National bestselling and award-winning author Joanna Campbell Slan was born in Jacksonville, Florida, but she grew up in a small town in Indiana. After graduating from Ball State University with a degree in journalism, she worked as a newspaper reporter, a newspaper ad salesperson, a television talk show host, a college teacher, a public relations professional, and a motivational speaker. In that capacity, she was named by Sharing Ideas Magazine as “one of the top 25 speakers in the world.”
Slan's work has appeared in five of the New York Times Bestselling Chicken Soup for the Soul books, and one of those became a television show. She is the author of nearly 80 books, nonfiction and fiction, including Death of a Schoolgirl, which won the 2013 Daphne du Maurier Award of Excellence.
Joanna's personal essays have appeared in the Chicken Soup for the Soul series, and one was made into a television program on the Pax Network. The college textbook Joanna wrote—Using Stories and Humor: Grab Your Audience—has been praised as an invaluable resource by Benjamin Netanyahu’s speechwriter and endorsed by Toastmasters, International.
RT Book Reviews has called Joanna “one of mystery’s rising stars.” Her first novel—Paper, Scissors, Death—was an Agatha Award finalist. It features Kiki Lowenstein, a spunky single mom who lives in St. Louis. The sixth book in that series will be released Summer 2013.
Kirkus Reviews has said, “Slan’s mysteries are most valuable for the well-developed characters and the issues they raise.” RT Book Reviews has said, “Kiki is so darn entertaining that she’ll keep readers hooked.” A series of short stories featuring Kiki are available on Kindle.
Joanna’s newest series—The Jane Eyre Chronicles—began with Death of a Schoolgirl (Berkley) and continues with the release of Death of a Dowager. The series features Charlotte Brontë’s classic heroine Jane Eyre as an amateur sleuth.
As “Lila Dare,” Joanna has penned the fourth book in the Southern Beauty Shop series—Wave Good-bye.
Joanna is married to David Slan. The Slans live on Jupiter Island, Florida.
At a special Halloween crop, Laurel is attacked and injured. There were no clues to her assailant. Meanwhile Kiki's landlord gives her notice that they need to move out in a week. His daughter wants to live in their cottage. Trying to contact her landlord, about his donkey bring out of food and water, Kiki finds him in his garage in his running car. His daughter drugged him and stole all his money, and was trying to kill him. Kiki finally figures out who attacked Laurel, and she is apprehended.
You just can't go wrong when you read one of Joanna's books! If you are into scrapbooking and mystery, you must read her series books. This was a real page turner that I couldn't put down. Kiki not only manages to try to solve an attempted murder, she puts her life (and her soon to be baby's) on the line to figure out and help her neighbor man. You also get craft instructions and recipes to boot.
This author is a great storyteller too many typos). Kiki has history that’s true. She talks about her pregnancy like she’s got some disease and needs to talk about it all the time. She’s not an invalid, has few boundaries (except for one tirade at the ‘family farm’. Six weeks into a pregnancy should be discussed as a baby bump. Either the author has never been pregnant or she had a different kind of pregnancy than most. It a good story but getting to be too many anomalies. I’m reading the series; so if you are a reader of the series, read in.
another enjoyable book that shows Kiki and her family growing literally and figuratively. It seems like Kiki just cannot catch a break as this time she and her family are facing an imminent move and she finds herself searching for answers to the attack on her employee, Lauren. In this book new relationships develop and old ones come under scrutiny. The ending leaves the reader hanging and wanting to read the next book in the series.
Wow! Another great entry in the Kiki Lowenstein series of books. Kiki and her family have been asked to leave their home because the landlords daughter has come back to town and is insisting on living there. She then tries to kill her father and does manage to steal all his money so I guess we will see what eventually happens. Kiki puts herself in danger to save him but seems to be okay. Looking forward to seeing how this plays out.

Cute cozy mystery. This is the only one in the series that I’ve read and I never felt lost. I like the story because the main character is named Kiki and that’s what my grandchildren call me. Kiki loves Diet Dr Pepper as much as I do. Kiki also scrapbooks like I do and it’s set around my favorite holiday, Halloween!
A book that gives us a mystery and recipes and craft ideas. Joanna brings us Kiki, a mom, who is also an amateur sleuth. The characters are well written, the mystery is spot on, and the humor and light heartedness works great. All of these elements combine to bring a great series to life. This is my first foray into the Kiki mystery series, but I plan to go back and read the others now.
Wow, another great book! This time Kiki has done the impossible. She went and figured out who dun'it again. But with so many possibilities, I don't see how she did it until the very end. Now that it's over I can't wait to read the next book.
Better than the last few, still don't love the trend of leaving parts of things unanswered. Still has editing issues as well, not as much in this one but still annoying. Hoping things get much better in the next one. I guess we'll see.
