Initial Thoughts: A bit clichéd and full of eye rolling moments but I do enjoy the twist on the original tale.

Full Review:
When I started reading this book my eyes got a workout from all the rolling that was going on. This book is full of cliches which was pretty annoying at the beginning of the story. However, as annoying as it was, the story is also really entertaining. The beginning was like reading the script for a reality tv show. I even made a comment on Goodreads: the Wolfs are rivaling the Kardashians with the K names - Ken, Kent, Kassandra, and Kayla. Ruby Hood is this genius girl who is incredibly confident and beautiful. She has a best friend and attracts the attention of not one but two guys: Ken Wolf and Dylan Hunter. I think I smell a love triangle…

Speaking of that, thank the heavens that a love triangle didn't really happen. There was technically some sort of triangle but it got resolved pretty easily and it was relieving to see that the triangle wouldn't be the center of the story which was something I was worried about.

The story takes the standard story of the Little Red Riding Hood and twists it into a story of revenge and magic with a small addition from another iconic fairy tale. I was so surprised when the pieces finally fell into place that I wanted to smack my head on the table because it was so obvious. I'm not going to say anything because I don't want to spoil anything but I am constantly berating myself for not noticing sooner.

The characters definitely had to grow on me because at the beginning they were a bunch of clichés that I didn't have any interest in whatsoever. Ruby went through some pretty rough times at the beginning and that played a big part in her character development. I wish we could have gotten more information regarding her first quest - it felt like the reader was left in the dark like the guys. Kent started off as a bit of a stereotypical high school jock and he definitely grew on me as the story continued. Dylan went in the complete opposite direction for me. I started off liking him a lot as a character because he was the kinder of the two guys, but he honestly became dumber as the story continued which was pretty disappointing.

The story picks up speed once you hit the 30% marking and it became a lot easier to go through the story. I can't exactly pinpoint my exact feelings on the first book but it was a nice start to an interesting twist on the classic story. I'm definitely intrigued to see if the author is going to weave any other fairytales into the story. :)

I just love re-tellings, in fact they are a very fun type of book to read. I have read all the classics so when I get a chance to read a re-telling I can't help but enjoy them. I just always find them fun.

Which is how I would define this book. Fun. I read it quickly it is not very long, you can finish the book in one sitting if you like, it is roughly 200 pages of pure fun.

Ruby Hood was likable & a serious flirt. She flirts with Kent Wolf (get it?) who is a football star and clearly bad for her, but oh so fun. Sure there is drama and sorrow in this book, but at the same time Little Red Riding Hood had those elements so they have to be in the re-telling. Overall this was a really fun read that had some romantic and dramatic elements, that was all wrapped up in one short little package.

** I WAS GIVEN THIS BOOK, BY THE AUTHOR, IN RETURN FOR AN HONEST REVIEW **

-

This book had a great intro. The whole nightmare thing created suspense, surprise and intrigue. It also made me smile, thinking about the Nightmare version of this story in the Novel Hearts anthology, which I loved.

-

My only problem:

However, I’m a little confused. Just below Chapter 1′s title, it says – Before… – and I want to know before what? Before the nightmare? How long before? (This does make sense later in the book when there’s as After… But at the beginning, it’s confusing and you think you’ve missed something.)

I have to admit that there are a few things that, not being acquainted with the US very well, confuse and surprise me. The first is the whole listening to an iPod in class. It’s alien to me. If we did that over here, we’d get an earful, detention, have the iPod confiscated and probably have a complaint made to our parents. Or at least, that’s what would have happened when I was in high school. Also, the Homecoming (which I assume is like a UK Leaver’s Dance), the freshmen and varsity ideas completely throw me off because I have no idea what they mean. Over here ‘freshmen’ and ‘varsity’ are associated with university, at least in all the TV shows and movies we see. To be honest, all I know of Homecoming, is from Vampire Diaries, because of Caroline. Other than that, I’m lost. I think I’ll need to read this with an American/English translator. Lol.

