The Demon Duke and I

Rate this book
Tomboy. Potty mouth. Cyber geek.

That’s who 24-year-old photo blogger Georgina “George” McCartney really is. But because her father’s death suddenly makes her a “ward” of her odious step-aunt, George’s world is turned upside down as she’s forced into leading a life of respectability in the kingdom of Chalys, where ladies dazzle in corsets and petticoats, gentlemen go a-courting with carriage rides and grand balls, and anything electrical or digital is forbidden.

Kidnapped. Hunted. Seduced.

All George wants is a stolen adventure after dark, but instead she finds herself drugged – or at least she thinks she is. How else can she explain the way she finds her beautiful, sexy, and powerful captor, Silviu, absolutely irresistible? Plus, he’s crazy. He kisses George like he owns her, tells George creatures from Hell are after them, and he believes his demon half will gain a soul by making her his heartkeeper. Say what? Does he mean ‘housekeeper’?

Ohhhh mmmmmmyyyyyyy ggggggooooooooooooooooooooddddddddddddddddddddd wwwwhhhyyy

IT

OOOVVEERR?!?!?!?!??!?!?!?!

I LOVE this! It was only 154 pages, but damn! I want more! T_T

Marian Tee went back to writing adult characters, but I seriously think this book shows her maturity in her writing. Or maybe it's because everyone's living in a Victorian-influenced era? I don't know, but gosh! Holy shit balls! O.O So George is a real potty mouth, but it's a defense mechanism for her. She's different from the usual innocently naive girls Marian writes about, which is also a refreshing experience in its own way. She's hilarious, though, and I love that her antics, foul mouth and stubbornness make Silviu smile.

George lives in Asphodel, a town in the kingdom of Chalys, but before that, she lived in the states with her parents and four other guardians. Her step-aunt, aka Lady Beyotch, has been trying to hook her up with guys she can control because of all the inheritance left to George which, by the way, can't be touched by her until she turns twenty-five. (That's months away). The opening starts off with her leaving her room via the window and telling her friend, Desire, to not say a word to her aunt. She wants to take pictures of the woods on a particularly beautiful night of the full moon. It'd have been a great idea- anywhere else.

A full moon might mean a glorious night in most parts of the world, but not here -never in Chalys.

It switches to Silviu Draghici's POV, and we see him coming to the realization that he is about to die because he has yet to find his heartkeeper, the woman who would give his damned half a soul and thus his redemption. He is the Duke of Brimstone, the home to supernatural creatures in Chalys that hide from the humans. His Galere, his blood bonded brothers, join him that night to reluctantly wish him farewell. Mihail, the vampire; Adrijan, the half-cetus; and Ilie Marcovici, the wolf. All marquis and heirs to the territories of their own race within the kingdom. Already this is starting out awesome, and when Silviu waves goodbye and decides to have a little 'stroll' through the Woods of the Wraiths before his death, he stumbles upon a trespasser.

A very, very foul mouthed trespasser.

Their meeting is hilarious because the whole time she's cursing at her uncooperative camera, he's watching her with slight amusement that he never felt towards a human before. Still, a trespasser is a dead human, and as he prepares to kill her, she turns- and then it hits him. She is The One. The poor woman goes through a lot- even goes so far as to take her shirt off in the hopes of performing a Filipino legend about being immune to illusions set upon a person by the elementals. Silviu sees her undressing and in the end confronts her.

*Mmm, "confronts" her.*

XD

She agrees to be his heartkeeper in order to be let go, and almost immediately, he falls weak. And then of all the luck, imps and arch demons appear, trying to kill one or both to attain the title and power of the Duke of Brimstone. She would've run for it, but the sight of all these creatures makes her reach out to her captor.

Better the devil you know than the devil you don't.

She gets sent away on his horse Granite, the last of the Pegasus, and flies off. However, the thought of leaving him doesn't sit well with her, and in the end she goes back to help fight. The Galere think she's crazy, but might be the perfect stubborn match for their friend. Later on she passes out, and wakes up in an unfamiliar room. Ilie is sent to check up on her, part of their plan being to let rumors fly about him and the new human possibly being involved, and although he knows Silviu would kill him for sleeping with her, he wouldn't mind if she slept with him, because it would only then mean that she was not meant for Silviu, and thus easier to kill and be rid of. His blood brothers aren't too happy with her because of the seemingly convenient timing of her appearance ("she could be a witch!") and the Duke's almost death, but things backfire when Ilie falls for her. o.o And the worse part? He knows she'll never be his.

