About the author

Narayan Sanyal (bn: নারায়ণ সান্যাল) was a well-known & versatile writer of modern Bengali literature. He received several awards for literature including Rabindra Puraskar for Aporupa Ajanta (Bangla: অপরূপা অজন্তা) in 1969, Bankim Puraskar for Rupmonjori (Bangla: রূপমঞ্জরী) in 2000, and Narasingha Dutta Award. Many of his books were filmed and he won the Best Film Story Writer Award for Shotyokam (Bangla: সত্যকাম) by Bengal Film Journalists.

Sanyal wrote numerous books that dealt with many topics, such as children, science, art and architecture, travels, psychiatry, technology, refugee problems, history, biographical pieces, encyclopedia of animals, social novel and Devadasi-related. He also wrote a series of detective fiction called the Kanta (Thorn) series, the framework of which was borrowed from the Perry Mason series of novels by Erle Stanley Gardner. Some of the stories were inspired from popular Agatha Christie novels like Mousetrap, ABC Murders, etc.

Interestingly, this talented author also preferred writing books on deep shadow of many world famous works. One of the most popular Sci-Fictions Nakshatraloker Debatatma (Bangla: নক্ষত্রলোকের দেবাত্মা) is based on the transformation of human race from primitive creature to civilized intelligent species controlling the whole earth. Then it deals with Jupiter exploration and a super intelligent Computer HAL. The three parted book is a clear shadow of 2001: A Space Odyssey by Arthur C. Clarke. In his book, NS renamed HAL as 'Jantra-Na.' In his mother tongue Bangla, it means 'Not a Machine'.

His most popular work is Biswasghatak (Bangla: বিশ্বাসঘাতক) written about the Manhattan project that developed the first US Atom Bomb. This book is based on the shadow of Brighter than a Thousand Suns: A Personal History of the Atomic Scientists (1970), by Austrian Robert Jungk. Not a shadow, but almost translation in some parts. Few of the illustrations in this book have been taken from few Russian school level books.

Another book Timi Timingil (Bangla: তিমি তিমিঙ্গিল) is on Whales. This stands on an article published in Readers Digest. But while NS accepted this for Timi Timingil, he never mentioned or thanked authors of 2001 or Brighter.

Most of the "Kanta" series stories were copied or heavily inspired from Perry Mason novels. For example, "Ristedar-er Kanta" was copied from The case of the beautiful beggar, "Abhipurbak Ni-Dhatu Au-er Kanta" was inspired from The case of the restless redhead. Some of the stories were inspired from Agatha Christie stories. For example, "Dress Rehearsal-er Kanta" was inspired from Three Act Tragedy. NS acknowledged his inspirations in his first few "Kanta" series books, but forgot to do so for the latter ones.

Thousands of NS fans feel sorry of this as a man of his talent could have developed something even better instead of just 'Copying' and retouching others works while he had indeed produced some excellent works himself.

But it is undoubtedly accepted by all that NS was one of the finest authors in Bengali and he was a class apart from the flock of contemporary Bengali writers those who too dependent on sentiment and emotional overdose in their writings and too dependent on monopolist Bengali media/publication groups in commercial front.

প্রাচ্যের পেরি ম্যাসন পি কে বাসুকে সৃষ্টি করেছেন নারায়ণ সান্যাল। গোয়েন্দা বাংলা সাহিত্যে কম নেই। তবে গোয়েন্দা ও আইনজীবী একেবারেই দুর্লভ। সেই হিসেবে পি কে বাসু সাহেব একেবারে ব্যতিক্রম। নারায়ণবাবুর কলমে 'কাঁটায় কাঁটায়' সিরিজের পহেলা খণ্ডের প্রতিটি কাহিনি অত্যন্ত সুখপাঠ্য হয়ে উঠেছে। প্রতিটি কাহিনি বেশ ভালো হলেও সবচেয়ে চমৎকার লেগেছে 'সোনার কাঁটা'।

লেখাগুলো খাঁটি মৌলিকত্ব দাবি করতে পারে না। আগাথা ক্রিস্টি ও স্ট্যানলি গার্ডনারের একাধিক বইয়ের অনুপ্রেরণায় উপন্যাসগুলো রচিত। তবুও নারায়ণ সান্যালের নিজস্ব লেখার গুণে আনন্দ নিয়েই পড়া যায়। অর্থাৎ দেশীয় পটভূমিতে শতভাগ সফলভাবে কাহিনিগুলো ফুটিয়ে তুলেছেন নারায়ণ স্যানাল।

Narayan Sanyal is a Bengali author who was born in Krishnagar to Chittasukh Sanyal and Basantalata Devi. His name was initially Narayandas Sanyal in school life. Although Sanyal is known mostly as a novelist, he was also an eminent civil engineer by profession. After graduating in science from the University of Calcutta, he passed Bachelor of Engineering from Bengal Engineering College in 1948. Thereafter he joined Public Works Department and later National Buildings Organisation, Ministry of Works and Housing, Eastern Region, Govt of India. He was a Fellow of the Institution of Engineers (India) and a Fellow of the Association of Engineers (India).