-

Characters:

Saying that, Ruby Hood is a feisty, sassy independent girl, taking centre stage thanks to other characters. I really like Kent and Dylan, the ‘hot’ boys who fight over Ruby. Kent is loyal, a good friend, sweet and not at all overpowering. Dylan is a bit more possessive, right off the bat, which is both worrying and a little weird. But, saying that, Kent was a bit weird at the beginning too, with the whole ‘always being found hiding behind a bush’ scenario’. But it also made perfect sense later, as everything in the book does. Lilly was a nice little addition to lighten the mood every now and then. I will say that I didn’t like Kayla from the offset, which is good since I don’t think I was supposed to.

-

Story:

This is a a well paced novel about friendship, loyalty and love. The story moves along at a good rate, where you gets hints of what’s to come without having everything thrown at you. But it’s not slow either. When things start to happen, you get time to make up your own mind about what’s going on and what it all means for Ruby. There is one instance where everything happens a little too fast for me. Say around 50% of the way through at the pool. And those of you who’ve read it, will know what happens there and why I think that. So as not to give a massive spoiler, I’ll say only that as I began reading this chapter, I was utterly convinced that it was a nightmare similar to the beginning of the book. It seemed to happen out of the blue, with no warning or rhyme or reason and it was a little confusing when I realised it wasn’t a dream.

BUT…and this is a massive BUT – everything does make sense later. That’s kind of the key to the book. You might not quite get what’s going on throughout, but by the end, everything makes perfect sense. And when Ruby finds out what’s going on, you’re given her inability to believe it and a few snippets of what she knows so that you’re not just being told right off. I like that. It allows the reader to keep up with the story and feel as confused as Ruby does. So yes, all those bits and pieces of ‘I’m-not-quite-sure-what-just-happened’ are necessary. Because Ruby feels the same.

I will say that there are a few parts that I would have liked drawn out more or put in in more detail. E.g. the pool incident could have been led into a bit more, so it wasn’t such a shock and so confusing. I would have liked to have ‘seen’ Ruby’s training, rather than just being told about it afterwards. When she went away, it was all a bit sudden and left hanging in the air for me. It would have been great had we not gone from one event, to her returning after a month. It would have been nice to have maybe a chapter about her ‘quest’ to ease it all in. The story is always told from Ruby’s side so that could have been done. I also think the whole ‘powers’ thing was skimmed over. I get that it’s for the boys’ sake and to stun the reader with what she’s learned, but we didn’t even have a hint. It all just seemed to happen out of view.

The fact that I’m asking for more, should say a lot about this book. I can’t say much about the inner workings because it will give too much away. I really want you to read it and make up your own mind. Everything starts pretty much right away, so there’s nothing I can say that wouldn’t spoil it for you. Read it, enjoy it and tell me what you think. I want more and anyone who read the last chapter will know that we’re likely to get it. ;)

The Twistedly True Tale of Ruby Hood is a MUST READ! If you like fairy-tales, twisted fairy-tales or just a good old fashioned shifter romance, then try out this book. You won’t be disappointed.

So believe it or not, this is my very first paranormal book. I am not a vampire or werewolf fan..at all. I read this book because I know the author through blogging and was giving it away as a gift on a fairy tale hop. I wanted to make sure I was giving away something worth while.

I have to say it actually took my attention immediately. I liked the whole school stuff and friends and getting to know the characters, who all seemed totally believable. The story progressed in a good way and kept my full attention. It had some intrigue and mystery that I enjoyed very much. There's something that happens at a swim practice that really upset me, that's how invested I was. I even looked forward to reading it before going to sleep, so that's saying a lot. It held my interest for the entire book, yay!

I only take minimal issue with two things.

One. Ruby just jumped right into her new role without a hitch. She just moved right on in to the little house in the woods just like that, without question or fear. I kept wondering what happened to her mother? However, I have to say that it really did not affect the impact of the story equal to what I've written here. It's simply something I've noticed now with the last several books I've read…where's the angst? Where's the holy crap!? A little soul searching, maybe a serious freak out for a minute?

