Le Cycle de Cyann #1

La sOurce et la sOnde

Rate this book

About the author

François Bourgeon

97 books53 followers
François Bourgeon is a French comics artist, author of several noted European comic books. Bourgeon was originally educated as a master stained glass artist, but difficulties in finding employment and a passion for drawing altered his course onto a different career. Getting illustrations published in magazines from 1971 eventually led him to pursue graphic storytelling and to develop his craft over the next few years. When the Les passagers du vent (The Passengers of the Wind) series was serialised in Circus magazine in 1979, it became recognised as one of the most important European comic series of its era. His graphic novels have ranged from nautical and medieval historical fiction to science fiction, and characteristically, within settings of violence and sexuality, epic stories revolve around strong female characters. He lives in Cornouaille in Brittany.

François Bourgeon's art is stunning. His colors and detailed exuberance depicting flora reminded me of fauve art. He created a world that is both futuristic and reminiscing of ancient human cultures, like the mayan, the egyptian or the easter island polynesian. It is just a pleasure to look at each page, even if the story can get quite confusing at times. This first book completely got me for the series.

This book was published just as I was finishing university in Paris, so I only snatched a quick read here and there in the bookshop - idiot that I was I didn’t buy it then. I found a digitised copy on the Internet Archive.

This is an exceptional work. The story is as intricate and detailed as the artwork. The author has created a complete world where everything makes sense according to the world’s internal logic. Even naming conventions, fashions, and hair styles, are all imbued with the unique culture of the planet. Family dynasties, religions, class warfare, historical conflict with a galactic empire, a mystery plague, all are mixed together thoroughly in a powerful story of family loyalties, family conflicts, political ambition, and statecraft. The flora and fauna of an alien planet, mutated humans from other planets, architecture, and spacecraft are all cutting edge sci-fi, beautifully original. Being very French, this story is also extremely erotic and a layer of jealousy and murder throws even more complexity in this multi faceted story.

The book also has a complex history with a notorious publishing dispute, a proper cause célèbre. I didn’t know that there was a whole series published in the decade following my departure from France. I will have to find it in print one day as an iPad screen does not do it justice.

Brilliant stuff. A definite wow, a definite five stars.

Narrative: ****
I'm calling a flag here on this writing duo for not supplementing a lOne page abOut what the Os meant and which groups were sOurce, sOunde and other after writing all of those words over so many pages without me being able to understand beyond Cyann's family- despite my intellectual effort that can decifer that great story is being written but has too many unanswered questions after 111 pages!

(I'd put this in AboutMe but not enough room left)
I was well educated K->University and gaining vocabulary has been a motivated life goal since then yet, even after reading @5000 books in the medium, I feel like I must be stupid or unperceptive often enough that I'm pondering if being a careful reader who flips<-back for clarity might be a foolish way to read. Liking the challenge of reaching a satisfying understanding, especially from my high percentage of foreign/translated and literary grade writing over the years, has led to serious frustration, bruised (intel)ego and weeks of hours from slow reading that may not be worth it. I have certainly incorporated a far higher amount of youth titles in recent times which must stem from being wary of such effort- so a regression in challenging reading material makes for another huge con for me against needing to understand! Why can't I be cool with simply missing big details or hoping the authors answer my questions before the ending if it's a series?

Even though I prefer his series Les Passagers du vent, I had a great time reading.
François Bourgeon remains one of those fantastic artist where telling is up to the quality of his drawing.
I didn't like the stereotype of some of the supporting characters very much, and the universe seems a bit confusing if you don't read sci-fi often.
It would be sad that this series was not translated into another language, especially the lover of good SF.