He wrote a series of detective fiction called the Kanta [কাঁটা] (Thorn) series. Most of the stories were inspired from various foreign novels of Erle Stanley Gardner and Agatha Cristie. The protagonist of Kanta series thriller, Barrister P.K. Basu was based on the character Perry Mason.

It must be clearly mentioned that Sanyal did not just copy, he took the central theme and then adopted in proper Bengali atmosphere, so that the reader can find it as their homely incidents. Besides, he everywhere mentioned the source, the changes he made in his script and why these are necessary. He also tried to keep the nomenclature resembling the original ones so as to offer his gratitude. He often referred P. K. Basu to "the Perry Mason of the East", as he was inspired to create Basu from this masterpiece of Erle Stanley Gardner.

It is undoubtedly accepted by all that NarayanBabu was one of the finest authors in Bengali and he was a class apart from the flock of contemporary Bengali writers those who too dependent on sentiment and emotional overdose in their writings and too dependent on monopolist Bengali media/publication groups in commercial front.

The Vol 1 of the collection called “Kataye Kataye” features the following stories:
Sonar Kanta [সোনার কাঁটা] (Written:1974 Published:October 1974; Inspiration: mousetrap by Agatha Christie; Dedication: Late Byomkesh Bakshi)
After his first novel Jodi Jantem, the author changed the character Barrister Basu to be an aged lawyer, whose wife Ranu is made invalid & Suborna alias Mithu, their only daughter is died in an accident. This novel marks the proper starting of the series. This is based on a murder of Ramen Guha, a policeman and some other incidents at The Repose, a hotel at Ghum, Darjeeling, run by the Mitra couple, Sujata & Koushik Mitra.

Machher Kanta [মাছের কাঁটা] (Written:1974, Published:March 1975; Dedication: Samarjit Gupta)
Mitra couple returns Kolkata, after selling the hotel and starts a private detective agency, named Sukoushali [সুকৌশলী] at Basu's residence at New Alipore. This story revolves about Supriya Dashgupta [সুপ্রিয় দাশগুপ্ত], a manager of a Bombay based farm. At the end of the story, the caught person is proved to be different than the original culprit.

Pother Kanta [পথের কাঁটা] (Written:1975, Published:January 1976; Dedication: Mukul Chakraborty)
Old Jagadananda Sen lives with granddaughter Nilima Sen, nephew Jogananda and Jogananda's relative Shyamal. Mahendra, his ex-employee, whom he revoked, suddenly comes back and starts blackmailing Jagadananda. He, then seeks help from Basu. Meanwhile, police arrests Jagadananda in charge of killing his own nephew Jogananda. Joydeep, Nilima's fiance shadows another ex-employee of Jagadananda, Yu Siang, a Burmese, who is also supposed to come India to blackmail the old man. Finally, Basu succeeds to make him free catching the culprit.

Ghorir Kanta [ঘড়ির কাঁটা] (Written:1976, Published:January 1977; Dedication: Suresh Prasad Lahiri Chaudhuri)
Rabi Bosu, a police inspector, who is prevalent in some later stories, is introduced. This story is about a ticket of lottery and a murder. Basu makes Prakash Sengupta, a doctor free from all charges of killing his friend, Kamalesh Mitter.

Kuler Kanta [কুলের কাঁটা] (Written:1977, Published:May 1978; Dedication: Kamal Hossain)
Minati Roychaudhury, alias Minti, a lost granddaughter of GokulChandra Roychaudhury is found back. This story has a very little to do with Basu but remains an extremely intriguing mystery thriller.

This collection is a must for every fan of mystery and suspense and remains a classic of the Bengali Literature in the genre.

অসাধারণ কিছু চরিত্র, অসাধারণ কিছু ঘটনা, অসাধারণ কিছু সমাপ্তি...এই নিয়েই যেনো পুরো কাঁটা সিরিজ। বেশি কিছু বলার দরকার বোধ করি না। যারা গোয়েন্দা গল্পের নেশায় বুদ থাকেন, তাদের জন্যে অসম্ভব মানানসই একটি সিরিজ 🍂

ব্যারিস্টার পি কে বাসু। ক্লাস ফাইভ-সিক্স এ পড়ার সময় এই নামের সাথে পরিচিতি। তখন গোয়েন্দা বলতে শুধু ফেলুদাকেই চিনি। ওই বয়সে তোপসে, জটায়ু, দেশ-দেশান্তরে গোয়েন্দা অভিযান বেশি টানতো। পি কে বসুর গল্পগুলো প্রাপ্ত-বয়স্ক, বড্ডো বেশি কথার ওপর কথা, কোর্ট-রুম ড্রামা। পড়েছিলাম বেশ কয়েকটা গল্প, তেমন ভালো লাগেনি।