And the other, for me, was the pushing to bring in the fairy tale reference. I think this story really spoke well on it's own merit, and had my attention as a complete story separate from the original. It didn't happen throughout the book or anything, but It stood out from the flow of the story as forced.

All in all I really enjoyed this book and I'm thinking it has opened my eyes to the possibilities that a ya paranormal book has to offer…I can't wait to see what happens next…assuming there is a next! Oh gosh! I hope there's a next!

When I first started reading this book, I thought, oh no, but then I got to thinking about the creative title and as I read the creativeness soon became stronger and stronger.

This wasn't what I would exactly call a fairy tale. It was more a fantasy with a dark edge to it. Of course, it had some very much fairy tale characters in it. As I re ad I met the Wolf and Hunter families. Then there was Grams and the very mysterious Ruby Hood. Ruby is coming of age, but Ruby's coming of age is not the ordinary. Seventeen Ruby Wood becomes the Guardian of the Wood, after her Grams dies. However, her powers have a cost, and that cost has to do with her friends. I have to say that this was one book that I absolutely loved. The twists and turns give way to more and more surprises. This was a real page turner and was extremely hard to put down. I found the phrase "over the river and thru the wood" to see her grandmother. Amazing! Then enters Kent Wolf and his sister who were classmates for years of Ruby Wood. Then the story picks up a little faster when Dylan and his father Jared enter. I don't want to say anymore and give away anything more, but this is a Once Upon A Time with a wicked twist. There was quite a bit of wickedness in this book. The wicked step mother and the two wicked daughters. Everyone has to pick up this book and read and re-read it. It is wickedly good.

I was given a complimentary copy of THE TWISTEDLY TRUE TALE OF RUBY HOOD by Stephanie Greenhalgh for my view of the book. No other compensation took place.

The Twistedly True Tale of Ruby Hood by Stephanie Greenhalgh is a modern day adaptation of the old fairytales; where characters from our dreams, and even our nightmares exist. Ruby Hood will find out just who she is, and that all in her world is not as it seems. This coming of age story is full of lessons on family, loss, love, forgiveness, acceptance, courage, humanity and responsibility. The many twists and turns hold you enchanted from the beginning.

Stephanie Greenhalgh has done an excellent job of melding the fairytales, modern times, and her characters into an astounding story. Her style is refreshing and inviting to all. There are some small editing and proofreading errors in this book. Do not give up on the book. This story is too WONDERFUL to end there. Embark upon this journey, for its treasures and lessons are worth it.

I truly enjoyed reading this book. In fact, I fell in love with this book and was enthralled to learn that there was a sequel. It is my hope that this will turn into a long series. Each character in this book, whether you love them or hate them, has a story. Some things are clearly hinted at and others are alluded to in the background. It will leave you yearning for more

The Twisted True Tale of Ruby Hood

I was given this book by the author for an honest review. Now that THAT is over.....on to the good stuff!

I LOVED all the cross references and the innuendoes in this story! It's about a 17 yr old teenager by the name of Ruby Hood, that comes into her powers as Guardian of the Woods due to tragedy and fate.

I LOVED the reference of her having to go "over the river and thru the wood" to see her grandmother! Every time I read that in the story I had to pause and snicker as it was so cliché, but the author actually made it work!

Enter Kent Wolf and his sister who she'd gone to school with over the years, and developed into interesting characters throughout the story. When she introduced Dylan Hunter and his dad Jared, I cannot tell you how interesting it got after that!

The author pulled me into the story and I could hardly put it down! I look forward to reading the next one in this series, and to see what other characters she brings into this.

This book reminds me of Once Upon a Time, the way the characters are introduced into the story. She even had the wicked stepmother and her two wicked daughters!

