Green crafts a heartfelt inspirational romance with “A Funny Thing Happened on the way to Your Wedding.” Dr. Kari Montgomery’s professional life is soaring. She just got tenure as a history professor at her alma mater, and she’s working on turning her dissertation into a book. Unfortunately, her personal life is in need of a defibrillator, after she dumps her fiancé when she discovers he’s a player.
Enter Pastor Randy Steele. As Kari makes her way to her cousin’s wedding in a rainstorm without an umbrella, Randy literally bumps into her. The chivalrous pastor shares his umbrella and a smile with Kari, which slowly cracks a fissure in her hardened heart.
After the wedding, Randy and Kari find themselves meeting often by coincidence prompting rumors they’re engaged – rumors that they don’t squash right away.
Kari’s heart starts to melt, but her ex-fiancé, Geoffrey, shows up to announce he’s engaged. It’s enough to freeze up her heart again.
Kari and Randy get to know each other through a charity project at church. Both have strong religious feelings. Can Kari and Randy find common ground, strength, and courage through their religious beliefs, or will Kari’s wounded heart prove too tough a challenge for Randy to overcome?
The story takes place in New York, from August to December, and Green makes great use of the setting to set the romance. The novel is paced well, slowing down in just the right places to allow the reader to take a breath before picking up steam again.
Kari and Randy are interesting characters. Kari is the more complex of the two. She’s trying to find herself after dumping her faithless boyfriend. Readers can identify with her. She’s got a great career, but was the cost love? It’s an issue that Kari wrestles with. To find the answer, she must get in touch with her foundations which includes in her faith.
Randy is a nice guy who stands up for his beliefs. He’s a character with a strong moral background which readers will find appealing.
Green’s writing style is easy and engaging. Her dialogue feels natural to the characters. Green uses a good economy of words to paint her characters’ world. The descriptions flow well, never lingering. Kari and Randy share a few kisses which make the novel a “sweet” one for the romance genre. Overall, “A Funny thing Happened on the Way to Your Wedding,” is an inspirational read that will leave the reader believing in the power of love.
This was a non-preachy inspirational, exploring the relationship between two strong central characters: a pastor and a young woman, who is determined in nature, yet vulnerable, having been seemingly cruelly rejected. Inspirational is not my first choice, but I would highly recommend this.