এর অনেক বছর পর নাগচম্পা পড়লাম। মোটামুটি লেগেছে। লেখক নিজেও বলেছেন নাগচম্পা হচ্ছে pivot, এক্সপেরিমেন্টাল।

এবার আসি কাঁটায় কাঁটায় সিরিজ। এক কথায় অসাধারণ লাগলো। আমি বহু গোয়েন্দা, রহস্য গল্প পড়েছি, ওয়েব সিরিজ,TV সিরিজ, সিনেমা দেখেছি। এখন গল্প কিছুটা পড়লেই আততায়ী কে তা বুঝে ফেলি বেশিরভাগ ক্ষেত্রে। তাও কাঁটায় কাঁটায় আমাকে মুগ্ধ করেছে।

প্রথমত, গল্পের ধার প্রচন্ড গতিশীল। একটুও ভাবতে দেবে না কি থেকে কি হয়ে গেলো, কোথাও lag নেই।

প্রতিটি গল্পে চরিত্র-গঠন ক্ষুরধার। আদালতের জজ, পাবলিক প্রসিকিউটর, গোয়েন্দা, আততায়ী, আসামি, শিকার। গল্পের মুখ্য চরিত্র বাসু বলে সেই শুধু চালাক, চতুর, বুদ্ধিমান, আর চরিত্রদের বোকা সাজিয়ে রাখবেন, এরকম নয়। এতে গল্প জমে আরো ভালো।

বেশিরভাগ গল্পে দেখা যায় প্রাইভেট গোয়েন্দার নামে পুলিশরা একেবারে গদগদ। অমুক গোয়েন্দা আসছে শুনেই পুলিশ ইন্সপেক্টর ধরে নেয়, যাক বাঁচা গেলো, আমার রেহাই। সেই গোয়েন্দাকে সবরকম সাহায্য করতে পুলিশ প্রস্তুত। এখানে বাসুর সাথে পুলিশ মহলে সম্পর্ক আদায়-কাচঁকলায়। হতে পারে বাসু যেহেতু criminal lawyer। কিন্তু এই রেষারেষির জন্যই ব্যাপারটা আরো জটিল আর ইন্টাররেস্টিং হয়ে দাঁড়ায়। চরিত্রর বাস্তব প্রফেশনালিজম, বাসুর প্রতি কোনো রকম বাড়তি eulogy কারোর মধ্যে নেই।

গোয়েন্দা তো আসামি ধরে দিয়ে চলে এলো। এরপর? সে কি আদৌ দোষী সাব্যস্ত হলো। নাকি বেকসুর খালাস পেলো। নাকি তাকে ফাঁসানো হয়েছিল। কোনো গোয়েন্দা গল্পে Post পুলিশ কাস্টডি কাহিনী পাবেন না, ব্যতিক্রম কাঁটায় কাঁটায়।

পি কে বাসু, criminal lawyer cum detective। যদিও গোয়েন্দাগিরির ভার তিনি সুজাতা আর কৌশিকের ওপর দিয়েছেন, আখেরে তারা সহায়তা করেন। বুদ্ধি খরচ করে বাসু। তাহলে বোঝাই যায় কি ডেডলি কম্বিনেশন। এরকম একজন মানুষ যখন কোর্টরুমে lawyer হিসেবে নিজের কাজ করেন -- কি দারুন একটা atmosphere, কোর্টরুম ড্রামা, কাহিনী অপেক্ষা করে থাকে তা ভাষায় বিবরণ করা যায় না। সঙ্গে রয়েছে নারায়ণ সান্যাল মতো প্রতিভাশীল লেখকের যেকোনো ফিল্ডে অগাধ পড়াশোনা, জ্ঞান, পান্ডিত্য- তাই সাহিত্যের বিচরণ-ক্ষেত্রের অসীম পরিধি। তার গড়া গোয়েন্দা cum lawyer , কি massive সৃষ্টি বুঝতেই পারছেন।

তা সত্ত্বেও ফেলুদা সবসময়ে ১ নম্বরেই থাকবে আমার কাছে। কিন���তু ব্যোমকেশ, কর্নেল নীলাদ্রি, কিকিরা, কিরীটি সবাইকে ছাপিয়ে পি কে বাসু- বার-at-ল, যার সুনাম বার-কাউন্সিল এ শোনা যায় বিখ্যাত শেষ ব্রিট��শরাজ্ ব্যারিস্টার barwell সাহেবের পর, সেই পি কে বাসু আমার গোয়েন্দা লিস্টে ২ নম্বর জায়গায় দখল করে নিয়েছে, তার নেশা আর পেশার জোরে।