The Twistedly True Tale of Ruby Hood (Ruby Hood Series)
by Stephanie Greenhalgh

Set in a small town of Woodsville, Ruby Hood is looking forward to the Homecoming dance. She meets a (cute) new boy, Dylan Hunter she also likes a football player Kent Wolf. Ruby does not get along with Kent's sister Kayla at all.

Ruby and her best friend Lilly Fair decide they will try to avoid Kayla and not let her "get to them". Soon something sinister is going on in the small town and Ruby finds herself dead center. Will she be able to use her inner power and strength to save herself and the Town?

A well written fantastic take on the story of Little Red Riding Hood. The story is original, even though it has inferences to the old fairy tale. I really liked Ruby, she is wise for her young (17 years) age. I also liked the suspense and action. Those who love dark fairy tales will enjoy The Twistedly True Tale of Ruby Hood.

First paragraph:
“Grams, are you ill? Why are you in bed?” the girl asked, setting her bag down on the overstuffed chair next to the bed. “Oh, just not feeling like myself today, honey,” Grams replied. “Grams, what big ears you have!” exclaimed the girl, as concern crept into her voice. The floor board creaked as she approached the bed.

"The Twistedly True Tale of Ruby Hood" is a young adult contemporary retelling of the classic Little Red Riding Hood, complete with typical teenage angst over boyfriends, dances, and swim teams, but also filled with the wonder and enchantment of a good fairy tale. Here, Ruby Hood's childhood friend Kayla Wolf starts acting bipolar after she turns 18, and a mysterious young man named Dylan Hunter shows up. Some beast slaughtered beloved pet puppy dogs Hansel and Gretel in the Woods. Grams is missing.

This is a fun, clean book, highly enjoyable, and recommended.

I may be a grumpy reviewer lately, but I again am not feeling the love for the book. First of all, they're all hot and gorgeous (except for the chunky sister). I get it. Must we always hear about it how nicely the jeans fit? And enough with the Doc Martens. Second, the protagonist's development is uneven. Right away upon having to take on her role in the Wood, she's able to step in with an outstanding solution with almost a regal attitude, but then she instantly drops into a major depression? Overall, I guess it wasn't badly written; it's more the plot and characters that I just didn't fall in love with. And I get that the writer had to walk a fine balance between obvious references and obscure references to classic fairy tales, but I'd prefer that she had erred on the side of obscurity rather than obviousness. I would have preferred more subtlety. Nonetheless, it wasn't a bad book, or I wouldn't have finished it. I think the rating says it perfectly: It was ok.

As you can probably tell from the title, this is a fairy tale retelling of Little Red Riding Hood but there is more to that. At first, I thought it would revolve around the Little Red Riding Hood retelling, but there was actually more than that.

The world was really interesting. It was modernized, but there are some twists and turns that make the world very unique. To be honest, I was kind of disappointed in the book. It was an okay read, but it was very cliché and I just did not like the romance. It felt like insta-love and I just couldn't get into it. The love-triangle was just not working for me and Ruby annoyed the hell out of me most of the time.

Overall, this book was okay, it just wasn't for me. It was a fairly short read, but I just wished that it would be longer so that the characters would have time to develop, especially the romance because I just didn't like it at all.

I love paranormal books and expecially ones with a fairy tale twist like this one.
I think Author Stephanie Greenhalgh did an excellent job with this paranormal retelling of red riding hood.

This book kept my attention throughout and kept me excited about reading it. There was mystery in the story along with the paranormal and it was really cool to see.

All I can say is SURPRISED!!!

I was expecting a fairy tale. Well I got that and so much more! It falls easily into the paranormal genre... I can even see it as a romance or mystery. It takes talent to take a story that has been told so many different ways already and put a fresh hip spin on it! I couldn't quit turning the pages to see what happened next!

Great entertainment

I liked that the story had a little of everything in it, for werewolves to to shifters to fairytales. I would have liked the grandmother to have a bigger role I Ruby's transformation.
