japan (if this is realistic) are funny. Two more volumes to go!
This is an adorably cute series. I mean, there’s nothing amazing about the premise, because this is a straight romance manga, but I think it’s adorable.
And I think it’s really has to do with the characters. Kazune Kawahara writes such great characters (see also: My Love Story!!) and they all feel realistic and natural. And they’re all just so much fun. I love Haruna figuring out how to be in a relationship and dealing with the realities of high school and how much pressure Yoh is under now. And even though there are some things that I’m not cool with—like the subplot of Asami cheating on Fumi to see if he really does love her—it’s still interesting and I’m invested in what’s going to happen next with these characters. (I do like Asami, but I think she gets thrown under the bus sometimes with her characterization. I like that she’s the bad girl with the heart of gold, but I think sometimes Kawahara focuses too much on Asami being bad instead of being messed-up.) I’m really interested in how the plot’s going to go now, with Yoh in his third year and Haruna beginning to get her own underclassmen admirers.
One of my problems with long-running romance manga (anything that goes longer than ten volumes, so really nearly all of them) is that there are points when the plot runs out of steam and everything feels like filler. And there are filler moments in High School Debut but they’re so enjoyable that I really don’t mind them at all. And what I really like is the point this volume is at is Haruna and Yoh trying to navigate their relationship, instead of just trying to come up with one plot contrivance after another. There are plot contrivances, like Haruna thinking Yoh is going to start liking the other third year sports-day captain because “Oh, well all the captains end up dating each other!” but I like it because Haruna doesn’t know how to handle that situation.
High School Debut is a super cute and fun series, and I think Kawahara’s done a great job with making a romance manga that is still interesting and fresh at ten volumes in. (It also helps that I’m reading these through the omnibus editions, so I think it doesn’t feel like as much of a slog like I had with say, Otomen.) Really enjoyable series, and I recommend it as strongly as My Love Story!!
OH MY GOSH WHY DID I STOP READING THIS?! I looove Haruna. She's awesome :3 And Yoh is awesome too. Gosh, I love how well defined their personalities are!!! This is definitely my favorite manga series of all time. I mean...right next to Library Wars...but...ugh, I want to say it's my favorite but those two might kinda be tied!!! No, Library Wars is a bit above it... XP Anyways, I'm so glad I picked this up again. Asoika...he's really intriguing. I super wanted him to tell Haruna how he feels (thought he was just the nicest and greatest guy ever, but after a bit I started feeling kinda on edge about him and then questioning whether or not he was evil, lol. But really, he's a good...guy. Oh. And uh...guess that's not actually straightened out in this omnimbus. It is in the next one though. Which I have :3) Yes. Yes, I do realize I'm talking about fictional characters here. *Leans back in chair, crossing arms* But that doesn't mean I can't feel any awesomeness/and or passion about them!!!
(note: didn't take a pic of the thing, this was just a random page from the book that someone labeled as a gif thing on Tumblr :P) And O.o Just...just found out through looking up gifs of this that there's a movie. ... THERE'S A MOVIE!!! Oh my gosh, how could I possibly get my hands on it?!?!?! It's...not on Netflix of course... *sweats* Ugh!! Okay so anyways... Yeah. Really enjoyed this. Aaaand guess that's all I have to say... *waves*