Lots of hilarious stuff happens, but the sex scenes! :3

Their time spent together, slowly getting used to the other, was so entertaining. And I loved that George was so... well, very rough around the edges in comparison to some other ladies I could name. XD! LOL And Silviu- whew. That is one seriously fine ass half-incubus/angel. Like, seriously... seriously...

Sex was supposed to be the thing that fully bound them together, but there was another thing they had to do if Silviu wanted her to gain immortality; he had to get her guardian's blessing. Oooo, that's another thing! :D They go undercover while heading over to her estate, and stop at a tavern. There, she has to pretend to be Ilie's human pet, and meets a lot of different creatures that totally made me smile. And hey, Silviu's a big strong, powerful duke- it shouldn't be too hard to convince her psycho aunt, right? WRONG. Because her aunt is not a normal gold digger. Oh, no. She's Delphine LaLaurie, aka the Red Witch.

UGH! So Silviu found out who her aunt was, but because she has a tendency to open her mouth, he didn't tell George, and instead had her tell her aunt that she had fallen for a marquis, and had come back home. When she asks him if his plan was to do her for the weekend and then dump her, and he doesn't say anything, she leaves him, hurt and ashamed. Weeks pass, and it takes a toll on her, despite her stubbornness to show any weakness.

A new plan is formulated, one that involves Ilie (poor thing) inviting and 'inviting' Lady Beryl and her daughters to the Duke's Ball, a welcome home party and a get-together to help the Duke choose his bride. George has no idea about the ball, only that it's a party, and after Ilie convinces her aunt that she is his human pet, she ends up with Silviu again in Brimstone.

They're together again, Silviu plans to kill her evil aunt (which means he won't need her guardian's blessing) -  it should be all good! But Lady Beryl doesn't completely trust the marquis, Ilie, and so she has a chameleon disguise himself as Ilie to take some of George's hair. Then "George" goes to Silviu and tells him that she kissed Ilie, and liked it. A lot. It's hurting Silviu, so he lashes out by dancing with the other women at the ball and ignoring George. It's when he kisses one of them (tongue included) that she makes him meet with her in the library. And then he tells her he doesn't love her. She'll be easy to replace.

"Just get out of my face tonight, milady. I never want to see your face again."

She's been such a tough chic all this time, but just when she started to lower her defenses because of him, he cuts her deep. And she gets taken- again -because of it.

Silviu and the Galere have a huge fight when the false lie is confronted, but they get to the library too late. They go after her and rescue her, but when George wakes up, she doesn't want to fight with him. It's just... Too. Much. :( After they deal with the chameleon, he apologizes to her in a very humbled position and she forgives him. :) It ends with them having breakfast with everyone two weeks later, talking about the laws she wants to change, and she and Silviu having 'breakfast' back in their room. ^.^

It was a sweet ending with an extremely sad/stressful few pages of heartbreak between Silviu and George at the ball. Loooved it! But WAIT! We got a sneak peak for Book 2, and OH MY GODDDDD. It shows four of the guardians George mentioned back in the states, her 'family': Rage, Knife, Storm and Dark. They're old, seemingly grumpy, but when they arrive in Chalys because of an invitation, something changes. The farther they venture into familiar lands, the younger they become, and then they're four strong, handsome and severely dangerous men. Apparently ready for 'revenge' and to protect their 'princess'. X))))) And then when they ask about the Duke and his engagement, their driver tells them that it was called off, and that the girl, Georgina, 'ran away or something'. AAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHH! The sky turns dark and stormy and they leave the scared driver before disappearing into the Woods of the Wraiths.

"That's dangerous territory!"
"We are home now."

excited GIF photo: Tamaki Excited gif ab3899ce.gif

I NEEDDDD to know what's going to happen! Her four "guardians" are supernatural and are sworn to protect their PRINCESS! George is a princess! And one of them wants revenge for the nymphs that were killed, but Silviu's mother became a heartkeeper because she was blackmailed to protect the nymphs. So what does that mean??? Am I reading too much into this??? o.O?!