বইটি পড়তে গিয়ে প্রথমেই যে বিষয়টি চোখে পড়ে, তা হলো প্রচুর বানান ভুল ও প্রুফ রিডিংয়ের অভাব। এমন গুণী লেখকের বইয়ে এই ধরনের ত্রুটি দৃষ্টিকটু মনে হয় এবং পাঠের স্বাচ্ছন্দ্য কিছুটা ব্যাহত হয়।

তবে গল্পগুলির গুণগত মান যথেষ্ট উঁচুস্তরের। নারায়ণ সান্যালের লেখনী নিয়ে নতুন করে বলার কিছু নেই—তাঁর স্বতন্ত্র ভাষাশৈলী ও গল্প বলার দক্ষতা বরাবরই মুগ্ধ করে। তবুও, কিছু কিছু গল্প আরেকটু বেশি সংহত হতে পারত, যাতে পাঠকের মনে গভীরভাবে দাগ কাটে।

সব মিলিয়ে, গল্পগুলো উপভোগ্য, এবং এই সিরিজের পরবর্তী বই পড়ার আগ্রহ আরও বেড়ে গেল।

Basu saheb amr kache emotion eto sukhho jinish ar eto sundar dimensions ache ar somoy take eto sundar kore porokh korte paren oshadaron just feluda ar byomkesh teheke alada but kono onghse kom noi... Rani basu orofe ranu ❤️ sob cheye sundar.... Basu ranu ke khub valobasen ...roshho somadhane ranu tar assistant.. boi ta ek kothay lekhar chesta kori " Tahle ranu tomar ki mone hoi atotaye ta ke hote pare " ? ❤️

I have absolutely enjoyed the stories! These are not his original work, but being a native speaker of Bangla, I had a wonderful time reading it while not being burdened by the sense of understanding. If I was to read the original works, I would have enjoyed lesser. Now moving on to the other books of the series!

গোয়েন্দাগল্পের সৃষ্টিকর্তাদের মধ্যে নারায়ন সান্যাল কতটা underrated তা তাঁর সৃষ্ট পিকে বাসু চরিত্রটি থেকে অনুধাবন করা যায় | গোয়েন্দা গল্পের পরতে পরতে একজন আইনজ্ঞের বাচনশৈলী ও তীক্ষ্ণ ক্ষুরধার বুদ্ধি পঠনকালে প্রকট হয় | ষড়রিপু কেন্দ্রাবর্তী হয়েও গল্পগুলি সহজে অনুমান যোগ্য নয় যতক্ষন না ব্যরিষ্টার মহাশয় তার End Climax টি মঞ্চস্থ করছেন। এই Series এর বাকি সংকলন গুলি পড়ার অপেক্ষায় রইলাম | |

ঘড়ির কাঁটা খুব একটা ভালো লাগল না। কাউকে খুন করার পর হোটেলের করিডোর দিয়ে বডি নিয়ে যাওয়া হচ্ছে, আর রক্তে করিডোর ভেসে যাচ্ছে না? Logic is messed up here.

কূলের কাঁটা গল্পের শেষে সংকেতের জায়গায় শার্লক হেবোর সঙ্গে অদ্ভুত মিল আছে। একই লেখক, একই ভাবনা থেকে লিখেছেন... বোঝাই যাচ্ছে। 4* দিলাম তাই।

Tbh I love the main character P.K Basu as well as 3 others characters,it is basically a scenario of after Byomkesh Bokshi's death but the character is underrated.people who love to read mysterious stories must give it a try i assure you, you guys will find it interesting.

বাংলার যেই পাঠক এর গোয়েন্দা উপন্যাস ভালো লাগে, তাদেরকে অবশ্যই রেকমেন্ড করব, গল্পগুলোতে ভিনটেজ কলকাতার একটা ভাইব ছিল, যা আমাকে আসলেই মুগ্ধ করেছেন, লেখকের গল্পকে এগিয়ে নিয়ে যাওয়া প্রশংসনীয়, সব গুলো গল্পই মোটামুটি ভালো লেগেছে, অবশ্যই একবার হলেও পরে দেখার মতো, 5 ⭐s

Copied full plotlines at times I hear, from James Hadley Chase (whom I have only sporadically read); but acknowledged the copy. And well written. Very well written. Unputdownable. High 3, almost 4.

আমি সাধারণত পুরনো লেখাগুলোই বেশি পড়ি...কেন এটা আগে পড়িনি তার কারণ আগে কোন রিভিউ চোখে পড়েনি। সত্যিই দারুন একটা বই। নারায়ন সান্যালের বই এটাই প্রথম
