First read this years ago when i was in primary school, and i remember loving this story.
It is a children's book, so don't expect anything too in depth or intricate. I rated this based on how much i enjoyed it when i was little.

The book is about a bunch of school students who perform a ritual as part of a prank, and accidentally end up selling their souls to the devil for real. He offers them their dreams on a silver platter in return for their souls, but if they refuse they will each meet a terrible end.

Oh boy we’ve got a wild one today. In my quest to look at middle grade horror series, I found this series. There’s a few under this name but this one is form the UK and was published from 1997 to 2001 from what I can gather. I don’t think it came out over here which is why it’s obscure. The author is Edgar J Hyde and yep, it’s another MT Coffin case where it’s really a bunch of ghostwriters.

This one is by Alan J Henerson who I found nothing on. The about the author page has wacky lore on “Edgar” and they really ran with this fake guy to the point where there is a whole entry about his backstory. Seriously, it’s called “Edgar Escapes”. Imagine if Spinetinglers did a book about MT Coffin’s lore.

The publisher seems to still about the series as the website is current with them reprinting them as recently as 2020. And the site claims NEW entries are coming in 2024. Yes, this of all series will be coming back, supposedly. Wild.

The covers and titles sound wild so I had to read one, as thankfully archive has most of them. I picked this one because of the premise so let’s do it. Ben wants to join this elite group of high school kids whoa are vaguely defind as just some group.

They have him do an initiation to join and part of it has them doing a spell to summon a demon. Yes. It's actually a joke but somehow one of them actually found a book that indeed summons a demon. A minor demon who works for the devil himself. Yes, really. He says he will give them their hearts desire in exchange for their souls, and says he will give them book the souls later.

He also says if they don't he will torture them so that's an easy choice. But then it turns out he was doing this without his master's permission so the Devil shows up to set things straight. From there they deal with him.

Yes, we got a kid's book featuring the actual devil. It's not a stand in like you sometimes see, it's him. I bet this wasn't published in the US because all the soccer man's get mad at these kind of books as it is without the actual devil being in it.I have no problem with it, it's just surprising.

This book was weird. It gets started super quickly with no real build up. Ben is a nothing protagonist, being likable enough but only because he has no real traits to dislike to begin with. They tease him wanting to be popular and a scientists or something but they don't go into it.

It has a rushed feel despite taking a while to explore the premise. I do like the deal with the devil concept and it picks up in the latter half as the devil makes bad things happen since they refuse to give him their souls. This one gets dark, it has a body count and it is shocking and nuts. I expected any deaths to be reversed but spoilers, nope.

It doesn't quite linger on things enough though. Big things will happen and they'll be like "aw shucks". Writing is passable but not detailed enough for the events that happen. A few moments sell them but it could have gone further. The other characters fit basic types which is fine but again, they don't push them quite far enough.

The ending is wack. It's the most abrupt ending I've seen...maybe ever. It just...stops, with no real resolution. It has the biggest downer ending ever...which I kind of like. Nothing gets resolved and Ben is in a pretty terrible position with it no giving us much hope. That's cool but it feels more like Alan ran out of time and just...stopped there, it's not a real ending it's more like they stopped right before the climax.

It feels like The Best Friend times 1q which I can respect at least. It's an odd book. There's nothing too bad here, it just more empty than it should. Yet it did had something to it that kept me gong. It's short and the ideas are interesting. I respect the use of more taboo stuff with dark moments, plus the ending.

it's like Shivers where it has dark places and good ideas with a more just fine execution. Better written than some of those. So, it's a light Decent. Very light, so close to lower but the bits that work were just enough. Even the ending I respect enough despite how abrupt it is.

It's not one I recommend if you want something strong but if you want something more daring for kids, here it is. I wanna see if the others are like this but for now, this sure was something. Still wild this series is being kept relevant in some ways.

So there's that. I hope I get a stronger book soon. I'm starting work on the review of the IM Fine sequel at least, hope that's a banger. Don't know the next casual read, could be a good one, could be more "fine" stuff, guess we'll find out. See ya then.

I'm not really into these types of books (the way that it isn't a chunky book) but I want to read it because it looks good. I read lots. I just love reading! There are lots of interesting parts in this book! I don't like books that end with a question for you to imagine the answer, and that is like this book! But I suppose it can be OK.

Nice and dark. The concept is good, the execution as with a lot of the Creepers series, isn't great. Very stilted dialogue.