I recommend this soooo muuuch. It's one of Marian Tee's shorter novels, but it's a great, entertaining and sizzling hot story. X))) I so cannot wait for the rest of the books. XD

PS- the whole time Lady Beryl was mentioned, I kept think of the bad guy from Sailor Moon.

No? Not the same for you? Maybe it's just me, then... lol and on that note-

Happy Reading!

Wow! I'm struggling what to say about this book.

First of all, I love the world-building! The whole concept of the half demon-half angel Silviu ruling over this magical medieval-like kingdom in the modern time, as well as a whole menagerie of fantastical creatures, was really interesting. I also loved the cast of characters in this book. I feel like it's an excellent set-up for a whole series revolving around this paranormal world.

I also love Georgina, or George for short. She is such a colorful character. She has an irrational streak and has no compunction jumping into dangerous situations without thinking about her own well being. On the other hand, she is impetuous, spunky, and hilarious in her naivete. I LOL'd so hard when Silviu told her that she is her heart keeper, and she misunderstood thinking he wants her to be her housekeeper.

My gripe is on the romance, particularly the beginning of it. I almost felt uncomfortable reading about George and Silviu's initial encounter. It almost felt like Silviu was manipulating George's reaction towards him and she was completely helpless about it. I wish there was a more gradual development in their relationship so it didn't feel too forced. This book felt too short and there was definitely a lot of room for plot development.

There are still a lot of promise to this story and would definitely look out for the sequel to find out what happens next.

If you have ever read a Marian Tee book then you know to expect a book with smoking hot scenes, scenes that will make you laugh and scenes that will make you cry, this book is no exception.

I may be a bit biased here being a HUGE fan of this author but I absolutely adore all of her novels. This is an entirely new word from other books that she has written and to explain it is complicated. Easiest way I can describe it is that there are cars but they wear an older style dress, still use horse drawn carriages as a mode of transport and there are witches, demons etc.

Georgina or George as she prefers to be know lives with her step-aunt who is intent on getting her hands on George's inheritance. One night she goes off to photograph the Wood of the Wraiths where she meets, and is kidnapped by, Silviu, a half demon/half angel Duke.

Silviu has been searching for his heartkeeper with no luck for years. On returning to his land and people he stumbles across George taking forbidden photographs in his forest. However as he approaches her he realises that this is who is has been searching for. George has a few quirks that has Silviu nicknaming her 'Little Miss Potty Mouth'!!

Needless to say the path of true love doesn't run smoothly with revelations about her aunt causing problems and one of Silviu's friends/followers also falling for her. However all too soon the story ends. Yes it does have an ending but it leaves a lot that can happen for book 2 that has been pencilled in for a possible January release.

One thing I will say is to make sue you have a fan to hand because some of the scenes in this book are seriously hot, and I mean seriously hot!!

Overall a great read but I can't help thinking that more time spent on the beginning would have embedded the story more. Made it less confusing considering the references to Earth and planes etc. I was a little lost about their history and the first stages of world building and it prevented me from buying in totally.

Will continue with the series though.

Where do I begin? A HFN kind of book. Hmm. Been a fan of this writer since I've read her How Not To Be Seduced By Billionaires Tri. So I checked her other works, my plan was to read Nick and Lilac after that trilogy but I was sidetracked when I read the blurb of this one. It was read at first sight. Cliche I know but that was really it. I am a true-blue paranormal junkie so when I read the synopsis of TDDAI I knew I'm going to like it. And I certainly am not wrong. It wasn't just like but it was L O V E at its finest. Lol.

