One of the Most-Popular Science Fiction Series of 2012!
If you haven't read the other books in the series it might be a good idea to pick them up:
If you haven't read books 1-4 of this series, you're going to be lost trying to read this as a standalone tale. Readers of the series will be pleased with this latest installment as the action picks right up where we left off with Book 4. It would also appear Harris' writing is a lot better with some editing, which was a problem in some of the earlier installments. I was a little saddened this chapter of the series is ending, but I am looking forward to "Part 2" of the continuing saga.
The scope of the whole series has taken a completely different direction. Seems to me to be a wildly divergent tangent, completely opposite the original storyline. I thought when I said in my last review that there was probably 20-30 more books that I was wildly exaggerating. Now I’ve counted 20 more. I’ve grown tired of the tale. That Is All
This book was a fun read and a bit predictable. The characters and plot have developed well. The characters have a lot to accomplish in order to save earth and it's people. The plot has grown and adds new aliens to the mix.
It sure is like fast food - a lot of adventures with a fast pace. But one the other hand same patterns repeat over and over again and overly cowardly or treacherous aliens plot against humans.
In general I have enjoyed the book in The Human Chronicles series. I thought the previous book in the series was excellent. This one was good but not as good as the previous one. It also felt like a quick read but then, the books that I have just read before this one were quite long ones so I guess everything is just a matter of perspective.
While the previous one was very much filled with action, this one was more on the slow side. Sure, the “new” bad guys, the Kracori, where indeed spreading some havoc but there was no real fleet battles like in the previous book. The human fleet spent most of its time running back and forth between Juir and Earth deciding which planet to defend and Adam was mostly holed up in the underground bunker on Juir never really getting much of an opportunity to display his human abilities. Do not worry, there are few fights to liven things up but not as much as we have perhaps been accustomed to.
Now, as I said, it was still an enjoyable book but a lot of the book felt more like wrap-up of the main story. This brings me to the ending. I will not reveal how it all ended of course but I really think the ending was weird, not to mention somewhat naive. I almost felt a bit let down. The author hints that this was the conclusion of “Part One” of The Human Chronicles saga so I guess (hope) we will se more stories in this universe and maybe the next book makes the ending of this one more logical. There were indeed enough loose ends to spin quite a few stories from.
The last book of Part 1 of the Human Chronicles. These books are really a fun read. Not too deep but with enough to keep you going along. The characters are likable, with enough naivete and cynicism mixed in. A very interesting concept as human being the supermen of the universe.