Gripping and compelling if a bit darker than my usual preference. One gripe though. 6 books later and still no concrete resolution concerning the money that her dead husband's partner stole. I like Kiki and want her to have a little more financial security. 😁
This was such a great read! Until I got to the end and discovered it was a series and I'd have to read the next one and the third one! I should have been told this upfront BEFORE I started reading the book! I dislike series books! Ugh!
The book was good as always. Had funny parts. Murder, blood.,sad parts . every time something happens to Kiki she can never caught her breath. She has all kinds of bad luck.
This was an exciting story with lots of romance and angst in addition to a murder. I am really enjoying the Kiki Lowenstein series. The writing is excellent and the characters are fun.
Kiki can get tangled in almost every situation that her family or friends have. She her landlord tells her she has a week to move she almost has a melt down. 7 months pregnant doesn't help. Then one of her staff gets stabbed. She's on the case. Read!!
The books in the Kiki Lowentstein Series keep getting better and more complex. I really love the development of the different characters and how everything turns out in the end. Sometimes it's for the the better, and sometimes it's not.
I did not see who the perpetrator was at all! I honestly thought it was one of the three ladies from the Episcopal Church who stabbed Laurel and not Faye. The other three ladies where responsible for the threats towards Laurel though, and I'm glad they where told to leave the congregation. It was also nice finding out more about Laurel such as she has diabetes, is a belly dancer, she's dating a priest, taking college courses at different community colleges, and she is Mert's biological daughter! It was really nice how Mert came to an agreement with Kiki to cooperate and brainstorm who could have been responsible for Laurel's injuries. At the end, Mert, Laurel, Johnny, and Father Joe came over to Kiki's house with brownies. Hopefully that means Mert and Kiki are well on their way to mending their relationship.
While I didn't see who was responsible for hurting Laurel, I did see Leighton's daughter totally taking advantage of her father and robbing him blind. There were times I wanted to yell at Kiki to go check on Leighton in person, even though she was so mad that Leighton was having her and her family move out of the little cottage. I'm glad Kiki was there to save the day as always.

A Halloween charity crop planned by Kiki Lowenstein is chopped short when her employee is attacked by a knife-wielding assailant. There's blood on someone's hands-but whose? A very pregnant Kiki connects the dots and quickly discovers that she has been clueless far too long. Closely held secrets point to a web of deception, one that has Kiki tied in knots. But the spunky scrapbooker refuses to lie down and die. Bumping her snooping skills up a notch, Kiki whittles down her suspect list. Meanwhile, on the home front, she's stabbed in the back by someone she trusted. Will our intrepid crafter survive the unkindest cut of all?
Kiki is now 7 months pregnant, has a new son and nanny, and her small house is feeling even smaller! Detweiler has also moved in and the word crowded doesn't even begin to describe it.
At work one of Kiki's employees and friend is attacked. On the home front Leighton's estranged daughter is back and he has told Detweiler that they to move so his daughter can have the house.
Action packed and much happier than some of the more recent books. Love Kiki and Detweiler now we have added more family to love. This is must read!!
The ever awesome Joanna Campbell Slan has done it again with Killer, Paper, Cut! While I love her early books, each book seems to get better! The way she blends daily life into her plots makes her characters and the events of the stories seem even more real. Kiki's life is complicated enough with her pregnancy, the arrival of Erik and Brawny, and having to learn how to run the store so that is makes money. Now she has a move in her immediate future. If that is not enough stress, a friend gets attacked during one of her crops! Totally awesome book!
Kiki puts together a Halloween crop for charity. Her friend and employee Lauren is knifed at the event. Who did it and what will Kiki do when she finds out about ties between Lauren and her former friend Mert. Also Kiki and family are being displaced from their home by their landlord's daughter Melissa. Melissa isn't very nice...what is she really up to?
Just have to say that really enjoyed this next story in Kiki's saga! Besides solving the mystery, there is a strong emphasis on characterization. Having said that, I strongly recommend reading this series from the very beginning. It's fascinating seeing Kiki and the other characters evolve over time; feels like they are coming to life! Looking forward to Kiki's next installment!
Halloween - perfect timing for another Kiki mystery (9) and the ongoing relationships with a wonderful set of characters. I love Erik and Brawny and think they are wonderful additions. I love the development of Anya in this book into a strong young lady. Anyone can take down a wall - and duct tape a criminal - and save the day!
I'm addicted to this series. I've been huge reading them because I want to know the rest of the story about Kiki and her ever expanding family. Great plot and a new mystery to solve. Kiki is a true survivor, check it out and you won't be disappointed in this wonderful series by Joanna Slan. I highly recommend starting with book one
It's amazing the imaginations of this author! This is book 9 and I'm on to book 10 and I can't wait to find out what's going to happen! Now Mrs. Holmes is in trouble and she needs Kiki! On to book yen to find the next chapter in the lives of the Lowenstein/ Detweilers!
The newest in the Kiki Lowenstein books by Joanna Campbell Slan was another page turner for me. I love the expanding family she has. The author is doing a fine job with character development. The plots were well developed as well.