The story concept is unique on its own. I like it. I know the heartkeeper thingie is another term for mates and such but MT did her own version and modifications of the usual mate business. So refreshing. She's certainly one of a kind. <3

The characters, here comes the unusual name of the hero like *insert Constantijin Karstein's name* in HNTBSBB trilogy. In here, it is Sylviu Draghici. Imagine how complicated his name is? Can I just call this half-demon, half-angel Syl for short? HAHA. Really, although his name is somewhat okay compared to the names of his Galere. It was mind-boggling. Plus, I was having a hard time, on the first chap upon identifying George as the heroine and was actually a girl. Glad that it was explained that her real name is Georgina. Relieved that Sylviu is calling her Georgina, it would have been awkward to say, 'I love you so much, George.' But anyway, I still like him and his never-ending passion. Lol. It was just sad that he wasn't able to use his incubus-like powers to seduce Georgina since she was a goner for him from the beginning. But I was wondering if him being an incubus is tantamount to being a demon? Because he's half-demon, half-angel so the demon part of him is the incubus, right? *pretend the answer is yes* Okay glad it was cleared. <3 Drooling over him? Not so much but he made me blush over and over again with his talents.

“The whole world would have paid if you were gone from my side. So for the sake of all those you hold dear, milady, try not to die on me.” - Sylviu

And oh, I like the heroine too. Minus her too much swearing, she's pretty likeable.

So back the the story. I love it. Altho I just find it hanging at the end in a lil way. It was said that Sylviu and Georgina cannot be truly mated without the guardian's blessing. So where does it leave them when the Red Witch aka the guardian was nowhere to be found? I've read at the last part, a prologue to book 2, does it mean it's a sequel and their love story and complicated ride to HEA will continue? Will surely look forward to it. And hope the rest of the Galere esp. Ilie will find their own heartkeeper. He reminds me so much of Illium and Sylviu as Raphael in Guild Hunter series. <3

All in all, it was such an enjoyable read. Recommended esp. for those paranormal lovers like me.

Another winner! The only problem I had with this book is that it was too short. Ms. Tee's story really pulls you in and hooks you in the beginning and kept on to the end. This book was a refreshing new take on a paranormal romance. I like that her books aren't the same old story. I haven't read anything from this author that I didn't like. Definitely a must read. I am ready for book two!

It was kind of all over the place from the beginning. A little bit of (highly inaccurate) histrom, some overly confusing paranormal elements, some horror thrown in at the end, and a very, simple and juvenile conflict between the mains at the end. It’s has potential if the author actually cared but it seems they didn’t bc it’s ends with a bit of a cliffhanger but nothing is available after that.

Oh and the h is insufferable the whole time which little to no character growth. It gets and extra star for the smut though.

I received this ARC in exchange for an honest review.

***SPOILER ALERT***

I just spent most of the afternoon so engrossed in this book that I completely lost track of time and forgot to feed my dog. He is not happy with me. o.O

This is my third read from Marian Tee and my favorite ... so far. While I enjoyed "The Greek Billionaire and His Secretary' and "Dear Greek Billionaire," I Loved "The Demon Duke and I." It was such a fun read and has so much color and detail. The characters are interesting and well developed and the story line was just great. I didn't have to work to like the characters, I fell for Silviu, The Demon Duke from the moment I met him and George, brave, wonderful, George is just hilarious! She's a girl after my own heart and we share much of the same vocabulary.

SIlvui is a half-demon Duke who is destined to die and be taken to hell since he hasn't found his heartkeeper. He has been looking for her for a long time and has resigned himself to the fact that he will not be able to find her in time to save his life.

George is a human female living in Chalys. She was sent to live with her step aunt after the death of her mother and disappearance f her father. Her aunt, not the warmest of people, is trying to marry her off to a malleable young man so she can get control of George's inheritance. But George is spunky and thwarts her aunt's plans at eery turn.

George and Silviu meet in the Woods of Wraiths while she was running away from her step-aunt "Lady Byotch" and he was running from certain death and a trip to hell. Sillviu knew from the first moment that he saw George that she was his heartkeeper, but needed her to agree to it. While she was dazed and confused by the Woods of Wraith, he gets her to agree to become his heartkeeper. That triggers an immediate change and his body weakness in pain as half of George's soul transferred itself to his body. This change trigger all sorts of consequences, since Hell is not happy to lose Silviu.

Silviu, George and his Galeré have to fight against demons trying to kill he and George, but also against her evil step-aunt who turns out to be worse that the Wicked Witch of the West. All while dealing with the challenges of a budding relationship, and Silviu's jealousy that one of his friends may be in love with his heartkeeper too.

As soon as I was done reading the book and the preview, I went looking for the second book to buy it. Sadly, it has not yet been published. I am now going to beg and plead with Ms. Tee to please, please, please, complete the second book. I need to know what happens to George and Silviu!! Are they really over and whyyyy? And is she really a princess? Of where? and who the heck are the four brothers that kept her safe? So much good stuff!! I can't wait until the next book in this series.

The Demon Duke and I is the first paranormal romance that I’ve read from Marian Tee and I have to say that she does not disappoint. You can tell that she put a lot of thought into this. The story takes place in a world separate from our own that you can get to, though not easily. Marian didn’t just put demons and such into a story, she made them their own world; complete with a hierarchy of rulers, society norms and their own set of rules to live by. There are class structures, legends and amazingly enough; demons other than the normal ones you always see like vampires. Plus this new world is set up like something from the 1800′s where there is no technology and frankly they like it that way.

So take a woman from our time, our world, and have her suddenly be a ward to her aunt in theirs and watch the hilarity ensue. Georgina (George for short) has a potty mouth from hell in a place where women never swore so can you say duck out of water? But somehow she makes it work. Though that could be part in fact that she ends up being the heartkeeper of one very sexy, very important Demon Silviu. Not only does she end up his heartkeeper, which everyone thought were just myths, but she saves his life, and proceeds to swear her way into his heart and the hearts of his closest friends as well. Her modern beliefs tend to clash with their outdated ones and she isn’t afraid to go toe to toe with a group of Demons that naturally instill fear in the hearts of everyone else. The plot thickens with an aunt who turns out to be an super-duper evil witch and Marian, yet again, teases you mercilessly with cliffhangers about George’s past. Which becomes painfully clear that she is not your normal everyday modern woman when you get a glimpse of the family members she left behind, when they come for her at the end of the story. Guess that means I’ll just have to reread this one to pass the time, and really that’s no hardship. Marian keeps things steamy between her lovers while making you laugh and thoroughly enjoy yourself. 4 Stars!

Another wonderful quirky book from Marian.I've read this book previously, and recently re-read it as part of a box-set.

This is another one that has annoyed me, because it just ends with a couple of bits of the story not being resolved. However it is part of a series, so I'll let it go for now, lol...

This is one of my favourite paranormal books by Marian Tee. I love all the characters in this book, aside from the Aunt and cousins obviously.

The story is beautifully woven and the imagery excellent. It makes you want to go on holiday there yourself. I especially love the snarkiness of the heroine, who takes no prisoners.

Lots of demons, especially one super-hot demon, vampires, shifters etc, snarky heroine, this book has got it all, so ya just gotta love it.

Really wanted to have a quick simple pleasurable read and this was perfect. Because it was so short the story line was really rushed. I wished that there was a slower developing romance instead of lust before love kind of thing, but I guess that's what I should expect from an erotica. WHEN IS THE SECOND BOOK COMEING OUT THOUGH. At first I was thinking ehhh it kind of has some loose ties, but I can end here and be satisfied, but then there was a preview to the next one, read it, and though WHATTTTT NEED TO READ THE SECOND BOOK NOW. So I'm hoping that will come sometime soon, but I don't even see a book on goodreads for it so crossing my fingers >.<

I JUST DIED LAUGHING! I give it 4 star for humor!

It was epicly funny that I actually had to hold myself or else my ribs would crack!

I love how George takes on anything that is thrown her way and how steely her determination is. She is so perfect for the hotter-than-the-surface-of-the-sun Silviu. The two interacts in a really swoon worthy way that leads you sighing.

The only qualms I have is the mother of all cliffhanger ending! WHY WOULD YOU DO THIS TO ME!!!!! I think I'm gonna need to learn yoga or other relaxation crap to calm my sanity while I wait for the other installment.

I really enjoy reading Marian Tee stories. It was a nice change of pace diverging from the usual corporate-billionaire-playboy contemporaries I already love. This new world she created, filled with all sorts of supernatural beings was very entertaining. The story itself was filled with her typical-albeit paranormal-alpha male, and a great, sassy heroine. Throw in incredible heat, an amazing cast of secondary characters, great action, (and did I mention incredible heat?) and you have a very entertaining story. I can't wait for the sequel!
